BCS board reacts to association By Rita Legault Sherbrooke Management of Bishop’s College School cannot comment on a truth and reconciliation association that has been set up to try and get an apology from Bishop’s College School for students who complain they were molested by a chaplain during the fifties and sixties.BCS board chairman David Stenason told the Record his hands are tied because the matter is currently before the courts.“The issue is there is an application for a class-action suit that has been filed in court against Bishop’s College School,” he said, noting the damage claims pile up to tens of millions of dollars against the private boarding school.“If this went to court and it was approved, the entire existence of BCS would be threatened,” Stenason told the Record, noting the school’s first priority is defending itself against the class-action lawsuit.The BCS Truth and Reconciliation Association Inc.was founded recently by former SEE ABUSE PAGE 3 Scooter collides with bus AL BARBER A 15-year-oId girl escaped with minor injuries after colliding with a public transit bus along Portland Boulevard.The young girl, riding a scooter around 2:29 p.m., was /allowing the bus too closely, said Sherbrooke police, and rear-ended the bus while it was making a stop near Jacques-Cartier Boulevard.She was taken to the CHUS-Fleurimont for precautionary reasons. page 2 Thursday, August 21, 2008 ; ¦THE i RECORD Sherbrooke forced to tighten belt Expenses heading for $6.8 million over budget By Joe Strizzi Sherbrooke The City of Sherbrooke announced required expenditure cuts in order to avoid finishing the 2008 year in the red as operating costs are on pace for a $6.8 million deficit.Barnard Tanguay, president of the executive committee, said at last Monday’s council meeting that the ‘fat,’ or unnecessary expenses will have to be cut away from municipal services and certain re-pavement projects will be pushed back to next year forcing residents to ‘pull up their socks’ and push through the inconveniences this may cause.Last year’s accumulated surplus of $7.6 million will be used to offset some of the overhead amassed thus far and balance this year’s $216 million budget.Approximately $3 million will be recouped from municipal services, with another $2.3 million from road works, and another $1.25 million from the surplus in order to balance the budget by year’s end.Tanguay said at the meeting that the reasons behind the over expenditure were out of the city’s hands.“It seems as though everything has gone wrong in the same year.Higher gas prices, lower than expected Hydro revenues, and snow removal costs exceeded expectations by $2 million all contributed to this problem.” Four-year-old Anthony Green has given The Record his masterpieces depicting your weather forecast.¦111 Summer collections of hope PERRY BEATON The Fondation Roch Guertin is launching the first edition of its summer collection of non-perishable goods today and continuing until August 28.“Poverty and hunger don’t take a vacation," says foundation director-general Denis Fortier, “and neither does the Fondation Roch-Guertin.“Lat year, we were only able to satisfy about 50 per cent of the demand while distributing over 1400 baskets." Collection baskets will be placed in over 20 Sherbrooke businesses, primarily grocery stores, encouraging shoppers to donate a few non-perishable items.Participating merchants include Provigo, Maxi, Super-C, IGA Metro, Costco, and Prodym.Finally, a break Finally a high pressure system will dominate the forecast!
