TALK OF _ TUT?— Townships ¦¦THEim RECORD The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships August 4-August 10, 2000 Uplands compiling directory of traditional artists By Catherine Dean Record Correspondent Lennoxville Fabienne Aubuchon is on the lookout for traditional artists. The eager 21-year-old Bishop’s University student has been hired by Uplands to compile a directory of Eastern Townships Resource People in the field of traditional arts. Thanks to a grant from the Ministry of Culture and Communications of Quebec, professional painters, sculptors, photographers (arguably a traditional art), quilters, embroiderers, potters, stained glass artists, knitters, weavers, artists who teach and their work will be easily accessible. Each artist is interviewed by Aubuchon.A photograph of a representative piece of each artist’s work will head the page.An entire page will be devoted to each Townships artist.Aubuchon is eager to get the word out, so all traditional area artists are included.“Each interview lasts about one hour," Aubuchon explained.“I ask the artists questions about their profile and their works of art, their influences, and where they were educated, briefly." The directory, which will include Web pages, FAX numbers and phone numbers will be distributed free in the area.It will prove an invaluable resource for galleries, museums, cultural centres and schools for the planning of workshops, talks and exhibits. It is slated to be printed in December 2000.Aubuchon, a drama student feels a kinship with the artists.“It works well, because I’m an artist myself,” she said.“My main interest is poetry.1 wanted to get closer to the community of Lennoxville." But Russell also saw the film as the opportunity to focus “on the very real battle between good and evil that we all have to deal with, on some level, every day of our lives.” He’s chatting in his spacious office in Beverly Hills. His desk is piled high with scripts, and his walls are adorned with previous movies he has directed (The Mask) or produced (The Shawshank Redemption). It’s an unexpected setting for a discussion on matters spiritual -but this soft-spoken, bespectacled filmmaker believes such concerns lie at the core of Bless The Child.“Do I believe in evil?Oh yes, but I also believe in the power of good on a supernatural level.” That was the ultimate appeal of this project.“I had never before seen a film in this genre which dealt with genuine good. Most films of this nature are concerned only with the power of supernatural evil. Here we have a reminder that supernatural good can be powerful also.” In the film, opening Aug.11, Kim Basinger portrays Maggie O’Connor, an ordinary big-city hospital nurse whose life is turned upside down when her drug-addicted younger sister (Angela Bettis) dumps her new-born autistic daughter, Cody, on her one Christmas Eve.Cody (Hoiliston Coleman) becomes the daughter Maggie has always wanted, but as she grows older, she starts exhibiting extraordinary powers -from making objects move to healing a fatally injured bird. The forces of evil are determined to harness these powers to their own end, and Cody is abducted by them. The cast also includes Jimmy Smits as a New York cop and former seminarian who’s an expert in ritual homicides and occult crime, Rufus Sewell as a charismatic cult leader, and Sir Ian Holm as a priest with a powerful understanding of satanism.Russell liked the fact that the script offered a strong female protagonist in Basinger’s character, and that there was nothing glamorous about her life; instead she had a middle-class background with whom audiences could easily identify.“This is essentially a woman’s story, and that’s unusual for the genre.Yet the character Kim plays is no shrinking violet. And as an actress she is able to tap some very profound emotions.” From the beginning, he believed Basinger would be right for the role, but doubted she would be interested. He was quickly proved wrong.“I went to Kim as soon as I had a script ready to go, and it was one of the most pleasant first meetings I’d ever had with a star.I wasn’t sure whether she would accept the part.I thought she might consider it a risk, but I needn’t have worried. She wanted to do it.“I think it’s the first film she has done which has nothing to do with the fact that she’s attractive. It has to do with her strength and intelligence." During shooting last year in Toronto, Basinger said she identified with the film on several levels.