) Weather Tu*»day sunny with cloudy periods and a tew scattered showers later in the day.Becoming warmer and humid.Light winds.High today and low tonight 75 and 55.Seventy-second year Postal talks showing a degree of progress OTTAWA (CP) — Negotiators took fresh aim Sunday at a set-11 e m e n t of Canada's postal strike and apparently made some progress in 14 hours of talks. They recessed shortly before 3 a m.EOT today and were to start again at 10 a.m.“I think we have done a good day’s work,” said Judge Rene Lippe, federal mediator, after the long session. He declined further comment on the status of the discussions. But a source close to the situation said extended talks in this new phase of mediatoin could be interpreted as a sign of progress. The nation-wide walk-out of 24,000 postal workers is in its 19th day, with speculation flying in Ottawa that the government will make a move to call Parliament into a strike-ending session unless agreement is reached soon.CABINET TO MEET A meeting of the federal cabinet has been scheduled for Tuesday.Cabinet usually meets on Wednesday.Judge Lippe, during a dinner-break Sunday, told reporters: “Surely we must be coming to some deadline sometime.” He added: “We have been talking very seriously.” Mediation broke off Wednesday after Romeo Mathieu, chief negotiator for the Council of Postal Unions, turned down a new government wage offer. It took four days to get back to the bargaining table.MEET AT LUNCH Judge Lippe, Mr.Mathieu and Douglas Love, the treasury board official heading the government team, sat down together at noon and worked through a lunch of sandwiches and chocolate cake. There was a separate meeting during the afternoon between Judge Lippe and the government’s negotiating team, then the mediator went back into a joint session with Mr.Mathieu and Mr.Love at 5 p.m.The three men went separate ways for dinner and a final joint session was launched at 10:30 p.m.There were indications that Sunday’s talks went back to the complex subject of working con- ditions, at least in their early stages.Sources had predicted Saturday that new wage positions from both sides were in the works and that a break in the deadlock could come soon. The council’s public position, unchanged from its original demand, asks a 75-cent hourly increase in a 14-month contract retroactive to Aug.1 last year. This is an increase of about 29 per cent over the average hourly wage of $2.57.The government offer, laid down last Wednesday and rejected then by the council, would increase wages by 19 per cent over 38 months. This comes to about 49 cents an hour in a three-stage schedule.News in brief 78 dead At least 78 persons died in weekend accidents acioss Canada, 57 in traffic.A survey by The Canadian Press from 6 p.m, Friday to midnight Sunday, local times, also showed 15 drownings, three deaths by fire and three in other accidents.Fire on ear YORK, Pa - (AP) - A police vehicle was fired on Sunday night as a wave of sporadic shooting, window - smashing and rock throwing broke out here in what York’s public safety director called “a planned operation." Two fires were set.Jacob W.Hose said the trouble started at 9 p.m.EDT in the same area where a gun battle had erupted Saturday night.Police said Negro youths ranging from 18 to 25 began tossing rocks at passing motorists.Later in the evening, a meat store was “firebombed.” Up tight scene MADRID —(Reuters)— Gen.Francisco Franco’s government today placed the northern Basque province of guipuzcoa under a state of emergency for three months following increasing violence by Basque nationalist terrorists.A law published in the official state bulletin suspended three articles of the Fuero de los Es-panoles, Sapin’s Bill of Rights.Hits airliner MILWAUKEE - (AP) - A project airliner, with wreckage of a light plane and the bodies of its three young passengers ' embedded in its side, landed safely Sunday before most of the 10 passengers aboard the bigger plane knew what happened.Capt Ted Baum, 43, of Skokie, 111., brought the twin - engined plane in with one engine dead and his co-pilot badly injured.Bomb threat GANDER.Nfld (CP) - A big Lufthansa jetliner with 157 persons aboard made an unscheduled stop here early today after a bomb threat was received by the airline's New York office.A spokesman for Eastern Provincial Airways, the agents here, said a thorough search revealed no trace of a bomb aboard the Boeing 707, which left New York for Frankfurt Back English MONTREAL (CP) - Leaders of two Quebec separatist groups