INSIDE v MOMMY YEAH, CAM WE?W£ LLTAKE CARE0F WHAT PIP TOUR MOM W?K MMM.ITALL PEPENPS Please?WELL/ GO amp ASK YOUR fW/THEN A PET IS A LOT OF W0RKANP RESPONSIBILITY' BOY5.-1 Saturday: Rain.Low 10.High 18. : mi—ihk — - RECORD Wednesday, May 28, 2008 page 3 Sudden aggression? He might be suicidal Staff Sherbrooke Do you know a man who’s suddenly become a lot more aggressive? On the edge of violence? He might be thinking of killing himself.“Men suffering from that kind of distress show it very differently than women do,” said Louise Levesque, the head of the suicide prevention group JEV1.“Women [often] show their sadness.” The majority of men react quite differently. And the aggression may push those close to them to stay away, because they don’t understand that it may be a reaction to suicidal thoughts - and that their friend needs help. That’s why JEVI launched an education campaign Tuesday to teach people how to recognize and help men who are having such a hard time seeing life as worthwhile that they’re considering suicide.Eighty per cent of those who kill themselves in Quebec are male, and 45 die annually in the Estrie region.“It’s because of these numbers that the Réso Prevention Suicide was born,” states a release. It’s a new coalition bringing together social and health service providers, youth groups, employers and others who pledge to learn and to teach. The anti-suicide campaign is aimed at boys and men between 15 and 40 years of age.Levesque said women, once they make the leap and ask for formal help from an aid agency, can cope emotionally with an appointment that’s three or four days away.Men can’t; if they finally convince themselves to make that call to, say, a suicide-prevention group, they need to someone to talk to them right away.“If you ask a man to call back or come back later for an appointment, he’s not going to do it.You need to talk to him as soon as possible — he wants action right away.” Those who want to help men cope with their depression or suicidal thoughts must adapt their responses to the way men think, said Lévesque.Lévesque also said women are more able to ask for formal help; men tend to confide in a colleague or friend. And that’s why one of the four new projects launched yesterday is a Sentinal program.“Sentinals” are people in the workplace who have their ear to the ground, to whom people often go to confide.“Like the cook, the secretary, the trusted person people go to to talk,” said Lévesque. The Réso is offering six-hour training sessions to such people who want to volunteer for the training.“It’s information on how to find and refer those people who are in trouble,” said Lévesque.Special male-centred training is also being offered to those whose job or volunteerism involves dealing with suicidal people, to help them understand better how men cope (or don’t) and how to really help. There will also be special two-hour meetings every two weeks for those who live with or are close to a man who is suicidal, where trained people will listen and offer tips on how to respond and where to go to find the help that’s needed.“These are for people who call and say, ‘1 just don’t know what to do anymore.’” “Right now we have no English training," said Lévesque.“We haven’t had any requests for it.But if people want it, we can certainly look into it.” (The English section on the website includes a note that reads: “JEVI’s services are not always all available in English.Sadly, response in English depends on the bilingual staff available at the moment.Thank you for your understanding.” Call the number below to volunteer.) A guide to helpful service organizations is posted on JEVI’s website (click on the Réso button).Lévesque said it does include groups that offer English-language services.“But if you see a group that should be there but isn’t, tell us.This is a living document. We’ll be pleased to add it to the listings.” To volunteer or make a suggestion for the listings, JEVI can be reached at 819-564-7349.The 24-hour helpline is at 1-866-277-3553.The website is at www.jevi.qc.ca.¦ •m y# -é yèm- Game Plan COURTESY Sherbrooke’s bid for the 2013 Canadian Summer Games jumped another hurdle Tuesday.François Rouleau, a municipal councillor and president of Sport Excellence Sherbrooke, presented Mayor Jean Perrault with the technical proposal that will be submitted to the Canada Games Council.Marc Denault, president of the city’s sports and leisure committee, as well as Julie Nadeau, sports and activities coordinator for Tourism Sherbrooke, were also in attendance for the presentation that outlines plans for things like competition venues and athlete housing.New lawyer for Dutchak A return to court in September By Joe Strizzi Sherbrooke The man accused of voicing death threats to coworkers at Bishop’s University appeared in court Tuesday morning with a new lawyer.Christian Raymond, of the firm Dussault Raymond, represented former cafeteria employee Brian Dutchak at a brief hearing at the Sherbrooke Palais de Justice.“Mr.Dutchak decided to change counsel, and has employed our services,” said Raymond.“His case is being handled by Mr.