TALK OF m THE7 .lownsnips The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships November 12-November 18, 1999 Wmmm DELAHAYE/FONDATION JEAN-PIERRE PERREAULT Marc Boivin and Sandra Lapierre in a moment from a work by the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault dance school.By Catherine Dean Record Correspondent Sherbrooke Lovers of the arts are doubly blessed with Jean-Pierre Perreault's visit to Bishop's University for they can view both his visual art and dance.Les Années de pèlerinage, performed by La Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault, is inspired by Franz Liszt's second book of Years of Pilgrimage, probably Liszt's most romantic work. For Perreault, Les Années de pèlerinage is a departure."Three things are different for me," Perreault said."I am using a much smaller space than I usually use.In the past I have worked with 12 to 50 dancers and I think it corresponded to a place where I was as a person.I needed a more intimate relationship with the interpreters, and I deal with fewer people and I use classical music." Liszt's music is something Perreault had been living with for a long time."I listened to it for eight years - that piece was in me and somehow I realized it was time to do Les Années de pèlerinage." Drawing is central to Perreault's choreography."I travel.I always have my notebooks and drawing books and I was on tour in Holland on trains and drawing Dutch trees - from one country to another the trees are so different, especially in Europe where they are manicured. As I was drawing trees, I turned the page and the ink went through and I realized the trunk of the tree was divided into two spaces," said Perreault, demonstrating by means of a drawing how a tree can resemble a building - part of an urban landscape.see dance, page 5 Yule Fest Market On the four Saturdays before Christmas starting Nov.27, the annual Yule Fest Market will be held in the North Hatley Community Hall from 10:30 to 4 daily. This event is an offshoot from the summer Farmer's Market. This year, close to 20 artisans will be participating, selling wood carvings, pottery, jewelry, candles, home furniture, tinware, folk art, knitted items, hand-carved angels, watercolours, chocolates and foods. The artisans come from North Hatley and surrounding areas. One room of the hall will also be dedicated to activities with young children along the four themes picked for the event - Advent, Yuletide, Hanukkah and O’Tannenbaum. This will include crafts and storytime with a local Girl Guide group.Look What’s Inside The search is on for the best Chinese restaurant in the Townships. The Bishop’s University Drama Department production of Picnic is a real joy.Lily is a terrific French play at the Petit théâtre de Sherbrooke. The Mi’kmaq “Legend of the First Rabbit” is published with paintings inspired by song.Murder, mayhem and the Big Daddy blues ¦ abound in new video 55 releases. Are you fed up that the government takes 50% of your savings?Investors Broup If you have over $50.000 in Savings, You Must attend this free educational workshop! Picnic PERRY BEATON/SPECIAL Bien Gietz and Nick Haraszty discover a mutual joy of dance in Picnic.By Steven Warburton Lennoxville For anyone looking for a good healthy mix of comedy and drama, Picnic might just be the ticket.William Inge’s 1953 Pulitzer Prize-winning play is not only a delight to watch, it has some poignant things to say about how people judge each other based on physical appearance.Madge Owens (Ellen Gietz) is a very pretty girl and she is constantly lambasted with compliments everywhere she goes.As a result, she has come to see herself as just a shadow, someone who might not even be real. This is constantly reiterated by her overbearing mother, Flo (Sara Brady), and her boyfriend, Alan Seymour (John Rasmussen.) Even Madge’s little sister, Millie (Megan Bray-ford), is a constant reminder of her physical beauty, although for Millie, these comments come more as jealous snubs than outright admiration. The play’s action revolves around a picnic the Owens’ are attending and the arrival of Hal Carter (Nick Haraszty), a boarder who has only recently arrived in the neighbourhood and is staying with the Owens’ next door neighbour, Helen Potts (Treyse Farrant.) Hal is a good looking young man who, like Madge, has been taught through his life that his physical appearance is his most valuable asset.Unlike Madge, however, who draws into shyness, Hal tells wild stories and becomes the showman everyone expects him to be.When he and his old school buddy Alan are getting reacquainted, he tells an outrageous story about going to Hollywood and getting rejected because of his bad teeth and then getting robbed in the back