Shirley’s life is so defined by routine that she is consumed by a desire for change; so she takes a Greek holiday, then a Greek lover, then a Greek sabbatical.(Couples take note - this is what happens when you get that stuck in routine!) At first Shirley blames husband Joe for the mind-numbing boredom of their lives; however, once in Greece she realizes the rut is her own fault as much as his.“1 like to think that when Joe comes to Greece to get Shirley, they end up back together, because he too changes,” Stevens, always optimistic, projects.“She’s not in love with Kostas (her local lover).I think there is hope for the future.Joe and Shirley did love each other when they started out; but after twenty-three years of marriage -well, they need to revitalize it.They certainly were bored - she talked to the wall and he talked to the fridge! “This is a gem of a part.It is really well written - so perfect that in 38 pages of dialogue I would not want to change one line.Well, not intentionally,” Stevens laughs. However, she notes that she is making a deliberate change: “When Shirley says she’s 42, I’ve switched it to 48.1 don’t feel right saying 42 now.” The choice of Shirley Valentine as the first fund raiser seems fitting. It spotlights Stevens’ wonderful acting talent, a talent that we have seen less of in these past years as she has concentrated on directing musicals and running a summer theatre camp, and dinner theatre.(Echo Art Inc.’s upcoming production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” opens April 1 for a two-week run).Tired of the day-to-day anxiety of running the business which left her too little time to concentrate on art, Stevens and husband Jean-Charles (Chuck) Rivard decided to make Echo Art a non-profit organization in 1997.Now a board of directors, headed by Brome Lake weekend resident Donald Wilson, operate the company.Wilson, who works in Ottawa as a special events organizer, brings a love of culture and a solid professional background in organizing benefits to the board.Other members include Mahtani, Rivard, Kate Wisdom, John Davis and William Stevens. As Emma Stevens points out, “they are all people who love the theatre but have a different forte. They each have a different area of specialization which will make Echo Art run better.“We have had no funding for the last seven years. Now that we are non-profit we can go for funding. And the Auberge West Brome is being very generous with this fund-raiser.We are getting the bulk of the receipts -they are just covering cost.” Stevens pauses in her reflections on the difficult financial times she has survived in theatre.“Oh well, I enjoy doing it so much I just can’t give it up,” she smiles, delight and resignation prominent in her expression. The dinner part of the evening will consist of a buffet featuring roast beef and salmon. There will be a host of choices, so vegetarians need not worry.Tickets for the evening are $45 each and must be bought ahead of time. For further information, please call Echo Art at 242-2047. Steve Trew finds himself married to Brenda Harman-Code for the second play in a row.She also played opposite Trew as his spouse in Play On! This is fine by him: “Brenda is a good sport, I can needle her! The whole cast is very congenial, it’s a good cast, good director, good musical director.” “Beauty and the Beast, Really!” opened Thursday, March 12 with a benefit for Knowlton Academy. It continues through Sunday, March 22, with performances at 8 p.m.Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for children. For information and reservations, March 13-19, 1998 page 5 Townshipsw eek Record Cover Story By Richard McCallum Record Correspondent Lennoxville The last few decades have brought to the Bishop’s University Drama Department a solid reputation as one of Canada’s leaders in the development of new theatrical talent.Bishop’s drama professor George Rideout’s current production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible has distilled this theatrical veteran’s decade of teaching theatre into a vivid and thought-provoking entertainment featuring a seasoned troupe of drama students from Bishop’s who may very well go on to become some of the best of a new generation’s crop of thespians. The Crucible is a poignant study of how society crumbles when simple virtue fails and a confused, vain population allows scapegoats to be sacrificed to preserve the status quo.Set in Salem, Mass., a village of pilgrims in 1692, the play uses the Salem witch trials to serve as dramatic device and harpoon self-styled “defenders of democracy” American Senator Eugene McCarthy and his aide de camp Roy Cohn, whose sensational senatorial investigations into communist infiltration of the media and particularly Hollywood during the 50s saw the eventual blacklisting and forced retirement of many of Miller’s contemporaries, including sportswriter RingLardnerJr., among others.Miller’s fluid writing style is a lyrical tribute to the beauty of prose while still serving as a harsh warning to the proletariat to fear an unforgiving society which can be severely unjust when left to its own worst devices. As the young troupe of Bishop’s actors dashed about striving to complete last-minute finishing touches to the striking modular set and detailed period costumes before final dress rehearsal, Rideout took a brief moment to inform The Record on the artistic goals his cast were hoping to achieve with this production of The Crucible.