[" 2 Sherbrooke Daily Record Established 1897 SHERBROOKE, QUE, TUESDAY, JUNE 6,\t1911.ONE CENT PAVING BY-LAWPASSED.Cost to be Borne by City, Proprietors anil St.Ry.MO ACTION TAKEN ON WATER BY-LAW.\u2014SCHOOL TAXES FIXED.Nothing of more than ordinary importance took place at last night\u2019s session of the City Council.In the absence of Mayor Cate, Pro-Mayor Aid.Ledoux presided.Every member was present with the exception of Aid.L.H.Olivier.THE PAVING OF WELLINGTON STREET.Aid.Howard read his by-law providing for the paving of Wellington street.This by law provided that the Sherbrooke Railway and Power Co.should pay the cost of paving between their rails and eighteen inches on either side.The cost of paving the rest would be paid by the city and proprietors.Aid.McManamy thought the City should send the City Engineer and two members of the Council to Boston to look into the different kinds of paving with a view of getting the best for Sherbrooke.Without further action along this line the by-law was declared read first, second and third time and passed.THE PROPOSED BY-LAW REGULATING CHARGES FOR SPRINKLER SYSTEMS AND PRIVATE HYDRANTS.The following letter was read from the Board of Trade with reference to the proposed by-law fixing the charges for water for sprinkler systems, stand pipes and private hydrants : June 5th, 1911.\u201cTo His Worship, The Mayor and Members of the City Council, Sherbrooke, Que.\u201cGentlemen:\u2014 In reference to the Municipal By-law providing for an additional charge for hydrant and sprinkler service, which we understand has been twice read before your honorable body, and is to come up tonight for the final reading, we would respectfully ask that you refrain from enacting this by-law as drafted, or, if it is necessary to make a charge, we would ask that it be a small or nominal one for the following reasons: \u201c1st.These hydrants and sprinklers are installed in order to assist the city in case of fire, and it does not seem fair to impose a special tax for this service.We believe the proposed by-law would tend to dis- I courage the installation of the sprink- j 1er system.\u201c2nd.It is not customary in Canada for such a large charge to be made for this service, in proof of which we attach hereto copies of telegrams received from the Civic office of the following named municipalities: Ottawa, Ont., Quebec, Que., Hamilton, Ont.,, Three Rivers, Que., Galt, fContinued on Page C.) H HIED.Clothing Was Set on Fire by Light ed Lamp.HER CONDITION IS SERIOUS BUT DOCTORS SAY SHE WILL RECOVER.Emberton, June 6.\u2014(Special)\u2014 A very sad, as well ao a serious accident happened at the home of Mr.Joseph Lanson, when one of his daughters, Annaciade Lanson was very badly burned about the neck, shoulders and arms.The accident happened late in the evening.On Sunday afternoon a number of young people, friends of the Lanson family, came up from La Patrie for a social time.A very pleasant evening was spent at the Lanson home by all who were present.While the party were getting ready to return to La Patrie, Miss Lanson, who had been up stairs, was coming down, when in some way she stumbled and fell down the stairs with a lighted lamp which she was carrying.The fire from the lamp immediately caught on the kerosene which had been spilled on her clothing in the fall.Her mother, Mrs.Joseph Lanson was the first to come to her assistance and others also helped to put out the flames which surrounded the girl\u2019s face.Before the fire could he extinguished, however, the unfortunate girl was very badly injured.Doctor Lucier from La Pat^ rie was immediately sent for, who on arriving, rendered the best medical aid that could be given.The injuries were of such a serious nature that Father Perin was also called for.This morning Miss Lanson is feeling as comfortable as could be expected and the doctor says that all danger is now over.GIFT OF 1100,000 Money Will be Used to Complete McGill Medical Building.DR.JAMES DOUGLAS ALSO GAVE DONATION OF 825,000 TO COLLEGE.Montreal, Juoe G.\u2014A scene of great entbusiasn marked the convocation and conferring 0f McGill degrees in medicine and agriculture at the Royal Victoria College yesterday afternoon, when Principal Peterson announced that Lord Strathcona had donated §100,000 to complete the ecuipinent of the new medical building.He read the following cablegram from His Lordship: \u201cWarmly congratulate University of yesterday\u2019s Record was the sole topic of conversation yesterday and is still the subject of considerable comment.When the first excitement began to cool down yesterday, an investigation as to who the culprit might he was proceeded with.From what was learned, none of the windows or the doors had been tampered with, and as there was just another inmate in the house at the time of the assault suspicion fell on her.After some discussion with the authorities it was deemed advisable to take Florence Carthright into custody.She was brought before Messrs.St.Laurent and E.B.Pope, J.P.\u2019s, and given a hearing on the charge of assaulting >fir.and Mrs.Brewer while asleep, and also with setting the bed on fire.She stoutly maintained her innocence, but was found guilty.Under the circumstances of the case, and the facts which had been laid before the Court, it was decided to suspend sentence for a year provided that she left the place in charge of her sister, who promised to look after her.Her sister came for her from Coaticook last evening.No reason can he assigned for such an act on the part of the girl in question.It is learned that she had a had temper.She is only 17 years of age, and had been with the family for two years.She came from a home in England.BARN BURNED AT BULWER.QUANTITY OF HAY AND FARM IMPLEMENTS WERE DESTROYED.Bulwer, June 6.\u2014 (Special)\u2014 Fire totally destroyed one of the barns together with three or four tons of hay, a pair of double harnesses a.nd some farming tools belonging to Mrs.Hubert Stevenson.The origin of the fire is unknown.Smoke was first noticed coming from the interior of the barn.The call for help was quickly responded to, for in a very short time about fifty people were present and worked untiringly to save the remaining small barn and house.The loss will be considerable as the insurance was only about $175.FELL DISK OF pn HIT.Mr.Chas.Caswell, Richmond, Sustained Serious Injury.WAS AT WORK ON NEW G.T.R.SHOPS AT TIME OF ACCIDENT.Fichmond, June 6.\u2014(Special)\u2014 What might have been a serious accident occurred here yesterday when Mr.Chas.Caswell, while at work at the Grand Trunk shops fell from a scaffold a distance of about 20 feet.He was rendered unconscious.Drs.Hayes and Tomkins were summoned and found he had sustained injuries to his head.The patient was removed to bis home on Craig letter was also read from Mrs.Cecil Bowen, standard hearer of the King George V.Chapter, withdrawing her resignation, which she had tendered on account of the impression that Reciprocity was one of