of a Cadillac by a couple of martini-drinking, gun-toting “babes.” see picnic, next page Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships stage Areal Sunshine Theatre Productions Knowlton Pub Playhouse Nov.17-28 a comedy by Ferenc Molnar adapted by P.G.Wodehouse directed by Sunil Mahtani starring Heather Coutts Donald Wilson Patrick Godon Doug Hooper Brendan Rhodes Terry Millard and Sunil Mahtani set and lighting design by Bill Jarand costumes by Kate Wisdom page 4 November 12-November 18, 1999 TALK OF THE ToTPtlshipS ¦ TH1-m Record v< stage Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships Mandragore creates a lovable local monster Marie & Friends join others in benefit By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Sutton Sutton’s Mandragore Theatre will perform Frankenstein, an original play by Patrick Campbell. The author, who is also the owner, producer and director of the theatre, said the comedy is based loosely on the Mary Shelley classic. The play follows the exploits of Dr.Frankenstein and his side-kick Igor as they pilfer a brain to give life to their own creation.Campbell says his monster, unlike that of Shelley and its many Hollywood incarnations, is lovable. He is also a local.“Dr.Frankenstein creates the monster in Sutton, near Mountain View Cemetery,” said Campbell, who also stars as the demented Doc.Soon he and Igor (Larry Hastings Jr.) discover the brain they have given their monster (Lynden Gilker) is not quite up to surgical standards. When they create a second, female monster (Marie-Josée Samson), the two monsters do what any respectable newly undead would do - run off together, leaving Frankenstein and Igor to ponder the nature of their acts.Performances will be held at 8 p.m.Saturdays and 2 p.m.Sundays from Nov.13 to 21 at the theatre located at 12A Main Street in Sutton. For ticket information, contact the theatre at (450) 538-0572.Marie 8i Friends will take part in a fund-raising show at the Granada Theatre along with local talents Olivier Brousseau, Tribal, Alexandre Leclerc and Stéphane Baillargeon on Friday, Nov.19, at 8 p.m.This show featuring young local talent will be presented by Les Productions King-Wellington for the benefit of La Magie de Noel, an event that will bring a smile to the faces of more than 250 impoverished children on Dec.12.Contributing to multiple musical events such as Cherry River music shows, and the TV show “Visage d’artiste” aired on Vidéotron Sherbrooke cable, Alexandre Branchaud (keyboards, sax), Francois Laperle (guitars), Karl Surprenant (bass) and Sébastien Coté (drums) have joined young lead singer Marie-Claude Guay to form the band Marie & Friends. This group presents a colourful show ranging from pop music to jazz, Motown and R&B, as well as their own original songs.Tickets cost $10 and are available at the Granada Theatre, 53 Wellington Street North, Sherbrooke, and at all Admission outlets.Tel: 1-800-361-4595.Director Hodges brings this wonderful play to life igton Post SATURDAY, NOVI mzz uocaunNO r.timui Picnic: CONTINUED FROM LAST PAGE This isn’t an easy task to pull off because a theatre audience tends to believe that all characters on stage are “telling the truth” whenever they speak their lines, no matter how preposterous the story may be.Haraszty pulled his lies off because he knew there was an underlying pathos to his character, the desire to be accepted and the further, albeit untested, knowledge that the 'Hal1 people liked was the fake movie star and not the real 'Hal.' If anything, Picnic relates Shakespeare’s advice “Know thyself.” When Hal is around, Alan tells everyone of his daring escapades on the old school football field. When he isn’t around, Alan paints a much truer, and sadder, picture: Although Hal was a phenomenal athlete, the other kids at school didn’t think much of him. They found him to be an arrogant child who didn’t study because he believed he could make it through life on his looks. It was perfectly natural that Madge and Hal would be attracted to each other.Watching them fall for each other was a horrible tug-of-war match in the souls of the audience. We see how much the slightly nerdy Alan loves Madge and we do want him to be happy, but we also see that Madge’s needs are not being met. When she and Hal share a moment on the porch, Hal finally comes clean. He admits he’s been fabricating tales about his life and that he never was a champion diver as he claimed to be.In reality, he’s spent time in reformatory schools and was disowned by his family. Not exactly a spectacular upbringing, but he 'i t'l Freaky Stories (R) mU Waltons fPT71 That’s Hockey.7:30 PM CD B Entertainment Tonight CD Wheel of Fortune B On the Road Again B Trains d’enfer B Jeopardy!
