make any man feel that he is growing stale.Though I have ye; , two more of the cultured and inspirational articles ' from my friend, Grenville Kieiser, they will be daily sandwiched in with the less worthy literary effort. It is good to be back again; to sit and look over 1 the news of the world, to receive many welcome visitors, and to respond to kindly greetings from many friends. It was a pleasing episode when I returned or; Monday morning and read the Saturday’s greeting, written by Gordon Miller, in which he voiced the acclaim of himself and his staff on the news that the Editor would be again on deck.Tucked tidily away in the corner cf the paper was this expression of cordial good-will which is sincerely reciprocated by one who has the honour to head a loyal corps of fifty workers—a staff to be proud of.The title “Red Roses for Jim,’’ we borrow from a book written by a distinguished authoress who live» quietly in Sherbrooke, but whom few people know by sight.Yet her books have an English-wide sale.POOR SPORTSMEN.It is not playing the game when a member of Parliament being absent from the House, or wishing to evade an issue arrange; a “pairing’’ or a saw-off with a member of the other party. That is one phase which they have not been able to coax the C.C.F.or Ladiet’ Party into. But it is poor sportsmanship when a member who ii paired gets up in the House after a vole and bai inieribed in Hansard word* like thiz: “I am paired with the honorable member for Who's Who, but had 1 voted I would have voted Aye!” He has placed himself on record without giving the absentee “paired” member an opportunity to declare himself. In other wordi this chap would dispute with the umpire when his bails have clicked noisily to the ground. It is an evasion which is an aversion.EDITOR’S NOTE BOOK, Are we expected to subscribe for stock in a Central Bank of Canada by taking money out of our feound banks, which have withstood adversity, and , place it in a bank which is an experiment?Bigger men than any of the Commoners have started banks to give the people a chance to relieve the necessities of the promoters—started them to our sorrow. We could recite a few of the Twentieth Century vintage, which are still fresh in the memory of the losers.* • • When two hundred and forty-five members of Parliament sit for six months, each day opening with hands folded for prayers, what chance has the average taxpayer got for his money?GETTING RESULTS.Grenville Kieiser.Men work in different ways. One man is always busy, always pressed for time, always complaining that the days are too short, and yet he accomplishes little of value.Another man is deliberate, quiet, and reposeful, but by the close of the day or the week he achieves much.Men who are intent upon accomplishing the best results are wholly unlike those who are occupied wi'th thoughts of how hard they are working, or how fast they are turning nut work, or how unappreciated they are, or what difficulties beset them. They have neither time nor inclination to think whether their work is strenuous or difficult, since they are looking for results rather than lor recognition. Some men are plodders, others work by impulse.Because of differences of temperament no two persons go about the same thing in the same way.The man and the method, however, must be largely judged by the actual results achieved. If you are by nature a plodder, endeavour to cultivate alertness and enthusiasm in your daily work. The word “plodder,” unfortunately, is associated in the minds of most men with lethargy. The plodder is usually “slow but sure.” In so far as plodding indicates steadiness and perseverance of effort, it is a desirable quality, but if you belong to this dass of men it will greatly augment your productiveness if you cultivate mental and physical alertness. If you are an impulsive worker, endeavour to cultivate poise and deiiberateness in your daily work.Develop the habit of doing things slowly and quietly.Take time to think before you speak or act.Endeavor to bring your mental powers under proper control. Many business men think out their best thoughts and plans during leisure hours.Their leisure, therefore, is not waste of time.Their mental eyes are open to discern new ideas which may be applied in practical ways.Their habit of meditation and reflection enables them to turn their so-called leisure time to good account. It is not here suggested that you should always be thinsing of your business. That would be as imprudent as it would be undesirable. But you can advantageously use your spare time for meditation, reflection and self-culture.Carefully discriminate between true and false What Editors Say VACATION TIME HAS ARRIVED.Owtn Sound Sun-Timte.This is a season of the year which most people look forward to with pleasurable anticipation, especially those who can take a vacation without interfering with their business.Of course, the school children welcome these two months of holidays and relaxation from the restraint which surrounds them