TALK OF rri THE/ lownsmps The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships January 21-January 27, 2000 A history of photography By Catherine Dean Record Correspondent Lennoxville Over a period of 25 years, Montreal lawyer Luc LaRochelle collected 600 significant works of art.Three hundred of these have been donated to the Musée des beaux-arts in Sherbrooke, where he was raised. Now, the Bishop!s University Art Gallery in Lennoxville presents a number of photographs from this collection, which has never been exhibited. The first time the LaRochelle collection will be open to the public at the Musée des beaux-arts will be in March. The photographs at the Bishop's Art Gallery, diverse in subject matter and type of artistry, constitute a history of photography. They include George Washington Wilson's action shot of life in the 19th century entitled "The Bank of England, London"; a stunning portrait of Queen Elizabeth II enveloped in window light by Cecil Beaton; the Andre Kertesz portrait of Louis Tihanyi with a ribbon of smoke curling up his lip; and Robert Mapplethorpe's "A Stray Cat," an elegant photograph of a 1980 youth lovingly tending his slicked-back pompadour hair style.Curating the exhibit from the approximately 50 photographs in the Musée des beaux-arts collection was a challenging task for Bishop's Art Gallery coordinator Gaëtane Verna."It's always difficult to decide how you're going to present works. The scope here is so wide and I did not want it done only chronologically," she said."The exhibition is divided into landscape photography, portrait and press photography and contemporary photography." "The contemporary photographers use photography as a means - it becomes a medium inside the elaboration of their work. It's a tool - the photography becomes a tool," she said."At the beginning, photography was mostly used to represent reality, now it has evolved." The photographs also tell something of the collector."Looking through the collection, I get a sense of strong works - it's a question of depth and passion in everything he's chosen," said Verna of LaRochelle.SEE PHOTOGRAPHY, PAGE 4 PERRY BEATON/SPECIAI.f- « The Andre Kertesz portrait of Louis Tihanyi with a ribbon of smoke curling up his lip is part of the Luc LaRochelle exhibit at the Bishop’s University Art Gallery.Outstanding organist Organist Bernard Lagacé, born in 1930 in Québec, is considered on the international music scene to be one of the outstanding organists of his generation. He will play an All Bach Organ Recital on Sunday, Jan.30, at 4 p.m.at St.Mark’s Chapel, Bishop’s University in Lennoxville. His repertoire includes most of the major works for organ, but he has become known as a specialist in Baroque music and, in particular, the music of Bach.Lagacé has performed Bach’s complete organ works twice in recital and is currently recording the cycle for the Analekta label in Montreal to critical acclaim. As a world-renowned teacher and performer, Lagacé has served on the juries of many international competitions and appeared at prestigious music festivals in Europe and North America. He was also one of the main instigators of the movement to renew classical organ design in North America.Look What’s Inside Les Dépendances du Manoir a unique pastoral experience in Brigham.A free Christian rock concert this weekend presented by The Cave drop-in centre.Reviews of Cycling Into Your Soul and Culture jam - The Uncooling of America.Death row, angels’ lives and 101 things to hate on video this week.Denzel Washington delivers a knockout punch in the new film, The Hurricane. ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ MAURICE CROSSFIELD Les Dépendances du Manoir owners Jean-Philippe Gosselin and Lucie Paulhus worked for two years bringing their vision to vivid life last August.By Sunil Mahtani An unassuming exterior and a classy interior, combined with service as warm as the subdued lighting, makes Les Dépendances du Manoir the height of country elegance.Add to that refined gourmet cuisine and you’ve got a fine new addition to the Townships restaurant scene.Les Dépendances du Manoir is much more than a place to eat, however. It is a unique agri-touristic project designed by owners Jean-Philippe Gosselin and Lucie Paulhus, who worked for two years bringing their vision to vivid life last August. It is a restaurant in which chef Christian Néron skillfully incorporates the produce from their apple orchard