which Friday announced merger plans, said Sunday English-speaking Quebecers will be guaranteed the right to educate their children in their own language, culture, heritage and traditions in an independent Quebec. The guarantee was made in a four-part statement signed by Rene Levesque, leader of the 7.000- rnember Mouvement Sou-verainete-Association, and Gilles Grégoire, leader of the 12.000- member Ralliement National. The statement, released MONTREAL (CP) - Yves Lagace, 21, of Sherbrooke, Que., died Saturday of pneumonia 24 hours after his second kidney transplant in six months.Dr.J.Gilbert Turner, executive director of Royal Victoria Hospital, where the operation was performed, said Mr.Lagace “developed a severe case of pneumonia” which doctors were unable to combat because of his “serious” condition.:-r.; t* * UT1 at a news conference, said: “You cannot ignore Quebec’s 1,500,000 Anglophones. They have the fundamental right to their language and education.A sovereign state of Quebec will work for its own needs, but we’ll respect the rights of the minority.” Following merger talks Friday, the MSA and the RN announced they would form a single organization and form a political party this fall. But a third organization involved in the merger talks, the 13,000-member Rassemblement pour l’independance nationale Mr.Lagace, whom Dr.Turner described as “a very sick man,” had undergone an operation earlier last week to remove his first substitute kidney and the two operations within such a short time severely weakened him.The doctor said the second transplanted kidney was functioning satisfactorily when the patient died at 10 p.m.The young man earlier had been reported “doing well” after receiving the kidney of Donald Robert Allen, an 18-year-old Montrealer killed when his motorcycle collided with a car at an intersection.Mr.Lagace had been ill with kidney disease for several years and was being kept alive by means of a dialysis machine, which removes impurities from the blood, normally cleaned by the kidneys. He received his first kidney transplant October but the organ was removed earlier last week when it showed signs of infection.rights led by Pierre Bourgault, refused to enter into the merger, saying it was unacceptable to give state support to English-language schools.Mr.Bourgault said his party could not accept Mr.Levesque’s position that English-speaking Quebecers have “full rights.” His party would continue to operate as a political party offering the Quebec electorate “the only choice for true independence.” Mr.Levesque md Mr.Grégoire said at the news conference Sunday they had spent the weekend working out policies to guide the MSA-RN merger which they said would come about at a convention to be held this fall.Mr.Levesque said they had agreed to work for the creation of a sovereign state with French as the first language and for the institution of a social, democratic and cultural program to develop the state of Quebec. The two leaders had agreed upon rights for English-speaking residents of the province and on negotiations with Canada for a treaty to develop an economic association in which Quebec would have its own taxation and monetary institutions.Mr.Levesque said he and Mr.Grégoire had reached total agreement on these points and a more detailed program would be worked out between now and the fall congress.Mr.Levesque resigned from the provincial Liberal party last fall to sit as an independent for Montreal Laurier after a meeting of the Quebec Liberal Federation refused to consider his proposals for a sovereign Quebec associated in an economic union with Canada.Mr.Grégoire was formerly independent member of Parliament for Lapointe. He did not contest the June 25 federal election.Yves Lagace dies after operation Pope was misunderstood Pope Paul said Sunday his encyclical banning artificial birth control has been misunderstood by some critics and emphasized it does not bar "reasonable” limitation of families.Meanwhile, the dispute among Roman Catholics over obedience to the papal ban showed no sign of abating.Addressing thousands of pilgrims to his summer residence south of Rome, the 70-year-old pontiff said the policy he proclaimed “is not in itself opposed —as some seem to think—to a reasonable limitation of birth, nor to scientific research and therapeutic cures, nor even to a truly responsible parenthood nor to peace and family harmony.” The Pope’s encyclical, Of Human Life, renewed the Inside Births, deaths 5 many who have not appreciated our teaching. In