(Michel) Dussault, but 1 stood in for him (yesterday) as he was involved with another case in a different courtroom.” Reasons for the change in Dutchak’s legal representation were not given.Dussault takes over the case from legal aid lawyer Jean Couture, who had requested a psychiatric evaluation be done on his client. That assessment ultimately determined that the defendant was fit to stand ______ trial. The 32-year-old Dutchak will appear in court again on Sept.2, when lawyers are expected to present their cases. The defendant was released on the condition that he continue to abide by provisions that include no travel to the university, nor contact with any staff members, as well as attending medical followups with a CLSC.Dutchak was arrested at his home in Sherbrooke on Feb.16, after he allegedly told several cafeteria coworkers that he intended to “blow everyone up” and become a “famous killer”.UNIVERSITÉ IM1 BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY Because you love their lives Mixlii Ak-il nil’ I'l.io'l'.'l uilh ,'in iMnciLS iu \ hnllinc linknl !u Mmr chillis miilii al nrmil call 1-86(1-734-942;”) III Visit WUAV,l!H-|lkitll'!l.l ¦! v Medic Alert Lets You Live Life The Spring Convocation of Bishop's University will be held at Bishop’s University in the borough of Lennoxville, in the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec, on Saturday, May 31, 2008, for the purpose of conferring honorary degrees and degrees in course.Yves Jodoin • Registrar page 4 Wednesday, May 28, 2008 RECORD COURTESY/ FILE g' M France Bornant in the House of Commons.Gasoline Cont’d from Page 1 drivers start thinking about vacations? In the case of Eastern Townships Tourism, media officer Danie Beliveau said the stiffer gas pump prices may actually be a good thing.“We have no worries about the gas prices affecting tourism,” she said yesterday.“It’s like Christmas.People budget a certain amount.People have been waiting and hoping for their vacations all winter and they are not going to cancel everything just because of the gas.” Beliveau said that after examining what a family would pay in gas to get to the Gaspé for a vacation this summer, as opposed to last year, the difference is a measly $20 and she does not believe that people will sacrifice much needed R & R.“I really don’t see it making a difference, but if it does it could be a good one,” she said.“For the people who won’t be able to afford the gas they may decide to not go as far. That’s good for us.People will still go on vacation, but instead of leaving the Townships maybe they will find something fun for the whole family right here." With gas prices expected to hit $1.50 this summer, Lennoxville gas station owner Larry Paradis says big tanks make for big sales.“Last week I had two work trucks pull in to get gas and each one was over $900,” said the GL Paradis Garage owner.“Within a short time of being open I had already done all my business of the day. It’s only a $22 profit for me, but it is funny how that works.” Paradis said that though gas prices rise, contrary to popular belief, a gas station’s profit margin remains the same.StastsCan says every province in Canada except Nova Scotia burned more gasoline last year than in 2006, despite the combined threat of rising fuel prices and growing fear of global warming due to carbon emissions.“People really are not driving less,” said Kim Evans, project leader for Statistics Canada, referring to the recently released study.“We’re not seeing that trend.“I’d say the last couple of years, there really hasn't been a real marked or significant decrease in the consumption of gasoline that we’ve seen.” Gasoline prices could rise as high as $1.50 per litre this month, says Peter Linder, Calgary energy analyst and DeltaOne Energy Fund president.“I expect a significant increase in gas prices from current levels. The regular price will approach $1.50 a litre,” said Linder.“That’s going to put a big damper on habits, and some plans. But it won’t be a disaster for a number of reasons.” Michael Irvin, gasoline analyst and president of MJ Ervin & Associates Inc., said Canadian drivers have resisted numerous price-related incentives to cut back on gasoline. He said a key level at which people may start cutting back is when gasoline costs rise to around $100 per fill-up of an average passenger car.“I’ve always said around $1.60 (per litre) but it’s probably more like $1.70 or $1.80 now, given that prices have gone up and people have become accustomed to it.” His prediction for the peak summer gasoline price is about $1.40 a litre, based on a recent softening of the crude price. Many tourism officials across the country hope the rising fuel prices will mean more Canadians will stay close to home this summer, spending their hard-earned dollars in their own province.Higher fuel costs will also continue to have an impact on the cost of flying, pushing air fares up for some destinations.Richard Bartrem, vice-president of culture and communications for Westjet, admits record oil prices have been tough on the airline industry.“Every dollar the barrel moves represents a $5-million loss for us.” - with files from Canwest News Leave Cont’d from Page 1 follow Quebec’s lead, which amended its laws to allow these individuals to be away from work without losing their jobs." If passed, Bonsanf s bill would ensure parents are entitled to up to 52 weeks of employment insurance while they are away from work following the death or disappearance of a child.Bonsant, who held a press conference before tabling her bill in the house, was accompanied by $herbrool-^ mm Arlo & Janis rA\ffllk)KIW&OrPUKCHA0IU& THLTYF& people U6£ 00& OF TM06& EAEPI &CG5 WH6UlT6KM6A6IF1î«Y'œ FOR MY MU PHOlOE, 1>UKIUGcT0 THEM6ELVÊÔ/ f C' ( /^ \ f-V' I l ' ) 0» l v.^ y O ï Vj\ — vv— !/ \ \V- -t \ \w The Born Loser ' YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT OOOLA!
