Record Sold SHERBROOKE - A group of seven businessmen, headed by Sherbrooke lawyer George Roy MacLaren, have purchased the Sherbrooke Record The new publishers.Townships Communication Inc will assume control immediately. The members of the Board are Conrad Black, Toronto; Norbert Dunlavey, Bromont ; George MacLaren, R R 1 Beebe and Lennoxville; James MacLaren, Cumberland, Ont ; Aubrey Schwartz.Montreal and Georgeville; Norman Webster, Oakville, Ont.; and Philip Webster, Massa wippi Mr.MacLaren, senior partner of the firm MacLaren, Hackett, Campbell, Turner, Bissonnette and Bouchard, will resign from his law practice July 31 to take over as publisher of The Record Mr Norman Nicholl will remain as general manager. The Record, the only English daily outside of Montreal, will become the only independent English newspaper in the province. It was formerly owned by Eastern Townships Publishing Company, controlled by Peter White, Conrad Black and David Radier.Mr.MacLaren says he plans no immediate changes but would eventually like the newspaper to concentrate on local coverage, in an attempt to reach readers spread throughout the Townships “My feeling is that The Record cannot exist solely as the Sherbrooke Record but must serve the entire English speaking community, in the Eastern Townships,” he says.Mr.MacLaren was born in Brome County and received his early education in Knowlton, Buckingham, Que., Rockcliffe Park, Ont.and Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He earned an Arts degree from McGill University and graduated from the University of Laval with a law degree in 1964 He started his law career in Montreal before coming to Sherbrooke in 1971 to open his own firm His only expenence with the press, he admits, is his addiction to a half-dozen newspapers daily “I hope the readership will be tolerant until I find my way,” says the ex-lawyer Accused by some of his friends of being more than a little crazy for investing in English media at a time when people are so insecure about the future, Mr MacLaren is confident The Record will earn a niche in the future of the Townships “My involvement is an act of faith in the future of the English speaking people both in the Townships and the province.” Even if Mr MacLaren would like a month or two to decide the exact direction of his new purchase, he has decided on the inalterable goal “One of the reasons I got involved in this project was that 1 was sick of reading Winnipeg Free Press editorials in a Sherbrooke newspaper As long as I am publisher there will never be another Winnipeg Free Press editorial in The Record.’’ The purchase of the Sherbrooke Record by Townships Communications coincides with the newspaper’s 80th anniversary. It was established in 1897 by amalgamating the Sherbrooke Gazette and the Sherbrooke Examiner The paper’s founder, the late Leonard S.Channell, set up shop in a borrowed basemeru using a borrowed press.A year later, the paper rented small quarters on Wellington Street and used a small-hand cranked press The population of Sherbrooke at the time was just over ten thousand people and t he Sherbrooke Record was a long, narrow, two-page paper costing a penny.Today the Record uses the most modern computerized typesetting systems available and a large Goss offset press, while Sherbrooke and the Townships has grown to almost 170,000 people The Record’s new editorial policy will be found on page 4 ?A GEORGE MacLAREN ¦ GEORGE MacLAREN I believe that a newspaper is an essential com munit \ institution. It is my hope that the Sherbrooke Record will he a reflection of COLLAPSES — This wooden bridge, connecting the Isle Marie camp ground with shore, collapsed Saturday afternoon sending five Sherbrooke firemen and a $30.000 fire truck into the water.20 feet below The the St.Francis River Saturday, when the wooden bridge they were crossing, gave way.Fireman Theophie Degrace is in critical condition, in the intensive care unit of the CHU, after suffering a skull fracture Firemen Jacques Monfette and Michel Laverdiere were released after examination, badly bruised and fireman Guy Chayer, who was driving the pumper, was treated for shock and later released The fifth fireman, Eddy Dumas escaped injury by jumping from his position on the running board, to safety The ten ton pumper, one of the last three bought by the fire department and worth over $30,000, was declared a total loss when raised from the water The accident