into his creations; a cheese shop with 125 Quebec and imported cheeses, some of which Néron also uses in his cuisine; a pastry-maker where patrons may view the process through large windows before purchasing a variety of pies and cakes; and a boutique specializing in regional products, including boar pâté, cider vinegar, maple syrup, honey and goat’s milk soap.Driving along Pierre Laporte boulevard at the border of Cowansville and Brigham, less than five minutes from BMP Hospital, one comes upon an impressive burnt red converted barn, with little white windows along the main body of the barn and up the silo. The cheese and pastry shop is on the bottom floor, while the restaurant sits on top.The dining room is a beautifully utilized space, with tables arranged in a horseshoe-shape with the ends against tall, vertical windows overlooking the countryside. In the centre, a large wrought-iron chandelier hangs from the ceiling.Patrons sit on engraved press-back chairs while unobtrusive Celtic and classical music fills the room. The evening menu features seven table d’hôtes, most ranging in price from $25.75 to $32.75, which include an entrée, a main dish, dessert and coffee, tea, tisane or milk. These may also be ordered à la carte. The main dishes feature a good balance of meats and fish, including Brome Lake duck, pork, salmon and even elk. There is also a pasta and two Swiss fondues, one mild featuring Gruyère and Émmental cheeses and the other Appenzell-style, using stronger cheeses.1116 fondue table d’hôtes cost $60.40 and serve two people. The hostess-manager Audette introduced us to our waiter, Jean-Philippe, who proceeded to take very good care of us.The Chaudron-née du jour was a delightfully smooth blend of hazelnuts and artichoke hearts puréed into a rich, dark soup. The noisette balanced brilliantly with the vegetable and was not too heavy, starting my meal off right. My companion ordered the Salade de chèvre chaud au porto et aux can-neberges, an extremely attractive plate of two warm, creamy goat’s cheese rounds on toast, served on a bed of greens, cranberries, olives and shredded veggies, covered with a bold porto dressing with endives on the side.Delicious.The main dishes were equally eyecatching. The Croustillant de canard de Brome confit au fromage de chèvre et au romarin was pieces of the celebrated Brome Lake duck mixed with goat’s cheese and spices in a light, flaky phyllo pastry. This was a tasty dish, although a bit dry.It was served with a bold red cabbage concoction, beets, broccoli and wild rice, all fine accompaniments. The Escalope de saumon frais au basilic et vin blanc was a good dish featuring firm salmon covered in an excellent wine sauce, served witl^ the same sides as the duck.At this point, patrons who wish to add a cheese plate to their evening may do so for $9.25; $13.75 if you also wish to consume some Porto. We opted to head straight for the desserts. We were told the chef improvises at times and tonight has created a Plum Pudding. This was a classic, dark pudding featuring raisins, nuts and served with a terrific custard sauce.Very well done. The Tarte aux pommes et sucre à la crème was a good pie, the apple and cream flavours blending very well, however it was a bit cold and this subtracted from the enjoyment. Both desserts were served with strawberries and sections of kiwi, tangerine and grapefruit. Two table d’hôtes, not including wine or gratuity, cost $62.An interesting feature of the dining room along one side of the wall is a corridor with windows that enable patrons to see the bread and pastry-making process, the European-style cave where the cheeses are aged and the incredible wine cellar, which is actually in the original silo of the barn and can hold 10,000 bottles.Les Dépendances du Manoir is also open for lunch, when one may try the chefs daily pasta creation; a quiche with zucchini, sundried tomatoes and Gruyère cheese; or a chicken, duck or turkey pie. These are served à la carte for around $7.95 or as part of a table d’hôte for around $14.50, including soup or salad, dessert and beverage.Breakfast at Les Dépendances sounds like a delicious adventure with such items as Crêpes aux pommes; Galettes de sarrasin aux pommes et Gruyère-, and Pain doré à la vanille et pommes caramélisées, all for $7.50 each.A brunch special is also offered for $17.50, which includes fresh apple juice, a basket of croissants, toast, chocolatines and house jams, a house cheese selection, a country-style quiche with its own accompaniments, French toast and pancakes with caramelized apples (or a dessert of your choice) and coffee or tea. This is offered from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m.Les Dépendances du Manoir offers a pastoral experience that is a treat for locals and visitors alike.Les Dépendances du Manoir is located at 1199 Pierre Laporte (Route 241) in Brigham. It is open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays only.It is year, recorded a demo they hope will earn them a place in the global Seventh Day Evangelical conference to be held in Toronto next year.