hopes will bring the Liberal party back into power October 30 During the day.Mr Trudeau travelled through Compton.Sherbrooke.Shefford and Brome-Mississquoi counties drumming up support among voters who in later vears have increasingly continued to support the Social Credit party and have begun to endanger what used to be secure Liberal ridings It marked the tirst time since 1968 that Mr Trudeau had visited the counties for party support However, the reception given to the Prime Minister was not as warm as the one he received on the eve of the last ge.ieral election On Friday evening about 400 supporters attended a public meeting in the Granby Arena to listen to Mr Trudeau defend his government s policies during its term of office Organizers blamed poor timing and the fact that Friday night was shopping night in Granby for the poor turnout in the arena that could have held more than 4.000 people During the day.Mr Trudeau did not make any election promises but asked the population “to return the Liberal Party to power so that it could continue to carry out the programs and the policies which it had started four years ago and had done so well.,, “I am not here to promise you anything — just to ask your support which will enable us to continue our programs." he said Friday afternoon The public meeting in Granby was the only scheduled one during his whole day of campaigning in the Eastern Townships At the Granby meeting, he defended the existence of the Department of Regional For more on Prime Minister Trudeau’s; ‘.visit to the Eastern Townships, piease see: • pageS More than 400 municipal officials and service club members attended the dinner which was followed by a question period The questions, however, were so slow in coming that Mr Trudeau offered to give a opening were Yves Forest.Brome-MississquofMP.and Jean Luc Pepin.Minister of Trade and Commerce The expansion of Coronet Carpet was partially financed by an Economic Expansion grant of more than half a and there was good reason Before the board was set up.serious ills were evident in the industry, in which producers were very much at the mercy of the buyers The board removed some of these ills gave protection to the growers and brought a measure of stabilization However, the basic premise of marketing boards is that the forced regulation of the supply of the product will have a direct effect on the price received; in other words, it less tobacco is grown (through the imposition of acreage quotas) the price the grower will receive will be higher This apparently has not been the case with Ontario tobacco growers The researchers report that the acreage controls imposed on growers bv the board not only have been ineffective in getting higher prices thev mav well have resulted in a drop in producers' earnings This has happened because' the lower acreage in Ontario may have encouraged people elsewhere in Canada to grow tobacco to the point where they are in competition for export markets with Ontario growers The report therefore recommends that there should be less control bv the board on producers* operations; that a two price system for tobacco should be set up in which tobacco sold domestically would be sold for more than that sold for export (similar to the two-price system that exists for wheat); and that greater efforts should bo made to expand export markets \n aspect of producer-controlled marketing boards is that they almost invariably lead to higher prices for the consumer \s the (ilobe and Mail commented editorially little has been done to analyze the over-all impact of marketing boards on groups other than the producers of the primary products (vegetables, hogs turkeys, etc ) involved Perhaps it is time such a survey was made with a view to determining if producer marketing boards are as beneficial, in a broad sense as their supporters claim KIIORI) Only English Dcnlv m the Eastern Townships I’ublishrd b\ F astern Townships Publishing t o I id P o Box \2M ::9< P R Terrare Sherbrooke que Telephone him jfis Second class registration number M14J SUBSCRIPTION RATES Mail Hubxrnption Ral»** and l arner Paid in Advance «(PA RmIm Mail A ( PA lo I oral Area * tlk INI 9 INI S Ml 3 on Mail Subscriptions outside I oral Area or on existing earner routes 12 months S23 40 II months II 70 3 months ( on I month 3 on The U.S.hallucination election WASHINGTON Ulain downright hallucination is the only word that describes the kind of'unreality characterizing the election campaign to date Sen George McGovern savs that the United States can get along very nicely without a serious national defense President Nixon intimates that he has already brought peace in his time or will soon do so Meanwhile the central fact in the world political landscape is not the Vietnamese war It is not even the dangerous Middle Eastern situation that produced the murders at the Olympic Games and the subsequent Israeli reprisals It is something infinitely worse at least in its future potential It is in fact the never-ceasing Soviet military buildup on the frontier of Communist China According to an accurate recent report, three new nechanized divisions have been added this summer to the Soviet forces now threatening China Anywhere in this town you can get an argument about the resulting total of these Soviet forces. In the Pentagon 49 divisions is a good average estimate. In the Central Intelligence Agency, certain analysts art* deeply wedded to the old liberalization theory abolit the Soviet Union These men have therefore been fighting a