Canada.Death removed on Saturday morning one of Sherbrooke’s most popular and leading citizens in the person of J.M.Dufresne, local manager of the Banque Nationale.Although never of a robust constitution he was able to attend to his duties until a few days ago when he was stricken down with peritonitis, and despite the fact that the best of medical aid was called in he gradually sank and passed away on Saturday morning at half past six o’clock. The late Mr.Dufresne was only thirty years of age, but during his short career he held many appointments, and was looked upon as one of the rising men in the banking world.J.M.Dufresne was norn at Montmagny, Quebec, on the 6th of September, 1873, and was a son of Mr.J.C.Du- Longtin Freres Have Liabilities ot $50,000.J.S.MITC3 ELL & CO.I — has lot cleared much during the past, week, and the reports then in circulation regarding the standing of difler-ent local concerns, were not, we regret to say, at all exaggerated. The business of Longtin Freres, grocers and wine merchants, has been precipitated into insolvency, with liabilities of about $80,000, and assets possibly of one-fourth this sum ; but the worst feature of the case is the disappearance of Mr.Ariste Longtin, the senior member of the firm, and the allegation that for some time previously he trafficked in doubtful paper to a large amount—some say to the extent of $20,000.The chief creditors of the Longtons are the Banque Nationale and Boivin, Wilson A Co., Montreal ; though, of course, many other creditors will be made to suffer, as the dividend is certain to he trilling.Another concern that has gone up is the Imperial Chemical Co.of St.Johns.This company was started a couple of years ago by the Longtins, and Dr.Sabourin was drawn into it.The company manufactured a stove polish and a menthol balsam and sent its goods far and near at prices and on terms to suit customers.Naturally it collapsed when the first shock came.Their liabilities are not yet publicly known. One or two other firms in St.Johns, who had rather liberal lines of discount at the bank, are also said to be in a pannicky condition, hut it is hoped that they will pass the crisis, and be able in time to meet all their obligations. The Longtins had been in trade here for about five years, and had latterly one of the largest stores in town. They put into the business, we believe, about $10,000, and carried a very heavy stock, but they have carried nothing out of it, and unfortunately the elder member of the firm has not even saved his reputation.Their store and books are now in charge of a representative of Kent A Turcotte, accountants, of Montreal.< V Dcvril irv tHe KitcHen The object of cookery should be to prepare food in the most nutritious, palatable and easily digestible form.BOVRIL is the embodiment of all these qualities and is therefore of paramount importance in the kitchen where a little of it added to soups, gravies, stews, etc., grives relish and real nourishment to even the most tasteless dish.IT WON’T CHOP WOOD, BUT THE THE LATE J.M.DUFRESNE Union With Canada.WILL BE PLATFORM OF NEW PARTY IN NEWFOUNDLAND.A sensation has been created by tl:e entered the University of Toronto for a year, and for the same period at the Metropolitan Business College, Chicago, obtaining high honors at both places. He entered the services of the Banque Nationale at Montreal, and shortly afterwards was appointed to he assistant manager of the Montreal branch, and when the bank was reorganized he was sent to Sherbrooke as manager in December, 1897.He filled his duties here to the entire satisfaction of his directors and clients, and in addition to paying strict attention to his banking duties he also took a great interest in all that pertained to the welfare of the city.He identified himself with the Board of Trade, and after serving a term as vice-president he was the unanimous choice of the members for the presidency last year.He was also president of the Tuqee Rouge Club and a member of several other organizations at the time of his death. When in Montreal he wTas President of Le Montagnard Bicycle Club, secretary of Le Montagnard believes that the bay will offset the Atlantic outlets possessed by the Americans and deprive Uanada of her present almost absolute dependence upon the* I ni ted States for the transportation of semi-monthly.Still in the lead, keeping abreast of the times, and awake to the growing demands of its readers, the publishers now announce that, beginning with the 1st of January, 1901, the Farmers’ efforts are being made at present in our city and district, towards the enlightment of the public regarding the nature of tuberculosis, its cause and prevention, I regret to see prominence given in one of our local papers, to an article, in which the common theory, that dry sputum it is stated that “Dr.Mazyck P.Kavenal emphatically controverted (tubercular) is the cause of tubercular infection.” Who is this Dr.Kavenal ?I have before me a list of all the doctors of any note in the city of Philadelphia, to which city it is claimed this man belongs, but fail to find his name. His views are contrary to common sense and proven facts. His statement that ‘‘there is not a whit of evidence that dry sputum ever caused a single case of tuberculosis in mankind,” ipay cause a feeling of doubt to arise in the minds of some who have been informed that the sputum from a consumptive person is, as a rule the infecting medium. In the minds of educated physicians such a statement evokes a feeling of pity for the individual who would publicly manifest such gross ignorance, or on the other hand a feeling of utter disgust, if it is an attempt on the part of this man to gain notoriety in such a nefarious way.I do not purpose to enter into a The Druggists Are Agreed that the most reliable corn and wart remover is Putnam’s Painless Corn and Wart Extractor, which has been used with universal Medicine, John Hopkins University, Baltimore, says : The virus (tubercle bacillus) is contained in the sputum in enormous amount, which, when dried, is soon widely disseminated in the form of dust, and, unless carefully sterilized, constitutes a medium of infection.” Dr.S.A.Knopf, Physician to the Lung Department of the New York Nose and Throat Hospital, says ; “The most dangerous bacillus inhaled in the dust is the tubercle bacillus, which retains its vitality and virulence in a dried state for months.Countless are the cases reported, which pro\V beyond doubt, that this mode of propagation of the diseasp is the commonest.” Opinions of the same nature could be quoted from the cleverest American, English and European physicians by the scores.Suffice it to say that views such as expressed by this Dr.Ravenal lead us to believe that the author is either antiquated in his learning, or is taking this means to make himself notorious.Thanking you Sir, I am, Yours truly,