“Our goal,” said choir director Elizabeth Elysée, “is to sing the religious works of great classical composers to people across Quebec.” The experience of 60 trained voices harmonizing on the strength of their faith is a powerful one and the young choir seems ready to take on the task of spreading the words and music.- Rick Foss, Record Correspondent.Free Christian rock concert on Saturday By Catherine Dean Record Correspondent Lennoxville A free rock Laura Ashley, United Colours of Benetton, The Gap, McDonalds, I was struck by the fact that this could be a suburban mall in Mississauga, Etobicoke, Garry Indiana, or on the West Island of Montreal. It was generic.Smaller awakenings have occurred, watching commercials for Coca Cola on movie screens or being bombarded with the latest movie/toy/fast food tie-in and I, like many others am left won- dering what, if anything is corporate or commercial free.Kalle Lasn, a respected documentary maker living in Canada and founder of Adbusters Magazine’, and a group of people across the world calling themselves culture jammers have had enough of the nullifying effects of corporate America on North American and world culture.Lasn’s book ‘Culture Jam - The Uncooling of America’ encourages average people to do something about corporate influence, whether it be convincing a university hockey team to protest wearing a corporate logo to fighting back with our own television, radio and print spots expressing our concerns with multi-national corporations, the deleterious effect of the fashion industry on body image, the unnatural hunger and greed created by marketing and the strafing of the environment.Lasn underscores the fact that America has always represented itself as a culture of freedom, born of revolution - a revolution, which involved a stand against a corporation - the British East India Tea Company, a monopoly which imposed excessive taxes on its goods. In its infancy, American democracy monitored its corporations very closely, revoking the charters of those who did business dishonestly.Lasn maintains that a questionable court decision Santa Clara County v.Southern Pacific Railroad in 1886, which gave corporations the same rights as individuals, thus according to corporations greater rights than the rights of the individual changed American democracy forever, eventually subjugating the people to consumer concerns. In a world where consumer goods are so plentiful, Lasn reminds us that levels of depression are at an all-time high, communication is at an all-time low and our energies are geared to making enough money to submerge our identities in consumer culture.Mixing the personal with the universal, Lasn outlines his goal to start a revolution not unlike the civil rights, feminist, or eco-movement towards a more democratic life, free of the dreck being fed the public by corporate America.Polemical, dry, caustic, earnest and factual, ‘Cultural Jam The Uncooling of America’ is dedicated to making readers think about their day-to-day lives, future prospects and how individuals can make a difference. For information re- Culture Jamming check out the website www.adbusters.org.Caucasian one at that) with money to spend.Hmm.As a spiritual guide, Archibald offers some food for thought. The idea of taking an “ordinary” experience like cycling and turning it into a spiritual journey is an intriguing one.But the book begins to sound like typical New Age advice: practice yoga and meditation, find your inner voice and let it guide you, etc.Still, Archibald’s book does provide inspiration. She emphasizes how we must keep in touch with loved ones and draw on our memories of them to provide comfort and support in difficult times. We must also learn to find fulfillment in every day, in just being alive, and dare to take risks and explore our