the end, the Democrats may be forced to draft kindly Adlai E.Stevenson who twice suffered stinging defeats at the hands of President Eisenhower in the 1952 and 1956 election fights. The 59-year-old Stevenson who swept to post-war political fame by winning the Illinois governorship in 1948—a rare thing for a Democrat in that Republican stronghold—says he’s washed his hands of any the problem of the world's starving millions.Nuclear disarmament has, of course, been proposed by both the United Stales and Russia, and by other powers.Mr.Stevenson's plan for aid to the underdeveloped would lake up where (he Marshall Plan left off, but has much wider implications. It would not be purely American project.I he scope envisaged by Mr.Stevenson is too big for even that cornu-copi.It would involve all the resources of the free world; the creation, in Mr, Stevenson s words, of new .supra-national patterns and institutions of coopera- tion.I he world would have to co-ordinate, Mr.Stevenson said, "all aspect# of the effort with other nations - not only investment, but opportunities for trade, international liquidity and so forth '' Mr.Stevenson is getting very close to the ideal of a world federation, advanced by many sociological theorists. But what he proposes is no theory; it is an emminently practical plan that could and should be put into operation.Any who many doubt this have only to reflect back to the days of World War II wh en, within a few short years, the forces arrayed against Hitler, through all-out material aid cooperation and coordination of resources, built themselves up from virtually nothing. What is needed now is the same unifying spirit fTiat pervaded that opera lion, but it must be a spirit this time of peace, I his is the most difficult aspect of Mr.Stevenson's proposals.Just how difficult it is may be symbolized by the presence of President Eisenhower in Trance trying to bolster NAIO’s military strength at almost (he same time that Mr.Stevenson s plan for world harmony is being read on this side of the ocean. It will not do to wait until the free world is menaced again by the threat of being wiped off the face of the earth to develop ihis unity.By then, this time, it will probably be too late.P ¥ MCA Carvira Ue Saturday's Sermon The Window Of Hope By REV.B, S.MURR/Y, M.A.Deliberate Overplanting Although corn production in Canada plays a comparatively minor part in the agricultural economy — the average crop running about I 2,000,()()() bushels — it is one of the major products for the farmer of the mid-western United States.Ibis year the United States corn crop will be the largest in history. To carry out its pledge to purchase corn at the new support price of $1.12 a bushel the U.S.government may have to buy 500,000,-000 bushels.Under the former program farmers figured they would make more money if they passed up the higher support prices which went hand-in-hand with restricted acreage, and overplanted their quotas, and settled, instead, for a guaranteed lower figure of $1.06 a bushel- I he new program provides for fixing prices al 90 per cent of the average market price for the last three years, which provides the $1.12 figure. But whether it is old program, new program, high parity, low parity, it all boils down to the same thing. As long as a government support program tempts farmers to overplant, to add to the already great surplus of marketable farm commodities, they will do it.I he problems involved in the situation are two -fold.One is to find storage for the extra 500,000,000 bushels when the present facilities are literally bulging. The second is to lind $5 60,000,000 with which to pay the producers. This, however, is comparatively simple — squeeze the tax payers again.I consider myself fortunate | panying challenge here and now that my bedroom window has an ; Affairs Minister Green have both spoken publicly on these matters recently and they did not risk any specific prophecies. They expressed a hope that these European developments would improve and regularize trade relations and not operate against Canadian exports, It may be a pious hope. But it would seem likely that these countries will still need what they have been buying from Canada. They have not been buying because they love us but because we have what they want.WINCH'S WARNING So it might be a reasonable hope that there will not be any great setback to Canadian export operations.Unless Harold Winch has discovered something really dangerous- He is 52 years old, a native of England, a socialist, a founding father of the CCF and an adopted son of British Columbia. He has been a member of the House of Commons since 1953 and while he has not set the place on fire he is a man most members listen to with respect. He has just returned from a long trip through Southeast Asia to Australia and intermediate points. In broadcasts and public speeches and private conversation Harold Winch has been telling the Canadian people that they are in danger of losing their markets abroad and for a reason no one would ever expect from a socialist.Strikes in Canadian productive works had earned Canada, particularly British Columbia, a bad name abroad, he warned. It was not only that higher