“First, of course, it’s an incredibly absorbing story that deals with some truly fundamental issues: the war between good and evil and the selflessness of love.I was also attracted because Maggie isn’t a peripheral role. She’s not there just to serve as a love interest or as a helpless victim. She’s a strong woman who is absolutely central to this film.” Russell reiterates that he would never been interested in doing just another movie about the struggle between the forces of light and darkness.“I liked this because it had solid characters.” Because it was so character-driven, he was cautious in his use of visual effects.“I rationed my effects shots to serving the story.” He emphasizes that the film’s supernatural manifestations - for example, ominous flights of dark angels - are “visions” experienced by Maggie as she confronts evil in the world.“The message we wanted to convey is that these demons are always around us, but they don’t manifest themselves until we actually wage battle against them.” Because of the emphasis on character, casting was all important. For example, Smits’s steely integrity made him ideal for the role of the cop.“I’ve been a fan from the first time I saw him. There’s something explosive about the way in which he totally dominates the screen.” Casting the role of the sinister cult leader was even trickier, and Russell ended up hiring British actor Rufus Sewell.“Rufus is an intense actor, and what he does here is marvellous. He had wanted to play a powerful villain’s role, but what made me want to cast him is the fact that he’s equally convincing as a leading man.I needed a villain capable of being unbelievably charming.I needed someone capable of convincing us of his charismatic appeal." Russell says Bless The Child has been testing “like a dream” with preview audiences. He also hopes it finds its place in a season which already has one supernatural hit in What Lies Beneath and which will later be ushering in a restored version of The Exorcist. But he also thinks his film occupies a special niche.“That’s because it operates on two levels - as a very frightening thriller and as a character piece about the power of good.” TALK OF THE Townships — 1 — ' ¦THE» i ¦ ' ¦¦¦' 'I ¦' ¦¦¦¦¦ —— i ¦¦¦ ii «¦ 11 .August 4-August 10, 2000 page 5 Record iS&W BRACELET DAYS Thursday 12-5 & 6-10 Friday Evening Pour l’audace et la performance d’acteur! Au Vieux Clocher de Sherbrooke, jusqu’au 2 septembre.?F un For Everyone ?COUNTY SMOKI BARTON, N/SBFtlVIOIMT U ST 1 6-1 7-1 Q-1 9-20 by V S GREATER SHOWS WEDNESDAY Antique Tractor Pull THURSDAY Lawn & Garden A.T.V.Pull FRIDAY 4x4 Pick-up Pull SATURDAY Imperial Hell Drivers* SUNDAY Gymkhana, The Great Orleans County Demolition Derby 4 & 8 cylinder Afternoons & Evening R C U SM I RKU S 3 shows daily Thursday-Friday SPECIAL FAIR EVENTS Thursday: KIDS’ DAY Bicycle give away Silver coin scrambles FRI: Senior Citizens' Day Special to oldest senior Youth Horse Show Friday-Saturday HARNESS RACING SAT.: Family Day, Grand Cavalcade Horse Show Youth Barn Horse Pulling FREE PARKING (602) 525-3555 THURS.-SUN.: - Beef & Oxen Show - Arts & Crafts - 6-Horse Hitch - Horse Show - Demo.Derby Francophone entertainment in the Townships french connection page 6 August 4-August 10, 2000 TALK OF THE Townships books From novels and biographies to cookbooks and beyond, there's nothing like a good read Settling old scores a little boring Ravels tein by Saul Bellow In fiction, truth and honesty are not the same thing. The truth is relevant to a novel for its fictional tangents, many of which prove more authentic than actual fact. While Saul Bellow has used his own life fictionally to great effect in books like More Die of Heartbreak and The Dean's December, the Nobel prize-winner’s latest book, Ravel-stein, is crushed under the burden of real life.Still, there is much to admire in Ravelstein, the story of Chick and his best friend Abe Ravelstein, a professor of political philosophy - a large man with expansive tastes.Tired of hearing of his friend Abe’s attempts to live beyond his means, Chick suggests that his friend, a well-respected academic, put his knowledge into a book. The book makes Ravelstein a millionaire and he delights in spending money on the finer things in life - suits by Lanvin, neckties by Hermes and Ermenegildo Zegna, linens by Pratesi, meals taken in Paris at the Lucas-Carton and a stay at the famous Crillon in Paris (at the same time as Michael Jack-son and his entourage).Though the author has much fun with Michael Jack-son and his friend’s preposterous fame, he