in the play-within-a-play, I’m an uppercrust gentleman with a strong British accent while Billie, my other character, is the kind of guy who’s never put a suit on in his life.” Most of the cast have been coming back year after year and the camaraderie shows in the rehearsal chatter and excitement.“I love your cleavage,” someone shouts at Maureen Cameron, Lady Margaret in the mystery, who sports an extensively padded, rustling black satin 1890s-style evening dress.Cameron explains it was originally designed for a man when the Georgeville Revue began 12 years ago.“The Revue was basically a talent show made up of different skits, ranging from dancing to singing — the community got together and put on a two-hour show and the money raised was for the community association,” added Dickerson.“But the troupe felt there was a need for a change, and we decided to do a full-length play.Our first year, six years ago, we did The At- tempted Murder of Peggy Sweetwater.” This year’s play was chosen by consulting director Lucy Hoblyn whose parents, John and Sarah, both appear in the production.Hoblyn played the maid in a Knowlton Players four years ago and her husband, Danny McCauley, directed the Georgeville Troupe’s first three plays.Monique Saint-Pierre is this year’s director.Some of the parts on stage are played close to life.Tammy Seale, director of last year’s Spooks, plays the director in Play On, while Michelle Otto, the stage manager last year, plays the role of stage manager.Most of the props are donated or on loan, but the troupe was able to pur- chase a curtain for their stage from last year’s proceeds.“We put a bit of the money back into the group,” said John Hoblyn.“But the rest goes to the community centre.” • • • • • There are just three performances of the Georgeville Troupe’s Play On: A 2 p.m.matinee on Saturday, May 6, and 7 p.m.showings on both Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7.Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children, available at the door before the performance or can be reserved by calling the Georgeville General Store at 819-843-2417.All performances are at the Murray Memorial Hall. present country singer Bill McMurray and First Stone Cast, to be followed up by Hooked on Bluegrass.For this Friday night’s performance at the Church Street Café, McMurray has assembled a group of excellent musicians from across the Townships map.Hailing from Victoriaville himself, McMurray will be calling in Terry Howell from Island Brook to play fiddle, Larry Comeau from Granby to play dobro, Jules Fradette from Marieville to play banjo, Serge Robichaud from Sherbrooke to play lead guitar, and our own Perry Beaton of Lennoxville to play stand-up bass.And then the original, world famous Hooked on Bluegrass, a band comprised of six very talented musicians who spent many hours picking bluegrass tunes together before even thinking of forming a band.The band’s fearless leader, Gordon Cameron, continues to be the heavyweight backbone, 5-string banjo picker Windy Weekend DAVID ANDERSON/CORRESPONDENT Members of the Knowlton Harmony Band are tuning their instruments in preparation for two annual spring fund-raising performances.The 30-member band under the baton of Roger de la Mare will perform a program of pop, classical and traditional marches on Saturday May 6 at 8 pm and a Sunday matinee performance on May 7 at 2 pm at the Knowlton Pub Playhouse.The group hopes to raise $500 for the student program that provides musical education at Knowlton Academy.The fund-raiser program will include works by composers as varied as Maurice fané, Richard Rogers, Hoagie Carmichael and Gustav Holst.Tickets for the May 6 and 7 fund-raisers are available at the door.For others.Thomas Kilbride, better known as Tommy Kilowatt (because of his lifelong vocation as an industrial electrician) plays solid rhythm guitar and sings lead on many good old-time country and bluegrass tunes.Ernie Schumacher was forced into playing mandolin because the band already had four guitar players, and Cameron can’t play banjo and mandolin at the same time (though Lord knows, he has tried).Ernie sings lead on many of his own tunes and just looks good on stage the rest of the time.And then Terry Howell, the Cookshire Haygrinder (from Island Brook) will be back up on stage, scraping that fiddle in his own inimitable and fine style.Larry Comeau will be back up also, playing dobro, guitar, and singing lead and harmony.Larry’s roots go back to picking bluegrass tunes with his father and friends in New Brunswick.Perry Benedik will round out the band with his solid bass rhythm, so important to bluegrass music.The music will begin at 8 p.m.at the Church Street Café, located in the Gertrude Scott Hall of Lennoxville United Church, corner of Queen and Church in the heart of Lennoxville.Coffee, juice, and munchies will be available.This is a smoke-free Came Out of the Shell,’ acrylic on wood (1996), is part of the exhibit.By Catherine Dean Record Correspondent Lennoxville The world of contemporary art is a major focus of the Art Gallery of Bishop’s University.Throughout the fall of 1999, the gallery put out the call for submissions from professional and emerging artists and curators of the Eastern Townships.From 25 applicants, five were chosen to exhibit their work in ‘Vernissage .5 Contemporary artists from the Eastern Townships’.