per cent, per annum from the date of payment until the Company has commenced to operate the said extension.The money will he paid to the Company as follows : Fifty thousand dollars on the completion of new buildings, and the other fifty thousand dollars when said buildings are equipped with machinery and tools ready for operation.The City will also furnish the power required for the new extension at $15 per h.p.The extension will he exempted from taxation for ten years.In return, the Company will pay hack the entire amount of $100,000 in ten equal yearly consecutive payments of ten thousand dollars, the first payment to he made one year from the date of the payment of the last fifty thousand dollars.They will build two new buildings, the cost of which, with equipment, will be between $75,000 and $100,000.They also agree to employ at least 250 $22,000.This, together with tax ex emption and cheap power, constitutes the bonus.CANADIAN BRAKESHOE COMPANY.Under this by-law the City grants the Company exemption from taxation for a period of x\"Bn years.They also convey to the Company a site at the coiner of Drummond Road and Belvidere street, on certain conditions.The Canadian Brakeshoe Company binds itself to erect a building at a cost of from $40,000 to $50,000 and employ each year during the first two years, continuously, from 100 to 125 men in Sherbrooke, with a yearly increase of 25 more men.They also agree to pay $1,000 per week in wages.When they have complied with the above they will be entitled to a free and clear deed of the land, and if, after five years, the annual wages amount to $100,000, the Company nhall be entitled to a free and clear deed.After reading these by-laws, the Council decided to Postpone the third reading until the next regular industry of the country, were revealed yesterday in the trial of the ten Chicago packers before United States District Judge George A.Carpenter.The contract, which was dated May 31st, 1902, was read to the jury and offered in evidence by counsel for the Government.The promoters planned to borrow $90,000,000 to finance the corporation.The appraised valuation of Armour, Swift, Morris and their subsidiary companies was given at $180,000,000.Each of the three promoters deposited $1,000,000 with a Chicago hank as an evidence of good faith, but they were compelled to drop the plan because of Russian troops by the Persian au thorities.The consul-general says: \u201cI protest against this infamous calumny on our troops, who have always treated the peaceable populace with humanity notwithstanding the atrocities wreak ed by the Persians on our wounded soldiers and the mutilation of our killed.\u201cIf isolated innocent persons have suffered it can only have been during the
