[" Sherbrooke Daily Record.Established 1897 SHEBBKOOKE, QUE., WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 1911.ONE CENT HATIONS FOR OF Q.C.R.New York, New Haven and Hartford, and Canadian Pacific Ry.After Local Line—Announcement May Be Made Soon It ia understood tfrat negotiations have been going on for some time with reference to the alteration of the control of the Quebec Central Railroad. This change, however, will in no way affect the identity of the present company. The companies into whose hands the control of the Quebec Central will go are said to be the Canadian Pacific Railway and the New York, New Haven and New Hartford. An inquiry was made at the head office of the Quebec Central, this morning and the Record was informed that the matter had not been settled but that an announcement would shortly be made in this connection. The officials would not commit themselves as to the companies into whose hands the control would go.257 MILES OP LINE.The Quebec Central Railway consists in all of :257 miles of line, the main line running from Sherbrooke to Levis with branches from Tring Jet.to Megantic and from Valley Jet., to St.Sabine.Close relations have always existed between the Quebec Central and the B.& M., the New York, New Haven & Hartford companies. This has enabled it to operate an unexcelled service between Quebec and New York, and all New England points. The road in recent years, under able management, is understood to have been very profitable.Passenger and freight traffic is heavy.Indeed, the Quebec Central runs through what is regarded what is perhaps the wealth-est part of the province, certainly so from a railway point of view.Aside from the agricultural districts there are the vast mining and lumber interests.Should the rumored change take place it is not likely that it would materially affect local conditions relative to the Quebec Central.- «¦ -.-.— -.-.— CHiCH SI OH FIS OT Splendid Edifice of St.Jean Baptiste in Montreal Destroyed.LOSS IS PLACED AT 3200,000 AND IS WELL COVERED BY INSURANCE.Montreal, June 28.—Lightning last night struck the Church of St.Jean Baptiste 0n Rachel Street and destroyed the splendid edifice, with a loss of about 3200,000.This was the second time that the church was destroyed by fire, but the present fire was much the more disastrous, since after the fire in 1008 it had been rebuilt into one of the finest edifices in Montreal.By midnight there was little left but the walls apd tower facing on Rachel Street, which still stood, although it was momentarily threatening to fall. There was fortunately no loss of life in connection With the fire, which, started about half past nine, shortly after a servise had been •held. The only injury to any person occurred tr, Fireman Burgouin, who was thrown from a ladder by a toppling wait and suffered a broken leg.Early this morning the fire was still ranging within the almost, bare walls of the church, and it was stated by Chief Tremblay that it would pi obably he noon to-day before the fiiemen would be able to leave the ruins. While the losses are heavy they art well covered by insurance, it being stated that there was $175,000 insurance nn the main building, spread over a number of companies, while the insurance 0n the organ amounted to 314,000.The organ insurance had only been conciuded at noon yesterday, the instrument having been only recently installed by the Cassavant Company, of St.Hyacinthe, while it was formally opened last Werines-day- BEACHY FLEW OVER NIAGARA FALLS.Circled Cataract and Then Dipped Under Steel Bridge.AS Hfl PASSED HORSE SHOE FALLS HE FELT A DOWNWARD SUCTION.Niagara Falls, Ont., June 28.—For the first time in the history of aeronautics, an aeroplane circled over the cataract of Niagara and dipped gracefully under the upped steel arch bridge last evening, when Lincoln Beachey piloted his Curtis bi-plane safely over the perilous course before fully a quarter of a million people. His successful flight marks another milestone in the achievements of daring bird men.Beachey won the thousand 'dollar prize offered by the International Carnival Committee for the under-thc-bridge flight.Beachey rose in the air in his machine about a mile from, the roaring .cataract, soared several thousand feet into the clouds, then slung near to the earth.Several times he was lost to view.like a great seagull the acrot'fane