RECORD WEEK Arts and Entertainment Magazine December 31, 1997-January 9, 1998 ¦ PERRY BEATON/CORRESPONDF.N1I Meet Akaylah Faith Langlois and 56 other tight lights for '98 3 page 2 December 31, 1997-January 9, 1998 Townshipsw eek ' ¦ — «¦¦¦ THE — .¦ ¦ i» =Record= Talk of the Townships Colored baskets are overflowing with new stash It’s hard to admit Tamagachi gotcha The new year is right around the corner and I know what I’ll be doing in 1998 - I’ll be building an addition onto my apartment for all the new toys my kids got for Christmas.I opened the kids’ toy closet the other day to make room for the new haul but soon realized that nothing new could be crammed in there. The toy closet is basically a complex system of colored baskets, each filled with a specific toy so that clean-up is easier: blue basket for dinosaurs, red basket for plastic figurines, yellow basket for spiders and bugs, and so on and so on.Well, the dinosaur basket is ready to explode now that my son has added a stegosaurus and a spinosaurus to his collection. The bug basket is overflowing, too, since a dozen or so snakes, lizards and frogs made it into the Christmas stockings this year.Among other things, we also welcomed the arrival of two teddy bears, a doll, a Cabbage Patch baby and three other stuffed animals into the house. Our place looks more like a Toys r Us warehouse than an apartment.Ironically, the one toy that takes up the least room is the one I most resisted buying: my daughter’s Tamagotchi.Let me explain the phenomena known as Tamagotchi to those of you who are blissfully unaware of it: a Tamagotchi is a ‘virtual’ pet or child that lives inside a computer locket that kids wear around their necks.Tamagotchi gets hungry, thirsty, tired, bored, whatever, and it’s up to you to fulfil its needs. It’s sort of Linda’s Playground Linda Galeazzi m 6 V Take it in for repairs! The crazy thing is, I actually take it seriously.I push various buttons to read Tammy books so her IQ.will go up (we wouldn’t want a stupid Tamagotchi, now would we?); I play Rock, Scissors, Paper with her and let her win or else she starts beeping again; I give her more candy than I’ve ever given my own kids so that she’ll go to sleep and stop beeping for a while.Yesterday, my daughter heard me giving Tammy a speech about the importance of being patient, and with a smug snicker she said, “Gee, Mom, I thought you said this was the stupidest toy ever invented!” Hmmm .did I say that?Well, I also said Barbies were evil incarnate, but I still bought seven of them for my daughter. So sue me.It makes me dread what 1998 has in store for parents, in terms of toys and fads. What will I get suckered into next year?Only time will tell. All I do know is that by this time next year, Tammy will be in the toy closet, buried at the bottom of the infamous pink basket - that’s the one reserved for toys that quickly lost their novelty.Teddy Bears’ wish I i w •• :r PERRY BEATON/CORRESPONDENT Schubert and his friends love sweet honey cake and strolling in nature. They are wonderful dancers and talented musicians. They enjoy watching birds and smelling pretty flowers. They love being with their friends and taking afternoon naps. But above all, they love children! Townshipsw e e i< Record December 31, 1997-January 9, 1998 page 3 — By Sunil Mahtani Sherbrooke To her parents, Akaylah Faith Langlois is known as the ‘miracle baby’.For one thing, she was born 10 years after Larry and Sandra Langlois had their fourth - and presumably last - child.“Her middle name is Faith because, well, after four children, we weren’t supposed to have any more,” said mom Sandra from the family’s farmhouse in Hatley.“We really started right over with this one.Akaylah was born on May 7, 1997.named after her parents read that the word meant the ‘chief of the wolves’.They were also looking for a name that began with the letter ‘A’.“All our children’s names start with ‘A’,” said Sandra.“There’s Amy (18 years old), Angela (16), Adam (14) and Alicia (10).” Sandra said there is a second significant reason Akaylah is considered a ‘miracle baby’.“When I found out I was pregnant with Akaylah, my husband’s dad was being buried,” she said.“We lost one and gained another.Sometimes I look in her eyes and see my husband’s dad.” “My husband’s father was in a wheelchair; he couldn’t speak and he was always pointing his finger. When I had an ultrasound, the doctor said she had one finger pointing and she still points that finger today, so we always tell her, ‘You got grandpa’s finger’.’’ The seven-and-a-half-month-old baby, who was randomly selected to be featured on the cover of Townships Week to herald in the New Year, loves babies herself.“She sees the babies on the baby food jars and she always smiles at them and gives them a kiss,” said Sandra. The proud mother also said Akaylah is an alert child who knows how to keep the other kids in stitches.