IS NEW MAYOR OF MONTREAL Mederic Martin, for Ten Years Mayor and for Twenty-Five Years in Civic Affairs, Defeat-i ed in Civic Elections Yesterday.UNPARLIAMENTARY language by Alderman Langis, allegations by Mayor Brault that insinuations were being made, and insistence by Aldermen Bourque and Labrecque that copies of the auditors’ reports for 1921 and 1922 be furnished to each member of the Council, were among the outstanding leateres af a lengthy session of the City Council last evening, which concluded only at midnight.ÿhê prbpesed sale of the Purdy farm came up for discussion, remark by Alderman Bourque that he had refused to allow the report to leave his hands.Alderman Tetreault, chairman of the Finance Committee, explained that the reports had been on the table for a year and the members of the Council bad been notified.Aldennan Houlahan replied to the effect that if the report had been on the table it had been covered up, while Alderman Bourque contended that several members of the Finance Committee had only been shown the cover of the reports and given small extracts which had conveyed nothing of the true purport of the contents.Aldermen Bourque and Labrecque accordingly insisted that each member of the Council be furnished with copies of these reports which were being outlined in detail in the “Record.” Alderman Langis explained that while the books were unquestionably in a bad condition at the time referred to, great improvements had been made of late, and he felt sure that within the near future they would be found very satisfactory.Alderman Skinner reported on collections in the Water Department and gave a very good report of the work accomplished in recent months, showing that only one real bad account was now outstanding.DECIDE TO HOLD REFERENDUM ON DAYLIGHT SAVING HERE ON APRIL 30TH.Another very important issue, insofar as the citizens of Sherbrooke are concerned, was in connection with daylight saving, and jt was duly decided to hold a referendum on April 30th.Alderman Newton reported that the manufacturers were again in favor of adopting daylight saving, while Alderman Fortier reported that the religious authorities were stil lin favor of the clock being left unchanged, although they would be willing to abide by the decision of the electorate.Mr.E.C.Gatien forestalled Mayor Brault’s announcement of his resignation by reading a letter to the effect that, After deliberation with members of the Council, he withdrew his previous letter.Mr.J.T.Martel’s resignation was read by the April 8.—Mederic Martin, ten years mayor of Montreal, and prominent in civic affairs for some twenty-five years, passed from civic office yesterday, at least for the present, when Charles Duquette, practically unknown to public life until he became a candidate, was elected the new mayor of the city by a majority of 3,104 over his veteran opponent. The votes were: Duquette 12,183, Martin 39,079.J.H.Petit, a third candidate, polled 1,320 votes.Of twenty-one aldermen elected yesterday, seven will be new in the City Council Fourteen aldermen hail previously been elected by acclamation. There was no general sweep throughout the city for Mr.Duquette.Eighteen of the thirty-five wards gave Mayor Martin majorities, but several of the wards polled immense majorities for Duquette, notably Notre Dame de Grace, where the vote was 3,241 against 393.The defeated mayor took his defeat calmly and emphasized that his election had not cost him a cent.Of the fifteen aldermen who found opposition for re-election, only one was defeated, namely, Aid.Rochon, who lost in a sharp contest with ,T.V.Desaulniers in Mount Royal Ward.ARCHDUKE ATD EMPEROR m GERMANTS ANNUAL PAYMENTS nights, biliousness, backache, etc.—warn that the body is flooded with intestinal poisons. In time, these poisons may cause the breakdown of health and lead to serious disease. In constipation, say intestinal specialists, lies the primary cause of more than three-quarters of all illness including the gravest diseases of life.Hence, doctors urge internal cleanliness— regular and thorough removal of food waste from the body.Laxatives Aggravate Constipation Laxatives and cathartics do not overcome constipation, says a noted authority, but by their continued use tend only to aggravate the condition and often lead to permanent injury. Why Physicians Favor Lubrication Medical science, through knowledge of the intestinal tract gained by X-ray observation, has found at last in