during the greater part of the year. They are better fitted at the end of August to return to their studies.People who are engaged in work of an exacting nature are glad when the time arrives for them to get away from their office, factory, etc., for a two-week period. They are better for their absentation, provided they are able to forget the cares of business for a time.A vacation is of little use to a person who, even though he may be many miles away, continues to fret and worry about how things are going at home.Usually things go along just about as well without them for such a short period. There are many, however, who are so situated as to be unable to enjoy the pleasures of a vacation.Their calling in life may be such that to leave for any length of time would be detrimental, although even some of these might take leave of absence if they made up their minds to do it.The tired business man who can afford to have a summer home located in some semi-secluded spot not far from his place of business and who even for the evenings, on Sunday and the weekly halfholiday, may hide away there, may be considered fortunate. He can get a certain amount of relaxation each year and still be able to look after his affairs.Everyone who can possibly do so should take a vacation, even if only for one week.He owes it to himself; he is better off physically and mentally, and comes back refreshed and in a more optimistic frame of mind to carry on the arduous life which accompanies every business.economy.True economy means intelligent thrift, particularly in matter; of time, money and energy. It means intelligent self-denial now, for the prospect of future independence.Spend less than you earn, but be consistent in your economy.Do not save here and be extravagant there. In order to be honest and critical with yourself in money matters, keep a record of your income and expenditure, and for this purpose carry a small notebook in your pocket.Do not run into debt. This refers more particularly to your personal affairs, and should be the first principle in your business when practicable. Many men are tempted into opening accounts with local trades-people, where it would be greatly to their advantage to pay cash.Debt easily leads to extravagance and carelessness.Economy means beingiemperate, provident, and farseeing, and if you practice these habits there will be littie danger of your running into debt. The effort of trying to save money for a worthy purpose will give you a mental stimulus. It will also develop in you self-restraint and other valuable qualities which make for exceptional success. The independence which a bank account confers upon a man is far-reaching in its results. It gives him a feeling of confidence and security to know that he has money in readiness for possible ernergen-cies.it gives him, too, the choice of independent action in money matters.A good plan for the beginner is to deposit a regular amount of money, however small, once a week or once a month, as may be most convenient.A small amount of money, deposited regularly, will mount up rapidly in the course of a few months, and the regularity of the habit engendered in this way will manifest itself in other respects.AMENITIES OF PARLIAMENT.Kingstca Whig-Standard During the last day of the Parliamentary session the Commons was the scene of two verbal exchanges between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition of an interestingly contrasting nature. They occurred at opposite ends of the day’s sitting. Here is the first as recorded by Hansard: Right Hon.W.L.Mackenzie King: I understand that this is the Prime Minister’s birthday.I should like to extend to my right hon.friend my very best wishes for many happy returns of the day, and perhaps on this occasion he will allow me to* speak for the house and to extend these wishes on behalf of us all.Right Hon.R.B.Bennett: The very unusual and kindly act of the right hon.the leader of the Opposition I shall not soon forget.Through you, Mr.Speaker, I should like to thank him for having thought of so gracious an act as that which he has just now done and, more, for the felicitous terms in which he has expressed it.I have had a very interesting and hardworking life; I have enjoyed the one and gained much experience from the other. In the dying minutes of the sitting—very shortly before the Commons was summoned to the Senate ! Chamber for prorogation — Mr.King directed the attention of Mr., Bennett to the speech at the Do-! minion Day dinner in London by Sir Edward Peacock in which he made a strong plea for the formation of a national government in Canada. In the consequent exchange of remarks there occurred this dialogue, to quote Hansard again ; Mr.Mackenzie King; Would the Prime Minister approve what Sir Edward Peacock has said?Mr.Bennett: P-erhaps I might ask the right hon.gentleman what he.thinks about it.Mr.Mackenzie King: I think almost any government would be better than the present one.Mr.Bennett: Well, I fancy the right hon.gentleman