“The jury was looking for what in their inner feeling was important in the art,” said Gaëtane Verna, director of the gallery.“Each of the members of the jury is an artist from a different field.I usually choose the exhibitions here, so it’s good to sit back and look at other people’s choices.” By the time the gallery got in touch with the artists, some of the juried works had been sold, but Verna met with artists and chose works in the same spirit.An intriguing collection of pencil drawings by Francine Boivin and French text by Daniel Roy, both of Westbury, comprise ‘Fictitious Bonds are Drawn from the Eye to the Soul’.Scrolls of text hang in front of a drawing of compartmentalized faces and female nudes.These nudes are full of the feelings and anxieties present at this turn of the century.The text examines everyday male -female relationships and memory.Fish, a creature rich in literary and biblical symbolism is the subject of a series of works by Louisette Gauthier- Mitchell of Stanstead.The fish fly, featured in a number of the works was actually used by the ancient Macedonians.Not confined to the canvas alone, Gauthier-Mitchell has created a winged mixed-media box entitled ‘Pas de deux’ and ‘Case’, an oil on wood box.Both ‘Point d’O’ and ‘Suspension’, two large paintings in oil and acrylic combine fantasy and reality.In the multi-layered ‘Suspension’, a native and European figure share the centre of the painting.‘An Angel Come out of the Shell’, by Jean Gaudet of Sutton, is inspired by the sculpture of neo-classial Italian sculptor Canova.Canova’s angel is flanked by a large shell and a wing.Gaudet puts nature side by side with his portrayal of the statue, reminding us of the connection of man with the earthly and the divine.Arnaud Gosselin of Hatley, finds inspiration in the natural beauty of the townships.‘Massawippi: Deep Waters’ is full of depth and colour.‘To Come out of the Wood’ brings to mind farmer’s fields and woods.Gosselin writes of his work, “I am not doing landscapes, but exploring a surface.” The ‘To Go Inland’ colour prints are from a large series by Normand Rajotte of Montreal.The mysteries of unexplored nature are Rajotte’s terrain.From the cracked earth imprinted with raccoon, bird and human traces of ‘To Go Inland #5,’ to the shimmering water of #1 and the mussels and footprints on the beach of #7, man’s hidden presence is felt.The show runs May 3 to June 4.Opening reception: Wednesday, May 10, 5-7 p.m.in the presence of the artists.From meditation to scrapbooking Spring offerings at Bishop’s Knowlton Centre By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Knowlton Bishop’s University’s Knowlton Centre for Continuing Education has released its spring and summer calendar of non-credit workshops, shows and talks.• On Friday, June 9, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., art historian Nancy Ring will present a slide presentation entitled “The Lives and Works of Women Painters — 1550 to the Present.” Dr.Ring has a Ph.D.in art history and has specialized in the study of women artists.• The annual Art Show will take place July 22 and 23 at the centre.The show features works in diverse media produced by students enrolled in the art program.• Kathleen Patton is currently offering a workshop on Meditation (April 18 to May 30) “to learn and practice meditation.” The classes meet Tuesdays at 7:30 to 9 p.m.She currently teaches meditation in Knowlton and Sutton.• Poet Judith Avinger will offer a workshop in Creative Writing from May 3 to 24.Avinger, the author of “The Empty Bowl,” invites students to “open the door to inspiration through the practice of writing.” The class will meet Wednesdays from 2 to 4:30 p.m.• Granby artist Hélène Plourde will offer a workshop entitled “Mixed Media: Plaster and Wood on Acrylics” on May 12 and 13.The class will meet on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.and Saturday from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m.Plourde has taught workshops at Maison Bruck in Cowansville and has exhibited throughout the Eastern Townships.• On June 17, from 9:30 a.m.to 4 p.m., Bernice Sorge, a practicing art therapist, will offer “What is Art Therapy?” This hands-on workshop requires no prior experience in art.• On July 4 and 6, from 9:30 a.m.to 4:30 p.m., artist and UQAM professor Louise Fournel will offer “The Art of Scrapbook Making” (in French).“Scrap-booking” is a new form of writing that combines text, illustration and photos to write and document a life story.The workshop will cover writing, collage and découpage.• On July 10