wages and increased production costs operated against the Canadian exporter but customers were afraid of strikes causing interruptions in deliveries. He warned bluntly, and admitted that he probably would be hated by his confreres in the party, that in some areas those striking for more wages would find themselves jobless because foreign markets would turn away from Canada.GIFTS MOST WELCOME ARE GIFTS ELECTRICAL HOOVIR SHAM ISON 23.43 1 SUNMAM _ DHUXI MIXMAITIK WITH JUICI* #1.43 KONSON CFl ELECTRIC SHAVER 21.SO Give ELECTRIC' lUUAlT ELECTRIC BLANKET 41U-3INOIE CONTROL 2 It' 35.45 14 45 ta WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC KITTLE Madtl K32 14.43 SUNBEAM T33 RADIANT CONTROL TOASTER 34 75 HOOVER DELUXE FLOOR POLISHER WITH LAMBSWOOL POLISHING RADS S4.43 There is so much long and good use in an electrical gift.Use this page to help make up your gift list—and be sure to put your name on it for a few electrical gifts too.FOR MODERN ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES SEE YOUR FAVOURITE DEALER Ot Southern Canada Power Wf GUARANTEE AND SERVICE EVERYTHING WE SELL 5920 I J THE AMERICAN Continued from P«se 3 though the 48-year-old Humphrey already has declared himself m the prewdential race, veteran ob-servers don't consider him a strong candidate mainly because of his extreme liberal views.Ont of the South comes Senator Lyndon B.Johnson of Texas, a tall, hefty 5t-year-old political veteran who raised some dust inside the party duriAg his majority leadership of the Senate. He suffered a heart attack a few years ago, raising a question of whether he has sufficient physical strength to withstand the rigors of the White House.Amid the bickering and without the weakness of religious minority affiliation stands Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri, a tall, ramrod individual who a few years ago had to undergo medical care for hypertension. Some Democrats see in him the ‘'compromise'1 candidate, perhaps acceptable both to northern and southern member».Symington, after some youthful escapades, later became head of a big electrical mamifarutmg company and first secretary for air in the former Truman administration.EPISCOPALIAN What’s more, he's an Episcopalian and the record shows that more Episcopalians were elected president than any other religious affiliation.Symington is a great champion of military defence and air power but there is ro evidence that his national popularity compares wit that of the youthful Kennedy or even Stevenson.Kitchener's Worst Blaze Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year TO ALL Sincere thanks to all our customers who have patron-ixed us in the past yaar, and hope to have the pleasure of serving you in 1960.Jean-Paul Savard, B.Ph., L.Ph., prop, of Pharmacy Savard.PHARMACY SAVARD Extra Rapid Delivery 91 King St W.—Tel.LO.9-3675 - (next to J.A.Savard, Ltee.) The most vital and by far the most important trademark of an accurate backswing is the position of the stone on the ice at the commencement of the delivery.Old curlers and new should remind themselves to check this salient point before playing any shot because it represents the crux on which success or failure of accurate broom play hinges.Because a curling stone with handle weighs approximately 42 pounds the backswing takes the form of a pendulum with the rock hanging from the fingers as it makes the arc from the ice to the top of the swing. If this arc is not in line with the skip’s broom, the odds are that the shot will be wide or narrow depending on whether the backswing is started inside or outside this long imaginary line.Take a gander at our illustration for a moment and try to visualize where the proper line of direction bisects the rock in the player’s hand. Before you read further try to answer these questions: (1) What turn is called for?(2) Approximately where is the skip’s broom located at the other end of the sheet? You are right—it is an out-turn and calls for five or six feet of ice.The broom target would be between the eight- and twelve-foot circles.Imagine your right hand is showing in the photograph.Pull the stone into the correct position for (1) a centre ice shot, (2) two feet of ice for an in-turn, (3) six feet of broom for a wide in-turn.In the first instance the rock would be pulled to your left so that it bisected the cen- tre line, then still further to the left so that it bisected the centre line, then still further to the left for numbers 2 and 3.Next time, whether you are consistently or occasionally wide or narrow, try this for size and the more important the shot the greater necessity to check this position before you start your backswing. If the ice is swinging concentrate on being a little wide of the broom and adjust your stone accordingly. If there arc runs or fall back allows for a “thin” broom.Should you enjoy the hallowed rank as a skip, watch your players for inside-out and outside-in deliveries and broom them to offset these irregularities.Better still, have a practice session with them for corrective reasons and don’t be afraid to check your own weaknesses.Next: Starting the Backswing.Dates And Times Released For Bowl Games, Open Dec.19 With Three Tilts /f= Tropica!
