end of the park., ., The Mayor also presented a petition relative to the same request. The petitioners say that these trees were planted by public subscription, ami on that account they claim the removal of the trees should be discontinued.Councillor Olivier said that Mr.Todt, the landscape architect, having examined the park in question gave it as his opinion that the cluster of trees in the west end of park were unsightly and should be removed. The report ot tin architect in question was adoptei by the Council. If everyone was to make objections to what the Park Committee intended doing towards beautifying the parks would hinder the work which they contemplated. The Mayor remarked that portion of the price of the p.aik was paid by public subscription and they naturally thought they hail some say in the matter.Councillor Lanctôt thought tv the park was now in the hands ot the city they should not be hampered in the work of beautifying it, as the Council was only following out the plans laid down by a competent architect. He thought the work should be proceeded with., , It was thought that if the matter was thoroughly explained to the* petitioners that the Committee was only following out a plan laid down by the architect in ouestion they would be satisfied. The petition was referred to the Real Estate and Parks Committee.Mayor Camirand read a letter from* Mr.E\ Sa varie, recording secretary of Court St.Jean.Catholic Oiiler of Foresters, calling attention to the fact that a gentleman named W.II.Simons, who had been injured at the Grand Trunk station, was removed to the Protestant Hospital when he desired to be taken to the Catholic Hospital ami asked that the Council in future see that the wishes ot people similarly situated be respected. The letter was read and ivied as the Council hail nothing to do with such matters.THE SMOKE NUISANCE.Mayor Camirand drew' the attention of the Council to the smoke nuisance in the city.A number or people had complained to him and pointed out that smoke from the ehimnies of the Patou Mills does considerable damage to some people. The w iml carries this smoke dow'ii certain portion^ of the city, and people w ho have clot
