LONDON, May 22.—The Labor Government is facing another ordeal in the House of Commons today, and notwithstanding the failure of their recent predictions on similar occasions to eventuate, the political writers again are prophesying the defeat of the ministry. The question at issue is the Governments policy toward unemployment.1 he Conservatives and many of the Liberals complain that the Government has done nothing to justify the claims of its spokesmen that labor alone has the remedy for unemployment, and some of the extremists among the Laborites agree—all saying that the Government has merely continued the policy of its predecessors. The Conservatives, accordingly, are moving today to reduce the salaiy of the Labor Minister, Tom Shaw, by £100, so as to enable the House to express its opinion.Hope of voting down the Government is based partly on the fact that a large number of Liberals are attending a party meeting at Brighton, thus preventing them from coming to the Government s aid should they decide for tactical reasons to waive the complaints, rife in Liberal ranks, of labor hostility. The vote, however, may be averted by the motion being taken out although the movers will try to prevent this.In any case the Govern-’ ment's position is not likely to be affected, and the worst happening if it is defeated will probably be that Shaw will lose £100 a year. The Minister of Labor has already indicated his line of defence, saying that, despite the criticism, the unemployment has shown phenomenal decline to the Government's policy.*-:-—___________________ * ?-> * * * * * .y.NEGOTIATIONS RE NEW GERMAN CABINET FAIL Nationals Insisted Upon Right to \\p.pefnt Admiral Von Tirpitz as New Chancellor.(Associated Press Despatch) BERLIN, May 22.—The nt'gotia-tiorn between the middle juarties and the German Nationalists on the subject of the formation of a Government have failed, owing to the Nationalists’ insistence upon their right to appoint Admiral Von Tirpitz as the new Chancellor. The other parties refused to dismiss a personal question of this nature until the policy of the future government was settled, whereupon tho negotiations broke down.Ü.S.AVIATORS HAVE ARRIVED ATKSU1IGAURA Flying Time for 354 Mile Hop Was Five Hours and Ten Min-y utes.(Assnciated Press Despatch) KSUMIGAURA, Japan, May, 22.¦—Three United States Army aviators flying around the world arrived at Ksumigaura, Japanese Naval aviation base fifty miles Northwest of Tokio at fi.40 p.m., today.Their flying time for (he 354 miles hop was five hours and ten minutes, and their flying time for the day’s two jumps, they having reached Minato from Yetorofu Island, in the.Kuriles, this morning, was twelve hours and forty minutes. The two jumps totalled over 'ICO miles.ONTARIO TEMPERANCE ACT IS UPHELD BY COURT.4* (Associated Press Despatch) ?* OTTAWA, May 22.— The » & Supreme Court this morning * dismissed the appeal in the * # case of Smith Vs.(he Ontario & Attorney General. The On- $£ (ario Temperance Act is & S?therefore upheld bv the court, ifc ? * .4.v a »*.j, .j, .STÀTËSTHAT ‘PETTING PARTY COST $362,000 Boston Merchant Told Court of Paying Money to Detectives, Lawyers and the Injured Woman.' which was given in the Beebe Town Hall, May 15th, under the auspices of the Ladies’ Guild, was superior to any thing of its kind ever put on here by local talent. It was a new and sparkling farce with a story of sustained interest abounding in mirth-provoking situations. There were ten characters and each one did their part well. The play moved briskly along with culminating effect, incident succeeding incident, and the act endings were quick and snappy, witl) plenty of movement for everybody, which kept the audience in a roar of laughter.Much praise is due to ail who took part in this play. The solo sung by the Rev.Mr.Bull between the first and second act was much enjoyed by all, also the violin soio played by Mr.Aram, between the second and third acts.An orchestra of four pieces Branby. With the permission of the Chairman the Rev.E.M.Taylor, of Knowlton, said a few words about old times, referring to a time when the whole of the Waterloo District was included in the Stanstead District. It was in the year 1870 that the May meeting was held in Sutton and the Pastor of Stanstead was the Rev.Charles A.Hanson, who attended the District driving to the village in the company of the Rev.E.M.Taylor M.A.At the table he was asked to move a vote of thanks to the ladies for their kind provision. In doing so he said thar.upon his approach to the village he had been startled to read upon several signs along the road side “Parsons Exterminated.” He had voiced his apprehensions to his companion who had drawn his attention to the fact that as there was a picture of a rat between th'-words, they probably meant parson’s Rat Exterminator and Mr.Hanson was accordingly relieved.Mr.Taylor went on to say that owing to ill health in t he home Mr.Hanson was obliged to leave the ministry for a time during which time he entered into business and established the well known firm of Hanson, Montreal. He was so successful in business that his gifts were recognized in England and he was called to London where he became Sheriff of London. He was afterwards Knighted and afterwards was found occupying the proud position of Lord Mayor of London. So that Sutton could look upon the fact that at least once in its history it had entertained one who became famous.Sir Charles Hanson nassed away some years ago and Lady Hanson more recently. The Chairman called upon the District to drink the toast to the ladies after which the District repaired to the church for the business of the afternoon. The first business of the afternoon session was to call the roll of has been accomplished in the Name of the Lord even though sometimes in the face of many difficulties, and 13 an encoiu'iuccmcnt t^> Muns- ters and Laymen alike to press forward. The Rev.S.W.Boyd brought to the attention of the District that as it is expected that soon there will be a plebicite in t he Countv of Brome for the bringing about a change in the Temperance Law and to put that County under the Quebec Liquor Act, it would be well for the District to take the matter under consideration. And he especially asked for those present who resided in t he County of Missis-quoi to give their opinions of the Quebec Liquor Act.Without exception the members present from that County condemned the Present Act and condition of affairs, and resolution was unanimously passed urging the people of Brome to maintain their present law. Also a resolution was passed to be sent to Conference and to Dr Moore urging our people in Ontario to maintain the Prohibition law of that Province rather than to permit any such law as the Quebec Liquor Act.On motion to adjourn being made, Hymn 372 was sung and the Rev.J.B.Hicks, B.A., pronounced the benediction.COMPTON Compton, like most town» and villages,
