I’m not even sure it’s music!” snapped Joe Pinoni (Nathan Lane) in an episode of the NBC sitcom Encore! Encore! Several TV shows have used the Cats reference as a kind of hip comic shorthand for “a show only a tourist could love.” Whether it’s treasure or trash, the Tony Award-winning musical arrives on PBS Monday, Nov.2, in a Great Performances production sure to please most viewers. The cast includes Elaine Paige, who originated the role of the glamorous Grizabella, and Ken Page, Broadway’s first Old Deuteronomy.Oscar winner John Mills, 90, takes the role of Gus the Theatre Cat.Adapted by Lloyd Webber and original director Trevor Nunn from Eliot’s poetry collection, the musical takes place on the night of the Jellicle Ball, when one lucky feline will be selected for a mystical rebirth into another life.Essentially, Cats is plotless, a lively revue of “specialty acts” by its kitty corps. Some numbers are rousing, many are forgettable, and one - “Memory” - is truly haunting. The Great Performances telecast is a bit of a mixed bag.The frequent close-ups allow viewers to appreciate designer John Napier’s stunning makeup and costumes, although his misty moonlit set CINÉMA ART-CIRCUIT Every Monday at 8 p.m.- Admission $3 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd WILD MAN BLUES CHILDREN’S MATINEE Saturday & Sunday: 10:30 a.m.& 1:15 p.m.BARNEY Cinêm ck Forest • 9 Theatres • Digital Sound • Curved Screens • Free parking Internet: actionfilm.ca/cinema9 821-9999 HAVE FUN AT THE MOVIES!!! Last spring, when CTV President Ivan Fecan announced details of the first fall schedule since Baton assumed full control of the network, he made it clear that W Five would have to recapture its million-plus audience this year if it expected to see a 34th season.“When you get the sense that this is it, there are no second chances, the adrenaline pumps faster than ever before, you don’t hold back, you don’t take days off and it’s a race to the finish line,” says Clark, a former CTV China correspondent who has served as Baton’s one-man national bureau for the past eight years.CTV has taken pains to ensure there will be no excuse for failure. The network has increased W Five’s budget by 50 percent for the season, and has promised not to plague the newsmagazine with the kind of casual preemptions that confused regular viewers in years past. For its part, the network is fine-tuning the show’s format to give it a better chance of connecting with the audience.By sticking with two hosts instead of cycling half a dozen through the W Five anchor chairs, and by spotlighting three correspondents -Susan Ormiston, Jim O’Connell and Wei Chen - producers think they can brand the show with an increasingly fickle news audience.“I think Canadian public affairs shows in the past have really suffered a little bit by a certain puritanical streak about how public affairs programming is supposed to look,” Clark says.“This year, we sort of looked at (higher production values) and instead of asking why, asked why not.” But that doesn’t mean the show will be fluff and filler, he says.“Every show, by our own internal mandate, will have one big T or one big ‘J’ story, T being investigative, ‘J’ being journalism. It won’t always be the lead, but it will be there.” For W Five, finding the just the right mix is more than merely preferable; it’s a matter of life and death.Halloween Special!!! characterized by simplicity of lines and ruggedness of construction -long after the last Shaker craftsmen have disappeared. The Shakers, or the United Society of Believers in the First and Second Appearance of Christ, were America’s largest communal utopian society with communities stretching from Maine to Kentucky.Founded in 1774 by English woman Ann Lee, the dissident Anglican sect became known as the “Shaking Quakers” for their practice of dancing when possessed by the Holy Spirit.Mother Ann taught the virtues of material and spiritual simplicity, values that echoed in all aspects of Shaker life - from architecture to the construction of everyday objects such as cheese boxes or rocking chairs.Bursey said it was the simple elegance of the Shaker style that first caught his eye.A carpenter by trade, he polished his skills building and finishing houses.Later, he built furniture for J.J.Farmer, work which he summed up as “big production, low-quality.” About 10 years ago, he began making Shaker-inspired furniture.Working from the Stanbridge East workshop that also houses his showroom, Bursey fashions traditional pieces such as the traditional Shaker slat-back chair or rocker topped with onion finials, buffets, slant-top desks and chests of drawers using cherry, basswood and poplar. In a whimsical concession to the French style, he has also constructed a Shaker-style armoire with lines that are clean and crisp.Bursey’s raw materials are locally grown, kiln dried and custom milled.Cherry is his hardwood of choice.