creativity. If it were not so bogged down with mundane details about her travels, Cycling Into Your Soul may have been a more interesting and profound spiritual book.As it stands, this book is recommended as light reading with some interesting facts about different countries, along with some spiritual advice./tUDtnur, West Brome RESERVATIONS 266-7552 1 -888-902-7663 128 route 139, West Brome A SCOTTISH EVENING in honor of ROBBIE BURNS Friday January 28th • Bagpipes & Highland dancers • Whiskey-nosing, $20 per person • Scottish menu • Address to the “Haggis” per person 29 (plus taxes and service) Packages available starting at $75.50 p.p.dbl occ I - TALK OF THE JOTPnshipS page 6 January 21-January 27, 2000 movies A world of adventure, comedy and drama awaits Death row, angels’ lives and 101 things to hate wood has produced better films about oppression, such as The Color Purple and The Shawshank Redemption.10 Things I Hate About You Video Pix and Pans Paraskevi Mazarakiotis The film explores the daughters’ desire for independence, and as the father’s resistance to this independence leaves room for cute, funny moments.A Lesson Before Dying Joseph Sargeant’s powerful but average historical drama, based on Ernest J.Gaines’ novel, focuses on an African-American man who faces racial inequality and injustice. This tragic story takes place in 1948 Louisiana, where Jefferson (Mekhi Phifer) finds himself at the wrong place at the wrong time.Accused and imprisoned for a murder he did not commit, Jefferson's dignity is stripped while he waits for his death sentence.Grant (Don Cheadle), a teacher, visits Jefferson to prepare him for his death - not an easy task.Don Cheadle and Mekhi Pfifer deliver moving performances as teacher and student who develop a strong bond, and learn lessons from one another.Together, they resist aggression while finding their strength in God and love. This film is a celebration of the gift of life and the healing powers of love, friendship and faith. However, the film’s over-sentimentality diminishes the profoundness of the theme.Holly- This is a light film about fathers, daughters, sisters and teenage romantic relationships.Gil Junger’s film is sure to entertain the entire family. This romantic comedy revolves around the teenage Stattford sisters, Kat (Julia Stiles) and Bianca (Larisa Oleymick), different as night and day.Kat is an untamed shrew who refuses to let any guy get close to her.Bianca, on the other hand, enjoys all the attention she receives from men - especially Joey (Andrew Keegan). The only problem is that their over-protective father (Larry Miller) won’t allow them to date, and the only way to convince Dad is to get Kat interested in dating, because only Kat can persuade Dad.Gil Junger has directed a typical com-ing-of-age film that places much emphasis on the father-daughter relatibnship. The Dreamlife of Angels Once in a while a film comes along that gives such a gritty, in-your-face portrayal of a nightmarish life it’s disturbing because it’s so true. This critically-acclaimed film was a winner at the Cannes Film Festival. It’s nice to get a break from the typical, glossed-over versions of reality offered in Hollywood films. We follow two young women in France as they face ordinary problems like finding a job, and more importantly, getting and keeping worthwhile relationships and discarding meaningless ones.On one hand we have Isa (Elodie Bouchez), a poor but cheery vagabond.Isa meets up with Marie (Natacha Régnier), a seemingly tough and nonchalant young woman.Isa manages to break through Marie’s tough shell - for a while. Both girls are young and naïve, and the first half of the film gives us the carefree and sometimes humorous escapades of these two young women. But underneath Marie’s tough exterior lies a sad, lonely and self-destructive girl who wants desperately to escape a life of hardships. These qualities lead Marie to hopeless relationships with men and distances her from her true friends. These characters are drawn from life; they are created in a mature and unsentimental fashion. Both actresses do a fine job, and Regnier inhabits the role of Marie so well it’s uncanny.Nothing in Dreamlife is polished; no lenses soften the screen’s images. The actresses’ natural, bare look, uncombed hair and worn clothes are a reflection of their harsh lives.Erick Zonca’s film leaves no room for the viewer to escape nor dream. If you want a film that will open your