fact many oppose it.In a certain sense we can understand this incomprehension and also this opposition ” But he gave no indications of retreating from his decision and said his encyclical "is derived from the laws of God." While not issued as infallible, the encyclical is considered binding on the world's 500,000 Roman Catholics.today American Catholic theologians opposing the Pope’s ban on artificial contraception has risen "I am surprised and saddened by the actions of these gentlemen—actions which are setting the church on fire," said Washington’s Patrick Cardinal O’Boyle in a sermon urging obedience to the Pope. But later in the day 52 of the priests in the cardinal’s archdiocese signed a declaration reaffirming the position taken before the encyclical by the Association of Washington Priests that Catholics have the right “to responsibility practice birth control.” The Pope s position was also supported by John Cardinal Cody, the archbishop of Chicago, and by Msgr Thomas J.McGovern of the archdiocese of New York. But in Albany, N.Y., Rev.Bernard J.Lannon told woship pers at final-hour pincer movement continued to deny Richard Nixon his second Republican presidential nomination as the party launched its 26th leadership convention today. That move—by Gov.Nelson Rockefeller of New York from one side and Gov.Ronald Reagan of California from the other —provided the main drama in what appeared to be a cut-and-dried situation.Everett Dirksen, Senate Republican leader, bluntly put his money on Nixon, who was vice-president during the Eisenhower years from 1952 to I960, by saying: “I think he is so close to striking distance that .I don’t think he can be stopped.’’ An Associated Press poll showed Nixon with 572 votes— only 95 short of the 667 he needs to win.Rockefeller had 232, Reagan 161, favorite sons accounted for 231 and there were 137 uncommitted. As a prelude to the five-day convention in this tourist mecca, the party resolution committee finally produced a draft platform labelled as generally moderate, VIETNAM A PRIORITY Chief interest from the American political viewpoint was the section on the Vietnam war calling for a “strategy permitting a progressive de-Americanization of the war, both military and civilian." Otherwise, generally, it was so imprecise as to provide Nixon, or whoever is chosen, wth ample leeway in the cam paign leading up to the Nov.5 Platform on Vietnam mild See on.” Even Reagan, a “fight-to-win” advocate on Vietnam, indicated he would accept the platform as a basic guidepost. The actual candidate choice will be made Wednesday night by the 1,333 official delegates from the 50 states, polled state by state.BLOCKING NIXON The Rockefeller-Reagan strategy, operating through demonstrations, final newspaper and television ads and last-ditch pressure applied to delegates, has been to stop Nixon from winning on the first or second ballots in hopes his support will crumble. The secondary choice for the convention will be a running mate as vice-president.In the past this has been much more of a formality.Republican nominee Barry Gold-water in 1964, for example, chose William Miller of New York state because, he said, Miller got under the skin of President Johnson Czech chiefs and Red press assume people that PRAGUE (CP) - A truce prevailed in the Soviet bloc today with Czechoslovakia’s liberal Communist leaders and the Soviet press each assuring their people all is well in the wake of the Bratislava conference Observers in Prague foresaw more strains between Czech leaders and such defenders of the Communist status quo as Water Ulbricht of East Ger many and Wladyslaw Gomulka of Poland. But the future looked brighter for party chief Alexander Dubcek and his associates than it had in many weeks.Dubcek gave fresh assurances to dispel any lingering suspicions that his group had been forced off their liberal course by the Russians and their allies at the meetings in Slovakia last week.“We are determined to continue on the road we have taken,” Dubcek said in a broadcast Sunday night.