powerful rear guard action against the facts ever since the Soviet buildup began Hence their figure is below 49 divisions Both in the CIA and in the Pentagon, there are also very able men who use figures well above 49 divisions In addition.Soviet units not divisionally organized.Soviet border guards and the puppet Mongolian divisions all rather obviously need to be counted Furthermore, the Byzantine workings of the American "order of battle system make it quite automatic that even the highest estimate tends to be an underestimate r Matter of fact with Joseph Alsop^y Onlv two things are certain The Soviet buildup is still in progress, growing more menacing with each passing month And this buildup has now reached really vast proportions There are simple reasons, too.whv this mounting Soviet threat on China s frontier is really the central fact in the world political landscape* The purpose, quite obviously, is a preventive attack to destroy China's nuclear power before China s nuclear power grows too great The Soviet decision whether go" or no go.must also be made not later than the end of 1974 After that, the snake will be too big to scotch This reporter has heard at least one U S government insider a man of extreme ability place the odds on a Soviet go decision at no less than 70-30 Most would put the odds much lower Vet no one can deny, in the face of the facts about the Soviet buildup, that there is at least a material chance that the decision will be go It that is the case, in turn, the whole world will be automatically plunged into something like a Hitler-time without an Adolf Hitler An unprovoked Soviet attack on China must begin with a nuclear attack Such a development will alter every calculation, including every calculation about Soviet behavior in other crucial areas like the Middle East In sum.there is a great and desperate turning point ahead One kind of turn will produce the results J 1 % A TV writer! — Which shows are YOU to blame for.?' invested in such public projects as the redevelopment of French cities, corruption on a sizable scale seems to exist The Gaul I ist movi become just another political party This perhaps was inevitable, especially in the absence of the general who was the founder of Gaullism and the mam byre distinguishing it from other middle-of-the-road parties in France Whether the disclosures now being made and those which preceded them will snowball into a major political storm even to the point of unseating the Gaullists remains to he seen Frenchmen are again being given incentive to resume the attitude of hitter skepticism towards politicians which was the hallmark of national life before Charles de Gaulle assumed power as a self-described re novator of France in 1958 But it should be remembered that both West Germanv and Britain also have lately been the scene of disclosures which reflected badlv on politicians close to the centre of their par summarized in the preceding paragraph The other kind of turn will lead to a wholly novel development of great power relationships not without risk but at least rational And this development will emphatically include the I S -Soviet relationship Add further, that the threat on China's frontier has been the single secret of President Nixon's diplomacy Without that threat, he could never have been invited to Peking Without the invitation to Peking, the Moscow meeting would also have been impossible, at least in the circumstances of that moment Add.finally, that the primary long-term aim of the President's entire diplomatic program is to pass the desperate turning point, now King just ahead, without Hitler-like consequences. You can see.then why the atmosphere of the presidential campaign can be indeed must be called hallucinatory A good deal of the blame belongs to the press With a few honorable exceptions like William Beecher of the New York Times, the U S.press now takes McGovern-like views on such matters The central political fact in the world landscape is therefore too unpleasant to report or discuss In these circumstances you cannot blame the candidates But it is hard to be charitable about the liberal intellectual community where the tendency to self-delusion ultimately originates V the right with William F.Buckley Jr nient ipcx-.irs to have hamentarv systems The war on wealth McGovern s w ar on wealth Senator McGovern, who is the candidate of so many of the intellectuals, continues to mystify bv the arguments on which he lays so very much stress.Recently he was in Texas, and there he lashed out bitterly at John Connally.who has organized Democrats for Nixon Senator McGovern said that he did not care for the support of "Connally and his billionaire friends " Now the point bears analysis.John Connally was several times elected governor of the State of Texas not by the state's billionaires. They number.I should guess, three Or.if you wish to allow for hyperbole and assume that when Senator McGovern said billionaires." he really meant millionaires" even as when he said he would support Senator Eagleton one thousand percent he really meant he would support Senator Eagleton one hundred per cent let us assume there are a few hundred, or a few thousand of them in Texas.John Connally got a clear ma jority of the voters of the State of Texas.Connally fancies himself a New Deal Democrat He backed John Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey most vigorously, but drew the line at George McGovern, as one third of the nation s Democrats propose to do Why does that suggest