TALK OF m THE -I • lownsnips The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships July 14-July 20, 2000 By Rita Legault Orford After a few years of high-profile jobs, including a stint as artistic director of the prestigious Vienna Boys Choir, renowned choral conductor Agnès Grossman answered a call to return to the Orford Arts Center this season.Born in Vienna in 1946, Grossmann began piano lessons with her world-famous father Ferdinand Grossmann, who headed the Vienna Boys Choir and was an acclaimed voice teacher in Austria and Japan. The elder Grossmann was pleased his daughter had inherited his perfect pitch, but he was reluctant to allow her to become a child prodigy. His older stepsister had been a musical genius but under such enormous pressure lost all interest in music, Grossmann explained. His stepmother would not allow her father to study music, she said, but to compensate he drew a keyboard on his windowsill and managed to practice on the silent instrument as he had such an excellent ear.“Sometimes he also sneaked into churches to play the organ.” Grossmann said her father had a terrible childhood and did not want his children to have such a hard life. She described her own childhood, growing up in the countryside outside Vienna, as fantastic. At the age of nine, Grossmann's music teacher insisted on speaking to her parents and explained that she could no longer take responsibility for teaching Grossmann. She would have to attend the music academy. At the tender age of 10, Grossman left for two years of preparatory classes at the Academy of Music in Vienna and went on to Master classes where she studied under famed pianist Bruno Sei-dlhofer.At 17 she received a scholarship to study at the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieure de Musique in Paris under Pierre Sancan, who had also worked at the Orford Arts Center.Grossmann went on to a brilliant and promising career as a soloist and chamber orchestra musician. She received a contract from Columbia Artists Management and toured Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan.“Then one day while I was on tour in the United States, I had a strange feeling in my hand.It was as if 1 did not have any pain, as if I had lost control over my middle finger.” SEE GROSSMAN, PAGES 5-6 conductor returns « à Nlgffc PERRY BEATON/SPECIAL TO THE RECORD New challenges facing Agnès Grossman.she returned to take over the artistic direction of the Orford Arts Center on the eve of its 50th anniversary next year.’ ' - : Fun for kids at Tour des Enfants By Murielle Parkes Record Correspondent Folks taking in the annual Tour des Arts junket may want to enroll their kids in one or more of the enrichment workshops on the Tour des Enfants. The new concept, a brainchild of two Dunkin residents - Joëlle Ganguil-let and Jasmine Larichelière - provides children ages four to 14 with a series of participatory cultural and artistic activities. All workshops take place in a barn adjacent to 230 Ruiter Brook, Dunkin, during this year’s annual Tour des Arts, July 15-23.Each day (or evening) provides children with the opportunity to explore an art form with a different artist or teacher.Participants pay a nominal fee for each workshop, except for storytelling which is free.In some cases, reservations are required.-July 15,16, Art Workshop for ages 4-14 with Laura Bari, pre-school teacher.9:00 a.m.to noon.Fee: $4.00; -July 16, Storytelling for Youth (around a bonfire during a full moon), with Michéle Rousseau.Participants bring stories, poems and instruments.8:00 pan.to 10:00 p.m.Free.-July 17-18, Mime Workshop for ages 8-14 with Denise Boulanger.9:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m.Fee: $15.00 for the two days.Reservations are compulsory.-July 19, 20, Percussion workshop for ages 4 to 14 with Caravane - a troupe of puppeteers and percussionists.2:00 p.m.to 4:00 p.m.Fee: $2.00.- July 20, Mask Making workshop for ages 4 to 14 with Caravane - mask making and parade.9:30 a.m.to noon.Fee: $2.00.- July 21, Fable, Music and Puppet show for ages 4 to 14 with l’Atelier du Conte en Musique et en Images Inc.2:00 pan.to 3:00 pm.Fee: $2.00.For information and reservations, phone Joëlle Ganguillet (450) 292-3178 or Jasmine Larichelière, (450) 292-8966. TALK OF THE Townships ———————— ¦— THE win ———— page 2 July 14-July 20, 2000 RECORD mr\ Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships Pot-Pourri choir brings music to Townships CAROLINE KEHNE/CORRES PONDENT The Pot-Pourri Choir, under the direction of Susan Reininger, averages 15 females and three males.By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Mansonville With all the hype surrounding the Tour des Arts, it is easy to forget how many musicians now call the Eastern Townships home. The many classically trained musicians who settle in the region are transplanting the seeds of an urban musical tradition.Susan Reininger, director of the Brome-Missisquoi region’s Pot-Pourri Choir, has brought her McGill training and 16 years of experience in central Europe to aspiring singers from Cowansville to Mansonville.Reininger received a Bachelor of Music degree in orchestral direction from McGill University in 1973.Following graduation, she taught music and in a small town in Hungary until 1995.There, she taught in a school with a “music enriched” program that was part of a national system established after World War II by the Hungarian scholar-composer Zoltan Ko-daly.During this time, she studied choral conducting and theory and frequently competed internationally.