When Horace Heidt sent his talent scout to Baltimore during the first part of 1948, Grosso applied for an audition. The talent scout was so impressed with the young imitator’s ability that he recommended Jimmy to Horace Heidt for a special try-out.A few days later the noted bandleader signed Grosso to a long-term contract and assigned him to the first unit of new stars that he organized.A hard worker, Grosso spends most of his spare time practising.“Practice is the most important thing in this line of work. It’s very easy to become stale,’’ the entertainer says.Although he has no plans for the immediate future Grosso even- ^ tually plans to return to night club | entertaining and open up his own | cabaret.Recently he received rave | notices after a guest star appearance on KSD-TV in St.Louis.| ! less costly than gold and silver; and still we continue to make nightly entrance into the realms of slumber and the temperance orators assure us that the membership of their various orjanleations does not breath of life on this planet. But if the exhibitions of the present day lack such costly trapings as the ones of which mention has been made we can triumphantly announce that King Ahasuerus never was charmed by the soul-stirring strains of the juke box or the mechanical piano nor did he revel in the glories of Coney Island “red hots,” nor shoot the chutes, ride on the scenic railway, yelp in the house of laughter, bounce on the bouncer, nor do any one of a hundred things in which the visitor to a modern exhibition can joyfully participate. It is just ten years now since the great New York World’s Fair opened. It will likely be many years before anything approaching that great exposition is held again. In fact it may well be that no such venture will again be made in our day.As it was, that fair lost a great deal of money and many of the visitors attending expressed disappointment at not seeing something even better. It’s a tremendous job to attempt to satisfy those people who are made up of you and me today. For months past directors have been fine-combing the continent for attractions that will please. It isn’t easy even today — four years after the war — to get grand stand acts, horse races, midway attractions, agricultural livestock and domestic exhibits. But to miss the Fair would be like dropping 1940 right out of your life. It’s a must for every man, woman and child in this vast and prosperous trading area. It’s not expected that this year's fair will charge the style of the clothes you’ll wear or the shape of the houses you’ll live in.But it will show you what is new in farm machinery and motor cars.It will add new words to your language— and it will give you new things to talk about, new ideas to develop.Jitterbugging on a dance floor is hazardous enough for most of us, but Benny and Betty Fox, seen above, do their dancing on a miniature platform 125 feet in the air. This breath-taking aerial act is part of the grandstand show coming to the Sherbrooke Fair August 27 to Sept.2.Canine Bricklayers To miss it would be to cut yourself off from one of the most significant! happenings of the year—and inci-1 dentally you’d miss having a wonderful time. The Midway will be the centre of ! the big show and the fair grounds i will be divided into several princi-1 pie zones, each zone covering a1 principal phase of a modern exhi- j bition. There wül be the agricul-1 tural zone where the barns and show ring are located; the indus-; trial ball; the grand stand; the; domestic exhibits; the farm machinery section and the amusement zone. This development of j various zones will permit people with special interests to concen- i trate their sightseeing within a1 given district each part of the day.All these zones will have theme centres or focal exhibits of their own.More than in any fair in the past, the exhibits and displays of j this year’s fair will be active and ! dynamic. You will see the finest livestock ever raised. The whole ' fair is educational, if you like—but its education presented in a new, thrilling, vivid manner, with exhibits as new and different as the years in which we live. The meeting opened with the recital of ihe "Women's Cree’." The roll call was answered by eleven members. There were three visitors present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. In the correspondence period literature was distributed to members. The subject of the meeting was "The Rights of Married Women in the Civil and Political Life of the Province of Quebec.” Mrs.E.Ingalls thanked each one who remembered her with card* while she was in the hospital.A box will be packed for England shortly.| Plans were made for a food sale to take place on Saturday.August 27.at throe o’clock at R.R.St.Francois’ store. The surprise package, a pyrex bowl, was won by Mrs.P.Teasdale.The proceeds are for the special fund.A "School Fair" is to take place shortly. After the regular business, the meeting was adjourned and delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses and a j social hour was enjoyed by all.Mr.Nickolas Bleser has entered the Queen Mary Road Hospital, in Montreal, for observation.Mrs.G.Righton is spending a vacation in Burlington, Vt.Mr.and Mrs.Walter Lagrange and son, David, of Philadelphia, Pa., were guests of M \\ and Mrs.David Staines.^ Mr.and Mrs.J.C.Orepeau, of Granby, were guests of Mr.and Mrs.\\V.H.McGrath and family.Miss Fernande, Fregeault, of Cowansville, is spending two weeks with her sister, Mrs.William Dorsch, and family.A food sale will take place on Saturday, August 27, at R.R.St.Francois’ store, sponsored by the Abercorn Women's Iiu.ltute.Mr.and Mrs.J.Paul Daigneault and daughter, Martha, spent a ^ew days in Montreal.Mrs.D.Staines was a visitor in Montreal.Mrs.Ada Norris and children have moved to Montreal.Warden one evening to attend a pusiness meeting.Mr.and Mrs.Garfield Jerry and Mr.Truman Jerry also Mrs.G.Brown, of West Chaay, N.V., were guests of Mr.and Mrs.Stanley Moore for a few days. They also called on Mr.and Mrs.!.A.Booth, while here.Mrs.Brown is remaining with her daughter, Mrs.Moore, and Mr.Moore, for two or threa week*.Other visitors at the Moore’s were Mr.and Mrs.Joseph , Mills, Mr.and Mrs, Roy Fleck, Mrs.Ernest Fleck and daughters, Margaret and Betty, also Mr.and Mrs.L.A.Booth and Mr.Roland , Booth.Mr.and Mrs.F.Fa Doyle and Mr.Winston Doyle, of Ktrkdale, visited Mr.and Mrs.Clifford Taber and Mr.and Mrs.George Barrington.Miss Elaine Barrington and Mr.Ernest Barrington have returned from a ten days’ vacation spent with relatives in Addison, Ont.They also visted other points ineluding Brockville, Smith's Falls and Ottaw'a.reetings to the Officials, Directors and Members of the EASTERN TOWNSHIPS AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION on the Occasion of Their Great Sixty - Fourth -Annual EXHIBITION MELBOURNE RIDGE ABERCORN The monthly meeting of the Abercorn Womet’s Institute met on August 4, at the home of Mrs.G.Godue, with Mrs.Godue and Mrs.‘ G.Righton the joint hostesses.Among those attending the 50th wedding anniversary eolebation of Mr.and Mrs.Arthur Crack at their home in Granby on August.9, were Mr.and Mrs.0.A.Fowler, Mr.H.W.Fowler, Mr.and Mrs.Henry Fowler, the Misses Gweneth and Shirley Fowler, Mr.and Mrs.L.Driver; and Mr.and Mrs.Elmer Crack, Mr.and Mrs.Gordon Crack and Mr.Robert Crack, of Kingsbury.Mr.D.Stevens, Mr.E.Taber and Mr.G.Barrington were in UNION SCREEN PLATE COMPANY OF CANADA LIMITED Lt/V H OXV/Uf QUEBEC OVER 70 YEARS IN BUSINESS Congratulations to the Directors of the SHERBROOKE FAIR Leonard Gauthier s sensational canine act is one of the features of the grandstand revue at the Sherbrooke Fair, August 27-Sept.2.His well-trained dogs actually can lay bricks and when, to cool off, they enter the bar—well, the best thing to do is come and see for yourself what happens.Sherbrooke’s 64th Annual Exhibition!