to McGovern that Connally is motivated onlv by a concern for his billionaire friends?” But McGovern, who himself earned over $100.000 in 1972 is obsessed with the subject of wealth He thinks of it the way the ladies who formed the Anti-Saloon League thought of booze: as inherently wicked, and the more of it you have, the more wicked you are Consider McGovern's ad hominem blast, on the same occasion in Texas, against one or two people whose salaries were enormously high last year, one of them the President of Dow Chemical, the other the President of the Ford Motor Company George McGovern told lasciviously the story of the head of Ford.Mr lacocca.getting some $400.000 last vear No wonder McGovern drew out his tale that the head of Ford should not have to worry about the rising price of hamburger, and so on and so on A few minutes of that and you find yourself not only resenting the head of Ford but convinced that the system that permits him to get $400.000 is somehow evil I want to know why Let’s say that Ford sells two and a half million vehicles in a typical year Then $400.000 in salary paid to its president comes to sixteen cents per automobile Now $400.000 is a great deal of money, but what business is it of George McGovern if the directors of Ford feel that they would rather have lacocca as head of Ford, even at the cost of sixteen cents per vehicle sold, than someone else, at a lesser figure .> Who is affected bv that decision? The stockholders But they can vote in new management if thev want to What business is it of the government to set a ceiling on salaries, or to confiscate salaries past a certain point'’ Notice that Senator McGovern always offers up as an illustration of inordinate salary the high-priced business executive The reason for that is obv ious People don't in general know just what it is that the presidents of Ford, or of GM.or of duPont.or of Standard Oil actually do: and therefore high figures of compensation strike them as extortionary However there's no resentment bv the public towards the Rolling Stones who.in the course of their 30-concert tour recently took m $3.500.000 When George McGovern goes lecturing, to eke out his living he accepts a fee as large as the sponsoring committee offers I have never heard him sav that his fee is too large It reflects in a sense his market value Mr McGovern's aim is to stimulate envv and ignorance and greed and to generate class env v I invite him next time he gives an illustration of unjustified reward to use not the names of the presidents of corporations, hut the names of the Rolling Stones, or the Grateful Dead or Flvis Presley or Elizabeth Tavlor That would introduce the subject in a soberer wav But that would not appeal to Boh \ Carol \ Ted \ Alice, as thev plus Ken Galbraith* are about all McGovern has left I THU S Ht'K H KOOK K KH OKI) MON SEPT KM HER 1» ItT?- i ASTRO-GUIDE By C«ean Tu«td«y S«pt#mb«r 19 The Day Under Your Sign LIBRA l fcept 23 lo Oct ARIftl!» SEPTEMBER II, IKI ¦ PM stages campaign sweep through Townships How much of the old Trudeaumania remains?SHKH BROOK E (WM> Will Trudeau have the same appeal to women in Canada this electionJudging from Friday s visit to the Kastern Townships, it would appear not There was hardly a trace of the old Trudeaumania No women rushed up to embrace the prime minister, there were no adoring glances, no glassy eyes, no weak knees, no fluttering hearts Indeed, the only exuberance shown was by the children who pushed forward to grasp the prime minister s hand and to get his autograph on hockey sticks, cigarette packs or any other surface thev could find Apart from politics, one of the reasons for the fading of Trudeaumania appears to be that the prime minister has had to suffer a rapid transformation of his image.Since the last election, the 52-vear-old prime minister has become a married man with a family and it has been necessary to create a brand new image to fit this role The young, carefree, swinging liberal bachelor has been replaced by a more conservative, respectable image Gone is the mod.often loutlandish gear which contributed to the old charismatic appeal. Now it appears the prime minister has adapted a more restrained style of clothing On Friday at Sherbrooke Airport.Trudeau appeared wearing a definitely non-trendy beige linen suit, a rust colored shirt and conservative dark tie and shoes The only debonair touch was the traditional flower in his buttonhole a yellow rose later replaced by a red carnation The old Trudeau gaiety and frivolity was absent and he appeared business-like and serious The only spontaneous smile was at the antics of some children at Farnham during Jean Luc Pepin’s speech The new image seems to be paternal and benign rather than a swinging, carefree bachelor However, part of the old youthful concept remains Trudeau looks younger than his 52 years and his hair remains long at the back and sides. Some of the old charismatic appeal also remains because of his colorful past and even though now married, he has a young glamorous, fashionable wife who could be as big a voting attraction as Jacqueline Kennedy was.In anv case, even it Trudeaumania fades, no one has ever suggested Stanfieldmania as a substitute or spoken of Stanfield’s charismatic appeal to women So if women vote for the most attractive candidate, it looks as it Trudeau will retain most of the women’s vote.Obituaries / E PROVOST MTS.INC 20, 15th At# North, Shtrbrooko Sb9 2*22 569 5251 569-1700 Authorised Deolor of Rock of Ages snd Eventide Mon vith