“For the people of this republic there is no other way.” He noted that the joint declaration signed at the meeting contained a virtual hands off pledge that leaves Czechoslovakia free to continue its new course, GIVEN GUARANTEE The document guaranteed the right of every party to develop all is well along its own lines, “taking into account the national character istic and conditions" of each country. It also bound all signatories to close co-operation in matters dealing with foreign policy.Dubcek appealed to the coun try to begin a sober implementation of the tasks set by the party’s reformist program—including mending ideological fences with East Germany and Poland.Despite his assurances nothing vital was sacrificed in the summit talks, there were some persons here who sensed danger to the promise of free speech, Shooting continues across Jordan TEL AVIV (AP) - Arab and Israeli forces exchanged fire across the River Jordan for the second straight day today following a retaliatory strike by Israeli warplanes which the Israelis claimed destroyed Arab guerrila only 15 miles from the Jordanian capital of Amman. An Israeli army spokesman said Jordanian troops rained ba zooka and mortar shells on three settlements in the Beisan Valley Israeli forces returned the fire, he said, and no Asraeli casualties were reported Israeli jets streaked across the River Jordan Sunday and dealt what military spokesmen called “a substantial blow” to Arab guerrilla bases Inside Jordan.Jordan reported 23 civilians and five of its soldiers killed in the air attack and 82 persons wounded. It claimed one U.S.-built Israeli Skyhawk jet was downed But Israel said all of its planes returned safely. Both Jordan and Israel notified the UN Security Council of the air raid, and Jordan charged the Israelis with aggression. But neither asked for any UN action The air strike—first in two months against Jordanian territory—“completely destroyed two guerrilla bases near the town of Salt, 11 miles across the River Jordan and 15 miles west of the capital, the Israeli chief of staff, Maj.-Gen.Haim Bar-Lev reported Premier Levi Eshkol said the attack was in retaliation for a month of increased guerrilla activity by Arab infiltrators based in Jordan He warned that stepped -up infiltration was creating “the same chain of events which led to the June war” in 1967 “The enemy shall be made to pay the price in full,” he declared.A similar warning was given in leaflets in Arabic dropped by the attacking Israeli warplanes The leaflets proclaimed "Saboteurs—we shall reach you. Those who succeed in crossing the lenses for science, operates a three-day school for camera buffs every week. It’s free, but arrangements have to be made well in advance by writing to the school for admission to a Monday-to-Wednesday course in English, French or another language.Wetzlar is about an hour's train ride north of Frankfurt, in rolling hill country on a tributary of the Rhine River The old part of the city, where Leitz will arrange modest hotel accommodation, perches on top of a hill dominated by its ancient cathedral.Once in Wetzlar, it’s a short walk through the crooked, narrow and hilly streets of the old town to the Leitz plant and its ultra-modern reception centre, where the Leica school classes are held.PRACTICAL COURSE Classes start sharp at 9 a.m, with a 45-minute lunch break, and continue to about 4:30 p.m.It’s necessary to arrive in Wetzlar on a Sunday evening. And don’t plan on leaving until Thursday morning.Monday's first class is a survey of the latest models of Leica cameras, and each stu- dent is given a 35-mm.rangefinder and a reflex camera to play with, along with an assortment of lenses.Monday afternoon, if the weather is fine, the class takes to the streets of Wetzlar on a photo expedition. There are fine telephoto shots across the lazy Lahn River of the old cathedral, 16th century buildings leaning into the cobbled streets, fountains.school boys fishing, and a wide range of subjects available.Even the roll of black and white film you’ll shoot is free from Leitz. The company will develop it.make a proof sheet, and blow up your four best Rotary by McGill School leader Dufcur & Pelland 184 Wellington North — Sherbrooke MOVING AUGUST 12th to 144 Wellington St.N STiVNSTEAD—Regional concepts, was the topic of a talk by Dr.Jan Lundgren, head of the Regional Study, McGill Summer School at Stanstead College, who spoke on July 29 at the Boundary Rotary Club meeting at Dufferin Heights Country Club.AUGUST 10 - It MARBLETON Watch for Progrom odvertisement August 8th in this paper.Describing how a region is actually established and how it changes with the passing of time, Dr.Lundgren said one finds the core is the human factor, a ten-year-old has a different outlook than a 50-year-old man.Other factors are educational background, geographical, depending upon the sources of supply, its economics and manufacturers look upon regions from the viewpoint of their markets, so various and different regions are