' s ' w"- ¦ M .pPv i .i ;; « ¦ : C/ / ¦ KwaWWBrav' ; :¦: «I .: S&& ig# ';"'y?c:f.r ¦¦&$%> .¦ „ _.*.>æMÊÈêBM WÊrnÊÊm : .'-¦ 'i¥,v s :.ï SsgpJS THE Supplement June 2002 PAGE 2 • CANADA DAY • THE RECORD Thursday, June 27, 2002 Bury celebration will be double whammy RECORD FILE PHOTOS j: •.i jx; ¦m-m .».„ mmm: W.Bruce Fowler Industries Inc Manufacturer of Woodwaiter and Dumbwaiter Products BRUCE FOWLER 4665 Nichol Road Lennoxville, Quebec Tel.: (819) 562-8510 Fax: (819) 562-2906 QibQxdet ^Vj : » {jj eOLUi-'tlii/c 4 Tanaka ÆjELISYJSL INC Peter Delisle s ti o 340, Queen Tel:: (819) 569-9821 Lennoxville (QC) J1M 1K9 Fax:(819) 821-4593 Staff How fitting, that on a day Bury’s new town hall will truly be showcased to the members of the community, Canada Day celebrations will begin at the main building in the municipality with the raising of the flag and singing of the national anthem.The 75th annual Canada Day bonanza will take place Saturday in the village and from the event kick-off to the final blasting off of fireworks and closing dance, there are plenty of activities scheduled for people of all ages.“It is a true family event,” says Hazel Kerr, a member of the organizing committee for the celebrations, who estimates between 3,000 and 5,000 people will take in the goings-on of the pre-Canada Day bash.“The day will be bedlam and we make the most of it.We really enjoy putting it on, especially when you see the little kids’ faces at the end of the day.They really enjoy it.” This year’s theme is the year of the horse and in conjunction with that, organizers are staging a super rodeo from 2 p.m.to 5 p.m.There will be a riding of the bulls and a course pick-up, where some of the 20 riders taking part will be pulled in.Members of the public may also get a chance to complete.“If time allows, an open contest of sheep riding will take place for the little ones,” said Kerr.In the morning, the annual fishing derby takes place from 7 a.m.to 11 a.m.for children.At the same time, a pancake breakfast is scheduled at St.Paul’s Rest Home, which is also home to a flea market in the basement.Music will be playing in the street from 8:30 a.m.on.Other activities in the morning include an arts and crafts show in the new town hall (beginning at 9 a.m.), servings of strawberry shortcake at 10 a.m., salad plates being served by the Bury United Cultural Centre at 11 a.m.and a children’s parade 45 minutes after that.Another flagship event is the grand parade, which begins at noon and will feature between 25 and 30 floats.The route takes the collection of bands and cars and horses and various groups and organizations represented from Concord Woodworldng on Maclver all the way down Main Street to begin the afternoon.After lunch, children aged 2 to 12 can take part in a track meet ffom 1:30 to 3 p.m„ hometown boy Bob Lasemba will return home ffom his current residence in Ontario to put on a concert ffom 1:30 to 8 p.m.and then other races for the older crowd will take part at 3 p.m.Line dancing will begin at 4 p.m.in the big tent, then a woodsmen contest at 4:30 p.m.Evening activities are highlighted by a sunset display of fireworks in the Bury park starting at 10 p.m„ while a closing dance in the main tent ffom Bonnies’ Country Band will go until 1:30 a.m.Entrance to all of the events, including the rodeo and dance, is $6, while children aged 12 and under are admitted free.There is a charge of a loonie for the fishing derby for those 12 and under.From the singing of O Canada, to the final tune being strummed out deep into the night, Bury’s 75th celebration should be exactly that -