eyes to the plight of poor, working-class youth, you can do no better than this remarkably intense film.Quaid philosophical about ups and downs SOUTHAM Dennis Quaid playing a footballer for the second time in his career.By Jamie Portman Southam News Dennis Quaid smiles at the irony.Twice in his acting career he has taken on the role of a footballer - once in the 1988 Everybody's All American as a college football hero who makes the mistake of believing in his own mythology, and currently as an aging, injury-ridden quarterback in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday.Yet, in private life his own football ambitions were shattered when he was still in his teens."I wanted to play football at UCLA.But they told me I was too small.I still went ahead arid tried out for the team, but they all laughed at me." Quaid, whose normal weight is 180, ended up concentrating on drama instead. He jokes that the decision was pragmatic at the time."The drama room was air-conditioned so it was very attractive. Then, there were all the girls who had enrolled." Still, by the time he became a movie star, he had the rugged good looks and the physique of a football player - which is why director Taylor Hackford cast him in Everybody's All American.During that shooting, Quaid discovered the true meaning of pain. After that experience, he says, "I do pain very well on the screen .it's easy for me." "I broke my collar bone when I was hammered by the second hardest hitter in the NFL.What made me angry when I saw the film was that the scene wasn't that big on camera.I could have been anybody." Not surprisingly, he was bracing himself for the worst when he signed for Any Given Sunday. He jumped at the chance to be in an Oliver Stone movie, but he also knew that the award-winning director of Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July worked best in a state of chaos."Oliver likes this sense of total anarchy," Quaid says philosophically. But it turned out that Stone, despite his slave-driving reputation, couldn't be more solicitous about his star's well-being."I didn't get bashed up," Quaid reports with some surprise."Oliver was the one who was out there constantly telling me to get my double to do a scene." Nevertheless, the National Football League's bosses huffily refused to co-operate in the making of the film, but Quaid isn't surprised."I can't say I blame them.If I were a corporation with that much money at stake, I'd want the corporation portrayed my way. They didn't want to deal with a loose cannon like Oliver. But by not co-operating they freed him up to make the movie he wanted to make."The person best equipped to make a modern-day football movie is Oliver Stone.Basically this is a war film, and Oliver knows how to shoot war films.Oliver relates to footballers because they're warriors and he's a warrior himself. And although the total chaos of his set is not the way I would work as a director, it does work for him.He doesn't just go to the edge - he goes beyond it." January 21-January 27, 2000 page 7 TALK OF THE Townships A world oj adventure, comedy and drama awaits movies Washington scores knockout in Hurricane RUBIN Canadiana references somewhat corny By Harry Hodge Denzel Washington pulls no punches in his new movie, The Hurricane.Washington is Rubin “the Hurricane” Carter, the wrongly imprisoned prize-fighter who is ultimately venerated after being incarcerated over a multiple homicide in New Jersey. While in prison, Carter wrote an introspective book called The Sixteenth Round, which was eventually read by young Lesera Martin (played by Vicellous Reon Shannon).Martin is an American teenager from New York who is taken in by a group of activists living in Toronto and, after reading Carter’s book, he’s compelled to visit the boxer. His guardians take an interest in Carter’s plight and eventually move to New Jersey in an effort to free the disgraced great.Shannon is convincing as the compassionate young Martin, so it may come as a shock to learn the actor is in reality 28 years old.He also provides some odd remarks about Canadian society throughout the film, commenting that Canucks are only happy while outside “.raking leaves.” or “.tapping trees for maple syrup.” The blame for this could be attributed to writers Armyan Bernstein (also a producer of the film) and Dan Gordon.Perhaps the creative team at Universal Pictures didn’t think any Canadians would watch the movie, but those-wacky-Canadian