passed over the steel structure, clearing the trolley tbat*crosscs it by a meagre twenty feet.Down the Gorge the machine raced for a mile, then passed over the ci,ty on the Canadian side.Circling over the Horseshoe Falls for the second time, Beachey dipped his machine as soon as he cleared the cataract and ducked under the bridge without even brushing a guy wire.McCurdy, the Canadian aviator, and other well-known bird men, had refused to try the flight, declaring it to he suicide.Beachey will fly over the falls again this afternoon. He states that ! he would not try to fly under the i bridge again for five thousand dol-j lars.As he passed over the Horse-j shoe Falls he felt a strong suction downward.L ALSO BUY NO.HATLEY PLANT.Sherbrooke Company Making Fur-ther Electric Acquisitions.WILL LIGHT TOWNS AND VILLAGES FROM SHERBROOKE TO DERBY CENTER, VT — ALSO, SALE FOR POWER.Considerable interest is manifested both in Sherbrooke and in the Mas-sawippi Valley, relative to the purchase by the Sherbrooke Power and Light Company of the property of the Stanstead Electric Company. It is further learned that negotiations are almost completed [or the purchase of the North Hatley Light and Power Company which’will give additional power and enable the Sherbrooke Company to light North Hatley, Compton, Waterville, Hunt-ingville, Lennoxville, Oapeltqn and Eustis. The acquisition at Stanstead means that the Sherbrooke Company will supply electric light to Stanstead, Rock Island, Derby Line, Beebe Plain, Stanstead Junction and Derby Centro In addition to the sale of electric light they will also find a market for about 1,000 b.p.amongst the manufacturing industries of these flourishing towns and villages.Further extensions are also said to be in contemplation. The acquisition, however of both these concerns will place the.Company in the strong position of practically controlling the electric light and electric power situation in this section of the Eastern Townships.Mr.C.J.McCuafg and Mr.Frank Thompson of Montreal, Directors of the Sherbrooke Railway and Power Company were in town during the last few days inspecting the system and the railway construction, which is progressing rapidly.Messrs.H.E.Channel!, Sherbrooke* Porter H.Dale and Mr.Sweeney, of Island Pond, represented the Stanstead Company in the transfer of its property.E.T.A.A.PRIZE LISTS BIG MAILED.Exhibition Office Is Scene of Great Activity, LARGE SIGN BOARDS ARE BEING PREPARED FOR SHIPMENT THROUGHOUT CANADA, The NO DATE WAS FIXED.Washington, June 28.—An attempt was made, by Chairman Penrose, of the Senate Finance Committee, to fix July 24 for a.vote on the Oana-dian reciprocity bill, was defeated in the Senate yesterday, through Senator La Follette’s objection. The debate indicated that a portion of the Republican insurgents and some Democrats will tight to have the wool revision and the free list hills passed first, so that the President will have to act on them before the Senate passes the reciprocity bill.TRAIN WENT DOWN BANK.Paris, Ont., June 28.—The 4.10 p.m.accommodation train on the Grand Trunk Railway was wrecked two miles east of Paris, Monday afternoon. The two coaches, engine and tender left the tracks on a 40 foot embankment. The engine and tender went, almost to the bottom, but the coaches stayed on the edge of the embankment.Fireman Pur-sell, of Stewart street, Hamilton, was badly cut about the chest and head, and his back and limbs were fearfully scalded. His case is critical. The passengers were not hurt. The engineer had a slight cut on the hand.DOCK WORKERS STRIKE.London, June 28.—The strike of the dockers and transport workers at various points continues, and ship ping is seriously affected. At Man Chester a large number of dockers struck yesterday morning. At Tilbury f.he quartermasters of three Peninsular and Oriental liners refused to sign unless they received an advance in wages, which the Shipping Federation declares cannot be granted owing to the present poor condition in the freight traffic. This movement of the quartermasters, which is something now, is likely to spread Nine big colliers are held up at Sunder land.Almost every steamship which signed Its crew at London only did so after conceding the wages demanded by the unions.CHURCH UNION HERE.Montreal, June 28,—Farther evidence of the spirit of union between Presbyterians and Methodists was given yesterday at the gathering of the Montreal Presbytery, when a report was presented by Rev.Principal Scrimgcr, from the union committee appointed to arrange services at Ste.Anne’s.The recommendation of the committee was that united services should be held, and that some of these should be conducted with Macdonald College, and others elsewhere. These services will he worked by ministers of both churches in turn.» ^ ^ ^ w.WILL FORM NEW CABINET.Paris, June 28.