is more serious about Ravelstein, a professor who’s made millions lecturing on Plato and Socrates. The references to the high life become monotonous after a while, though touches like Abe’s atrocious table manners at the home of a snobby Jew-hat-ing couple and some of the banter between the two men works.Where the book really falls down is in settling scores.Bellow himself was married to a well-respected mathematician hailing from Eastern Europe. Some of the parts of the book characterizing Chick’s marriage to the beautiful work-obsessed, ex-wife ‘chaos physicist’ hailing from Eastern Europe Between The Covers Catherine Dean read more like “things I forgot to tell her as she was going out the door” than as fiction designed to illuminate the human condition.Strangely touching is the scene when Chick comes upon his ex-wife Vela marking their separate possessions with coloured squares and triangles.Though people are inordinately petty in real life, the whole Vela-Ravelstein dislike appears foolish and a little boring.Ravelstein later ups the ante, telling Chick that Prof.Radu Grielescu, the husband-in-a-couple with whom Vela likes to spend time, is a Nazi, using Chick for credibility. At this point, one expects Vela to enter on a broomstick wearing a pointy hat. There are certainly enough opportunities on which to build a plot.Ravelstein is stricken with AIDS.Chick struggles to write Ravelstein’s posthumous biography and gets deathly ill on a trip with his new wife to the Caribbean.Perhaps more time should have been devoted to Ravelstein and Chick and not to settling old scores.Ravelstein is crushed under the burden of real life.Saul Bellow Natural home remedies book covers a lot of ground Everywoman ’s Guide to Natural Home Remedies by Sally Freeman In the laboratory, popular folk remedies are undergoing scientific scrutiny.Do the natural chemicals in garlic, certain culinary seasonings, or chicken soup actually have medicinal properties?“Some of America’s leading university research laboratories have confirmed that they do.The newest unit of the National Institutes of Health, the Office of AlternativeTherapies, is one of the major research groups investigating folk medicine along with alternative therapies that include yoga, acupuncture, acupressure, vitamin therapy, and Ayurvedic medicine." Sally Freeman’s updated and revised book about natural home remedies covers a lot of ground: she has separate chapters on the reproductive system, the digestive and urinary systems, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, and more.In only 271 pages, however, there is not enough room for more than a very general explanation of the major problems.Freeman attempts to go through the causes of specific ailments and then explain medical and herbal remedies from around the world. For example, there are five pages devoted to menopause, explaining how problems associated with this complaint depends on the individual and how a woman can take care of herself physically and emotionally.Hot flashes and night sweats are discussed, and various practical suggestions-such as getting enough exercise and proper nutrition, and herbal remedies - alfalfa seeds steeped in boiling water with lemon -are offered.Freeman also includes some interesting anecdotes about herbal remedies. For instance, during World War Two it was observed that pilots who snacked on bilberry jam were more successful at hitting targets at night than other pilots.Bilberry is a European berry similar to the blueberry, but with a different chemical composition. The many benefits of garlic are described - a raw clove tucked in your cheek can prevent a cold, and it also good relieves both diarrhea and constipation. The chapter entitled Emergencies is one of the best quick-reference guides in the book.An ice pack on bee stings reduces pain and swelling, and baking soda neutralizes the acidic bee serum, soothes the sting, and draws out the stinger.First-degree burns can be nursed with the gel from an aloe plant, and the burn can be soothed by applying cold water, not ice, at ten-minute intervals. In Russia, honey is applied to the burned area, and St.John’s wort oil has been found to heal first-degree burns in 48 hours in a clinical study.Eye injuries, fainting, nosebleeds, poison ivy, splinters and more are discussed in the emergencies section. The book contains good resources and a bibliography, as well as an index and an herbal reference that lets you quickly find the benefits of certain herbs. In her introduction, Freeman warns readers that they should see their physician if their symptoms persist and to read labels carefully on herbal products. There is some useful and interesting information about herbs in the book, but it is too general to be an authoritative reference on the subject.Between The Covers Caroline Lacombe TALK OF THE JoWflshipS — ¦ i ¦¦ THE—¦¦ — " ' ¦¦»¦ .