Brome County NEWS HMT\ new addition complete Tuesday, November 23, 2010 L’Hameau Oasis Mass-O-Thon for youth By Doug Hooper f » jhe Scottsmore Road between West I Brome and Cowansville is a quiet •X.country road that runs at right angles to Highway 139.It’s a pleasant diversion that offers many lovely vistas of the surrounding countryside, as well as several unique sites of local interest. There’s a round barn on the east side of the road shortly after turning onto it from West Brome. The barn is in excellent shape and is a prime example of the sort of construction that was a popular type in our area and very rare anywhere else.Several of the farms along the road are prosperous and picturesque, and the land appears fertile and abundant. One site that might be overlooked is the modest cluster of buildings not far from Cowansville that were once a part of Camp Sacre Coeur. The Camp is now L’hameau Oasis, where young people can find help when confronted by difficulties that find them homeless, unemployed or otherwise in distress.“The camp was created by a religious community that wanted to bring youth DOUG HOOPER One of several unique scarecrows created at L’hameau Oasis.from the south shore of Montreal - overcome problems and go back to youth that had problems - and put them school,” said L’hameau Coordinator in a natural environment to help them Véronique Lanoix.Five or six years ago the site was offered for sale, but social worker Jean Claude Ribou, who lived next door and who had always worked at the camp, wanted to ensure that youth would continue to be served in this rural setting.“He formed an association of youth organizations in the region: youth houses, carrefours jeunesses emploi, the CSSS, and Townshippers’ and created a project for the youth of Brome-Mis-sisquoi,” said Lanoix. One of the partners is Les Jardins de la Terre, an organization that, among many things, provides organic produce to subscribers on the Internet.According to the organization’s website, “This new youth community, whose roots are based in agro-ecology and preservation of the environment, offers a whole host of possibilities for anybody who wants to discover nature and environmental conservation. Many local youth organizations have joined in this project to develop the Hameau.” “The Hameau is a centre to help social re-insertion and professional re-insertion.So the kids would come here who Cont’d on page 9 Townships musicians come home By Doug Hooper Like the cobbler who ignored his own children’s footwear while providing superior shoes to others, we often ignore what is right in front of us.The Eastern Townships is an area rich in culture. We have the highest concentration of artists anywhere in the country, but we often take for granted a plethora of local talent all around us.The importance of cultural activities is becoming clear to governments at all levels as people realize that it is artists who express the soul of a region, perhaps even before anyone else recognizes it.It is art galleries, theatres and musical events that attract people to a city or town, and although artists may work for the love of their art and not for something as crass as a paycheck, the economy thrives when art thrives. One could think that the large number of artists living in the region might have something to do with the natural beauty of the surroundings or the proximity to cultural centres like Montreal or even New York.Others might suggest it has something to do with the water.Whatever the reason, we are fortunate to be able to enjoy their work from the source (no pun intended).Sarah Biggs and Amos Joannides, townships singer-songwriters, will perform in concert at Salle Wilfred et Gerard Pelletier (Couer du Village) in Sutton on Saturday, November 27 at 8 p.m.Neither of these young musicians is a stranger to the area, but both have returned after prolonged absences.Biggs was born in the Eastern Townships, where she began playing guitar and writing songs in her early teens. She returned a full decade after she left, and now lives in West Brome with her husband and their two children. After two CDs of original songs based on her life experiences, with rich folk-and-blues nuances that characterize her music, Sarah is now working on a third CD.“My intention is to reflect my Eastern Townships roots, to capture that Cont’d on page 12 Sarah Biggs COWANSVILLE rarer* 165 rue de Salaberry _ 450 263-8888 Cell: 450 777-6323 Jean-François Levesque ventes@cowansvilte.toyota.ca Sales Manage Direct 450-263-6855 ext.244 I Produits ¦ Pétroliers LAVICNE Call now for your fill-up for the winter heating season HEATING OIL HUILE À CHAUFFAGE GAZ - Plattsburgh Cont’d from page 3 States is a multi-billion dollar industry that benefited immensely from the fear resulting from the 9-11 attacks.Since those attacks, there have been no successful terrorist acts in the country. There are some who point to homeland security as the reason for that. Many people ignore the fact that all of the attempted attacks using airliners have been foiled by stupidity or luck and not by expensive security measures. The shoe bomber was a moron; the underwear bomber nearly burned himself alive before a passenger subdued him, and the recent discovery of bombs on cargo planes occurred because one of the conspirators confessed to authorities. The fact is that airport security measures are nothing more than theatrical displays aimed at easing the minds of jittery travelers. In truth, there is nothing that can be done to halt the truly determined terrorist. And we should change nothing because of fear of attack.Nevertheless, it’s good to keep a vigilant stance and comforting to know that at least security will be able to see the bad guys naked too! I turned my back and left it all.I could not stay another day.To laugh, to love, to work or play.Tasks left undone must stay that way; I found that place at the close of day.If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy.A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss.Oh yes, these things, I too will miss.Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I savored much; Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.Perhaps my time seems all to brief; Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.Lovingly remembered by: FAMILY MOM & DAD MICHAEL BURNHAM, SON.MURELYN & FAMILY PIERRE & RHONDA & FAMILY EDDY & LISA & FAMILY Death Betty Jean DOMINGUE MONETTE 1933-2010 Passed away peacefully, at the BMP Hospital in Cowansville, November 17th 2010, at the age of 77.Life long resident of Stanbridge East, was presently residing at Residence Lambert, in Bedford.Betty was the beloved wife of late Ben Monette, loving mother of Graydon (Eleanor), David (Betty), Lance (Chantal) also survived by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She will also be missed by brother and sister in-laws, other relatives and friends.Special thanks to Dr.Lalla, the BMP second floor staff, and all the great care at Residence Lambert.A grave side service will be held at a later date at the St-James Anglican Cemetery in Stanbridge East.Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.Forms are available at the funeral Complex or online at: www.cancer.ca Entrusted to the: BROME-MISSISQUOI Funeral Complex 215 River Street, Bedford, Qc 450.248.2911 Condolences may be sent via our web site www.complexebm.com QCNA Blanket Classified Ads Antiques ABRACADABRA turn your hidden treasures into ready cash.International buyer wants to purchase your antiques, paintings, china, crystal, gold, silverware, jewellery, rare books, sports, movies, postcards, coins, stamps, records.514-501-9072.Business Opportunities JEWELLERY SALES OPPORTUNITY!
