THE CROWN LAUNDRY of Sherbrooke Ltd.Tel.LO.9-2585 Dr.Gerard Of Wolfe By CUTHBERT JONES WEEDON — (Special) — Dr.Gerard Lemieux, Wee-don physician, who ha« represented Wolfe County in the Quebec Legislative Assembly for the past four years, was the unanimous choice of a Liberal convention here last evening as party standard-bearer in the June 20 provincial general elections. His was the only name to come before the joint gathering of Liberal and Social Credit supporters which packed the Tardif theatre and it was obvious that the delegates felt the convention was only a formality to provide an opportunity for an outflow of political wisdom. Those who had come for an evening of oratory were not disappointed, for the speech-making which got underway shortly after 8.30 did not wind up until nearly midnight. The main addresses w-ere delivered by Rene Hamel, M.P.P., for St.Ma urice and chief Liberal organizer for the Quebec district, and Emilien Lafrance, M.P.P.for Richmond, each of whom held the floor for over an hour.* Brief addresses were also delivered by the candidate, who thanked the delegates for the confidence displayed in him, and fey Ernest O.Gingras, M.P., for Richmond-Wolfe, who promised that he and the other Liberal Members of Parliament for Quebec province would give their full support to the provincial Liberal forces. In his acceptance address.Dr.Lemieux explained that because oï the destruction of his resid- : ence by fire several months ago 1 and a serious illness he had un- | dergone last fall, he had considered seriously the abandonment of the Quebec political field.‘¦But.be continued, such pressure had been applied upon him by electors from all parts of the county that he had decided to Lemieux County Li Unanimous Choice beral supporters were playing politics with such matters as old age and invalid pensions, aid to colonists and assistance to farmers. These practises, he said, had made agriculture one of Quebec's depressed industries. In 1943 the average value of farm land in Quebec was $7 per acre higher than in Ontario, but in 1955, Ontario acreage was an average of $21 higher than that of Quebec.‘‘Which means,'’ he said, “that the value of a Quebec farm of 100 acres has suffered a relative decline of $2,800 since the Union Nationale party took office.’’ He also criticized the failure of the Duplessis government to take action to assure the colonists an adequate price for their pulpwood, claiming that the farmers were being victimized so that jobber friends of the Government could enrich themselves.Mr.Lafrance delighted his audience with a semi-humorous explanation of the events which had given him a unique reputation among legislators of the Commonwealth and of the United States as the only man who had been expelled from the House three times in a session. These expulsions, he said, were due solely to the vindictiveness of the Prime Minister The Richmond member also had a word of warning to provincial civil servants who engaged actively in politics, “Those loyal workers who do their duty and mind their own business need have nothing to fear from a change of government,” declared Mr.Lafrance, “as this is a democracy and a man or woman has the right to think and vote as he or she likes. But those who neglect their duties to act as organizers for the Union Nationale campaign will surely get the axe as soon as the Liberals come into power.” The Government claims that it was giving social justice to the people of Quebec were criticized by Mr.Hamel, who maintained that such payments as old age Wolfe Liberals Meet - ^'wo^lT; Liberal candidate at a convention at Weedon last evening, in the upper photo, is receiving a promise jute will cover both side walls and the rear walls, starting eight feet from the floor. The part which remains uncovered will be finished in beaverboard and the auditorium will be practically unrecognizable Another step which has been taken to improve the acoustics deals with the ceiling.Steel wires have been stretched across the ceiling to help relay the sound to the audience Since no microphones will be' allowed during the finals complete silence will have to reign during the plays in order to allow the adjudicator.Mme F: i-coise Kosay.a chance to hear .ul understand what is being said on stage. Before each play, lickets will be on sale in the lobby of the auditorium, which will ho spo cially decorated for the occasion.Tickets may now be obtained at the New Sherbrooke Hotel and Rights Improved The civil rights of married women in the Province of Quebec were explained to a large gathering of the Women’s Canadian Club last night by the Hon.Mr.Justice Andre Taschereau, LLD, DCL, Judge of the Superior Court, District of Quebec.During his address.Judge Taschereau pointed out the advances made in the interest of women, saying that “widows and spinsters” for nearly all purposes now arc on the same footing as men, but that married women are treated in a somewhat different light.Summarizing the legal status1 of women in the Mediterranean countries.Great Britain, the United States and France, he said that not only in North America, but in most countries of Europe, “the general tendency is to place the wife on a footing of complete equality with men.” “The civil rights of women in the Province of Quebec,” he said, “are determined by the Civil Code, dating back to 1866 This was modelled on the Napoleonic Code then existing 1929.” Judge Taschereau said that un- : der the British North America ! Act, marriage and divorce come J within the federal field of legis- j lation while the solemnization of 1 marriage belongs to the provin- j cial jurisdiction.“In some instances, the distinction between the two may be j very fine, but though the validity of marriage is covered by j both the provincial and federal authorities, solemnization conditions may affect the validity of j contract and therefore provinces ; may, when dealing with the solemnization.declare any violation and render the marriage null and void.” He stated that there are still many articles in the Civil Code concerning marriage itself as dis- ; tinct from the solemnization of marriage.“It is because these articles were enacted before the : BN A Act of 1867 that t hey are valid legislation until they are | repealed by an Act of Parlia- j ment of Canada.” Judge Tasphereau continued to discuss the rights and obligations of husband and wife, but explained that they depended upon the regimd! under which the couple had been married. The three regimes of marriage, he said, were legal community of property, conventional community of property and separation of property."Until the amendments of 1931, a husband alone could administer his property without ! the agreement of his wife. Now, j however, he needs the concur-1 rence of his wife to dispose of the property of the community, except for the establishment of their common children.” He explained lhat before 1931 a married woman could not appear in judicial proceedings with out her husband or his authorization, except in matters of simple administration “Now under the law as it is to day.a woman, separate as to property, has full civil capacity to act without the necessity of marital or judicial authorization and has the entire administration of her property moveable and immovable, the free enjoyment of her revenues, and the right to alienate without authorization her moveable property. She can not, however, without authorization, alienate her immovables or accept a gift of immovables.” A woman today also may claim soie rights to the proceeds of her personal work, explained the judge.Reviewing the obligations of the parties towards each other.Judge Taschereau said that while a wife swears obedience to her husband, if a husband today tried to enforce it, he would be.come the laughing stock of the town. The obligation of the husband to protect his wife has become obsolete as well, for wives have, shown that they can take very good care of themselves.” A mutual obligation he described was that of the husband and wife to their children, whom they have promised to maintain and bring up But the father alone is to exercise authority until the child comes of age.“I may say in practice, however,” he commented, ‘‘that this authority is more often exercised by the mother.” The speaker was introduced "SPRED SATIN" PAINT CENTRE SPRM > L," - The most merchandise?Machinery, clothes, or anything else manufactured by Canadians, are as good, if not better than material made in other countries. Some alien articles may seem cheaper, but saving one cent on quantity to lose two cents on quality is poor business. The grass may look green'er on the other side of the fence, but it isn't.In March, our exports decreased to $333,000,000, while our imports shattered all records, rising to $466,-000,000.This means we are boosting the business of strangers and neglecting our own.It is not a question of spending more than we earn, but of spending it in the wrong places.Spending much of this money in Canada would provide more employment and prosperity for Canadians. The greater part of all this money spent outside Canada is centered in the U.S.Canadian deficit in U.S.trade in March was more than, doubled.Americans are our good neighbors and friends. They are a great bunch of people, but Charity begins at home.Support home industry. Now Its A A Toronto