— August 4-August 10, 2000 page 7 Gross commands the stage CYLLA VON TIEDEMANN Paul Gross as Hamlet.actor tackles the role with gusto.Reviewed by Sunil Mahtani Stratford, Ont.The Stratford Festival production commanding the most attention this season from both audiences and the media is clearly Hamlet, due to the casting of Canadian heartthrob Paul Gross in the lead role.It is the play and the actor most frequently discussed at Stratford this year, and the number one question posed by all is: Is Constable Fraser of TV’s Due South any good as Shakespeare’s tragic hero? The answer: Yes, and that is a most pleasant surprise.Stratford’s artistic director Richard Monette wasn’t taking any commercial risks by casting Gross as Hamlet. He knew it would be boffo box office playing host to one of Canada’s few Holly-wood-style stars and would also bring in the younger audiences all theatres covet. However, Monette was taking an artistic risk by placing the credibility of a Stratford Shakespearean production squarely on the shoulders of a hunky TV actor. If Gross couldn’t handle it, he wouldn’t be blamed - Monette and the festival would be targeted.Monette must have known something others didn’t.Gross is a sensitive, thoughtful actor who tackles the most difficult role in the English language with verve and gusto. His gamble on Gross has paid off in spades.Any actor playing the Prince of Denmark must prove his mettle within the first few minutes of his appearance in a very difficult scene in which Hamlet is mourning the loss of his father. If audiences don’t buy the actor’s grief, the entire performance is threatened.Gross pulls off this difficult scene well, arriving on stage subtly, almost imperceptibly, then slowly building his performance and taking over the stage.Gross has remarkable presence.Towering above the rest of the cast, he has the stature and the regal handsomeness that serves this princely role well.Gross and director Joseph Ziegler have created a Hamlet that is a departure from the one most often seen.Gross plays him as a much younger man and with a sense of humour. This paints the role far differently than most productions, but it doesn’t take away from the power of the play. This Hamlet is not as sombre or as brooding as most, and that makes him far more accessible to audiences. It is an interpretation clearly designed for Gross and it works. Here, the choices made by Ziegler and Gross reveal a Hamlet that, although deeply disturbed by the death of his father, the king, the speedy remarriage of his mother to his uncle, and ghostly visions of his father telling him he was murdered by said uncle, is not going mad. When Hamlet produces the play-within-a-play recreating the death of his father to reveal the guilt of his uncle, he is ecstatic when it produces the results he’s after. This gives him some comfort, some lucidity. The tragedy is somehow even greater as we see a Hamlet that seems to be gaining some control in his life, yet must inevitably die due to the desires and actions of those around him.The interpretation pays a certain respect to the character that is not always clear in productions of this play. The heightened level of humour may be held up to criticism, but it does not detract from the play. This Hamlet is by no means a comedy. It is still the story of a disillusioned man who is suffering, but by playing him as a younger man, Hamlet’s journey is slightly different, his reactions slightly different.Gross may have less angst than older Hamlets, but his is a valid interpretation that works.Gross is aided by a competent supporting cast, including Benedict Campbell as a suitably stoic Claudius: Domini Blythe as the cool Gertrude: and Juan Chioran, who excels in three roles - the Ghost of Hamlet’s father, an actor who plays the King in the impromptu play and a gravedigger.Designer Christina Poddubiuk’s Gothic arches, and costumes featuring frock coats, ruffled shirts and boots for men, elegant Empire gowns and bonnets for women, evoke the production’s post-Napoleonic setting very well.By taking on the role of Hamlet at Stratford, Gross is among a prestigious group of actors one wouldn’t normally associate him with: Christopher Plummer, Kenneth Welsh, Brent Carver and Colm Feore have all played the role here.By holding his own in arguably the most challenging role in the English language and creating a performance that works, the actor making his Stratford debut can hold his head high among that elite group, proving to audiences and critics there’s more to Paul Gross than previously thought.Hamlet continues in repertory at the Stratford Festival through Nov.5.To order tickets, or for more information about the Stratford Festival’s 2000 SEASON, CALL TOLL-FREE 1-800-567-1600 OR VISIT THE Web site at www.stratford-festival.on.ca.