[" Sherbrooke Daily Record.Established 1897 SHERBROOKE, QUE., FRIDAY, DECEMBER L>2, 1911.ONE CENT FURTHER INFORMATION RE • BIO BANK MERCER, Mr.Kackinnon Makes Statement—How Eastern Townships Situation Will be Affected—Present Local Organization Will be Maintained—A Letter to Shareholders. The proposed amalgamation of the Eastern Townships Bank and Canadian Bank of Commerce, as announced in yesterday's Kccord, has caused a sensation in financial circles throughout the Eastern Townships, at, well as throughout the entire banking world.A deal in which two banks of such prominence are concerned could not but occupy the attention of other large financial institutions and of the public In general. The question of paramount importance among business men throughout the Eastern Townships is : “What effect will this have on the Eastern Townships Bank ?” When seen at his office this morning, Mr.James Mackinnon, general manager of the E.T.Bank, stated that as far as the Eastern Townships were concerned, no material changes would take place. The present stafi would be retained and the entire business of the Townships conducted from the present Sherbrooke office. He himself would occupy the Position of manager in chief of this section. It was also understood in the agreement that the present policy of the Bank would be continued and that it would not be necessary to refer to the Toronto or head office for the ratification of every transaction. As far as the Townships were concerned, the business would be bandied from the present Sherbrooke office, and the present board of directors would act as an advisory board.WILL HAVE REPRESENTATIVES ON NEW DIRECTORATE.When asked if any of the present-directors of the E.T.Bank would be appointed to the new directorate of the amalgamated banks, Mr.Mackinnon stated that three, at least, would he members of the new hoard of directors.BRANCHES OP E.T.BANK.The branches of the E.T.Bank throughout the Eastern Townships will be operated under the name of ‘ The Canadian Bank of Commerce, with which is united the Eastern Townships Bank.’’ St.James St.Branch, Montreal, and the Montreal office of- the Canadian Bank of Commerce will be united, being at present only a short distance apart.The.East and West End Branches will remain whete they are, but will With this backing they will be in a better position to assist new industries, etc., and in this connection will pursue their present policy. The union will result in the creation of a bank with a paid up capital of $15,000,000 and a reserve of over $12,500,000.The aggregate assets will exceed $210,000,000, while the terr tory of the united banks will cover every portion of the Dominion, including the Yukon. The number of branches will be over 330, with representation in London, England; New York, San Francisco, and Mexico City.It will be at once seen that this union has the merit of preventing duplication of branches, inasmuch as the Eastern Townships Bank is strongly entrenched in this Province, whereas the Bank of Commerce thoroughly covers the Province of Ontario, the Maritime Provinces, the Northwest Provinces, British Columbia, and the Yukon.SHAREHOLDERS WILL MEET ON FEBRUARY 14TH.The shareholders of the E.T.Bank will meet on February 14th to pass on the agreement. The following letter, which explains the agreement, will be mailed to eacn shareholder : “For some time it has been apparent to your directors that if the expansion of the Eastern Townships Bank were to keep pace with the increased development of Canada, a material enlargement of capital would be necessary, together with a marked addition to the present staff. These needs became even more apparent on the occasion of the visit which was made to the Western Provinces by a committee of your directors in October last. There we saw’ that while the growth of the country demands fresh banking facilities, the cost of establishing branches would render it impossible for our Bank with its present capital to take any prominent part in the development of the West.“Since our return a suggestion has been made to us for an amalgamation with the Canadian Bank of Commerce, whereby each shareholder ot the Eastern Townships Bank is offered two shares of stock in that bank for each share held by him or her, their shares being $50, whereas the par value of ours is $100.This ACI WAS WILM ON NWS PANT.London, Ont., Jury Bring in Verdict After Lengthy Session.VICTIM DIED FROM A WOUND INFLICTED ON LEG WITH AN AXE.London, Ont., YEARS.For the past five years tne Canadian Bank of Commerce has been negotiating with the E.T.Bank for an amalgamation. Some time ago it was brought up, and the Eastern Townships directors turned it down. When the present offer was made, the directors felt bound to refer it to their shareholders.BANK OF COMMERCE DID NOT GET CONTROL.Mr.Mackinnob denied that the Canadian Bank of Commerce had secured .control of the E.T.Bank’s stock. So far as he knew, the Bank of Commerce or their friends did not own a share of E.T.Bank stock. They were not forced into the amalgamation, but did so because they NATTEB Mr.A.Gerin Has Been Proposed to Fill the Mayor’s Chair, SEVERAL NAMES MENTIONED FOR ALDERMEN, AND IT IS EXPECTED THERE WILL BE ONE OR MORE CONTESTS.Coaticook, Dec.22.—(Special)—A1 though polling day is many weeks off, still the lines arc already pretty well drawn for a municipal contest at the beginning of next year.Under the charter there will be general qlec tions.A full board of seven aider-men and a mayor will be elected. It is the turn of a French-Canailian to hold the office of mayor. At a meeting held in the East Ward of th;; town recently the matter of mayor was discussed, and the name of Mr.A.Gerin was proposed for the office.A largely signed requisition has been, or will be, presented to him, asking him to accept the office- Considering that this was a meeting of French electors, and that no other name was proposed, it is not likely that there will be a contest for the mayoralty.Should, however, anyone come forward in opposition to Mr.Gerin, it is understood that he has signified his willingness to stand a contest if necessary. In the East Ward the retiring aldermen are J.B.Gendreau and A.L.Dupuis.Neither of these gentle men is seeking re-election.At the meeting just referred to Messrs.N.L.Vincent and E.P.Dupuis were nominated for aldermen for the ward, and the gentlemen proposed accepted the nomination. While it is, of course, not certain, it is quite probable that they will be elected by acclamation. In the South Ward there is likely to be a contest.Alderman McCurdy has issued a circular letter to the electors of the ward stating that he should be a candidate at the next election.A circular letter to the same electors has also been issued by Mr.E.C.Baldwin, who states that he, too, will be a candidate.Unless one of these gentlemen ret.lroB, which does not seem likely, there is sure to be a contest. It is not known posi tively whether Alderman ‘Kennedy will stand again or not.If he does not, Mr.A.A.Hall has stated that he would be a candidate for tbe position, although he would not come ior-ward in opposition to Mr.Kennedy.It is also talked on the street that Mr.E.B.Fischer will be in the field, running as it were on the same ticket as Dr.McCurdy.In fact, it is pretty well understood that Mr.Fischer in response to a considerable number of electors has signified bis willingness to come into tbe field. In the Centre Ward tbe present al dermen are "Messrs.G.W.Paige and Charles Akhurst. It is pretty well understood that Mr.Paige will be in the field on election day, even If it means a contest.Whether Alderman Akhurst will stand a contest is not known. In fact, just at the moment there does not appear to lie.much opposition to his going back by acclamation. In the North Ward Alderman Martin is again the choice of the electors.A meeting was held a few days ago and his name was the only one proposed for the position.Just what the situation will be on nomination day cannot now be said, but it is pretty safe to say that there will Ije one or two contests.when the men got into an argument, over artistic fitness of certain ornaments.According to police Cosgrove,