“The only way to get out of the country (under the old communist system) was to be a choir singer or an athlete,” recalls Reininger.“As a singer, you got to breathe the air of other countries.” In the summer of 1995, she returned to Canada and learned of the search for a new choral director for the Pot-Pourri Choir, previously under the direction of John Purdy. In 1996, she took over the reins. The choir averages 15 female singers and three male singers, many of whom have little or no previous musical training or experience. The singers drive from throughout Brome-Missisquoi to a central rehearsal point at Knowlton Academy where, every Thursday evening from September through November and February through June, they rehearse for an hour and a half. For new members, there is no audition and sight-reading of music is not required.Reininger said that she has never turned a singer away, and in fact, she is desperate for male singers, who seem difficult to come by.John Ballantyne, a baritone and 8-year veteran of the Pot-Pourri Choir says that it is not easy being one of three male voices amidst 15 females.“It’s a little awkward: you have to know your music very well; there’s no place to hide," he says.He has an opinion on why men are reluctant to sing in choirs: “It’s pretty much the same over the world. It's a perception on the part of males that it is not a virile thing to do.Out here in the country, it’s even worse, it’s just not part of the culture.” Ballantyne adds that the choral director has resisted suggestions to simply turn the Pot-Pourri Choir into an all-female choir, remaining optimistic that someday local men’s attitudes, given time and exposure, might change. The group performs a variety of choral works, including early Gregorian chants, music of the Renaissance and more modern genres. In a recent concert in Cowansville, the group performed a program that covered a four-century span of music, from the Renaissance chansons of Orlando di Lasso and John Dowland, to Baroque works by J.S.Bach and finally, to the Lieder of Johannes Brahms. As a choral director, Reininger is not afraid to push her singers.“She demands a lot and we try to give it to her,” says Ballantyne.Despite the hard work, the choir is not all work and no play.Camaraderie is an important aspect of practice. After each rehearsal, group members meet for a quick beer before heading for home and as a result, it is a close-knit social group whose friendships and spirit of assistance extend beyond practice sessions.“We like to try to put on concerts twice a year at Christmas and in summer, but this has been a busy year,” says Reininger. This summer, she is serving as music director for a production of Cinderella being performed in Barton, Vermont as well as teaching at a music camp in St- Choral director Susan Reininger shares a laugh with her singers during a rehearsal for a recent concert.T>iiiT»firynrwiffl • t-t— - Lambert. She is also the church organist at the Emmanuel United Church in Cowansville. The Pot-Pourri Choir’s summer concert, a program entitled “Girls’ Night Out,” will take place at 8 pm at Arts Sutton at 7 Academy Street in Sutton. The concert, produced in conjunction with Tour des Arts, will feature Belgian, English and French-Canadian folksongs. The repertoire will include poems from France Mangeau, Liz Davidson and the late Dena Goldberg set to music by Susan Reininger. The concert is free but good-will donations to benefit a local charity will be accepted.CAROLINE KEHNE/CORRES PONDENT For new members, there is no audition and sight-reading of music is not required. the Canadian Chamber Ensemble; the National Arts Center Orchestra in Ottawa; the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, the Arcadia Orchestra and Choir and the Osaka Philharmonic in Japan, as well as the Salzburg Mozar-teum Orchestra and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra in her native Austria. At the start of her career in Vienna, Grossmann had few opportunities to conduct, so when a call came through from a pianist she had worked with offering her a job with the University of Ottawa choir, she took a leave of absence and accepted the new challenge.“For the first time I was not only preparing concerts for guest conductors but I was also conducting them and for Agnes Grossmann that was fantastic.” Grossmann returned to Vienna in 1983 to continue teaching and conducting.During this time she worked with all the great choral conductors, but she did very few concerts of her own. Then she got another call - this one from the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montreal.