TALK OF THEr .lownsnips The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships May 19-May 25, 2000 Artist’s work is written in stone Birks was first customer By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent St-Armand St-Armand resident Johanne Mallette is an artisan who has found her place in the world.Working in an interior porch that serves as a studio in her tiny house on the St-Armand road, the 40-something sculptor transforms pieces of soapstone into decorative art that is sold to private and commercial buyers across Canada.Mallette said that she has never studied art.Her take on her on gift is that ‘God liked me’.She describes herself as someone who was never outstanding in school or anything else, for that matter, until she stumbled into carving. Her career as an artisan began when she studied woodcarving with Jean-Jacques Bertrand of Philipsburg.Bertrand, now deceased, taught Mallette how to work with wood, how to visualize the work inside.“Then I discovered soapstone and saw how easy it was to carve,” she said, displaying the array of hand tools that she employs to bring the Thetford soapstone to life.“I heard somebody say that T don’t carve; I just take the excess off,” she said while slowly whittling away chips of soapstone from a large, triangular slab that will one day be a loon. With no formal art training, Mallette sees herself as fortunate for having discovered an inner talent that she could develop with ease. The beauty of soapstone is that it is an easy material with which to work.If diamonds have a ‘hardness index’ of 10, then marble ranges from 3 to 7 and soapstone, from one to two.SEE MALLETTE, PAGE 4 CAROUNE KEHNE/CORRESPONDENT Johanne Mallette displays one of her pieces at her home in St-Armand.Open Stage with Robert Atyeo Singer-song-writer Robert Atyeo is hosting a series of Wednesday night Open Stages at the Cliff House Pub in Ayer’s Cliff. The concept gives new performers an opportunity to test their performing abilities in a relaxed but professional setting. Each evening’s show starts off with a 45-minute set from Atyeo, who recently moved to the Knowlton area from Peterborough Ontario.Following this initial set from Atyeo, who has three albums to his credit, musicians who have signed up for a given night will receive their chance to play three or four songs.Atyeo’s sound system will be at their disposal and he is prepared to provide advice on the onstage presence or musical delivery for those who are interested in benefiting from his many years in the music business. The Cliff House offers a free drink to each performer and, along with Atyeo, encourages anyone with a yen to perform as well as friends, family and acoustic music fans to come out to support the Wednesday Open Stage shows. The Wednesday Open Stage evenings take place at the Cliff House Pub of the Auberge Ayer’s Cliff, 1087 Main Street in Ayer’s Cliff. There are just two more left, on May 24 and 31.There is no door charge although the hat is passed around to help pay for the cost of bringing Atyeo to the Cliff House. The Open Stage will begin at 7:30 and will run until approximately 11 p.m.¦4367 Bourque Blvci.ROCK FOREST Tel.: (819) 564-1600 /Mf THIS MONTH'S AT TEA Automatic • All wheel drive 165 hP engine • A/C • AB5 • electric group ind more /month ¦48 months.$3295.down.Taxes, license and insurance extra.20,000 kirtyear ,08«/km excédent.Valid lo May 31,2000 on in-stock vehicles.Subject to credit approval.lusgmqj?IL 7BIE AUTO $ 339 BE CENTRE talk of imTownships page 2 May 19-May 25, 2000 record: Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships 15,000 performances over three days! Au-rand Harris' adaptation, based on the classic Greek myth, epitomizes all the virtues found in community-based volunteer organizations: Vision, dedication, co-operation, passion, commitment, sacrifice and devotion to the greater good. The Knowlton Players has been cultivating amateur theatrics in the Town of Brome Lake for more than 10 years and has in that time made positive contributions to many organizations within the community. Also, the farce is a modern variation of the Commedia dell'Arte style which emerged in the 16th-century, satirizing the human condition. The plays were staged throughout the villages and towns of Italy by strolling troubadours in masks and bright costumes. The dialogue and action was improvised around a given scenario. The tradition continues in our marketplace - the Knowlton Pub Playhouse - with our troubadours - the generous and enthusiastic Knowlton Players. The fable tells the tale of Androcles La M a son de la (Culture de Waterl oo presents (Darleen Bell), a kindly slave who runs away from his miserly master, Pan-talone (Roger de la Mare at his malevolent best). In the forest, Androcles comes upon a ferocious lion with a thorn in his paw.He overcomes his fear of the 'roaring beast1 (played with gusto by Jason West-over) and removes the thorn, turning the fiend into a 'pussycat' and friend for life.As Androcles disentangles himself from an untenable situation with the help of his new ally, he manages, as well, to liberate the young lovers Isabella and Lelio (Marty Carbonneau and Julie Collins) from the loudmouth Captain (Laura