Second, I must face this question as a reader and so must you.If you or I can truthfully say that wre have never read a little more avidly when we came to a racy part of a book; if we can honestly say that we have refused to read or discuss (because by discussion we subtly advertise and promote) the latest FEV-TON PLACE or LADY CHAT-TFRLEY then we hear no responsibility. But how many, save the unlettered, can say this?I agree that the American -and the Canadian novel • is being.at times, denatured - even degraded.I agree that it is being exploited • but I den t think the situation is so simple we can solve it by laying it all at the door of the publishers. At the base of this, and every ill - be it social, cultural or political -lies the frailty of man himself.Historv as revealed In /sa /sa » • ZSA ZSA GABOR by Gerold Frank — Nelson.Foster & Scott, Ltd.-.308 page»—— — $4.75 — History records that kemal Ataturk, founder and first president of the t ».Turkish republic, died at ‘ Nevertheless, right up until the end.he lived the hard-drinking life of a playboy, and enjoyed a romantic dalliance with Zsa Zsa Gabor, then approximately 18 years old — that’s what this book says, anyway. There's another huherto hidden piece of history in the volume, tpo.Zsa Zsa and her husband (the first of three, to date) are dining sedately with George Bernard Shaw and H.G.Wells, .Zsa Zsa's napkin slips to the floor.Shaw and Wells bend gallantly to retrieve it.One of them, it is claimed, pinches Zsa Zsa’s leg before straightening up."1 like to thing it was Mr.Shaw,’’ Zsa Zsa is quoted b., her biographer as saying. This is another of those books that an American news magazine has aptly dubbed a “non-book.'' Put together by a man who spécialités in writing the first person stories of well-known people, it purports to be the life-story of Miss Gabor. It runs along smoothly enough, from Zsa Zsa's first affair in a Swiss chalet at approximately 16 years of age to the present time, running through the trio of husbands and a number of other attachments that didn't quite reach the same status. To give Mr.Frank his due, the book often catches the same glamorous, gay, childlike Zsa Zsa that the public sees on television and in the movies, but there are many other parts where he has obviously worked hard to bring a bit of balanced reason to the whole mad whirl M Y «if m 11 miMHiHM I S'T O R Y il TT E N' f 0%) Ml BY GEROLD FRANK that is apparently Zsa Zsa’s life.Readers who find the massue name-dropping and flitting from man to man a bit tiresome (and it's difficult not to can amuse themselves by figuring out Z»a Zsa's ago.All they have to go on is the dateless fact of her birth, admitted to in the opening paragraph. But there is enough in formation in the rest of the book to do the jot).It works out to about 40, give or take a year or two.And at that age.Miss Gabor should know better! Ill (ill DOHERTY Novel ‘de-natured’ for sake of sales A BALLAD OF LOVE by Fredric Prokosch, 311 pages.FARRAR, STRAUS AND CUDAHY .$4.95 — Elsewhere on this page I have written about the “denatured novel.” At the time 1 wrote those words I was at a loss to recall a book that might be held up as an example of a denatured novel.Since reading A BALLAD OF LOVE, I am no longer at such a loss.Surely A BALLAD OF LOVE is a de-natured novel.I can’t believe that such a book is the norm for a novel even» of the atomic age.The late Albert Camus said that Frederic Prokosch had invented the “geographic novel.” That may well be, certainly his amoral, immoral, profligate characters covered a good deal of territory in their eternal search for what in the final analysis seemed to be a bedmate. However, I strongly suspect that Mr.Prokosch moved them from country to coun- try and continent to contin ent wdth little more in mind that getting his novel published in each of these places—a novel de-natured for the sake of sales. While books like LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER are getting reams of criticism—and not undeserved although 1 would criticize it more for the boredom of most of its w'ordage than for its few obscene passages— there are hosts of fringe books, not evil enough for headlines but evil enough, which are slipping on to book shelves behind the smoke screen of Lady Chatterley s criticism.Frankly I think there is far more harm being done by these fringe books—which are escaping notice—than by those that are being roundly condemned.Convicted in the mind of the reader before it is read, Lady Chatterley probably affects the average reader about as much as a rootin’ shootin’ T V.Western affects a child jaded by a surfeit of them. But a book like A BALLAD OF LOVE read with no advance warning of its decadence could easily dull the youthful perception to the nuances of right and wrong. This book has a cast of thoroughly useless and dis gusting characters. The scenes are laid in a completely unreal and revolting world. It seems to me that Mr.Pro-koseh insults the intelligence of the.reader by' picturing such an improbable world and insults the reader's emotions by using the word love in juxtaposition to such ani mal reactions as his charac ters display.THE BALLAD OF LOVF has one saving grace.Mr Prokosch writes superbly The splendid flow of his sen fences, his starkly descriptive phrases and flawlessly uncluttered paragraphs are * From Caesar to Arthur FROM t'AFSAR TO Ut THl R b' Geoffre» VOie — 320 pgs — \\Vm.Collins A Sons, Ltd — St.50 — In this book the author patiently unravels a tangle of Welsh, Cel tie and Irish folk lore, poetry and ecelesias-ical records, to throw some light on the dim period in British history between the withdrawal of iho Romans and the Norman conquest. He reveals that the traditional, schoolbook view of that era as an anarchic age of barbarian conquest, leaving no written records of im portance and in which few events occurred worth re cording, is a false one.A difficulty has been to under stand ihe imaginative imagery of those who have left re cords and also, according to ihe author, a rather surprising lack of archaeological in vestigation of suitable sites in Britain.Slowly and carefully the author examines all sources of information in a sort of literary detective work.He points out evidence of the fact that during the gradual dis integration of the WesU-ri Roman Empire, there were times when Britain was virtually the sole remaining stronghold of Christianity in ihe West and that this was Ihe only former Roman col ony that was never complete !y overrun, or which never lost its identity.Angles, Jutes, Saxons and later, Danes came in conquering waves, were beaten back and came on again, but never obliterated the remnants of Christian Roman - British civilization that they found. The Art bur who became the legendary “king” of the R o u n d Table, gradually emerges as Ihe central char acter of Ihe book, but a rather different figure from the one built up by laler poets and ballad singers. He was the most successful lead er of Ihe Britons in their fight for survival and the author gradually builds up a picture of him as a man, not of royal birth and probably never regarded as a king during his lifetime, but a bold and successful general, with some very human faults. This is not a book that will have wide popular ap peal, but to anyone interested in this subject, it should prove fascinating.DREW GIBB a sheer delight to read.It seems such a ghastly waste that he should use his talent to portray such shoddy places, sluttish characters and perversions of emotion.«.GLADYS TAYLOR / / ê- -iMr.'-.’-L?: •'ilMfVi .Off-Hriuuhi'ay Canadian is hailed bv critics m NEW YORK ,Gt' One o' the b e succès - s oi es of the New York *tage this