established.Transportation and purchase power enters into the picture, so does a poor farming area, and thus sets a different region.Regions and zones become fixed by countries, springing from functional factors, administration of regions, brought about by autoroutes and changes of accessibility.Changes come as time passes from the pioneer days, from the horse and buggy days to the present space and atomic age.The early days are now old-fashioned, not good enough, obsolete.LML ABNER Speaking of the Lake Mem-phremagog problem, Dr.Lundgren mentioned that as an international body of water it is under the Quebec Provincial and Federal governments of Canada and that of the United States. The lake pollution is regional and the area affected depends upon the resources point of view.“We have scenery and water” he said, but the regional concepts is a changing factor and to try to solve the lake problem like this, costs a lot of money.Speaking from the economical point of view, Dr.Lundgren asked, ‘‘How much is the estimate value of the late in dollars and cents as it is now and how AUG 5, 1968 Houle pitches one-hitter Sher-Lenn blanks Dorval 8-0 DORVAL — A grand slam home run by Yves Longpre and 12 strikeouts by Norman Houle was the story of the big 8 0 win by the Sher-Lenn Little League All-Stars over Dorval Little League Saturday afternoon at Courtland Park, Dorval.Tihs was the fourth win in a row for the Sher-Lenn squad as they defeated Cowansville 23-3, Valleyfield twice, 5-0 and 7-6.The Sher-Lenners now meet Kiwanis Maisonneuve at Dorval tonight at Courtland Park.Game time is 6 p.m.Should the Sher-Lenners lose tonight they will meet Dorval Tuesday evening. The three teams left in the Regional playoffs must lose two games before they are eliminated.Saturday’s game was played under blazing hot sun with a temperature of eighty-four de-greets but this did not seem to upset the youngsters as both teams played good ball. The Sher-Lenn boys power at the plate was another feature of the game. They connected for a total of 12 hits off Cook and Lebel, the respective Dorval pitchers Mayor Armand Nadeau of Sherbrooke arrived shortly before game time and his few words to Coach Amedee Roy and his players seemed to boost the morale of the Sher-Lenn boys. The crowd of over two thousand who watched the game enjoyed all the action.A bus load of fans and quite a few cars made the journey to Dorval from Sherbrooke and the local fans really enjoyed it.The Sher-Lenn boys were the first team to bat and they faced Cook, a rather edgy pitcher, who, in the innings he worked, seemd to have quite a dislike for the way the plate umpire THE WORLD OF By TED ANDERSON was calling the play.A few words from the umpire soon put him straight as to who was calling the balls and strikes. In the top of the opening inning Denis Rose, first man up went grounded out.Roger Roy flied to rightfield and Houle singled.Yves Longpre with a double sent Houle to third but Randy Warner struckout to end the inning. In the last of the first Montgomery, Dorval’s lead-off hitter grounded to shortstop Roy.The next two batter flied out.In the top of the second Deschanes went down swinging, Laforest went out shortstop to first and Pierre Provencher, next batter, connected for a long single to rightfield.Denis Choquette was grounded out to end the first part of the second inning.Norman Houle sent the Dor- val batters all down on strikeouts in the last of the second. In the top of the third the Sher Lenn boys got to Cook coming up with singles from Norman Houle and Conrad Deschanes. The hits coupled with two walks sent two runs across the plate.Houle duplicated his second inning feat by sending down the Dorval batters swinging in the last of the third The fourth was the big Sher-Lenn inning that salted away the win.Pierre Provencher started things off with a single.Denis Choquette, next batter, also connected for a single sending Deschanes to second.Denis Rose with a single drove Provencher home.Roger Roy got on with a walk as did Norman Houle to load the bases.Yves Longpre followed with a grand slam home run that made it eight nothing in Sher-Lenn's favor.Randy Warner and Deschanes struckout and Laforest was forced out at second base to end the inning. It was nothing across for Dorval in the last of the fourth as Houle again retired the side on strikes. There was no further scoring in the fifth and sixth. The Sher-Lenn boys got singles from Longpre, Rose and Landry in the last two innings.Coach Roy went to his bench in the last two innnings giving each boy a part in the win.Cook in the third inning was the only man to get a hit off Houle.Big men for Sher-Lenn were Longpre with a single, double and grand slam.Denis Rose had two singles, Norma Houle singled and doubled.Sher-Lenn 002 600—8 12 1 Dorval 000 000-0 1 2 Houle and into the top corner.