“I knew it was a risk, because I would be losing job security, but I said I have to make music and I will go.” Grossmann was eventually appointed artistic director of the Orford Arts Center in 1990, but in 1995 she resigned from both jobs to spend more time on her international guest conducting career. However, in 1996, an opportunity arose she could not turn down.Gross-man was invited to lead the internationally renowned Vienna Boys Choir on the eve of its 500th anniversary. The boys choir, which was founded in 1948 by Emperor Maximillian I, had a stellar reputation and a turnover of $5 million a year. But it was undergoing an artistic and public relations crisis. The choir was accused of mistreating the young singers, who faced draconian discipline, austere living conditions and a stressful concert schedule.Despite living in a palace, the young choir boys lead a tough and demanding life. The choir functions like a strict boarding school, with exacting study and rehearsing schedules. The young boys, aged nine to 14, have a gruelling schedule, performing in about 100 concerts a year in Austria, throughout Europe and overseas.CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE page 6 July 14-July 20, 2000 TALK OF THE Townships them Record b stage ¦fit Double bill in Stanstead QNEK Productions will be presenting a special benefit Double-bill performance on Saturday and "Sunday evenings, July 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m.Act 1 is Love Letters, a two character play, written by A.R.Gurney, author of The Dining Room, The Cocktail Hour, and The Middle Ages. The two actors are husband and wife duo Phil Desormeaux and Kim Prangley of Ogden, Canada.A unique and imaginative theatre piece which in the words of the author “needs no theatre, no lengthy rehearsal, no special set, no memorization of lines and no commitment from its two actors beyond the night of performance.” this is a piece of theatre that you will not forget.it will grab you emotionally.Act 2, The Lullaby of Broadway, pro- vides the musical segement of the evening.Accompanied by the dynamic and versatile Mark Violette, Kim Kyle Waters visits the stage of the Haskell Opera House and sings about “love.” From Mozart to Sondheim. This powerful soprano will dazzle the audiences as in days gone by.Waters is originally from Newport and now hails from the Great White Way, New York City. Many will remember her stunning talent, and should know the Northeast Kingdom has truly missed her splendid voice.Call 802-334-8145 for ticket reservations, or you can purchase them at the Woodknot Bookshop in Newport.Price is $10 US and $12 CAN.No discounts. This is a benefit and performers are donating their talent.Submitted by QNEK Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships Boogie-woogie at the Haskell America’s top ragtime/boogie-woogie pianist Bob Milne will present his fourth annual concert at the Haskell Opera House in Stanstead, on Saturday, July 29.This year’s concert is called “A Night in the Barrelhouse.” Milne performs for theater and performing arts center audiences from coast to coast as a full-time touring artist. In recent newspaper reviews, he was referred to as “the finest ragtime/boogie-woogie pianist on this planet” and “one of the greatest ragtime pianists ever." TALK OF THE Townships ¦ THEm Record July 14-July 20, 2000 page 7 A world of adventure, comedy and drama awaits movies X-Men mystique amazes actor Hugh Jackman is Wolverine in X-Men.SOUTHAM By Jamie Portman Southam News It took an encounter with a Canadian customs agent at Toronto’s Pearson Airport to make Hugh Jackman appreciate the true nature of the X-Men phenomenon. When the Australian actor’s plane landed in Toronto, he had yet to nail down a role in the new movie version of the legendary Marvel Comic series about a formidable group of mutants with extraordinary powers. Then, on his way to his final audition for the part of Logan, a.k.a.Wolverine, the morose loner who’s an extraordinary fighting machine thanks to retractable metal claws and amazing healing capabilities, Jackman found himself confronting a customs agent who turned out to be an X-Men fanatic.“It was my first window into the fans of X-Men,” Jackman says by telephone from New York.“There was a guy in a very packed customs hall stamping passports and asking the same boring old questions. When I turned up, he asked me what my business was and I said I was having a meeting with the director of X-Men.Well, he put down his pen, looked me straight in the eye, and said: ‘WHAT do you mean?’” Jackman explained he was an actor and auditioning for a role in an X-Men movie. At that point the customs inspector started yelling excitedly to his friends: “They’re making a movie of X-Men here in Toronto!” The normal decorum of the customs hall was further upset when Jackman explained he was auditioning for the role of Wolverine.“Wolverine -that’s my favourite character!” exclaimed the customs guy as he shoved a piece of paper at Jackman., “Sign this for me.” “I’m only auditioning,” Jackman protested.“You don’t want to jinx it for me.” “I don’t care, man,” the customs agency responded.“Sign this.” So Jack-son, wanting to make sure he got into the country, obeyed.“It’s the best reception I’ve ever had going into any country, including my own,” he laughs.