“Ninety-nine per cent of customers choose cherry because of the richness and color,” he said.Basswood and white poplar are used as secondary woods, either for contrast or in less conspicuous places such as drawer sides or chest backs.Bucking the common practices of cutting cost by using veneered wood, Bursey uses only solid hardwood boards.Even the backs of pieces are finished so that they may be viewed from all sides.Bursey admits that he has made some concessions to modernity, such as giving up hand dove-tailing in favour of machine-made dovetails. Not all of Bursey’s works are Shaker-inspired.In his showroom sits a chair reminiscent of the early 20th-century Mission style made on commission.“I will make anything for anyone as long as it is of high quality,” he said.Bursey sells his pieces off the showroom floor or builds to order. His buyers are predominantly Canadian, though his works go to U.S.and European customers as well.Local interior design magazines such as Les Idées de Ma Maison have featured his works.Though he once worked with an assistant, Bursey prefers to work alone and the waiting time for a cus- tom-built piece is now eight-to-10 weeks. With the attention to quality materials and hand-finishing, Bursey’s works are not inexpensive, with a slat-back straight chair starting at $325 and more elaborate pieces such as a buffet or sideboard ranging around $3,000.However, comparable prices for “authentic” Shaker furniture range from $500 U.S.to thousands for a straight chair in a market that is rife with fakery. In light of the perils that await the inexperienced antique buyer, a well-built modern piece with a known provenance is a reasonable compromise and an investment for the future. With his reputation now established, the Stanbridge East craftsman said he wants the freedom to do “odder” pieces, unique works that are objets d’art rather than simple household objects. As with a work of art, each piece is now signed by its maker.Time will tell if Gary Bursey’s creations become the next generation’s treasures.• • • • • Gary Bursey's workshop is located at 140 Bunker Road on Route 237 south of Stanbridge East. For further information, call (450) 248-7624.CAROUNE KEHNE/CORRES PONDE NT The Shaker style is characterized by simplicity of lines and ruggedness of construction.:^ Townshipsw eek page 6 October 30-November 5, 1998 RECORD Country Hank Williams boxed set includes everything he ever recorded Danni Leigh’s rookie album shows promise New albums are piling up on my desk and I have a hard time deciding if I should review the new comers or the already-well-established.My best bet is most likely to try and mix them up so no one will be left out.DANNI LEIGH: 29 Nights (Decca) There's a new girl in town and does she ever deserve rave reviews for her first release! Her name is Danni Leigh and she sounds as if she was born singing and recording albums. The Virginia native, co-wrote seven songs on this 10-song album and her writing proves to be promising. For the fans who have been complaining country music in the 90’s is closer to rock and pop - here’s a surprise for you.Danni Leigh is a traditionalist performing 100 per cent pure country music built upon the classic country cornerstone of the 50's.Sometimes her voice reminds us of Tanya Tucker while on other numbers it showcases the retro undertones of the great Jean Shepard. She’s got Terri Clark’s tantalizing swirl and Dwight Yoakam’s swing with the lonesome, honey-drenched flow of her voice on tunes like the title track, “29 Nights”.