“She makes noises, when you pick her up she makes her feet go like she’s running, she smacks her hands on the tray.” The independent tyke with the dynamite smile also likes to help feed herself, picking up good habits from her brother and sisters.Dad Larry enjoys woodworking, making small cabinets and the like, while Sandra creates folk art on wood.Akaylah is also showing signs of creativity with her interest in music and dance.“She loves fiddling music, she hums like she’s trying to sing, and enjoys Riverdance,” said Sandra.“She got a little piano for Christmas and she really likes banging on the keys.” One of the things about Akaylah that really amazed her mom was that she started saying “Dada” when she was a mere five months old.Above all, Sandra said her newest daughter has a soft heart.“She’s a little angel. She’s so peaceful when she’s sleeping, and if I’m not there for some reason, she starts crying. When I get back she takes her hand and puts it on my shoulder and touches my hair and holds it in her hands and goes back to sleep.” All of us at The Record wish Akaylah Faith Langlois, and all the babies featured in this issue as well as their families, the best in 1998 and happiness always.(Q> vV ' •.3- • -a You gotta have Faith for 1998 T CLICHÉ RÉPÉTÉ A ÉCLAIRAGE in prison for a murder he didn’t commit.OPEN: Dec.26, 27 Jan.2 & 3 The best way to start a new year of country music is to take a look at what occurred in the past year. One of the year’s major events was the free Garth Brooks concert in New York City’s Central Park in front of hundreds of thousands of people.More people attended Garth Brooks’ show than any of the previous free concerts held in the park - that’s without counting millions more who watched on HBO for a mass sing-along of the greatest hits. The high-speed rise of LeAnn Rimes to the top of the country music charts was another of 1997’s top stories.Rimes became the first teenage solo act since Debbie Gibson to land not just one, but three multi-platinum albums in such a short period of time. Both You Light Up My Life - Inspirational Songs and Unchained Melody/The Early Years are double-platinum while Blue, released when she was just 14, has sold five million copies.LeAnnmania is here to stay.Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s love story keeps on delighting fans with their newborn daughter and the duet “It’s Your Love,” which spent six weeks at No.1, something unequaled since 1977’s “Luck-enbach, Texas” by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Many country music stars had chances to showcase their talents in Hollywood starring in movies and TV shows.Randy Travis is finishing his latest movie in Atlanta, Black Dog, co-starring Patrick Swayze.Travis plays a terrible singer and songwriter named Earl who’s part redneck with a temper and a little goofy. He also had co-starring roles in other 1997 movies such as Baby Geniuses, The Shooter, Boys Will Be Boys, T-N-T, Steel Chariots, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rainmaker and Steven Seagal’s Fire Down Below.Fire Down Below features many other country artists including Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, Kris Kristofferson, The Lynns (Loretta Lynn’s twin daughters, Patsy and Peggy), country songwriters Ed Bruce and Alex Harvey, and Mark Collie. The soundtrack for Fire Down Below includes Mark Collie, Aaron Tippin, Earl Scruggs, Alabama, Randy Scruggs, Travis Tritt, Marty Stuart, Randy Travis, The Lynns and Russ Taff.Mark Collie also portrays a stunt man in the new movie Magic Hour.He co-stars with film giants Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, Stockard Channing, Gene Hackman and James Garner. This is one you don’t want to miss.Dwight Yoakam has a role in The Newton Boys.Filmed in Austin and San Antonio the film is based on a true mid-western tale about the 1920s bank robbers. This is a follow-up of Yoakam’s critically-acclaimed 1996 portrayal of Doyle Hargraves in Billy Bob Thorton’s Academy-winning Sling Blade.LeAnn Rimes made her acting debut in the ABC-TV movie Holiday In Your Heart, based on a fictional Christmas book that she cowrote with author Tom Carter.Clint Black spent the fall in Texas filming a project he has personally nurtured for years: The true-life story of Cadillac Jack.Black stars in the CBS-TV drama as Jack Favor (a ’60s rodeo Gretzky was chosen as one of the centres on the team that will represent Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, in February. As the NHL season approaches the All-Star break on Saturday, Jan.17, and Sunday, Jan.18, Gretzky should be among the league’s top scorers. He currently is averaging about one point per game.CBC has the television rights to the 1998 All-Star Weekend at GM Place in Vancouver and will telecast the All-Star Game Jan.18.Sports on the SMALL SCREEN Ted Shaw TSN has two NHL games on its schedule this week: On Monday, Jan.5, the Calgary Flames are at Chicago, and on Thursday, Jan.8, Vancouver is at the Colorado Avalanche.Sandra Schmirler of Regina had quite a year