TALK OF m THE/ .lownsmps The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships December io-December 16, 1999 Playwrighting’s golden Goldfinch By Catherine Dean Lennoxville Correspondent Sherbrooke Record Ellen Goldfinch has won the 60th Annual Canadian One Act Play-wrighting Competition 1999 for her first drama, 'Baking and Other Acts of Courage' from 200 participants. The contest is sponsored by the Ottawa Little Theatre.First prize comes with the Solange Karsh award, a $1,000 cash prize and specially designed medal and a gold medal donated by Henry Birks and Sons Ltd.Goldfinch has received honourable mentions in the same contest for other plays, all comedies."I started writing plays when I first moved here in 1990.The reason I began playwrighting is a very close friend of mine - my best friend in high school who was a playwright - died, and I felt someone should carry the torch. The way I dealt with this stuff was I took some of our old letters and I incorporated them in my first play," Goldfinch said.Playwrighting is tied in with Goldfinch's love of acting."I had just finished doing a play.It was performed at one of the last Quebec drama festivals in Montreal and I performed with two other women in 'Mask of Hiroshima'.The three of us were given the best supporting actress award by the Quebec Drama Federation in 1992.So when this play was over, I wanted to keep going with theatre. So I worked on this play and I showed it to Katie Curtin, the director, and she liked it and suggested I show it to George Rideout (drama professor at Bishop’s University) and that I take the playwrighting courses at Bishop's." "Those playwrighting courses were wonderful," Goldfinch continued.Continued on page 4 perry beaton/special Ellen Goldfinch is all smiles after winning Ottawa Little Theatre’s playwrighting contest.' £ buds do the walking - fine dining is a Townships tradition Le Sardauve a taste of France in Coaticook PERRY BEATON/SPECIAL - Co-owner Sabine Lenevannau and chef Regis Bedos create an atmosphere that is vraiement française at Le Sardauve.By Sunil Mahtani In a historic little home built in 1875 is an elegant eatery specializing in the cuisine of France. This is not wannabe-French, mind you.Everything is authentic — from the accent of owner Sabine Lenevannau, who serves clients and runs the restaurant with husband Jean-Luc, to the rich, subtle flavours chef Regis Bedos infuses in his fine food. The Lenevannaus arrived from Brittany in June and took over the restaurant on Child Street from its previous owners on July 1.They have retained the delicate atmosphere of the small restaurant, which seats about 35 people. The peach hues of the tablecloths and walls are a pleasant accent to the wooden doors and chairs.Attention is paid to detail — the wine glasses and water goblets are lined up diagonally across the centre of each table, on the side are domeshaped oil lamps, and sitting atop each lily white oversized plate is a peach napkin around which is a napkin-holder with Le Sardauve printed on it.Patrons are given a modest, varied menu from which they may create their meal from two table d’hôtes or à la carte choices.Menu I costs $18 and includes your choice of two appetizers, two entrées, a number of desserts and coffee, tea or tisane.Menu II features different choices of appetizers and entrées, a plate of French cheeses, dessert and a hot beverage. The promise of great things to come was tempered somewhat by the Fish Soup. This was a bland, watery broth that did not really taste like anything, much less fish. The terrific garlic butter and French toasted bread it was served with could not save it.The Rabbit and Lentil Terrine in Porto Jelly was far more successful. This was a light, refreshing cold pâté with chunks of rabbit encased in a mild jelly bursting with lentils. It was served with leeks, red pepper and salad. Also wonderful was the Salad of Smoked Duck Filet and Soft-Boiled Quail Eggs. The tender elasticity of the smoked duck and the smooth creaminess of the quail eggs was an idyllic marriage of flavours. The salad it was served with was topped with hazelnuts and a fine balsamic vinaigrette.Simply delectable. With the arrival of the main dishes, we knew the fine cuisine was no fluke. The Roasted Pike-Perch Filet with Spinach Cream was a melt-in-your-mouth taste sensation, tender and creamy. It was served with a tasty carrot mousse that retained all the flavour of the vegetable.Unfortunately, the broccoli on the side was overdone and fell apart as soon as I tasted it.The Wild Boar Stew was a fine alternative to beef.It was firm, yet tender and cooked in a bold red wine sauce. It was also served with broccoli, as well as Potatoes Dauphinaise, which was a fine accompaniment to the boar. The Cheese Plate was a revelation, one of the best I’ve seen in a Townships restaurant.Patrons are given their choice of any or all of six cheeses, ranging from mild, light and creamy cheeses to the stronger, more pungent goat’s cheese and the king of blue cheeses, Roquefort.Tasted in order, it was a sublime journey full of flavour and variety. The cheeses were chosen intelligently by people who know exactly what they’re doing. The desserts were also outstanding. The Tarte Tatin was a delicious caramelized apple tart with a dainty scoop of vanilla ice-cream in the cen- tre.Quite an attractive dish, it also featured slivered apples which dug into the ice-cream and divine candied orange peel. The Crème Brûlée was impressive both for the sheer enormity of the circular dessert and the subtle flavour of chicory laced throughout it.The slightly hardened sugar coating combined with the smooth, creamy centre for a satisfying flavour. It was also served with candied orange peel that merged well with the cream. Two table d’hôtes — one from Menu I and one from Menu II — cost $50, not including wine or tip.The Lenevannaus are introducing a new menu starting Saturday, Dec.11.Some of the mouth-watering dishes include Truite Meunière (with lemon butter and almonds); Veal Piccata with Basil; Country-Style Pheasant; Filet Mignon of Pork served with Mustard; and