(Record photo: Gerry Lemay) Olympics in playoffs, edge Indians, trounce Braves ?* RACES + * 968 Sherbrooke Olympics assured themselves of a playoff berth over the weekend by edging the Caughnawaga Indians 9-7 Sat urday evening in Verdun and then returning home last night to trounce the Valleyfield Braves 15-4 before 1,453 fans at the Sports Palace The wins coupled with a loss by Sorel last night gave the Olympics sole possession of third place in the Quebec Lacrosse League standings.Drummondville downed the Sorel Titans 14-7 last night The game ended Sorel’s regular season play with 10 wins and 14 losses.Drummondville has one game left This will be played tonight against the Caugh-aawaga Indians. The Indians will be in Sherbrooke tomorrow evening to meet the Olympics. If Sherbrooke wins tomorrow night then they will end their season tied in second place with the Braves.Drummondville, mathematically, won the league championship two weeks ago.Sherbrooke’s Terry Burgess has a comfortable 12 goal lead on Jean - Paul Tellier, Drum mondville’s goaltender, in the race for the best netminder award which Tellier won last year.Burgess has been scored upon 190 times while Tellier has been tallied against 202 times.Again last night Burgess was by far the No.I star of the game.At the 17 - minute mark of the first period Burgess made a phenomenal save on Valley- field’s Mike Collins.Local Olympics’ supporters applauded Burgess for at least a half a minute on this occasion and while cheering on the Sherbrooke netminder, the Olympics scored their seventh goal of first period.Pandemonium followed as the fans roared at what they hoped to see all season. The Olympics, knowing how important a victory was, struck hard and often. At 5:51 of the first period D.Dagenais, unassisted, began what was to be a long hard night for Dugas, the Braves’ netminder.Less than two minutes later Denis Dagenais tallied again on a pass from Andre Despard.Carpenter put the Olympics ahead 3-0 .n a pass from Despard and 27 seconds later, at the 13:57 mark, Johnny Hansen scored, assisted by Jean Paul Groulx.Ronnie Thomson and Richard Dagenais scored on passes from Reni Fleury and D.Dagenais to round out first period scoring, Sherbrooke added five more goals in the second while the Braves managed to put two by Burgess.Olympics' scorers in the second were Hein, Fleury, R.Dagenais, Hansen and Thomson.Goal - getters for Valleyfield were Martin from Donahue and F.Benedict from Martin.Assisting on the Olympics tallies were Despard, Thomson, D.Dagenais, Carpenter and Groulx.McLain wins 22nd, Tigers edge Twins, Orioles win Sherbrooke scored three more in the third while Valleyfield equalled their second period output. For Sherbrooke it was D.Dagenais, unassisted, Jean Franche, unassisted, and Fleury from Thomson.Goals by Donahue, unassisted, and Paquette rounded out the Braves scoring.Offensively Denis Dagenais had the hattrick and a pair of assists for a five-point evening.Andre Despard had a goal and three assists while Captain Johnny Hansen, Richard Dagenais, Ronnie Thomson and Remi Fleury each scored twice. In Tuesday night’s game R.Dagenais, Andre Despard and Jean Franche cannot play.On the day the game was postponed all three players were under suspension by the Olympics’ management for leaving the team to return home to Ottawa. The Olympics will attempt to re-enlist the services of Pierre Lepine and Robert Dagenais. One other ex - Olympic, whose name has been released, will also be asked to rejoin the team for the game.In other Olympics’ news, Guy Hubert and Marc Brunet appear to be out for the remainder of the season because of leg injuries.Brunet was taken to hospital last night for X-rays to see if he suffered a fracture while Hubert has severely pulled muscles. In Brunet’s case doctors do not think the leg is fractured.BASEBALL SUNDAY, AUGUST 4, 4-3 yesterday afternoon.Quebec whipped the Braves 14-5 Saturday evening in Plessisville while the Royals and the Cards split a pair last night. On July 18, a game between the Cards and the Braves was called in the ninth inning in Drummondville because of rain.At this point Granby was leading the Royals 9-6.With men on second and third and two away, Soto was at