Boisvert-Marsh).Also appearing and adding to the general mayhem were musicians Sidney Brouillette and Barry Dywer, and acrobats Maria Goodman, Sasha Laurent and Joanne Watson. The director, Christopher Freeman, for the most part kept control of the non-stop action and enthusiastic voices.Slavery, corporal punishment, man's inhumanity to man - the stuff of nightly newscasts hardly seems fare for families. However, the Knowlton Players takes these themes and wraps them in such a way as to make them digestible and great fun, which is, after all, the 'raison d'etre' of fable (to educate and courtesy knowlton players entertain) and a tribute to the strolling The Knowlton Players takes weighty themes and wraps them in such a way as to make them minstrels of this community.digestible and great fun.PROGRAMS TOTAL HOURS SCHEDULE START END Accounting 1350 8:30 to 3:20 September 18,2000 September 14, 2001 Home Care and Family and Social Assistance 960 8:30 to 3:20 August 31,2000 May 7,2001 Machining Technics 1800 8:00 to 3:50 August 31,2000 October 18,2001 Professional Sales 900 8:30 to 3:20 August 31, 2000 April 23, 2001 Secretarial Studies 1485 8:30 to 3:20 August 31, 2000 October 5,2001 Starting a Business 330 8:30 to 3:20 September 18,2000 December 6, 2000 Welding and Fitting 1800 8:00 to 3:50 August 31,2000 October 18,2001 Beef Production, Location: Coaticook 1245 8:15 to 3:30 August 21, 2000 June 15,2001 Dairy Production, Location: Coaticook 1245 8:15 to 3:30 August 21, 2000 June 15,2001 CENTRE DE FORMATION PROFESSIONNELLE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION CENTRE LENNOXVILLE CAMPUS Eastern Townships School Board 2700, Route 108 East Lennoxville (QC) J1M2A2 Vocational Educat on Courses Starting in the Fa 12000 Don’t delay - Register now, while places are still available! available! Successful harvesting of the fungi is the first step in creating the art, and Drew says she has had the good fortune of finding people who keep a watchful eye for prime growths.“I have never picked one myself in 12 years, but people always bring them to me.For some reason when people see them they think of me, I don’t know if that’s good or bad,” she said.Once she has thhe fungi, she begin the lengthy process of drying it out.“The drying process takes the most time since the fungi have to dry for a good year.I suppose you could try to use it earlier but I want to make sure they are well dried so that the paint will adhere nicely to the surface and not sink in.” Drew says the fungus shrinks during the drying process, so if it’s painted too soon the picture will also shrink, creating a new and distorted image. They are surprisingly heavy when they aren’t dry making moving them a bit of a chore to move around.Drew says they lose a lot of weight as they dry.Certain trees produce better fungus and dry quicker.Hardwood trees, she says, are the best while birch trees do not produce good fungus for artwork.Drew says that she is thankful for the help of husband Donald who cuts the fungi so that they stand firmly to display the murals.Once the surface is sufficiently dried the transformation from fungus to objet d’art begins.Sometimes the inspiration is her own and in other instances, it is a commissioned work. The texture, size and form of the fungus often dictate the kind of work.“First you have to carefully map out what you can do because there is not one fungus that is the same.- they have bumps and other infirmities that you have to be able to work with,” Drew says.“Once I had one that had a stone directly in the middle of it.When you first see that, well, you wonder what you can do with it.Luckily I had visited Scotland and associated the rock with its rugged beauty so I turned that fungus into a reminder of Scotland.I went out and bought a little sheep and put it on the rock.” Like any art work, it takes a lot of imagination and planning.“I’ve done scenery and wild animals but I also do whatever it is that people would like me to try.” Drew says a person who owns a farm once asked her to paint a picture of his house and animals, on his land.Of course that takes quite a bit of time but I did my best.“ “Another couple took a fungus off an old tree on their property, brought it to me and asked me to paint a portrait of their house on it.I was pleased that I was considered to do this project since it was their own tree and I created something they could keep.” Once painting or portrait is complete, a signature and varnishing is the last step.Drew admits she isn’t sure how long the fungus will last and she is very honest with her customers on this subject.“I tell everyone that I can’t guarantee they will last forever but I know they last a long while since I saw one that my mother had painted 40 years ago and it is in the excellent condition,” she said.Of the 300-400 that she has done she is exceptionally proud of the large painting of Scotland she did on a 20-inch fungus that clearly illustrates her eye for detail and fine craftsmanship. The work, frequently featured as the piece de resistance at exhibitions, is chalk full of detail which tell fairy tales in your head. For instance a piper, castle, running creeks and highland cattle can set your mind racing.