in 1997.In addition to leading her curling team to victories at the Canadian Scott Tournament of Hearts, the Ford World Championship and the Canadian Olympic Trials in December, Schmirler gave birth to a daughter, Sara.At the Olympic trials, Schmirler’s team from Saskatchewan beat Shannon Kleibrink’s Manitoba team for the right to represent Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics.TVDATA Wayne Gretzky is still considered one of the best passers in the NHL, and will play for Canada at the '98 Winter Olympic Games in Japan.Canada’s newest star of the slopes, 24-year-old giant slalom specialist Thomas Grandi, apparently could have qualified for the Canadian or the Italian Olympic ski team.He was born in Bolzano, Italy, in 1972 while his Italian parents were vacationing in their native country during Christmas. The family had moved to Banff, Alta., a few years earlier.“I have dual citizenship, so I guess I could have raced for Italy,” Grandi says.Grandi is one of the few Canadian men to specialize in giant slalom, a more technical style of skiing than downhill or Super G, and is one of Canada’s best hopes for an Olympic medal in alpine skiing.Cin«m ¦Ü •9 Theatres ft 01 • Digital Sound OC.I • Curved Screens • Free parking Internet: cinéma9rockforest.ca >clt Forest 821-9999 FILM LISTING from Thursday, Dec.25th to Monday, Jan.5th MAMAN, JE M’OCCUPE DES MÉCHANTS (G) Everyday: 12:00 / 2:15 / 4:30 / 7:00 p.m.ALIEN: LA RÉSURRECTION (13+)(Horror) (French version) Every day: 9:25 p.m.TITANIC (G) (Not recommended lot young children) (Original version) Everyday: 1:00 / 4:30 / 8:00 p.m.LA PETITE SIRÈNE (G) Everyday: 12:10 p.m.JACKIE BROWN (French Version) Everyday: 2:10 / 5:00 / 8:00 p.m.ANASTASIA (G) (French Version) Everyday 12:10 / 2:20 p.m.LE FACTEUR Every day: 4:30 / 8:00 p.m.TOMORROW NEVER DIES / 007 (13+) Every day: 12:45 / 3:30 / 6:45 / 9:30 p.m.MATUSALEM II (G) Everyday: 12:05 / 2:20 / 4:35 p.m.FRISSONS 2 (16+) Every day: 6:45 / 9:30 p.m.NE RÉVEILLEZ PAS UNE SOURIS QUI DORT (G) Everyday: 12:05 / 2:20 / 4:35 / 7:00 / 9:25 p.m.LES BOYS (13+) Every day: 12:00 / 2:25 / 4:30 / 6:50 1 9:30 p.m.UN LOUP-GAROU À PARIS (13+) (Violence) Every day: 12:05 ! 2:20 / 6:35 / 7:00 / 9:25 p.m, holiday schedule * WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31 LAST PRESENTATION AT 7:00 P.M.•THURSDAY, JANUARY 1st FIRST PRESENTATION AT 2:00 P.M.Gift certificates on sale What’s o n Rates NON-PROFIT: There will be a minimum charge of $6, pre-paid (25 words or less) and .25C per word for additional words.COMMERCIAL: There will be a minimum charge of $12, pre-paid (25 words or less) and .50C per word for additonal words.Deadline: Noon Wednesdays Tel: (819) 569-9525 Fax: (819) 569-3945 Towns hip s w eek ¦ .1.1 "" "un .i mTHEmi i page 12 December 31, 1997-January 9, 1998 Variety Nicholson says he would never throw a dog in the garbage Tarantino starry-eyed about Sorvino’s acting By Jamie Portman Southam News Maverick film-maker Quentin Tarantino is as star-struck as anyone when it comes to girlfriend Mira Sorvino. He says he doesn’t want to sound prejudiced, but he can’t avoid beating the drums on behalf of her acting abilities. In fact, he predicts she will have a stupendous career.“Let me tell you about Mira as an actress,” Tarantino burbles enthusiastically.“It will take me about seven years to be proven right on this, but I think that seven years from now Mira Sorvino will be thought of as the actor of her genera- tion - just the same way that Robert DeNiro was considered the actor of his generation during the 1970s.” Tarantino also wants people to note he uses the word “actor” rather than “actress” in predicting Sorvino’s success. That’s because he believes she will top her peers of both genders.“I would not make a sweeping statement like this and possibly embarrass her if I didn’t really feel this way.I’m being as serious as a heart attack in saying that seven years from now you will all see it.” The big question is - when will Tarantino and Sorvino work together?“I’m dying to work with her,” Tarantino says.“But I don’t know when it will be.It has to be something special.” Alley on smoking Kirstie Alley loves doing cigarette scenes on film.“Bette Davis is my idol,” she says.“Nobody used a cigarette better on screen.” But she also thinks smoking is wrong.“I did smoke once.I smoked three packs of cigarettes a day, but not any more.” So how come she still smokes in her films?Alley says that’s different - and besides she’s selective. That’s why she was ready to portray a cigarette-wielding, self-centred New York socialite in For Richer For Poorer.“The only time I’m interested in smoking on screen is when I’m playing some obnoxious person or someone so stressed out that they’re ready to quit.” Animal-lover Nicholson In his new comedy, As Good As It Gets, Jack Nicholson throws an innocent dog down a garbage chute. But he’s horrified that anyone should think he would do such a thing in real life.