of Yarmou h, arrived in town to day by the telephone from Tusket Wedge.Tugs were at oiîce dtsfatcht d to her assistance. This afternoon Chief Officer McAf-freyand Pursuer Stewart arrived here by team, having landed at Little River in a boat and driven from there to Tus ket Wedge and thence to town. The Castilian left Portland, Me., at 1 p.m.yesterday for Liverpool, with a Cargo consisting of 160,000 bushels of wheat and some three or four thousand tons of general Ontario provisions. She also had 18 horses, 382 head of cattle and 400 sheep. There were 20 cabin passengers, 8 intermediate and 22 steerage.During the night the weather was hazy and they proceeded slowly and cautiously, carefully looking out for buoys and other signs of land.Suddenly breakers wrere seen and at once she struck forward quite gently, the shock not being sufficient to awaken the passengers. It wa:’ 3.40 Sunday morning when she struck. There was no confusion and all orders were obeyed with coolness and promptness. The engines were reversed, but the steamer held fast, swinging around till Gannet Rock itself loomed up astern It was just about low tide when she went on, and when it was found that the engines would not take her off it was decided to wait for daylight and send ashore for assistance. The sea was comparatively smooth. The carpenter reported water in the two forward compartments, and the lioats were all got ready, but there seemed no immediate danger. When the chief officer and purser ar rived at Tuskel Wedge the local agents had tugs sent to the scene as quickly as possible.Capt Barret, master, was promoted add to wreck from the Parisian, aud is commodore of the Allan fleet This was the first voyage of the Castilian, which was 8,800 tons register. She arrived on this side of the Atlantic nine days ago, touching at Halifax and going thence to Portland, where her cargo was loaded.PASSENGERS SAFE.Later — The tugs returned to Yar‘ mouth lare to-night from the scene of the disaster, bringing the fifty passengers who were on board the Castilian.Capt.Barret and his crew remained on the steamer. The Castilian is reported to he lying easy, but that it is probable she cannot be saved from destruction. The ship lies in six fathoms of water, and is badly bulged.Besides the water in the two forward holds, there are six or seven feet in the engine rooms.WILL BE A TOTAL LOSS A late special from Yarmouth says The tugi Wanda and steamer Latour have returned from the wreck with all the passengers and most of the crew of the wrecked steamer.G.W.B.Moody, Lloyd’s agent in Yarmouth, who went down with the tugs, expresses the opinion that the steamer will bo beyond doubt a total wreck PASSENGERS TAKEN OFF.The sea was now so high that the little steamers had the greatest difficulty in getting alongside. The Latour had her rail smashed in the attempt, but finally they got fast to the big steamer and the passengers and their effects and most of the crew were got off.It was after three when the tugs arrived at Gannet Rock and between 5 and six o’clock, before they left the Yar mouth, arriving here at 6 30 o’clock. The passengers are being cared for at the Grand and other hotels and will leave on the D.A.R.train in the morning to take the steamer Vancouver for England.VALUABLE CARGO.Ian Line steamer Castilian, reported ashore near Yarmouth, N.S., sailed from this port at 1p.m.Saturday.The ship itself is valued at about $700,000, and her cargo at $45,000.This is the most valuable cargo that the Allans have ever shipped from Portland.PORTION OF THE CREW STILL ON BOARD.Halifax, N.S., March 13.—(Special) According to advices this forenoon from Y ar mouth, Capt.Birrett and crew were st 1 on board Castilian.Tugs which went to scene of wreck have not yet returned.Bedford Scorched LOSS OVER $20,000.Ai.Bedford, Que., March 13th, (Special)— *ut 5 o’clock this inoriiing tUines were discov»Ked bursting from a three-storey wooden bailing situated in centre SILK FROM COCOONS.For a thousand years the Chinese jealously guarded the secret of reeling silk from cocoons; then the Persians stole it.It was nearly two thousand five hundred years after the secret reckoning mania is almost incurable and that, it* beginnings are so exceedingly slight should make one doubly cautious of contracting it.The patient will count everything, from chimney pots to raindrops, and his mind is always in a ferment of reckoning.Another habit mania, and one a great until contracted—to wit.Dr.Johnson—is the tapping mania. With him it took the form of tapping every post he passed with his walking stick, just as with the great Napoleon the reckoning mania caused him to count the houses in the streets he drove through, two by two.Unfortunately, however, we hay® not all the energy of will and robustness of mind of these two Titans, and the result is that with ordinary mortals the tapping mania is apt to have terrible results. The lengths to which it will carry a man it is positively awful to contemplate.Should it happen that he omits to tap or touch the object as he liasses by it be will return to do so, and he ends by tapping every object of that kind that he sees. The fact that once a man’s mind gets in the habit of dwelling on one idea or lx*-comesobsessed by it he is extremely liable to go mad is illustrated by an extraordinary case that, were it not vouched for on unimpeachable scientific authority, one would reject as Incredible.A well to do retired man of business made a habit of noticing the face and features of almost every woman he came in contrct with to sec if she were pretty or not.So far did this mania go with him that on one occasion, when ho had to take a railway journey from London to Manchester, the fact that he forgot to discover what the Ixindon station barmaid was like so annoyed him that he actually traveled Iwu k to town to discover. This is the clearest case on record of a man going mad from habit. There is a well substantiated case of a man who, imbued with the notion that 13 was an unlucky number, could not keep it out of his calculations.Every thing he saw, everything ho was engaged in, seemed to him to suggest the fatal number until at last melancholia of the most pronounced kind rendered him unfit to be at large. If you have ever visited a lunatic asylum, you will have found at least one lunatic who persists in walking round and round a more or less accurate circle. And if you had been able to trace out the cause of his insanity you would have found out most probably that be went mad originally through his seeing some circular motion and feeling impelled to imitate it.It might have even been that a hum ming top caused him to get up ami run round and round the room or that ho started to do so when playing wdth a little child.Too much waltzing has even been known to produce the same mania in a mild form, and the habit of running, walking or even writing in circles, a form which has an extraordinary attraction for some people, is invariably attended with disastrous results.^ Hut quite the most drttigerous habit—o' mind, that is—and one against which readers of this article should l>c warned is the fear of Insanity, which, strangely enough, frequently induces it.—English Magazine.t The \ Dye É of | Quality The new, clean, quick, brilliant, fadeless hunne dye, “Maypole Soap,” is
