that, for better or worse, the carrying into effect of the Bank merger is assured.Provision ia made for the adjourn ment of the meeting of shareholders should the required number of proxies not have been received on the 14th.The' meeting may, therefore, be adjourned from time to time until the required support is received to confirm the sale. The local directors state that proxies are coming in satisfactorily. The requirement that they be made out in a regular way and certified to makes it necessary to return many of them for correction in this regard.THINKS SHERBROOKE AND TOWNSHIPS WILL LOSE PRESTIGE.The sale.of the Eastern Townships Bank to the Canadian Bank of Commerce continues to engage public at tention. The St.Johns News, in last, week’s edition, says editorially : “Our Sherbrooke correspondent in his excellent letter t.o-day comments on the fact that nothing in the past has ever advertised Sherbrooke to the same extent as the Eastern Townships Bank, and probably never will do in the future.Though the latter part of this statement does not admit of absolute proof so far as one is able to judge it may be accepted as substantially correct, and therefore the conclusion is almost inevitable that the absorption of the Eastern Townships Bank will prove a serious loss to the prestige of the chief town in this progressive section of the.province, even to the extent of many persons expressing the conviction that the loss would indirectly counterbalance the direct advantage of the amalgamation. We know for a certainty that in many quarters it has caused deep regret, especially as the stockholders were not afforded an opportunity of expressing an opinion in the question before the deed was done.Has the metropolis of the Townships taken a retrogressive step be able to support herself. Her desire to have this done was particularly promoted by the fact that there is more than $2,000,000 due her immediately , she said, as the result of a recent sale of a portion of the Pinckney estate, the value of which is estimated at between $30,000,000 and $40,000,000.POSTAGE STAMPS IN FRENCH Ottawa Jan 8.—It is understood that the Post Office Department is