“Actually I have a great affinity with animals.I always have had.I don’t always own them, but I get along with them very well. They like me.” The main dog in Nicholson’s life these days is a cockapoo owned by his two young children.“We adore each other.” Dimension Films is hot 'Course, in Bjokliimu, it's called Vinfer Firmüla Shell knows cold.Winter Formula cold. Our gasolines are the best selling stuff on earth, and for good reason. No matter how cold it gets, no matter where you go, Winter Formula fights back with better starts and better combustion in the freezing cold. After all, in the middle of winter, /fTT\ a nice warm engine sounds good in any language.S-~r FORMULA Seasons change. So do we.Miramax Pictures’ new Dimension Films division has turned into a hot commodity thanks to ‘genre’ movies like From Dusk To Dawn, Scream and Scream 2.Now Miramax has decided to capitalize further on Dimension’s success by setting up a new publishing operation under its name. The first book to appear under the Dimension banner will be Kevin Williamson’s screenplay for the original Scream, released last year.Gibson picks Egoyan Mel Gibson’s Icon Productions company is known for taking gambles in Hollywood. With the exception of the Oscar-winning Braveheart, Gibson and his colleagues have preferred taking on risky projects like the recent Anna Karenina and Fairy Tale. Now Icon has decided to film Felicia’s Journey, the award-winning William Trevor novel about a pregnant Irish country girl who makes a desperate trip to England in search of the man who dumped her.Gibson knew it would be a difficult project to bring off on screen and that it required q special kind of director. It was those concerns which led him to Canada’s Atom Egoyan whose The Sweet Hereafter has been winning plaudits around the world.¦âEA&ON’âl GREETINGS January 2-8, 1998 page 13 TVWEEK Canadian western is a romantic comedy Cowboy hits the trail to the heart of the West By David Migicovsky TVData Compared to the old American West, the Canadian West seemed somewhat tame - more mild than wild. Not surprisingly then, Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy, a TV movie and possible series pilot airing Sunday, Jan.4, on CBC, isn’t about cattle rustlers and stagecoach robberies. It’s a romantic comedy about three young people struggling to build a ranching business in British Columbia during the World War II era.The film is based on a trilogy of Western novels by Richmond P.Hobson Jr.Writer-producer David Barlow first discovered these works during the 1980s when Canadian studios were not making many Westerns. When TV series such as Dr.Quinn, Medicine Woman and Walker, Texas Ranger became surprise successes on American networks in the early 1990s, the CBC believed the time had come for Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy. Two of the leads in the film should be familiar to TV audiences.Chad Willett (Madison) stars as Rich Hobson, and Sarah Chalke (Roseanne) plays Gloria McIntosh, the society woman with whom he falls in love.Ted Atherton, who has had numerous stage roles, makes his first major small-screen appearance as their partner, Panhandle Phillips.Willett’s role allows him to play out a typical boyhood dream.“I had all the gear when I was (growing up),” he says.“I still have my cowboy hat and boots and stuff.I grew up in cowboy country a little bit - in British Columbia, in Kamloops, Prince George, places like that where the cowboy is well-known.“I’ve really been fortunate .you know, playing a cowboy. You can’t ask for much more than that.” Willett enjoys portraying real-life characters.“It adds a real treat as an actor,” he says.“To be able to get a sense of what that person was like and portray them in the best light you possibly can, and the truest light you can.For Chalke, the key to playing Gloria was found in the feature films of the 1930s and 1940s.“I looked to actresses of that time who portrayed women in a very positive and strong-willed, empowered light,” she explains.“Women like Claudette Colbert, Myrna Loy and Anne Baxter -Kate Hepburn in particular, and the film The Philadelphia Story in particular.I was able to take a lot of things from that for Gloria.“Gloria essentially came from a very sheltered, wealthy family and had a life full of being very protected and privileged. Then when she got the chance to move away from that when Rich came along, she jumped at the chance.” If home is where the heart is, Cowboy just might find a place on CBC’s weekly schedule.\W"i TVDATA Chad Willett and Sarah Chalke learn there’s Nothing Too Good For A Cowboy.17 i L n day 6:00 PM CD S) Q B f3 (22 News B Le TVA ID Global Tonight (29) Grace Under Fire SI Simpsons (33) NewshourWith Jim Lehrer B3 ITN World News r.T l A Northern Exposure iTV'i Bluesman (R) G23 WorldView I »J t-T»i Sea: The Last Frontier (R) ÇE3 World News Hid* Images (R) HU'V.'i Thirtysomething lltH Renovation Guide (R) (Part 3 of 12) rj-iki Little House on the Prairie LIU Jane Hawtin Live nra uh oh!