bat.Soto struckout last night to give the Cards an easy 9-6 win.In the scheduled tilt which followed Norm Angelin! shutout the Cards 2-0.Tonight in Provincial League play Sherbrooke travels to Quebec for a twinbill with the Indians. The Royals will meet the Miners in Thetford.Jose Herrara went all the way for the Miners last night, giving up two runs on three hits, four walks and striking out three.Herrara faced a total of 33 Alouettes in the game, with only six reaching second base. For Williams, Sherbrooke’s starting pitcher, the loss brought his record to 2-2 on the season.Williams, who beat Thetford 8-4 last Tuesday night in Sherbrooke, gave up five runs, three of which were earned on 13 hits. The southpaw walked three and struckout five.Tonight in Quebec, Coach Testa will probably go with Chaviano and his 22nd game Sunday, beating Minnesota Twins 2-1 and staying on scheduled for his date with the record book.McLain, 22-3, figures to get 13 or 14 more starts and needs eight victories to become the first 30-game winner since Dizzy Dean did it in 1934.His pace has kept Detroit on top of the American League and could pay off in the club's first pennant in 23 years. It looked like the Tigers would end that long dry spell last year until McLain's foot fell asleep and he dislocated some toes with two weeks left in the season. The injury also dislocated the Tiger pennant dream and Boston walked off with the flag. Now McLain, his foot awake and his arm alive, has the Tigers out in front again.SENATORS FALL Elsewhere Sunday, Chicago White Sox battered Washington Senators 7-2, Baltimore Orioles dumped New York Yankees 5 3, Boston Red Sox beat California Angels 5-1 in the completion of a suspended game and then the Angels walloped the Red Sox 126, and Oakland split with Cleveland, winning the first game 5-0 and dropping the nightcap 7-4.Saturday scores were: Oakland 1 Cleveland 4: Detroit 0 Minnesota 4: California 3-3 Boston 8-5; Washington 3-2 Chicago 1-6; New York 3 Baltimore 1.McLain scattered five hits and had the Twins shut out until the eighth when an error by A1 Kaline, playing first base, set up an unearned run.The victory kept Detroit six games up on Baltimore. The Orioles won a wild one at New York with the winning run scoring on a disputed play at home plate.Mark Belanger, who had opened the seventh inning with a single and worked his way to third on an error and a messed-up pickoff play, scored the run on Dave Johnson's bouncer to short. The Yankees argued on the call and while they did, Frank Robinson tried to slide in with another run.But the umpires had called time and the Orioles argued on that decision.Manager Ralph Houk of New York and Earl Weaver of Baltimore were both jawing with the umpires at the same time.LITTLE LEAGUE FRIDAY'S GAAAES Yankees favorite going into the final day of the four-day national small-bore rifle competition at Connaught Ranges today.Moon scored 585 out of 600 with 23 bull’s-eyes out of 60 rounds in the standing 50-yard sporting rifle shoot Sunday. That event is considered by most officials as a good indicator of the eventual winner. His nearest rival is Alphonse Mayer, 40-year-old gun shop owner from Kitchener, Ont., with 575 and 26 bull’s-eyes.Saturday, Edson Warner, of Lennoxville, Que., came from behind to outpoint Mayer and win the gold medal for match rifle shooting.Warner, a 36-year-old accountant, trailed Mayer by two points going into the final four events in the two-day competition.PERFECT SCORE TWICE A veteran shooter, he drilled two perfect 400 scores in two 50-yard events, bringing him within one point of Mayer who had a 400 in the first but dropped to 399 in the second.Warner cemented his lead on the final two 100-yard events to capture the gold with a total score of 3.180 out of 3.200.Mayer had 3,178 Both men said a fickle northerly wind gusting to 20 miles an hour made accurate shooting difficult."But I just didn't make many mistakes," Warner said.Bev Pinney, a 36-year-old car- penter from Websters Corners, B.C., finished third with a 3,172 total. The first two days of the small-bore meet are given to match rifle events.Sporting rifle shoots take up the last two days.Sporting rifles are standard hunting gear while match rifles are more specialized, weighing up to 16 pounds—twice sporting rifle weight.Shooters are permitted to use slings and sometimes telescopic sights on match rifles, both of which are taboo on sporting rifles.» ' A'v .' ^ .• •* .y ;«r: * ' ONE STEP MORE — Granby Cardinals' starling pitcher, Marcel