“The reason we chose The Crucible as one of this year’s main-stage productions is that it is an ensemble piece which we think suits this particular group of students quite well,” said Rideout, clad in well-worn jeans, a windbreaker and baseball cap, worn for comfort during the long hours of last-minute preparations as the pre-show clock ticks on.“The play has 20 characters, and though there are major and minor characters throughout the piece, the only way to pull off this type of production is to make the entire show a result of team effort.” “Everybody in the cast gets a kick at the can in this show,” Rideout added.“While some characters may have longer moments than others on stage, no one character can really develop without the participation of the entire team.” The Crucible has a cast of 10 men and 10 women, who are about the same age as the people to whom the events happened to historically.“This is a highly dramatic piece that has a direct plot line with a driving force behind it, as opposed to a Chekhov piece which is more of a character study,” said Rideout.“This play has some fairly significant set changes that must be brought off with perfect timing during the show, and these set changes are done by the cast during the show. The effect visually is that as the cast go about the set change in costume the audience is treated to an artistic interpretation of the puritans at work, as if they were attending a barn raising or other daily chores. We hope that these concepts add depth and visual-ity to the production.” “The exercise also forces the cast members to work as a team, rather than just concentratingtheir own individual performances," Rideout added before excusing himself to check into more last-minute production details. To better understand their characters and the historical perspective of the play, once the show was cast, the entire crew took a field trip to Salem village to better research the historic sites so they may have a chance to physically incorporate the environment into their portrayal of these tragic historic characters. The trip was paid for by the students themselves and a grant from the Kotler Fund, which was donated to the theatre department so that drama students may take theatre-related field trips. For costume designer Lisa Gaskell, the field trip was a profound educational awakening, as wellas a fruitful source of inspiration for the show’s many period outfits.“Going to Salem and being able to observe the geography and climate along with the many museums we visited certainly helped me as a designer for this show’s costumes,” she said.“The costumes are very close to historically correct in terms of time period, but are actually a mix of both Puritan and Cromwellian designs. This show has taken a lot of preparation in terms of costumes,” added Gaskell.“Both the head of wardrobe and myself have been putting in 12-hour days, and most of the cast have also helped out with the sewing. It’s good for the department that we are making these costumes because we do not have that many period costumes for the 1600s in stock and those that we do have are in poor shape, so for a lot of the costumes we had to start from scratch.” Local music fans may spot Bootleg frontman Bryan Reid as pilgrim authority figure John Proctor.Reid, along with Heather Coutts, who plays Abagail Williams, reflected on what this production of The Crucible means to them as actingstudents.“Working in this show has been a real exercise in character development,” said Coutts.“One of the things I have learned on this show is to try to be intuitive and see what the author is trying to get at beyond the words of the text.If more thought is put into portraying a character, it brings about a more enriching and satisfying performance.” “A main-stage production demands a whole different approach to performance than the Studio Theatre experience,” added Reid.“The Centennial Theatre is a huge space to fill with your voice, for example, so everything about working in that type of space has to be bigger.A small gesture that may work from a viewing range of 10 feet must be changed so that someone 60 feet away can still appreciate it.” “The emotional aspects of this play demand that a certain intensity be sustained throughoutthe show, and that alone is a daunting challenge to any actor. To be able to sustain that type of emotion for two-and-a-half-hours is exhausting for the mind and body,” he concluded.“George’s direction has been very insightful he asks only that each player thoughtfully examine their character,” said Coutts.“We were constantly searching for the reasons why characters would be motivated to do the actions they did and how they would deal with the consequences of those actions without being judgmental as to their behavior.” This group of students are nearing the end of their university studies but there is a chance that some of the troupe may reunite for other productions.