means what he says, that in his opinion any government would be better than the present one.I can also say that I can conceive none that would be as bad as the one that he would create.Mr.Mackenzie King: The right hon.gentleman may have an opportunity of seeing the effect of a change before long.rS " THIRTY YEARS AGO TODAY FARMERS’ CLUB Scripture reading was given by Rev.I, Nelson, retiring minmter. At the close of the inductional service, ail retired to the Campbell Hall where a reception was held and Rev.and Mrs, Ailenby presented to those present, Mr.S.A.Windsor, who presided over the re ception, first made a most appreciative reference to the nine years of sincere and wholehearted Christian service which the Rev.f.Nelson had given in this field, and as a tangible token of the esteem of the official board and church members, presented him with a pm.-.c, to which Mr.Nelson made a most feeling and appropriate reply Beautiful baskets of roses were then presented to Mrs.I.Ne Iron and Mrs.Danville, July 11.— Fowler’s Grove was the scene of one of the largest gatherings of its kind ever held in this locality, when the Central Association of the United Farmers of Canada, Quebec branch, in conjunction with the Danville section held their third annual picnic and field day.The Danville members had left no stone unturned in preparing the grounds and at an early hour people began to arrive on foot, in horse-drawn vehicles and in motor cars until a gathering estimated at 1,500 persons had congregated.Lunch was enjoyed in the shade of the stately maples which have witnessed many similar gatherings in the past century.Immediately after lunch the crowd re-assembled to hear several speeches.President Hilton R.Ross, of Sherbrooke, was chairman, and welcomed the guests in a few appropriate words, expressing the opinion that the large number of farmers gathered together on this occasion augured well for the future of the organization, which is making steady progress throughout the Eastern Townships.Dr.F.H.Pickel, M.P.for Brome-Missisquoi, who was introduced as "The Farmers’ Friend,” was the first speaker. In his opening remarks Dr.Pickel referred to the loss sustained by the organization in the passing of the late president, Edwin Dueker, to whom he paid a splendid tribute. Then speaking directly to the farmers, he urged every farmer to join the United Farmer movement as their one means of salvation from their present predicament, “Because,” he said, “in union there is strength.” He also urged members to attend the meetings, support their officers and lend a hand in carrying on the work.Passing on to recently enacted legislation directly affecting the farmer, Dr.Pickel gave an explanation of the Natural Products Marketing Act.This act, he pointed out, was not designed as some people thought to restrict production, but to control the marketing of farm produce and thus enhance their value by preventing the markets being glutted.Dr.Pickel also explained the provisions of Bill No.92, by means of which farmers may secure compromises with their creditors through the medium of county receivers and review courts.J.E.Lyness, of Richmond, who has been active in farmers’ union work for the yast fifteen years, speaking in French urged the French-speaking fai’mers to join hands with their English confreres and present a solid front.Following the speeches a well-arranged sports programme was run off. There were races for all, from the tiny tots to their grandfathers and some of the latter showed speed which would make some of the younger set look to their laurels.Splendid prizes, which were donated by the merchants of Sherbrooke, Lennoxville, Danville, Asbestos and others were given for each event. This part of the day's attraction was held in the field adjoining the grove and competition was keen in every class. The piece-de-resistance for many was the tug-of-war which was held in a roped-in enclosure and so great was the interest and excitement that even the ropes could not hold some of the spectators and they surged in on the contestants in an effort to encourage their favorite team. There were five seniors and three junior teams entered and in the senior class the team wearing the colors of the Danville section of the United Farmers, showing the benefit of much practice under Coach R.C.Johnston and a considerable advantage in weight, emerged as victors. The other teams competing were: Castlebar, Danville Town, Pinnacle Road and Dennison’s Mills. In the junior section the Brompton Road team seemed to have acquired the knack of "pulling” from their elders and were successful in vanquishing Danville Town and United Farmers teams but only after exerting themselves to the limit. The refreshment canteen, which was in charge of the Danville committee, did a flourishing business throughout the .day purveying ice cream, soft drinks, fruit, etc.The sun was sinking low in the west when the crowd dispersed, tired, but happy, after a pleasant outing, memories of which will linger long in the