“29 Nights” is a serene, uptempo ballad that highlights the hope beyond the heartbreak, with lyrics like “a thousand miles, a month of emptiness, a million tears have been dried." The first single released “If The Jukebox Took Teardrops,” is about love gone wrong and easily brings to mind the image of a busy dance floor somewhere in a roadhouse in Texas. The song is already very popular with radio stations everywhere and people are calling in to find out who this great artist is.The young lady is very talented, swinging on honky-tonkers and weeping on the classic, heart-breaking ballads. Most of the material in this new collection is up-tempo, which works well if you’re gonna have a party or listen to it in your car. This is music you can crank-up and enjoy and it is sure to put you in an excellent mood.Leigh chose to cover a Willie Nelson classic entitled “Touch Me,” which she per- COUNTRY Connection Jessie Aulis forms beautifully, her voice becoming a sultry instrument of ultimate heartbreak. The wailing of pedal steel sets the right mood as Leigh borrows Patsy Cline style. If this debut album is any indication, Leigh is bound to become part of the roster of today’s big-name female singers. This is a big time, good time record for new comer Danni Leigh.- T.GRAHAM BROWN: Wine Into Water (Intersound) The range of songs on this album is an exceptional effort from a talented singer with a tight band to the excellent guests and deep, soulful songs that reflect on life’s joys and heartbreaks. The guest list is impressive, including artists such as Delbert McClinton, Lee Roy Parnell, Marty Stuart, Delaney Bramlett, Steve Wariner and Beth Nielsen Chapman. Some of them contribute vocals, others contribute sophisticated guitar licks and songwriter Gary Nicholson co-wrote seven of the 11 tracks. The material on this album showcases a lot of depth and maturity, es- &04tu*tte.tetUoti oil éùtdà.¦¦ « cw • Costume rentals, reserve early • Make-up » • Mascarade accessories • Vast choice of balloons • Hats - flutes - plates - glasses - utensils - tablecloths, etc.• Balloon bouquets 680 King St.E., Sherbrooke (819) 563-6665 pecially on songs such as “A Better Word For Love,” or “Good Days Bad Days.” T.Graham Brown himself refers to this new album as his “grown-up” album, of course the man has been around for a while so every bit of his life-experience counts. The highlight of the album is the gospel-inspired title track, a very personal and deeply moving song inspired by his own battle with the bottle.Brown has been performing it live for years and always got a great response, but this is the first time he has recorded it.It’s a good album to add to your collection but it’s not mainstream enough to make it on the radio.Don’t let this stop you since you might be deeply inspired while listening to it.HANK WILLIAMS: The Complete Hank Williams (Mercury) I guess it would be pretty hard to find a more complete retrospective of Hank Williams career since this boxed-set includes 10 CDs and 225 songs. However, this collection will probably only appeal to collectors and diehard Hank Williams fans.Of course, this collection is rather expensive to buy but it is in a nice package and the accompanying booklets include more than 140 photos, essays, a time-line and quotes from stars like Alan Jackson and Marty Stuart, pop-singer Tony Bennett and rock band R.E.M.’s Mike Mills. The 10 CDs include every known studio recording, every unearthed publishing demo and all the available live tape the native of Mount Olive, Alabama ever recorded over 13 years. This wonderful collection starts with the 68 songs the Country Music Hall of Fame officially issued on Sterling and MGM Records, from “Calling You” in December 1946 to “Please Don’t Let Me Love You,” released in 1953, more than two years after his death at age 29.It includes 10 previously unreleased demos and radio performances Williams recorded while living in Montgomery, Alabama, way before his career took off.The earliest, “Happy Rovin’ Cowboy,” dates back to 1939, when Hank, a young man of 17, appeared on a local radio station. He is a thin-voiced teenager, but he is already showing great confidence. The discs take you through the great music he produced during his short, tortured life: his days on the Louisiana Hayride radio show, his debut on the Grand Ole Opry and most of all his performances on his own radio program, the Health and Happiness show. The title for his show was a little ironic since he found neither. There’s also a spoken radio commercial where Hank hawks his book: How To Write Folk & Western Music To Sell. This intimate look and listen at a man who changed the face of country music forever is complete with this collection and will make you realize how much of an impact his music still has on the music that floods the country market of