occurred at the Isle Marie camp ground on the back road to Lennoxville, around noon Saturday The firemen, from station one were responding to a resue call they received from a camper on the island just before noon The firemen crossed the bridge to get to the island and upon their arrival found that the occupants of an overturned canoe were safe on the opposite side of the river And when the firemen attempted to cross the wooden bridge, to go around and Dick ud the two youngsters, the bridge gave way, sending the pumper into the water Fire officials stated that they had no previous knowledge that the bridge would not support a heavy vehicle and that there weren’t any signs posted stating the bridge was unsafe The names of the two youngsters are being withheld by police Huey Newton returns to US, set to fight for his freedom OAKLAND.Calif (AP) — Black Panther leader Huey Newton, who in the 1960s helped found the gun-toting radical group that now aspires to peaceful reform, has returned to fight for his legal freedom after 24 years in Cuba Newton.35, arrived at San Francisco International Airport Sunday night on a flight from Vancouver to face murder and assault charges and to resume active leadership of the Black Panther party.Newton was taken into custody by Oakland police, but not before responding to a warm welcome from a boisterous crowd of about 500 persons.“I’m glad to be back with you,” Newton said while standing atop an airline counter with his wife, Gwen, and Black Panther chairman Elaine Brown “Stay with me and we’ll become closer together.” He was locked in an Oakland jail cell less than two hours after his return A lawyer for Newton said an effort would be made today to free him on bail In his airport speech, Newton pledged to work for full employment and economic redistribution.“I have returned to continue my commitment to work for progressive change in our society,” he said. The Black Panther party has changed its tactics from when it was founded in 1966 The Panther chant then was, “The revolution has come, pick up the gun ” Today, members say they are more interested in getting out the vote, escorting senior citizens to the market and feeding children “An armed struggle is not the way at this time in history,” Newton said last week in Canada, where he was detained by Canadian authorities before being allowed to return to the United States “I go with the democratic will of the people, and the people are not ready for an armed revolution.” The Black Panthers now have the backing of Oakland Mayor Lionel Wilson “The party has become an active contributor to the community in several important ways,” Wilson, the city’s first black mayor, said Friday “I have seen substantial evidence that the party has a sincere desire to work within the framework of our institutions and abide by the same laws that we all have to abide by ” ARRESTED IN CANADA Newton fled the United States before facing trial on charges from four separate incidents He returned from Cuba June 25, arriving in Canada with the hope of talking with lawyers without interference from U S.officials.He was arrested after Canadian officials said he could not remain in the country because of U S.convictions for crimes of “moral turpitude ” Nigeria urges OUA to stop all conflicts LIBREVILLE, Gabon (AP) — President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, Sunday urged the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to create a body with power to stop conflicts between African countries Addressing the annual OAU summit conference, Obasanjo blamed “the machinations of our so-called friends from outside” for the ideological divisions and local conflicts splitting the predominantly black-governed continent. He urged OAU “to create immediately and effectively a body with the necessary powers to respond promptly and effectively to intra African crisis situations to help defuse and neutralize situations which bring countries to the brink of armed conflict.” Disputes between African neighbors—part icular I y between Algeria and Morocco; Somalia and Ethiopia; Somalia and Kenya; Libya and Chad; Zaire and Angola; and Ethiopia and Sudan-dominated OAU ministerial meetings here prior to the conference FORCE NEEDED Obasanjo said he regretfully reached the conclusion that force is the only way to end what he called the evil system of apartheid in South Africa, although he respected the good faith of those who believe