“Many of us are due to graduate, but we are having so much fun doing these shows that some of us in this cast may get together and set up a professional theatre group that would do work at thefringe festivals,” said Reid. The Crucible continues through March 15 at 8 p.m.Tickets cost $7, available at Centennial Theatre box office.Tel: 822-9692.The Friday, March 13, performance is a benefit for the Lennoxville and District Women’s Center. new album, new tour.Last Thursday someone called at CFLX-FM while I was on the air, wanting to know what was happening with Vince Gill following his separation from Janis Gill.I promised I’d tell him as much as I can in this week’s article in the Record. So Bill, here’s your answer: Vince Gill had a very cloudy year in 1997.First there was the death of his father and serious knee problems, and finally Janis filling for a divorce.Enough to drive anyone crazy, but not Vince Gill.He slowed down from touring in order to catch-up on the sleep he was lacking due to his hectic schedule. But he also needed this time off to let the emotional wounds heal.Things are coming around for Gill even though there’s no rumor of the possibility of a reunion with his ex-wife.Since January Gill has been busy with a virtual gale of activities onstage and off.He has been supporting the Grand Ole Opry with frequent appearances and there was also an appearance with Olivia Newton-John singing “You’re The One That I Want,” during the Operation Smile concert in Nashville.Lots of rumor were fueled from that but nothing confirmed. After this hard stretch, Gill is back with new songs, a new album and a red hot new tour.He looks fit, tanned and enthusiastic on TV, and it seems like a renaissance for the MCA Records artist. He is now in studio, working on a new album but not pressured by time since his new tour kicks off only in mid-June.Instead of the same package show, Gill’s new tour will feature such opening acts as Patty Loveless, Chely Wright and, possibly Restless Heart, which is great for those (Curb) If I Never Stop Loving You is Kersh’s second album and an excellent followup work to his first effort. So far Kersh hasn’t accomplished anything that could be called spectacular, but everything he has done is sincere and pleasant to listen to.Kersh’s material is very radio friendly and many tracks on the new album have the potential to become hits. His ability to demonstrate an emotional vulnerability in a very effective way explains his legions of female fans. The perfect example is “The Need” a beautiful ballad that showcases his rendition skills and warm baritone. There’s also the first single released “If I Never Stop Loving You,” a profession of undying love set to a smooth, mid-tempo musical backdrop, terribly sentimental but not sappy. There’s also the cover of Eric Clapton’s 1978 version of “Wonderful Tonight,” on which Kersh does a wonderful job, proving that the song had all the potential for being a great country song.Another interesting cover found on the album is Faron Young’s 1961 classic “Hello Walls.” The young singer makes it a barnstorming, honky-tonking romp which might surprise those used to Faron Young’s crooning rendition.Just the same it might become a favorite as it displays another way of singing a classic.David Kersh seems very comfortable mixing country rock with ballads and emotional numbers with fun to sing, dance and listen to material such as the early Eagles type of song, “Something To Think About.” The singer sounds friendly, sincere, talented and most of all he makes you feel as if he’s your next door neighbor, turned into a star, and singing just for you. This sophomore album will sell well and the songs will be played on the radio.JO-EL SONNIER: Here To Stay (Intersound) Although he’s not properly a country performer, most country fans are familiar with Jo-El Sonnier’s work.He had a string of Cajun-flavored, accordion-powered country hits in the 70s and 80s such as the Top 10 “Tear-Stained Letter” and “No More One More Time.” On this new 13-tracks album Sonnier has decided to include a lot of different musical styles, old material and new which gives us some kind of party album. The country hits are featured in the form of an infectious medley bound to please country music fans. There’s also three new songs, including the recently released single “Broken Hearted Side of New Orleans.” It wouldn’t be a Jo-El Sonnier album without some traditional Cajun tunes, which are represented here by “Jambal-aya,” “Polk Salad Annie,” “La Jolie Blonde” and “The Big Mamou.” This son of French-speaking sharecroppers can also rock, which he does with high energy on “Johnny B.Goode.” He com- pletes the album by serving us a regal ballad, Procol Harum’s “Whiter Shade of Pale.” This is an excellent follow-up to the Grammy-nominated Cajun Pride and a wonderful album to add to your collection.Hoping you will have a nice celebration for St.Patrick’s Day and in the same order do not miss Visage
