Sherbrooke St., Magog 819-868-1122 472 Knowlton Rd., Knowlton 450-243-6692 The Largest Circulation Weekly in Brome—Missisquoi New book highlights youth ministry a DAVID ANDERSON/SPECIAL Donald Davidson is looking forward to finally putting up anew sign at St.Luke’s in Waterloo.A sign of things to come at St.Luke’s By Wendy Denman Record Correspondent For almost 30 years, the Quebec/Sherbrooke Presbytery of the United Church of Canada has supported a full-time youth worker to oversee the region’s youth ministry.A new book — Take off Your Shoes — detailing the long-term results of this ministry is being launched on May 1.“We wrote the book because the ministry touched so many youth over the years.Hundreds of people were deeply changed by it in so many ways,” Tom Edmonds, a retired United Church minister, told The Brome County News this week."You could say the ministry really became a youth movement. Those involved are still talking about it 25 years later, still excited by their experiences with it.Something very important went on and we decided to write the history of it,” Edmonds, who co-authored the book with Trudy Harvey and Émilie Revil, became the incumbent at Granby United in 1991 after many years of varied experiences within the Church, including 10 years as a missionary in Brazil and time spent overseeing and working at the Church’s National office.“I was immediately impressed by the youth work in the Presbytery — it was unique to employ a full-time youth worker and it gave the youth ministry emphasis and continuity.I found my involvement greatly satisfying and very enjoyable. It is fitting that my long and varied career should end with writing this book,” he continued.“In the book we try to capture some of the enthusiasm of the youth and the essence of the experience which has so many facets — spirituality, music, companionship, leadership, facing the is- sues of the day.The first part of the book is devoted to anecdotes. We contacted as many participants as we could and let them tell their own story — because the youth ministry was always dictated by the youth — it was theirs, they owned it.” Along with special gatherings and meetings, the youth ministry had three yearly high points — two weekend conferences that rotated at locations in schools throughout the large region covered by the Presbytery and camp in the summer.“The youth were involved in every aspect of planning these events, part of the program was to bring forward youth leaders and many of these youth are still very involved in the Church today,” says Rev.Edmonds.The second part of the book details the history of the youth ministry.“The development of the youth movement has much to do with the historical backdrop of what was happening in Quebec in the 1970s.The social, economic and political atmosphere within which the movement developed - the program didn’t spring from a vacuum. We’ve also included information about church structure and minutes from meetings involving the youth ministry," he continued. The book covers the period from 1973 to 2000.“We stopped at 2000, because the ministry is continuing and this book is a history.During that time frame there were four youth workers and we’ve included biographies, as well as a table listing all the events, when and where they took place, key documents such as evaluation sheets and facsimiles of camp flyers, bulletins — we’ve made the book as complete a history as possible.” See pages, Pages 8 By Wendy Denman Record Correspondent Feeling their church deserved a sign befitting its position as a historic monument, the congregation of St.Luke’s Anglican in Waterloo has been building a new one — brick by brick.“We’ve been selling bricks at $6.25 a piece,” said Donald Davidson, the church’s deputy people’s warden and designer of the new sign.“We’ve collected $1,800 that way and with the help of a number of local businesses, we’ve almost made our goal and hope to begin construction soon.” See Bricks, Page 7 , niiwo k ?SPRING IS HERE ?ISO minuits MO: (Solans only v or Unlimited Monthly Hembershl/ Open Mon-Sat 8 am-8 pm Ctrl by SAE .58 Principale N, Sutton ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA Brome County News Wednesday, April 21, 2004 page 3 SQ^brings anti drugs message to Mansonville By Murielle Parkes Record Correspondent Mansonville On a recent Friday evening, two patrol cars — both with the Sûreté du Quebec’s Magog detachment — pulled into the Citizen Advocacy Maison des jeunes in Mansonville.Officers Claude LeBel, Philippe-Antoine Raymond and intern Vincent Proulx were on an important mission. In this case, to make an easy catch — the attention of 40 youth and adults participating in a Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)-sponsored workshop on the topic of drugs.Instead of handcuffs and enforcement, LeBel and his colleagues used facts, figures and drug display panels showing a variety of common hallucinogens, stimulants, depressants and narcotics. In the Townships, the most common drug is marijuana.Hash oil, toxic and dangerous, is also bad here, LeBel said. However, cocaine is the most troublesome for developing severe dependency.LeBel, who has been a presence in the municipality for the past two years, has a special affinity for youth. From 1982 to 1986, he was a youth director at a Maison des jeunes in Ste-Julie.He studied philosophy and originally wanted to be a teacher. Now with the SQ his specialty is helping young people.“Illicit drugs are dangerous,” warned LeBel.“They lead to many problems, including criminality and suicide.” Maroons Rule The Rink COURTESY WATERLOO MAROONS BANTAM A The Bantam A Waterloo Maroons can certainly pat themselves on the back after a stellar season. They started strong and ended even stronger with very few dips in between. They finished 14-3 -1.They are currently riding a 10-game winning streak including winning the playoff title and becoming the Eastern Township regional champions. They will be participating in Quebec’s inter-regional tournament in Gatineau. The Maroons participated in two tournaments this season, one in St-Georges de Beauce and the other in Windsor, each time reaching the finals.Coach Larry Wheeler has been a part of Waterloo hockey for more than 35 years.First, as a defenceman until the age of 27, and second as a coach for the last 18.Also, last weekend they were the winners of the Bromont Avalanche Tournament.Pictured are (back row, left to right): Zachary Bourbeau Binning, Dave Binning (assistant coach), J.P.Boutin (assistant at a suicide call. The workshop was a welcome respite. The group had plenty of questions, including one about Rohypnol, the date-rape drug — keep drinks guarded, at all times was the crime fighting trio’s response.Another young person questioned the advisability of reporting a crop of marijuana planted on “borrowed” land.“Don’t worry about reprisals, growers want to keep a low profile,” LeBel said. There were also queries about drug trafficking. All drugs affect behaviour. However, genetic modification has made some much more toxic than before.A case in point is marijuana, now considerably more potent than it was 20 years ago, said LeBel.Reception by the young people was enthusiastic — they want the SQ team to return, next time, to stay long enough to play a few games of pool and ping-pong.For LeBel, it’s another opportunity to MURIELLE PARKES/CORRESPONDENT Officer Claude LeBel used facts, figures and drug display panels.keep in touch with the municipality, a priority of his,
