Both sides claim successes Fighting continues in Middle East From AP-RELTER Both sides in the new Middle East war are claiming successes but there is no talk in Israel of a six-day blitz to match their 1967 victory And on the Arab side Syria, at least, also is controlling its optimism A senior Israeli air force officer said Monday that Israel had command of the skies but the Egyptian and Syrian air forces are still basically intact We did not attack and eliminate them on the ground as in the six-day war.he said in a television interview Another interviewed Israeli officer, fighting on the Suez Canal front against Egypt, praised the ferocity and discipline of the Egyptian attack and said he was encountering weapons and tactics he hadn t seen before On the Golan Heights front the responsibility of Syria in the Arabs two-pronged attack there were no victory claims from the Syrian side, an indication that Israel s claims of advances there were accurate Damascus Radio has issued no new communiques since before noon Monday, merely repeating earlier information Israel reported by Monday afternoon that the Syrian troops and armor were fleeing in disarray toward Damascus, but later admitted there were stubborn pockets of resistance Israeli chief of staff Gen David Elazar asked if Israeli troops intended to move on Damascus, replied The troops are moving from •Ipf ATTACKS LABOR LEADERS - Premier Robert Bourassa reserved special attention for Quebec's labor leaders, attacking Yvan Charbonneau during a speech in Magog Saturday.See story P 3.our territory against the other side We shall see in the next few days the direction and the results Israel's top military analyst and former military intelligence chief.Gen Chaim Herzog, forecast Monday night that a final decision could be a few more days away Egyptian communiques were more optimistic than the Syrian They said Egyptian troops captured the town of El Qantara of the east bank of the Suez Canal in hand-to-hand combat and raided an oilfield, both held by Israel since the 1968 war Cairo said fires were set at the oilfield, a driller was destroyed and our troops returned safely to their bases There was no word on the attack from the Israelis The field supplies most of Israel s domestic oil needs Egypt said Israeli planes caused some civilian casualties when they attacked the city of Port Said at the northern end of the Suez Canal Monday night An Israeli spokesman said the attacks lasted all day Monday but insisted only missile bat teries and other military targets around the city were hit Egypt warned today it might make retaliatory air strikes against Israeli towns An Israeli military spokesman said the Syrians had fired long-range Soviet-made ground-to-ground rockets at Israeli civilian settlements during the last two days.He said the rockets, which have a range of 40 miles and a 110-pound warhead, caused some casualties and damage A school was destroyed but the children were in the shelter at the time Interir.ttent mortar fire also was fired early today from Lebanon at three Israeli settlements.Israel radio said No damage was caused Each side's claims differed widely, and foreign correspond ents were prevented from going to the fronts to get confirmation Egypt and Syria said they brought down 60 more Israeli planes Monday for a three-day total of 160.a third of Israel s 480-plane air force. The Israeli command said its air losses were far less than those of the Arabs, which it estimated at 85 to 90 planes Naval action also was reported with Israel claiming its naval units sank three Egyptian missile boats in a Mediterranean battle off the Nile Delta without suffering damage themselves.Security Council- stalemate UNITED NATIONS (CP) Prospects for swift Security Council action to end the Middle East war looked bleak after the 15-country body cut short a meeting Monday night Back-stage negotiations continued The main disagreement was over the positions the opposing armies should take up following an end of hostilities No date was set for a further meeting, but diplomatic sources said it could be held late today The United States appeared alone Monday with its proposal that the council call for a return to military positions held before the outbreak of fighting Saturday China called the idea preposterous" and.with the Soviet Union, demanded Israeli withdrawal from all Arab lands occupied in the 1967 war Some sources said war news was so contradictory that some council members were waiting for a clearer picture to emerge before taking position on a ceasefire resolution U S Ambassador John Scab told the council the least damaging way to ei‘ the fighting was to restore the ceaseTire Tines that Egypt and Syria crossed Saturday Later he said the United States had ideas which we will be discussing within the government and with other governments SOVIETS.CHINESE AGREE Soviet Ambassador Jacob Ma hk said Israel must be forced to abandon the parts of Egypt Jordan and Syria it has occupied with the "support of imperialist circles" since 1967 He blamed Israel and its allies for the outbreak of fighting Election notebook PQ weekend whipping boy MONTREAL (CP >—Leaders of three of Quebec s four political parties spent Monday criticizing the Parti Québécois while PQ leader Rene Levesque claimed that voters lists in Montreal ridings were inaccurate for the Oct 29 provincial election Mr Levesque told 650 persons attending his first public campaign meeting in his home riding of Dorion just west of here that more than 100.000 qualified voters have been left off lists in 24 east-end ridings He also told reporters that another 25.000 are missing from lists in 10 west-end ridings Those figures he said, were arrived at by checking Montreal water tax records and by door-to-door surveys by party members A permanent voters list for all Quebec was drawn up last summer but Montreal voters have a nine-day period starting Oct 11 to make corrections to the list Earlier Monday.Premier