comments drew a fair share of chuckles and headshakes from the crowd.Later on, the villainous Detective Vincent Della Pesca (Dan Hedaya) warns Lesera and his Canadian pals to back off from digging into the Carter case, reminding them they aren’t in safe Toronto anymore and he goes so far as to call SOUTHAM NEWS Denzel Washington plays wrongly imprisoned murderer Rubin Carter in The Hurricane.one of the activists “.Mr.Canada.” in his most evil and sarcastic tone. With this unusual undercurrent to The Hurricane, it is surprising that a Canuck is the brains behind the whole thing.Celebrated director Norman Jewison (Moonstruck, Jesus Christ Superstar) uses a series of flashbacks to harken back to Carter’s troubled youth, his rise to stardom in the world of boxing and his subsequent fall from grace.Another homegrown talent in The Hurricane is Deborah Kara Unger, who plays chain smoking activist Lisa Peters.Unger gives a solid performance, though not much is really demanded of her given the audience knows what’s going to happen before the movie starts. That being said, The Hurricane is not going to surprise anybody.Carter’s eventual release is well-documented, though the film is detailed in its coverage of the activists and their search for the truth. The real reason to go see The Hurricane is Denzel’s a fan of Norman Jewison By Jamie Portman Southam News Ask Denzel Washington to name his favourite directors, and Canada's Norman Jewison will be at the top of the list.Washington has worked with Jewison twice - in the 1984 A Soldier's Story and in the current The Hurricane - and he says this is a filmmaker who makes his actors feel secure."Norman loves his actors. He takes care of them.He protects them.I wouldn't have found some of the moments 1 did find in this film if he hadn't created an environment where I felt safe to be free and to experiment.Very few directors I know work like that - to create an environment where you can try anything. It's important to me that I can trust a director and feel like taking chances." Washington is being touted for an Oscar nomination as a result of his lacer- ating performance as Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, the American boxer who spent two decades in penitentiary for murders he didn’t commit. But the actor doesn't speculate on his chances in the Academy sweepstakes."Sure, an Oscar nomination is better than a sharp stick in the eye, but you have to be quiet about it.All I can say -and I mean this from the bottom of my heart - is that I worked as hard as I could on this film." for Denzel Washington’s portrayal of Carter, his finest work to date.Washington obviously learned his chops in the ring before filming began, and the physical changes he undergoes to age over 30 years are striking. He also ably shows the audience a man consumed with embit-terment and hatred who does have a softer side but buries it to survive his cruel banishment from the outside world. With Jewison’s direction, the black and white inside-the-ring footage is particularly vivid, and somewhat reminiscent of the story of Jake La Motta in Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece, Raging Bull. But here the similarities end; while Raging Bull benefited from the writing talents of the legendary Paul Schrader, The Hurricane is a good movie in spite of a mediocre script. And it is Washington’s performance that will score a knockout with audiences.Cinétn ck Forest •9 Theatres R91-QQQQ • Digital Sound 1 • Curved Screens • Free parking Internet: actionfilm.ca/cinema9 FILM LISTING Fri., Jan.21“, Thurs., Jan.27* LA LIGNE VERTE (13t) Every day: 12:30 / 4:00 / 8:00 p.m.JEUNE FILLE INTERROMPUE (16+) Every day: 12:30 / 3:30 / 6:30 / 9:25 p.m.L’HOMME BICENTENNAIRE (G) Every day except Thurs.: 12:30 / 3:30 / 6:30 / 9:30 p.m.Thurs.: 12:30 / 3:30 p.m.LE PETIT STUART (G) Every day: 12:45 / 3:30 / 6:20 p.m.LES HÉROS DU DIMANCHE (13+) Everyday: 8:15 p.m.ANNA ET LE ROI (G) Every day: 12:20 / 3:30 / 6:25 / 9:30 p.m.THE HURRICANE (13+) (Original Version) Every day: 12:20 / 3:30 / 6:25 / 9:30 p.rr L'OEUVRE DE DIEU, LA PART DU DIABLE (G) (Not recommended lor young children) Everyday: 12:30 / 3:30 / 6:30 / 9:25 p.m.HURRICANE (13+)(French Version) Every day; 12:20 / 3:30 / 6:25 / 9:30 p.m.SUPER NOVA (Original Version) (13+) Every day: 12:45 / 3:45 / 6:45 / 9:25 p.m. TALK OF THE Townships page 8 January 21-January 27, 2000 R FrnR p Tl kTALK Fantasy Peek TVDATA H Griffe I'M.'!
