Record WEEK Arts and Entertainment Magazine - ¦ - *.November 6-12, 1998 CAROLINE KEHNE/RECORD CORRESPONDED Unda Santo and Joa Diverse a complement ea page 2 November 6-12, 1998 Townshipsw e e k Variety Armadillo features well-developed characters and rich details The unconventional world of Lorimer Black By Catherine Dean Special to The Record Armadillo by William Boyd When insurance adjuster Lorimer Black discovers the hanging body of a factory owner, he has no idea how his own life will change.Like the blowtorched surface of Lorimer Black’s company Toyota the carefully cultivated carapace surrounding Lorimer Black blisters in a series of traumatic events that cause Black to question his identity, his integrity and the principles of those around him.William Boyd’s seventh novel, appropriately titled Armadillo, is the comic yet touching story of the fall and eventual resurrection of Lorimer Black, né Milomre Blocj, a transplanted Transnis- trian whose immigrant Rom family has laboured to make him into the consummate English gentleman.The change of identity has not been precipitated only by a desire to fit into an English way of life, but through an unlucky life-changing incident from Black’s recent past with which he cannot come to terms.This and other revelations of Lorimer Black’s inner life, some serious, like the sketchy Blocj family history and some comic, like the Classic British caffs’ series, an annotated list of Black’s favorite eateries, come to light in the pages of the ‘Book of Transfiguration,’ a journal cum sleep diary, kept by the protagonist.He is being treated at the ‘Institute of Lucid Dreams’ by his friend and Pimlico neighbour.Dr.Alan Kenbarry, for a sleep disorder.We discover Black has a greater than average ability to control his dreams (dreams over which the sleeper influences the outcome are termed lucid dreams) which results in an extremely light and broken sleep.While Black exhibits substantial control over his dreams, his life, is another story.From Black/Blocj’s giddy infatuation with the beautiful Flavia Malinverno, initially glimpsed through the window of a taxi, to his dealings with the world weary bawdy Marlobe of the local flower stall whose sense of floral aesthetic runs to robust loud colors, Lorimer Black shows himself to be a man of heart.Though his business and personal life go awry, the reader has the sense that Lorimer Black is cushioned by the love of his extended immigrant family and his loyal friends.Grounded in relationships and friendships, the book offers a scathing satire of show business, the angry working man, and the affectations of the upper class.In order to overcome his sleep disorder and his identity crisis, Black will have to learn that life is not wholly controllable.It is testimony to William Boyd’s fine character development the reader is left unsure that such a lesson can really be taken to heart by the main character.Lorimer Black, like even the most peripheral of the novel’s characters is eminently human and redeemable.William Boyd’s seventh novel overflows with credibility, humor and pathos.Catherine Dean is a Lennoxville writer.For The Record EARN VALUABLE SEARS CLUB POINTS! Townshipsw eek Talk oj The Townships November 6-12, 1998 page 3 Yarmush By Tanya Tkach Record Correspondent Knowlton Knowlton’s Michael Yarmush has landed a lead role in a zany new sitcom Radio Active.The show features four high school students at the campus radio station.Yarmush plays willing-to-please Ethan St.John.It is scheduled to debut on the YTV network in January 1999.“I like comedy.It’s a lot more fun because there’s more stuff to play around with," said Yarmush who was chosen for the challenging role in Les Productions Tele-Action newest television series based on the popular French program Radio Enfer.“It’s not too heavy-handed with messages, it’s basically kids just having fun,” said comedic director and writer Jennifer Seguin from Montreal’s improv comedy team On the Spot.Seguin, one of four writers for the 13-segment series, said the show is a combination of the series WKRP, Welcome Back Kotter from the 70s and the current Saved by the Bell.Since she has loads of experience with improv comedy, Seguin wanted the series taped before live audiences for two reasons.To feed the actors energy in developing their skill with jokes and to make the audience feel part of the show.Casting Yarmush as Ethan St.John was easy for Seguin.“We needed someone who was able to understand the depth of this 14-year-old, and all the other kids who auditioned just couldn’t get that balance between being a kid and being an adult, plus have the comedic timing, skills and professionalism,” Seguin explained.“Michael’s got it all, so it was a very, very easy choice.“Michael has been wonderful, his character is developing so much we just want to write him in more and more,” she said.Yarmush said he is able to relate to the character’s attention-seeking gimmicks but doesn’t feel as smart as Ethan who skipped a grade.“Ethan says dumb remarks and I’m always talking dumb stuff all the time -I mean I just say things to get people to laugh,” he said.“But I didn’t skip a grade like he did and I sure won’t be doing that any time soon,” said Yarmush worried about his school grades.This role is Yarmush’s biggest challenge since he finds it hectic combining classes at Massy-Vanier High School and taping two and three weekly sessions of Radio Active in Montreal, so he’s count- Local actor featured in new sitcom shows his comedic side on YTV ing on his lucky stars to complete his final year.He said that on a movie set he usually had time to do his homework but during taping this latest series, not only is he missing a lot of school but he has no time between scenes.“During this show we have three cameras set up so we’re always rehearsing and when we shoot two episodes I miss a week of school,” said Yarmush who’s often too tired in the evenings to do his homework.Lately he doesn’t even have time for his second greatest passion -