today. Record October 30-November 5, 1998 page 9 WEEK Man Alive, Country Canada Canadian shows retool to seek new audiences ys/tfsss}?'' TVDATA R.H.Thomson is host of Man Alive, which is moving from its prime-time slot on CBC to Sunday afternoons. After evaluating the ratings and production costs for Country Canada and Man Alive, the network has decided to switch the time slots for the shows, moving Country Canada, hosted by Sandy Cushon, to Wednesday night.By Tony Atherton TVData They are two of the longest-running shows on Canadian TV, each a familiar thread in the fabric of the CBC.Each also commands a loyal, if shrinking, audience. But this season, they’re not where you’d expect them to be.Man Alive, the spiritual compass of Canadian prime time for 32 seasons, has switched places with Country Canada, a program that has addressed the Canadian heartland each Sunday afternoon for 43 seasons. This year, it’s Country Canada in the prime-time spotlight on Wednesdays.Man Alive must be content with Sunday afternoons. The switch is not as surprising as it seems.Though Man Alive is more familiar to most Canadians, viewership for the weekly anthology of spiritual and ethical documentaries has been in decline since the defec- tion of original host Roy Bonisteel in the early ’90s.Last season, hosted by actor R.H.Thomson, its average audience was a meager 320,000 viewers weekly.Country Canada also has seen its audience dip since the specialty channel explosion fragmented TV audiences, but last year, the rural newsmagazine was drawing almost as many people on a Sunday afternoon as Man Alive attracted in primetime. The CBC brass presumably looked at those figures, noted that they employ a larger production staff for the Winnipeg-based farm show than for Toronto-based Man Alive, and decided to make a leap of faith.Man Alive producer Joy Crysdale says her program has returned to its roots in more recognizably religious programming.Crysdale, who also produces CBC’s Venture, says she felt Man Alive had lost its distinctiveness by drifting away from faith-based programming.“It was doing very good documentaries .but they were human journey stories. You wondered why were they on Man Alive; why weren’t they on (CBC’s) Witness or (CBC Newsworld’s) Rough Cuts? Why did they belong here?” Crysdale says she sensed a growing hunger for spirituality.Partly, it was a reflection of her own increasing spiritual curiosity, she explains, but she saw the newspaper articles and magazine cover stories on Buddhism, millennial questing and spiritual awakening and recognized a broader trend that spoke to the traditions of Man Alive.“It was our mandate to be directly, overtly, strongly covering spiritual issues,” she explains.Meanwhile, Country Canada is continuing its evolution, moving away from its roots as a hardcore farm show and spreading its wings. This year, producer Nigel Simms says, the program’s mandate covers “anything beyond the perimeter” of urban Canada. That includes devoting this week’s entire program to the controversial call for a mass culling of snow geese west of Hudson’s Bay.Government biologists say protection programs have been so successful that the snow goose population now threatens the stability of the bird’s environment; others denounce the proposed killing.Simms sees the job of Country Canada and host Sandy Cushon as bridging the gap between the rural and urban experience.“The trick is trying to make sure we don’t alienate our hard-core audiences,” he says.“We still have to maintain the legacy of our mandate. What we try to do is bring an understanding of rural life that urban-based media don’t necessarily have.” Friday 6:00 PM S) D Q O 0) IS News O Le TVA (22) M*A*S*H (29) Judge Judy (R) ED Simpsons (33) NewshourWith Jim Lehrer ES ITN World News f.M 4 Northern Exposure ÇJ2D Jazzman (Part 9 of 10) Worldview MEl»l Wings (R) CE3 World News liljj Dealing With Dogs filin','I Party of Five BS Home Again (R) t'i-lkl Little House on the Prairie Exüü Earth's Garden (R) HO Uh Oh! tiïU Dallas ICkl Off the Record.6:30 PM (D NBC Nightly News O Piment fort B (22) ABC World News Tonight (Q News (29) Mad About You IB Simpsons Bi Nightly Business Report l-t'f l Bluesman (R) IHiMtI Moneyline Newshour ÇÇ3 NWI Business News Pet Project Bid Home Again (R) 1','Hl'I You.Me & the Kids (R) QjQ Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation >Fi:i Sportsdesk.7:00 PM CD CBS Evening News (T) Jeopardy!