—Joseph Cailiaux, yesterday formally accepted President Fallieres* invitation to organize a ministry to succeed that of M.Monis, which resigned after being in power not quite four months. The now cabinet probably will be made up in part as follows:—M.Cailiaux, premier and minister of the interior; Jean Cruppi justice; Justin G.Deselves, foreign affairs; Eugene Etienne or Adolpc Mcssimy, war;* Théophile Delchasee, marine; Jules Steeg, public Instruction; L.L.Klotz, finance.Cailiaux offered Poincare his choice of the portfolios of foreign affairs or war, but he preferred the ministry of justice. As this did not harmonize with Cailla,ux’s Ideas of a combina-1 tlon from a political standpoint, Poincare will not enter the new govern ment.of strike movement.Dock men are fighting simply for recognition of their union and employees of non-upionist crews of steamers Haver-ford of Red Star Line god other liners i at the docks here, have deserted their vessels in sympathy with wharf employees.STORM STOPPED DEBATE.Washington, D.O., June 28.—(Special)—A violent electric storm stopped the debate on reciprocity in the U.S.Senate presided over by Mr.Justice Globensky. The cases took up the whole day.Several cases went over till next term.CLAIM FOR A WAGON.Mullins vs.Thibeault, and Biron, opposant. This matter came before the Court upon the merits of an opposition claiming a wagon which had been seized as belonging to the Defendant. The wagon had been sold under a conditional note and the note had been transferred to third parties. The Plaintiff claimed that the ownership of the wagon did not go with the transfer of the note After hearing the proof and argument the opposition was maintained with costs.ACTION AGAINST CORPORATION.Mayhew vs.the Village of Dixville. This was an action for $20 damages which the Plaintiff claimed to have suffered fast October !>y his horse running away and smashing his wagon owing to the bad condition of the road in the village. The proof showed that the accident took place on what is known as the Parker Hill, a very steep hill in, the municipality, and at a point on i1 to hill where what is known as a •¦ ater bar had been placed by the municipality to turn the water into the ditch. The Corporation pleaded that a water bar was justifiable and necessary upon such a steep hill. The Court held that while a municipality might he justified in doing certain things to turn the water it was not justified in placing a bar across the road and doing damage as was proved in thin case.Judgment went for the amount sued for.BALANCE OF PROMI830RY NOTE.Bacon vs.Binette.Tins was an action for $37.75 of which $35 was for the balance of a promissory note given to the Plaintiff by one F.C.Dion and $2.75 for drawing wood for said Dion which the Plaintiff claimed that the Defendant Binette promised to pay.The promise to pay was proved, although ' o defendant denied the same. The proof showed that Dion had given Bfhgtte a note for $9(1, and that a cow had been turned out in part gayment to the extent of $55.The law does not allow proof concerning verbal contracts of over $50 and the question arose in the case whether the proof made was legal proof or not.In the end the Court came to the conclusion that Binette turned out one of his own cows in payment on account of the note and that his promise to pay the remainder was only part of his connection with the contract of $90, the amount of the note, and that verbal testimony was not therefore allowable to prove the promise to pay the remainder of the note sued for.The action was therefore dismissed.JUDGMENT AGAINST COATICOOK Comptois vs.Corporation of Coati-cook.This was an action for $99 damages because the Corporation removed a partition which the Plaintiff had erected at the end of the covered platform on the Coaticook market where be sold meat on Saturday, The Corporation admitted that consent had been given to