negotiation with the governmemt of Prime Minister John Vorster of South Africa was still possible Obasanjo also called on Rhodesia’s feuding liberation movements to settle their quarrels and “show unity of purpose and action.” He also expressed support for U S.and British efforts to arrange a peaceful transition to black rule in white-governed Rhodesia “Nobody in Africa is seeking to impose any political arrangement or leadership on an independent Zimbabwe (Rhodesia),” he said “Africa’s goal is the freedom of the people of Zimbabwe to determine their own future US may help Lebanese to form army WASHINGTON (AP) — The Carter administration is considering the possibility of providing US.help to rebuild the I^ebanese army, but has run into skepticism among members of Congress, a Senate source said Sunday The administration plan would allow I^ebanon credits to purchase US light infantry weapons for a force of 3,000 to 4,000 men for the army that was disbanded during the country’s civil upheavals.A 30,000-man Arab league force, made up mostly of Syrian units, now maintains order in the country A Senate source said administration proposals have received “minimal enthusiasm” from fellow crossed the Canada Day celebrations included a track and field meet finish line with a big smile, at the head of the field.Bury’s for youngsters under the age of 14.A film career ahead?Pickell swims third fastest fly TORONTO (CP) — A bit of Hollywood has rubbed off on swimmer Steve Pickell. On Sunday, the last night of the three-day Canada Cup swim meet held at the Etobicoke Olympium, Pickell won two individual races—both coming in impressive times Pickell, however, was more interested in talking about a film being made of him than his two victories.“It’s going to make for a better film, eh?” he said as he towelled off, in answer to questions about his wins in the 100-metre freestyle and 100-metre butterfly.“This isn’t going to be jock film,” he went on.“It’s going to be more of an art film.” Film career aside, Pickell’s performance Sunday was impressive. His 52.69-second effort in the freestyle gave him the eighth fastest 100 freestyle time in the world this year. His butterfly was even better.Pickell swam a 56.74 in the fly—third fastest in the world this year.PUSHED BY TEAM-MATE In winning both events, he was pushed by Joe Bottom of Los Angeles, a Montreal Olympics silver medallist in the 200-metre butterfly.Besides being one of his chief competitors.Bottom is Pickell’s team-mate at the University of Southern California “I was lucky,” he said of his win over Bottom in the butterfly.“I think he was just ahead of me, but I just lunged for the wall better than he did.” Pickell, 19, of Toronto, also recorded an excellent time in winning the 100-metre back-stroke Friday.Although pleased with his victories, Pickell said he isn’t motivated by winning.“Actually, winning isn’t all that important to me,” he said.“Setting a goal and making it is more important to me.” Halifax’s Nancy Garapick turned in a top performance in the 100-metre freestyle The 15-year-old was clocked in 58.14 to put her seventh fastest in the world this year.Garapick just edged Johanna Malloy of Thunder Bay, Ont., who finished one-hundredth of a second behind.Melissa Belote of Springfield, Va , an Olympic gold medallist in 1972, won the 200-metre backstroke in 2:621.13.MOVED UP Thunder Bay’s Liz McKinnon moved into the top 10 world rankings with a 17:13.36 performance in the 1500-metre freestyle.McKinnon moved into fourth spot in the world and second-place Susan Mason of Halifax moved into fifth.Brazil’s Djan Madruga was an upset winner in the 200-metre backstroke.Madruga, who recorded the second slowest time in the heats, swam a 2:10.15.Wendy Quirk of Montreal won the 100-metre butterfly in 1:04.48 and Paul Midgley of Montreal, took the 1,500 freestyle.Pointe Claire won the women’s 4-x-lOO metre medley relay and Etobicoke the men’s counterpart.Bottom won Saturday’s 50-metre freestyle in 23.74 seconds, setting a Canadian Open record.JoAnn Baker of Thunder Bay took the 400-metre individual medley over Wins $28,000 at Mosport Foyt wins Diamond Indy MOSPORT, Ont.