Svend Robinson MP says laws must change Anna Cristofaro Sherbrooke Svend Robinson, NDP Member of Parliament for Burnaby-Douglas and well known social activist told an audience at Bishop’s University Centennial Theatre on Monday night that Canada’s laws are unjust and cruel to people who want to die with dignity and end their suffering.Robinson was invited to speak about physician-assisted suicide as part of Champlain College’s Savithri Chat-topadhyay Memorial Humanities Lecture series, which focuses on human rights. The annual memorial lectures are dedicated to Cattopadhyay, a humanities teacher at Champlain who was actively involved in the human rights struggle.Chattopadhyay passed away in MP Svend Robinson 1988.Robinson spoke about his friend, Sue Rodriguez who chose to end her life after finding it unbearable to continue living with Lou Gehrig’s disease.Robinson was with Rodriguez when she chose to end her lie and has been fighting for legislation allowing for physican-assist-ed suicide.“We as a society, we as Canadians, do a pretty bad job of dealing with death,” Robinson said.“We don’t talk about it.It was to a significant extent the courage and strength and eloquence and profound dignity of Sue Rodriguez that we as Canadians were forced to confront this issue of how we live with terminal illness and how we die.” Rodriguez took her fight to die straight to the Supreme Court of Canada where judges ruled 5-4 against physician-assisted suicide. On Sept.12, 1994, 1SBP»W Rodriguez defied the Supreme Court ruling and ended her life.Robinson has continued leading the dying with dignity crusade since Rodriguez’s death.Earlier this year, a motion introduced by Robinson, which called for the establishment of a committee to study the matter was defeated in the House of Commons.“Any poll that’s been done on this shows that something like 70 or 80 per cent of Canadians want to see changes in the law, and yet politicians won’t even debate the substance of the issue.” Robinson said that Canada’s laws should be as open to physician-assisted suicide as they are in the Netherlands.Robinson points out that although the See robinson, page 5 New chapel The new chapel at St.Luke’s in the Argyll Pavillion was enlarged to better respond to the resident's needs. The magnificent stained glass windows from the former fourth floor chapel now decorate the new chapel. Thanks are extended to Rev.Canon Jervis Reed for helping to retrieve the stained glass windows from the Old Divinity House at Bishop’s University which were created by the same artist and are now part of the new chapel as well. The altar and woodwork have also been moved from the fourth floor chapel.Pictured above are: Sister Marie-Rose Groleau, Rev.Blake Walker, Rev.Canon Robert Jervis Reed, Mgr.Raymond Jodoin, Rev.Douglas Daniel, Rev.Jane Aikman, Father Raymond Morin,Father Robert Giguère.liiyt ¦55 J" Warranty 20 year plus Highest rated LüSoLftJo system Energy glass The Regal collection from ARC0R combines superior design and refined ityle which makes them “Clearly The Best” windows for your house 1215 Wellington St.S., Sherbrooke Portes et Fenêtres BSÜSSÎIE3SISE our house warm?-i WAY/ ''H'uuiiii THE GRIZZWELLS ® by Bill Schorr m m *5av W'i wn ' PUKE- IN a ) \ Turns©.?