Robert Bourassa told a rally in Dorion that the Parti Québécois will meet its Waterloo today when it unveils its budget for the first year of an independent Quebec Mr Bourassa.who is not campaigning during the next three days, said he had asked earlier that the Parti Québécois unveil its budget but the sepa- ratist party is doing so just before election day.cutting short debate I have the impression this will be a gloomy document Mr Bourassa said He suspected the Parti Québécois would present a surplus but "thev have worked very hard to arrive at the surplus He said the Liberals would have answers for all the Parti Québécois figures, with the proof to back up their replies. At St.Raymond.30 miles west of hours Monday night after the United States rejected Soviet and Chinese demands that a ceasefire resolution include a demand that Israel withdraw from all territory seized in the 1967 war The US proposed that the council call for a restoration of the ceasefire lines before Egypt and Syria attacked Saturday U S Secretary of State Henry Kissinger warned in a speech in Washington Monday night that the U S -Soviet detente could tall apart if the Soviet Union failed to act responsibly in the Middle East Earlier the White House disclosed that President Nixon and Soviet Communist party chief Leonid Brezhnev ex changed messages Sundas night about the new crisis in the Middle East Israel said its troops had halted the Egyptian thrust into the Sinai peninsula and pushed the Egyptian troops and tanks back to three beachheads But it admitted that fierce fighting was continuing The Egyptian version was completely different The Middle East News Agency said the Egyptian troops that crossed the canal Saturday "drove back Israeli forces, destroyed most of their equipment and forced them to retreat Levesque had acted differently when he was a Liberal cabinet minister in 1965 Mr Dupuis told 500 persons attending a nomination meeting that Mr Levesque then minister of natural resources had been mistaken in renewing mining contracts with American firms in the northern Quebec region of Ungava. He said he is not afraid of debating the PQ leader because I have already confronted Maurice Duplessis at the age of 25 when I was a member of the national assembly Mr Dupuis, who referred to Premier Bourassa as "little Boubou and the little fellow in short pants' also claimed credit for stopping the terrorist Front de Liberation du Quebec < FLQ Although the FLQ has been dormant since the a basis Afterwards one spokesman from each group gave a short response to the re assembled group Summing it up in a few words, it would seem all had thoughts of how church union can be done to everybody's satisfaction through sociability in the church and community gathering of Anglican Church Women and United Church Women with a church union discussion and many more such ideas were presented A short worship period was in the charge of the Magog UCW Mrs Zen Judson played the organ for the singing of a hvmn She accompanied the soloist Mrs Norma Bailey who sang The Lord's My Shepherd The solo was proceeded bv remarks given bv Mrs Nellie Adams, based on the theme Living with Quiet Courage Prayers followed led by Mrs Carroll Harris At noon the Centenary church women served a delicious buffet dinner Rev G W Stokes, pastor of the church spoke the blessing and also welcomed the visitors At 1:30 p m the rally was reconvened and opened with a sing-song Mrs Judson played the piano and Mrs Jessye Pierce led the singing Mrs Muriel Cass spoke words of appreciation to everyone who had a part in making the day such a wonderful success in fellowship and study of the plan of union Mrs Eleanor Baldwin, and a group totaling nine women who had attended the three-day summer event at North Shore Montreal, gave gleanings on the events This included music.Mrs.Smith spoke about Dr Beck, leader of the project, attended by 150 women and 30 who came and went. She referred in brief to the four lectures of Dr Beck based upon trust and consequence challenge as to the church are we elected or called to serve God and covenant, the new word with God also touched upon other pertinent words of this great leader Mrs Baldwin spoke about Rev Douglas W ilson s talk concerning his work as chaplain at the Douglas Hospital, the waits and needs of so many of the people who are there Others spoke about events that took place at the three day session, addresses, morning devotions, workshops, summed up as three days of friendship, study and service, three days where everyone is someone Rev Dr W J Close arrived to give the rally closing address He was introduced bv Mrs Mayhew In IC84 King St.West — Sherbrooke — 562 4005 By Lawrence E Lamb.M D W ith each new sack of letters that arrives on my desk I can always be sure there will be a number asking about small breasts The only people in the world more interested than men in how a woman's breasts look are women Most women's concern about small breasts is more than Dr.Lamb Just appearing attractive to men Women often equate femininity with their breast development It is the inescapable proof of womanhood Manx women feel they have been shortchanged by nature, and in some instances they have All want to do something about it Today I want to review for those women just what they can expect from the measures that are now avail able Many women have tried those highly advertised breast development methods Most of these don't work A good many of these depend upon using a cup like device that jets water over the breast Others depend upon contrast mg baths for the breast area, applying alternating hot and cold water This isn t all that easy for the woman who hasn't got a lot to bathe to begin with, and the end result is disappointing to say the least In general, you should avoid all publicly advertised breast development procedures An approach I have often recommended is to use exer rises that improve the muscles of the shoulders and chest