Brome County NEWS Wednesday, September 23, 1998 ROÇH VALLIERES IN£ 514-242-2544 Specialized General Contractor Excavation, publjc and private roads, foundation, drainage, sewage, artificial ponds all sizes,, landshaping, hydraulic hammer (rock breaker), demolition Aggregate, Top soil, VR transport.Work done by hour or by contract The Largest Circulation Weekly in Brome —Missis quoi ‘We’re keeping the farm in the family’ Prices turn bam into maple business By Tanya Tkach Record Correspondent Foster Photographs of the Price family’s barn in Foster that were featured on CFCF-12’s Holiday Season Countryside Images inspired Richard and Judy Price to do something with it.“Seeing it on television put the twinkle in our eyes, so we decided to refurbish it and make it into a single-source maple products outlet,” said Richard.“We’ve put our savings into it and we’re hoping to see it grow into a retirement project.” The couple has created a family business consisting of a sugaring operation located at the back of their house and a maple boutique, which they opened this summer, in the barn offering maple syrup products such as cookies, candies, sugar, butter, taffy and fudge, along with other natural products produced from their farm bush and neighboring farms.The farm was originally settled in 1850 by the William Inglis family, which discovered a deep gravel pit situated behind the house and barn making the land unsuitable for farming.Shortly afterwards, the Canadian Pacific Railway bought the farm for the gravel pit and built a railway spur from the main line crossing the neighboring Durell and Greer farms to access the deposit which was mined until 1920.During the ’20s, the Hazards and the Royeas made a subsistence living on the land which now had a forest and abundant wild-life wetlands.The original barn was destroyed during a hay fire in the mid-’20s and the present barn was dismantled from a farm in South Stukely.In 1941 Robert Price, Richard’s father, bought the 224-acre farm and started a poultry operation which continued until 1964, after which all buildings except the barn were torn down.Since then it was used as a storage facility until the leaking roof caused rapid deterioration and decay of the structure.SEE RED BARN, PAGE 6 ; I Name:.j.I I Address:.I I Telephone No.:.I I Question - Name one song from Man of La Mancha: Record SFEsn\«L)=fe motel j (Création G/tri&tùia Coiffure pour Elle et Lui Wednesday Seniors % off We are now doing MANICURES -Business Hours- • Tues.1 p.m.- 5 p.m.• Wed.9 a.m.- 8 p.m.• Thurs.9 a.m.- 8 p.m.• Fri.9 a.m.- 8 p.m.• Sat.8 a.m.- by appointment REDKEN 5 T H AVENUE NYC page 12 Wednesday, September 23, 1998 Tïrome County News Creek United Church raises $2,400 at Ham Supper community profits in many ways The bottom line reads that the Creek United Church in Foster reaped a net profit of $2,400 from its annual Ham Supper, but is that the true bottom line?So many people contribute to the supper held at the church the second Saturday of September every year.The organizing committee of eight people is led by Ernie and Joy Banks.Bob and Pat Quilliams, Dr.Bud and Lynn Staples and Don and Nancy Seaman make up the rest of the committee.These people constitute the core of a wide circle that encompasses Gail Alsop, not a member of the church, but who volunteered to make the tablecloths that adorned the tables.Ross and Connie Smith did much to prepare the church for the dinner.Doug and May Banks, Nellie Williams, Alice Witcher, Flo Shufelt, Anna and Fred Eichenberger, Susan Allan, along with many other members of the United Church Women, did much to prepare the food, tables and flowers for the big event.Many people around the community volunteered to bake the hams sold by Denis Beaudry, five other volunteers baked the potatoes and many others baked the 75 pies used for dessert at the supper.Donald Wilson acted as the maître d’ to the 308 patrons of this year’s supper.Bob Quilliams supervised the responsibilities of the 20 other volunteers who served as waiters, dish-washers, cashiers, tea and juice servers, as well as the server of coffee, who just happens to be Rev.Burn Pur-don, the minister of the church.Every aspect of this fund-raiser calls together the community.The dinner attracts diners from West Bolton, Brome Lake, Waterloo, Mansonville, Fulford, Sutton, Dunham, Granby, Magog, Brome and visitors from as far away as British Columbia and Alberta.Creek United Church acts as a community center and, as such, it welcomes all people within the surrounding area to come to worship at its Sunday services at 9:30 a.m.The entire congregation of Creek United Church would like to thank each and every person who gave of themselves in any way to help make the 1998 Ham Supper the great success it was.We realize that without each and every personal sacrifice we could not possibly carry off this event.Submitted by Creek United Church 14 St Paul, Knowlton 242-1422 Brigit Paradis Director General INFORMATION 266-7511 809 South Cowansville *20e/