“I only go to one craft show, the one at the big red barn or Uplands I guess it’s called now.I only go to that one since at every craft show I go home with orders and I don’t want to get behind and not be able to make them in a respectable time period.” Drew says that she does not do it for a living but simply for the pleasure she gets in doing them.“If I did this for money I wouldn’t get too far, I don’t make them expensive so that people can enjoy them, I go by the price of the paint and how long it takes me to finish them,” Drew said.“To be honest I enjoy painting on the fungus but I find it a lot more difficult than painting on a canvas,” she said modestly while glancing at lifelike portraits she painted for herself of her grandchildren that could very easily pass as photos.Drew is already busy preparing orders, but is looking forward to the next craft show at Uplands which is usually held near Thanksgiving.Getting ‘Plugged In!’ Hosts Walter Trudeau and Marissa Tessier will be presenting segments on the winners of the public speaking contest at E.T.S.B; Townships author G.Boudreau; and Philippe Roy, recipient of an artificial hip on Plugged In! next week. The show airs on Vox, the community station on Cable 10 in the Sher- brooke and Lennoxville area, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday at 9:30 p.m., Thursday at 5 p.m., Friday at 6:30 p.m.and Saturday at 8 p.m.Visit the station’s Web site at www.canalvox.com for more information.Plugged In! can also be found on Co-geco Cable 3 twice weekly. it’s her first movie appearance in years. He also brought back such tried and tested members of the Allen acting stable as Tony Darrow and Michael Ra-paport to portray two inept bank robbers.By Jamie Portman Southam News ‘Lambs’ sequel to be released without Foster Director Ridley Scott says he’s still surprised that Jodie Foster backed out of the sequel to Silence Of The Lambs. But as Scott plunges into the filming of Hannibal in Italy with Julianne Moore taking over the role of Agent Clarice Starling, he also insists that the project was never in jeopardy because of Foster’s action.“It would have never happened that the sequel would not go through without her - not in this business,” says Scott. In other words, there was too much money at stake.Scott, whose current Gladiator is cleaning up at the box office, thinks there are two reasons why Foster finally refused to do the new project. One is that she had received the green light to direct a new movie and because she had been waiting to do it for a long time, it had higher priority for her than Hannibal.Secondly, Scott is convinced Foster didn’t want to do a sequel anyway.“But it was still an amazing decision for her to make,” he adds.“After all, she could have been done and through with our film by August.” On the other hand, Scott admits there would have been a serious problem if Sir Anthony Hopkins had refused to reprise his Oscar-winning characterization of cannibalistic killer Dr.Hannibal Lecter.More than a year ago, during filming of Titus, Hopkins told reporters he was depressed and fed up over his acting and intended to quit.Scott suggests Hopkins had good reason to be depressed at the time: the veteran actor had just starred in the disastrous Meet Joe Black.“Tony’s crisis came at the end of a lot of bad decisions. He’d done a lot of movies that he probably did-n’t like.He probably looked at them and said: ‘Oh my God! What am I doing?’” Scott says Hopkins fell prey to the malaise of all artists who are so anxious to work that they make poor choices.“We all like to work. It’s hard sitting around, waiting for good material. You have to be be 780^ page 8 TALK OF THE Townships May 19-May 25, 2000 NP0538100 SAVE 7 'Winter Romance' sofa.Sears reg.1349.99.999.99 Matching pieces and custom OPTIONS ALSO ON SALE.SALE PRICE ENDS Sunday, May 28, 2000.SAVE s350 as°s SMMflRM King Koil SPECIAL PI IRCHASE 'VeRSAILLE*.POCKET-COIL SLEEP SET.PlLLOW-TOP OR NON PILLOW-TOP CONSTRUCTION Twin King Se 499.99-1199.99 While quantities last 'Sr*' Some items may have been on sale during the past week.or use your Sears Card and dont pay for one full year on all furniture1 and sleep sets.* * Sherbrooke Sears furniture & appliances store BOULEVARD DE PORTLAND 220 CARREFOUR L'ESTRIE ¦u tit; N RUE DES CHÊNES t 3350 BOULEVARD DE PORTLAND, SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC.PHONE: (819) 564-3010 furniture appliances store coordinated furniture Canada's largest selection of major appliances “SAVE 7%’ offer Sears will deduct 7% from the item price.Offer does not apply to purchases made under tax exempt status.Offer does not apply to delivery, maintenance agreement or installation charges.Offer ends Sunday, June 4,2000.“‘Don’t Pay’ offer Don’t pay until May 2001, on approved credit, with your Sears Card.Minimum $200 purchase. All applicable taxes and charges are payable at time of purchase.Offer ends Sunday, June 4,2000.Ask for details. Both offers: Apply to furniture1 and sleep sets in Sears Furniture, Sears Furniture & Appliances and Sears Furniture, Appliances & Home Improvements Stores.Exclude Catalogue purchases.tD/601 Furniture Shop; excludes baby and patio furniture in our Sears Retail Mall stores Copyright 2000.Sears Canada Inc.