-STRATFORD FESTIVAL Fall Weekend Getaway at the Stratford Festival Win an unforgettable weekend for two at the prestigious festival in picturesque Stratford, Ontario Friday, Oct.27, to Sunday, Oct.29, 2000 • Spend two nights at the Swan Motel relaxing in a tranquil country setting five minutes from downtown. With Colleen and Peter as your hosts, you’ll enjoy a tastefully appointed room, beautifully landscaped grounds with Victorian gazebo and coffee and muffins each morning.• Enjoy the Festival Theatre production of Hamlet, starring Paul Gross of TV’s Due South.See what audiences and critics are raving about.• Tap your toes to the musical Fiddler on the Roof, featuring an inspiring performance by Brent Carver as Tevye.• See Shakespeare’s As You Like It at the Avon Theatre, starring Mansonville native Lucy Peacock.• Take a fascinating guided tour of the Festival Theatre stage, backstage, underworld and production areas.• Walk through theatre history with an eye-popping tour of the Festival’s Warehouse of Costumes and Properties and try on genuine Stratford Festival costumes yourself.• Enjoy a scrumptious gourmet meal at The Sun Room Restaurant, a 16-year tradition at Stratford with Frances Evans as your hostess.• Try international cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere with a meal at Tony’s Bistro, prepared by chef Antony Edwards.• Take a walk on the wild side with the cosmopolitan cuisine at Tapuz. For a chance at The Record’s Stratford Festival weekend getaway, fill out the form below and send your response to Stratford Getaway, The Record, 1195 Galt E., Sherbrooke, JIG 1Y7, or 88 Lakeside, Knowlton, JOE 1V0.No photocopies, faxes or e-mails will be accepted The deadline is Monday, Sept 11, at 4 p.m.The winner will be chosen at random from the correct responses and be the subject of a story in the Townships Week edition of Sept 15.Good luck and good theatre! TALK OF THE Townships Record August 4-August 10, 2000 page 9 TALK 1rid ay Style in the 90s TV DATA In the 1990s, fashion became entertainment. The media suddenly started paying as much - or more -attention to the private lives of people named Naomi, Linda and Gianni as they did to Michelle, Julia and Arnold. So “Celebrity, Sex & Style in the ’90s” is as appropriate a way as any to describe the documentary special Fashion: The Last Decade, airing Saturday, Aug.12, on CBC Newsworld. But there's a more complex story to tell than just the glitz and glamour of the industry. The Last Decade delves deeper and puts the industry in the context of its times.Tim Blanks, who wrote and hosted the special, characterizes the decade as “a bit of a conundrum.” As host of Newsworid’s weekly Fashion File series and fashion editor for Toronto Life magazine for most of the 1990s, Blanks has had a front-row seat to what often looked like the greatest show on Earth. On one hand, he says, “the biggest trend of the decade was minimalism, and that reflected a very conscious effort to reject the values of the ’80s.A lot of the decade, people were keen on paring their lives down, and fashion's appetite for minimalism definitely reflected that.In the '90s, fashion tried to turn its back on the Greed Decade. The ’80s were maximalism; the '90s were minimalism.” At the same time, Blanks points out, fashion was usurping the role traditionally played by movies.During the Depression, Hollywood provided an escape with its glamorous, aloof and mysterious demigods. In the '90s - when movie stars always seemed to come clad in sweat suits and backward baseball caps - the supermodels, such as Canada's Linda Evangelista (pictured), took over.6:00 PM © © O B B IB HD News O Le TVA, édition 18 heures 33 Judge Judy ID Simpsons @3 Newshour With Jim Lehrer Si BBC World News 1 L.A.Law fim Montreal Jazz Festival iH.'i.’t Worldview idL-a Mow'd They Do That?i.t.'i International Newsfirst fTT?T Good Dog!