(CP) -A.J.Foyt may not be that familiar with racing on road courses, but he was familiar enough with the Mosport track Sunday to go home with nearly $28,000.The veteran Texan, who commuted to Daytona Beach, Fla., to qualify a car for today’s Firecracker 400 stock car race, took a lap penalty but still won by two seconds over secondplace Gary Bettenhausen in the Molson Diamond Indy. The race—76 laps over Mosport’s 2^-mile layout, the only road course on the United States Auto Club schedule this year—took two hours, three minutes and 35 seconds.Foyt was clocked at an average speed of 90.733 miles an hour.It was well off the 108,564 m.p.h.Dan Gurney turned in winning the last USAC race for Indy-type cars held here in 1968 “We don’t get much chance to promote road courses for these races,” said Foyt, who includes only two such victories among the more than 50 USAC checkered flags he has iaken. He spent most of the $140,000 race nursing his Coyote-Foyt along after snapping his gear shift off near the floor “about the eighth or ninth lap.” Bettenhausen, in a Dragon Offy, was more than a full lap behind at the finish but officially finished just two seconds off the winner’s official time.SNEVA TAKES THIRD Tom Sneva, also in the 75th lap with his Lightning Offy, took third spot ahead of Todd Gibson, in an Eagle DGS; Jerry Grant, Eagle Offy; Salt Walther, McLaren, DGS, and the only Canadian in the race, Ed Crombie of Williams Lake, B.C., in an Eagle Foyt. The results left Foyt in second place in the USAC points race with 2,080 points.Sneva leads with 2,880 with Wally Dallenbach holding third spot with 1,925 “I was working with about a 5- 16th bolt,” said Foyt of the race that saw him start from No.7 position to move up into contending position behind A1 Unser and Danny Ongais.“I could only operate in third and fourth (gear).” When the Parnelli Cosworths of Unser and Ongais came to grief midway through the race, Foyt’s main pressure came from Roger McCluskey’s Lightning Offy. But that problem was eliminated when McCluskey blew an engine on the 64th lap.Foyt pulled into the pit area with about 10 laps to go, “but that was just to get a drink; I really didn’t need it.” While there were few problems on the track—only nine of the 20 starters finished the race—the only cause for concern was for one of Bill Vukovich’s crew members who caught fire But quick action by others in the pit area prevented any serious injury THE MASSAWIPPI RIVER NEEDS YOU It's dirty and a project is already underway to clean it up.But, we need YOUR PUBLIC Spencer Gore win the first-ever Wimbledon title from a field of less than 10 competitors This year, 336,207 fans streamed through the gates for the 12 days of the tour nament to cheer Bjorn Borg and Virginia Wade, who won the men’s and women s titles in Wimbledon’s centenary year, and the other competitors It wasn’t a record That came two years ago, when 338,591 flocked in But it was enough to get players and tournament officials worried The players complained that too many matches involving top stars were being allocated to some of Wimbledon’s 11 outside courts, where spectators have to stand jammed in narrow passageways to watch. There should be better allocations, with the top stars getting matches on one of the four show courts with plenty of spectator accommodation, they said And Bob Briner, executive director of the Association of Tennis Professionals, said: “Wimbledon should certainly go into the question of possibly closing its gates before the present daily top of 34,000 is reached.” IIIT WITH FEVER With Britain hit by tennis fever following Virginia Wade’s win in the women’s singles— only the third British woman to win here since the war—and with Sweden’s Bjorn Borg, idol of the teen-agers, taking his second men’s title in a row, the Wimbledon authorities are bracing themselves for a population explosion around their courts in 1978 They’ve already made plans to relieve the present discomfort and over crowding with a $17 million facelift This will mean lifting the roof of the famed centre court to get six more rows of seats accommodating an extra 3.000 spectators daily. The centre court, with a U.ooo capacity, was burst ing at the seams Friday and Saturday for the two singles finals On Friday, when Wade, after 14 unsuccessful years of trying, became the first British woman since Ann Jones eight years ago to win the women’s title, the crowd jumped to its feet and sang For She’s a Kolly Good Fellow as Queen Elizabeth presented the champion with the in a tingling five-set mens final, the Borg fans were screaming encouragement at their 21 -year-old idol It was the first time since 1934 that two Europeans had won the two singles titles Fred Perry