Stuffed Chicken with a Sundried Tomato Sauce.Winter specialties include the popular Raclette; Fondue Savoyarde (three cheeses and white wine); and Fondue Bourguignonne.Lunchtime items include Salmon, Chicken or Chef Salad, Quiche Lorraine and Spaghetti Bolognaise from between $5 and $6.50.Lunch specials featuring the chefs daily creations are $8.75.The service is excellent at this charming eatery. The warmth of the hosts and the cuisine makes it a fine way to spend a cool winter’s evening.Le Sardauve is located at 302 Child in Coaticook. It is open Monday to Saturday for lunch from 11:30 A.M.to 2:30 p.m.and every day for dinner starting at 5:30 p.m.The restaurant takes direct payment by In- TERAC, BUT DOES NOT CURRENTLY TAKE CREDIT CARDS.To MAKE RESERVATIONS, CALL (819) 849-9889.Student card & Golden Age discount • Smoked Goldfinch created the play for two friends."I have two very close friends who are actresses - Brenda Hartwell and Petra Kixmuller.I wanted to put the two of them in a play together and I came up with this idea of one woman hiding another woman during a time of political strife," Goldfinch explained."Petra read the first draft and she said You know you're writing about the holocaust - let's face it.Why don't you go back and do some research?' "So that's what I did." "It turned out to be a rural farm wife hiding a Jewish woman unvoluntarily," Goldfinch elaborated. Her husband is a member of the underground and she is not. He's been hiding Jewish people in their home. The play opens with a member of the underground telling Marthe that her husband has been arrested and there's a Jewish woman hidden in her home and Marthe wants her out.During the course of the play, they get to know one another.Esther, the Jewish woman, is from a well-to-do background and Marthe, teaches her to bake bread." "Brenda Hartwell taught me to bake bread, to get the kneading right and the timing right with the talking.I have had tremendous help," Goldfinch enthused.Goldfinch also extends her thanks to members of her writer’s group, whom she says gave her some “wonderful hints” on her early drafts.Choromondo sings benefit concert for East Timor on Saturday North Hatley will ring with the sound of music from all over the world when Choromondo, a 20-voice world music woman’s choir, takes to the stage in a benefit concert for East Timor.Directed by musician/composer Allyn Harris, Choromondo will sing songs from South Africa, Latvia, Bosnia, Japan, Russia, Korea, Macedonia, India, France, North America and more. The concert takes place at the Unitarian Church in North Hatley on Saturday, Dec.11 at 8 p.m.Suggested donation is $10 and includes refreshments afterwards. For more information, call 819-876-5682.SEE WHAT LAURA SECORD HAS IN STORE FOR YOU AND GET A FREE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT WITH ANY PURCHASE OF $20* OR MORE.HEY MOM & DAD! TALK OF THE Townships Francophone entertainment in the Townships December 10-December 16, 1999 page 5 french connection Jean-Pierre Ferland.pour l’amour! Bon anniversaire donc à tous les amants de la littérature d’ici! is the time The Record & Alexander Galt invite you to drop off your non-perishable food and donations (before December 16th) for: “The Alexander Galt Christmas Basket Campaign” The baskets will benefit families within the ETSB School Board.Drop-off points: The Record 257 Queen St Lennoxville Alexander Galt Rte 108 Lennoxville 'pteMc ! TALK OF THE Townships Record December 10-December 16, 1999 page 7 A world of adventure, comedy and drama awaits movies Shakespeare’s dream and De Bont’s nightmare New Video releases reviewed By Paraskevi Mazarakiotis Record Correspondent A Midsummer Night’s Dream Director Michael Hoffman’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, based on the comic play by William Shakespeare, is about the mysteries and complexities of love.Hermia (Anna Friel) is in love with Lysander (Dominic West), but she has been promised to Demetrius (Christian Bale) by her father.Helena (Calista Flockhart), Hermia’s best friend, is in love with Demetrius, but he does not acknowledge her existence. The fairy god, Oberon (Rupert Everett), with his assistant Puck (Stanley Tucci), attempt to help the four lovers.During the execution of the plan, a misunderstanding occurs between Puck and Oberon and things become even more complex for the lovers. When it comes to love, there is a thin line between reality and illusion.Love has an intoxicating effect that blurs our rationality. This is why, according to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, lovers and madmen have much in common.Unfortunately, this version of Shakespeare’s play fails to involve the viewer. The play thrives on physical comedy, but Hoffman’s scenes are too static to fully capture the humour and vitality of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Haunting Joan De Bont’s The Haunting, which is based on Shirley Jackson’s story “The Haunting of the Hill House,” has much in common with the films of Alfred Hitchcock and the stories of Edgar Allan Poe.It is an eerie thriller that also delves into the supernatural.Liam Neeson plays a psychiatrist who is conducting an experiment on the dynamics of fear.Isolation is essential for his research and he chooses to conduct his experiment at Hill House, the ideal location since its historical background is based on a frightening legend.Or is it just a legend? The house in The Haunting is immense: Its doors, staircases, statues and fireplaces are oversized, which makes the characters seem tiny in comparison. The size of the house and its objects demonstrate its power. As the characters walk through the gloomy corridors, the camera creeps up behind them, creating the sensation that something is spying on them. The set and the camera work successfully manage to frighten us.Wild Wild West Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, this comedy unites the Western and Science Fiction genres. In the narratives of Westerns, the American cowboy comes to the rescue of the land and its community: good triumphs over evil.fli'¥ feifiiis!