These are the exercises of rotating your arms hack ward like swimming a back stroke or other exercises designed to strengthen the mus des between the shoulder blades to improve a woman s posture These are of some help for the woman who ha< moderately small breasts They will not enlarge the breast at all.but by improv ing the posture they help to accentuate the positive Those exercises of placing your hands together with the palrm against each other and press mg help to build up the muscles over the front of the chest By building a muscular base they help a small breast appear more prominent Another aid for women with moderately small breasts is the birth control pill The female hormones in these tend to cause some water retention and.through this and other mechanisms, enlarge the breasts slightly Usually these have the biggest effect in the woman who already has ample or even too much to suit her You can get a lot of differ ent opinions from doctors about the advisability of using surgery for small breasts Some are dead set against it and think a woman should be glad she has no other health problems than small breasts Others feel it is so important to many women’s ego that sensible measures are justified There is no doubt about the importance of the ego to all of us.men and women When a person thinks he is unattractive it undermines his self-confidence and prepares the way for innumerable psychological problems Yes.counseling sometimes helps but it takes a long time to convince a woman she real ly doesn t need to look normal That is all many of the women with truly small breasts want Correcting the real problem normalizing the breasts, is the fastest and most effective form of psychotherapy in some of these women What procedures can a woman use to do something about really small breasts0 The most commonly used procedure today is the under the-breast implant These are made of a silicone hag filled with silicone gel They are shaped like a breast and have the feel of a human breast These are far superior to the old sponge-like implants used in the past They often became rock hard and were dis turbing because they didn't have that natural feel Another type of silicone sack is the inflatable These are tucked under the breast between the breast tissue and the underlying muscle Once they are in place, they are filled with salt water, similar to our own body water The size of the breast can be controlled by how much salt water is injected They contain a valve-like device that enables closing off the sack These are somewhat softer than the sill The Private Life cone gel sacks One of their big advantages i< that the incision required to insert them in their deflated state is quite small It doesn’t take much more than a puncture-like in cision underneath the breast to obtain access to the space behind the breast The gel sack implant, or other device, will require a larger incision, depending upon the size of the implant What about the silicone injections’’ They are horrible and no reputable physician uses them The silicone may actually move and there have even been some deaths report ed from injections Even if all goes well at first, the silicone will harden and become indistinguishable from the lumps of breast cancer The physician then has little choice other than to remove the in volved breast tissue to be cer tain it isn t cancer After the hardened silicone and the breast tissue are removed then the woman is in dire need of an implant of some type Do implants cause cancer0 No They don’t prevent it either A woman will continue to need regular examinations to detect any early changes The implant will not interfere with the usual breast examination An implant in a normal but small breast will not even in terfere with a woman s ability to lactate and nurse her baby Some women however, won t be able to do so adequately with or w ithout an implant Some very flat chested women with little or no breast tissue are the most difficult to help The implant will be most noticeable Some sur geons have placed the implant underneath the chest muscle in this case Still another approach is to transplant some of the fat tissue from some other location on the body, if any is available, to help with the padding effect Send vour questions to Dr Lamb m core of this newspaper PO Bo* 1551 Radio Citv Station New York N Y 10019 For a cop* of Dr Lamb s booklet on the people are normal and heathy, then I wanna be sick Sign me - Freaked Out Dear Freaked I hope you don t think all homosexuals look and act like that What you describe sounds like the lunatic fringe Many homosexuals are dignified, soft-spoken people They do not wear high heels or wigs The only real difference between them and us is that they prefer as sex partners members of their own gender Thanks for the report Dear Ann Landers I visited my sister a few weeks ago Something I saw in her home has been bothering me and I can't get it out of my mind My sister's husband is very strict with the children They are nice youngsters - bright and well-behaved - but they are terrified of him The middle child, a boy of seven, seems to have a small appetite His father forces him to eat and every night there is a scene at the dinner table.Once the boy excused himself and threw up Another time he began to cry because his father yelled at him for 15 minutes and shook him for being a baby î didn t say anything to my sister, but l feel now that I should write to her.Or would she consider it interfering0 -On My Mind.Dear On That father needs counseling And the kids will need it.too.from your description Perhaps if you suggest to your sister that SHE discuss the family situation with the school counselor, it would be a useful first step Dear Ann Landars: What is this world coming to when a My mother is 84 and she lives alone.L ,d bless her I'm sure my telephone calls mean a great deal to her I try to telephone at least four times a dav The world needs more love and consideration and