erect a partition there, but in such a way as not to obstruct the view when it was not in use.Three witnesses swore that they heard the arrangement between the Chairman of the Market Committee and the Defendant and that the partition was erected, according to agreement.Three other witnesses swore that they too were present and that the partition erected was in no way in accordance with the permission granted. The Court held that the proof In the pleadings was upon th e corporat on to show justification for removing the partition, which owing to the witnesses, being three ‘to three had not been done.It therefore held the Corporation liable to damages and gave judgment for $28.00.ACTION TO REVENDICATE HORSE.Dupuis vs.Bolduc.This was an action to revendicate a horse of the value of $65.The horse had been sold by the Plaintiff some two years ago under a conditional note to one Lamoureux who bad sold it to the present Defendant in whose hands it was seized. The Defendant pleaded j that he was the owner because he had bought it from a man who was a horse trader, and that the Plaintiff had also acquiesced in the sale to him.The Court held that the con-1 ditional note was good, and that the ! Defendant had failed to make proof I of his pretensions, and therefore or-derod him to return the horse to the I Plaintiff within ten days and pay the costs of the action, or in default to t pay Plaintiff $65 as the value of the horse.TAKE WEYMOUTH TO Bl Will Clear Men Held on Charge Of Killing Him.LAWYER HAPPY OVER CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE WHICH HE PICKED UP IN SHERBROOKE.Probation Officer Daniel S.Hamilton and Lawyer E.L.Emery left on the midnight train last night for Bid-deford, Me., taking with them Charles G.Weymouth.Perhaps the happiest one of the three was Lawyer Emery. As stated in yesterday’s Record Mr.Emery is the attorney for Messrs.Buzzell and Merrill, the men who are now in jail awaiting trial for the murder of Weymouth."The expression on the face of the State Attorney will be worth seeing when T produce Weymouth,’’ he stated to the Record representative yesterday afternoon. He also added that in undertaking the defense of the two men he had taken a difficult case. The two children swore positively that they had seen Merrill and Buzzell murder Weymouth. The fact that he left Biddeford about that time strengthened the murder theory. In fact it would not have been surprising if these two men had been sentenced to life imprisonment or even sent to the electric chair for a crime they never committed.WEYMOUTH MAY RETURN TO SHERBROOKE.It is very likely that Weymouth will return to Sherbrooke. He has been employed here for five years and likes the city. There is no charge against him, and as soon as he reaches Biddeford and is identified there will he no reason for keeping him there. From what could lie learned of Weymouth ho was of a very quiet disposition. While at Biddeford he had had some trouble with his family over property matters and had left home.Although he knew that he was supposed to be murdered it iii doubtful if he knew that two men were being held for doing the deed.He was quite willing to go with the officer to clear the men now being held.WORKED IN BUTCHER SHOP FOR LONG TIME.Before going to work for Bray Bros Weymouth had l*een employed J;y Mr.Lachance, a local butcher. He was a butcher by trade.MR.LEON TRUDEAU, the morning.During the night he became much worse and in the morning his condition was alarming. The notary was called and his will was made. The priest was called and the last rites of the Church administered. It was then thought best to remove him to the hospital in Sherbrooke for operation. He was taken there by the 8.30 train in the morning.Although put upon the operating table the surgeons realized that it was a hopeless case and the operation was not concluded. His body was brought back by the “Scoot” in the evening.A large number of friends were there to follow the hearse conveying the body to his late home.Mr.Trudeau was liked by everyone and justly so, because of his genial disposition. He was forty-two years of age and leaves to mourn .his loss a, widow and child and other relatives. In addition to the public positions referred to he was also assistant secretary treasurer of the Council a.nd the School Trustees, and has held prominent positions in the St.Jean