“And it was the first time I became really aware of the X-Men cult.” He became even more aware in the days ahead. After meeting director Brian Singer (The Usual Suspects) in Toronto, he was confirmed in the role and returned to Los Angeles where a visit to his agent at the Creative Artists Agency caused pandemonium."Pretty much the whole operation stopped when I walked through the door.Guys were yelling “Wolverine!” down the hall. One senior executive halted a high-level meeting to come out to congratulate me.It suddenly dawned on me how big a role this really was and how hotly it had been sought after.” The 31-year-old actor won the role after a 10-month audition process that began while he was in London, singing the role of Curly in the Royal National Theatre’s production of Rogers and Ham-merstein’s Oklahoma. That was when he was asked to do a couple of tests on tape.At one point, he wasn’t even the producers’ first choice for a role: they were looking at Dougray Scott who later faced a conflict because of prior commitments to Mission Impossible 2.Later, when Jackman moved to the front of the line, the boss of Marvel Comics took him aside to emphasize what he was getting into: “This is probably 10 times bigger than Superman, Batman or Spiderman.X-Men is huge and your character is the most popular.” The message is clear. If X-Men is a success when it opens July 14, it could make Jackman - who resembles a rugged younger version of Clint Eastwood - into a star overnight.Wolverine is only one of the characters with remarkable talents.Cyclops (James Marsden) has eyes that can release an energy beam capable of ripping holes through mountains.Storm (Halle Berry) can manipulate the weather.Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) has both telekinetic and telepathic powers.Rogue (Anna Paquin) is an alienated teenager who absorbs the powers and memories of anyone she touches. All are children of the atomic era.All have been bom with genetic mutations that give them these unique powers. And all are being victimized by a social and political culture that fears them as dangerous freaks of nature. The enlightened Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is a powerful telepath who sees these mutants as forces of good capable of harnessing their powers for the benefit of mankind. His arch enemy is Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a.Magneto (Ian McKellen), a powerful mutant who has turned his back on society: instead of working for a world in which mutants and ordinary humans coexist, he seeks one in which the mutants will dominate.Magneto has enlisted some terrifying re- cruits.Among them Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) a lethal creature capable of metamorphizing into all manner of shapes and identities, and the gargantuan Sabretooth (Tyler Mane). But Jackman concedes that Wolverine can be pretty terrifying himself, thanks to those blade-like claws that can thrust their way out of his arms.Special effects supervisor Gordon Smith created 15 different sets for Jackman to wear - some plastic or metal, some flexible and manufactured from hard rubber, some computer-generated.“They had various degrees of maiming ability that I never really trusted myself with,” chuckles Jackman.“The rubber ones ensured I didn’t cause real damage to my colleagues.I also had a fake arm so the claws could pop out.” Jackman agrees with producer Lauren Shuler Donner’s description of Wolverine as a “truly tragic hero.” “As an actor you can look at him and say - yeah, he really is tragic, although Wolverine himself would never admit to it.He’s a very lonely private guy with no sense of history or the past. And being feared and ostracized by society would make anyone pretty angry and bitter.I wanted to make sure audiences saw a kind of melancholy about this man.No matter how cool and unfazed he seems, there’s a real well of despair underneath, a well of loneliness.” The actor didn’t expect to feel such a tremendous burden of responsibility in playing this role.“There are two kinds of role I always considered toughest for an actor. The toughest would be to play someone who was alive and famous. The second hardest, I would have thought, would be to play the great traditional roles - the Hamlets and the Macbeths.I now realize that when you’re playing someone like Wolverine, you’re dealing with the imagi- nations of millions of people who have already seen this movie and this character in their heads. So it is a great responsibility, maybe even greater than the two I’ve already mentioned. But at the end of the day, the fans also want to love the film. They want to see it, and it’s always nice for an actor to know the audience is on your side.” Jackman has done film in his native Australia, but X-Men is not just his first American movie - it is his first encounter with a summer Hollywood blockbuster -even though it was filmed in Toronto to save money.“It’s definitely another world. My first day on set it was like going to a Rolling Stones concert. It was an outdoor shoot at night, there were huge banks of lights and about 400 cast and crew members. Then, when I was ushered into my trailer, my first reaction was that it was bigger than my home back in Australia.” 13:00» 15:30 «19:00 «21:35 LA VIE APRES L'AMOUR 13:00 • 15:30 • 19:00 • 21:35 LA TEMPETE (6 d«on.aux j.«niants) 12:30 • 15:30 • 18:40 • 21:30 LES AVENTURES DE ROCKY & BULLWINKLE (G) 13:00*18:30 MOI, MOI-MÊME ET IRÈNE (13* langag* vulgaire) 15h35* 21:30 12:40 • 15:40 • 18:40 • 21:30 ORIGINAL ENGLISH VERSION AND FRENCH VERSION EEH a film by BRIAN SINGER ORIGINAL ENGLISH VERSION AND FRENCH VERSION AISStl PASSER REFUSES € 1 II G HA Hi 4204, boul.Bertrand-Fabi 9 Theatres E>içj11aI Sound Curved Sere en h -