minds of all those present.President H.R.Ross, of Sherbrooke, and W.A.Findlay, of Danville, with their respective sec retaries, W.H.A.Smith and S.S.Olney, are to be complimented on the way in which they and their able committees carried out the day’s programme, and many favorable commente were, heard on the work of the sports committee. The prize winners were as follows :— dose of arsenic poison.Dr.Rosario Fontaine, Quebec medico-legal expert, and doctors at the St.Vincent de Paul Hospital declared that the symptoms of Chapdelaine’s illness preceding his death indicated arsenic poisoning. The woman stood trial before Mr.Justice Charles D.White in the local Court of King’s Bench and was found guilty of murder and sentenced to hang. However, she was granted a second trial when it was proved that an alleged confession had been obtained from her by provincial police under dui'ess. With the confession and certain parts of the original evidence excluded as proof, the woman stood trial before Mr.Justice Louis Cousineau for the second time last fall, and was again convicted and sentenced to hang.Mrs.C.Gaunter, Court street, is !by the serious illness of her son, Mr.' - Jack Starr, who was injured in an automobile accident and is a patient in the Sherbrooke Hospital, is a guest during her stay at Armitage’s Cabins, Montreal Road.* * * Dr.and Mrs.F.H.Bradley announce the engagement of their daughter, Margaret Alice, to Mr.William Mitchell, son of the Hon.W.G.Mitchell, of Montreal. The wedding will take place Saturday, August 4th, at 12 noon, in St.Mark’s Chapel, University of Bishop’s College, Lennoxville, spending some time at Ayer’s Cliff, wheie she is a guest of Mr.and Mrs.Warren L.Place.» * * Mrs.Florence Bunclark and Master Lloyd Hutchinson motored to Galetta, Ont., where they are guests of Mr.and Mrs.R.E.Year.* * » Miss Katherine McDougall, Drummond Road, has left for Charlottetown, P.E.I., to spend her vacation with her aunt, Miss Ethel McDougall.Guy Lombardo's Orchestra; WEAF: 1 taining their twenty-five year old state prohibition law barring hard liquors was hailed as a signal triumph for the prohibition forces of which Governor Sennett Conner is a leader. The Governor signed the bill for submission of the issue to the people and then campaigned actively for the dry vote.News; WEAF: Freddie Burns' Orchestra; KDKA: Freddy Mack’s Orchestra.WEAF—New York.960 CFCF—Montreal . . . .60i) WJZ—New York.76* CRCM—Montreal.910 CKAC—Montreal . .730 KDKA—Pittsburgh.9g0 WABC—New York.**o WGY—Schenectady.790 MISSISSIPPI VOTES TO CONTINUE AS DRY STATE The many friends of Mr.William » * * C.Clark will be pleased to hear that [ Competition was keen in yester-he is progressing favorably after his 1 day’s approaching and putting con-opc-ration at the Montreal General | rest for Class “B.” players at the Hospital. Sherbrooke Country Club, and result- * * * ed in a tie between Mrs.T.R.Mac- The flowers on the altar in St.! and Miss Florence Ingram. In Paul’s Church on Sunday were given I play-off Miss Ingram won out.hv Mr.and Mrs.Stanley Odell in ; Members of Class A.indu.gea in memory of the former’s i a,.sv’e.ePs*-a|ce1> ,W^1C^ was woa loving mother, Mrs.Walter Odell, of Eus lis Que, * * * Mrs.J.Stone, of Coaticook, announces the engagement of her second daughter, Agnes Irene Falconer, io Cyril James Morgan, youngest son of Mr.and Mrs.H.J.Morgan, Sherbrooke. The marriage will take place quietly in August.Miss Ave Walsh. The following lady members of ^ the Sherbrooke Country Club are in Windsor Mills this afternoon participating in a special field day for players with a thirty-six handicap: Mrs.T.R.Mackenzie, Mrs.Gordon Miller, Mrs.S.R.Fuller, Mrs.J.R.Simms, Mrs.J.T.Hawkins, Mrs.L.A.Darey, Mrs.M.Graham, Mrs.R.i G, Costley, Mrs.R.N.Ogilvy, Mrs.Miss Florence Dunsmore, Espla-i.I.K.Edwards, Mrs.F.W.Nofcross, Incomplete Unofficial Returns from Yesterday’s Prohibition Referendum Record Defeat of Hard Liquor Bill by Approximately Two to One.Jackson.Miss., July 11.—Mississippi held its place among the dry states today by a vote of approximately two to one.Incomplete unofficial returns from yesterday’s prohibition referendum showed defeat of the hard liquor bill by a vote of 47,275 to 25,246 in 658 of the 1,596 p-erincts of the state. The -wets conceded defeat.By voting dry the people rebuked their Legislature. The la-st Legislature authorized beer at the same time it put the liquor issue before the voters, and four per cent, beer wras just as far as Mississippians chose to go in the legalization of alcoholic beverages. The victory of the drys in re- Give Them VARIETY We cater to the appetite by providing different varieties of bread.Try them all — Butter Krust, Delicrust, Sandwich, Crusty Sticks, Wholewheat, Raisin, Perfection Rye, Fruit Rye and Cheese Bread.ALLATT’S Just Phone 724w nade avenue, had returned home after spending the past ten days at “Linger-A-While” cottage, Woodland Bay, a guest of Mr.and Mrs.Arthur Jobe!.Miss Barbara Dunsmore is spent a few- days with "Who is a!
