I.I ¦¦¦— August 6-August 12, 1999 page 5 Cover Story RECORD Photographer records natural history of Canadian Arctic CYNTHIA CHALK ^*Srsiw^“ fPEj ***** l?«5iig|'a.By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Philipsburg Cynthia Chalk has experienced Canada’s northern wilderness in a way few Canadians have.Chalk, 85, recently returned from her 14th expedition to the Canadian arctic that she has grown to love.Over the last four decades, she has produced a photographic chronicle of the natural history of the Far North, documenting its plant and animal life during its brief summers.By her own assessment, she was an unlikely candidate for such an undertaking.“1 was just a housewife,” said Chalk with her characteristic modesty. Her adventure in photography began as a Girl Guide Commissioner in West-mount over 60 years ago.“There were very few visual aids available for teaching so I decided to take my own slides to use in the training courses,” she said.In the 1950s, she joined the Montreal Camera Club to improve her technical command of photography.“The club met once a month.A judging panel reviewed three to four slides per person,” she explained, noting that the judges were often tough critics.“You just take the criticism and try to put it into practice,” she added.Almost 50 years later, she is an honorary lifetime member of that club and credits it with giving her discipline and the confidence to start submitting slides to international exhibitions.Chalk first took her photography skills north in 1981 when a friend at the Natural History Museum in Ottawa informed her the government might be considering curtailing tourism in certain parts of the fragile arctic.Encouraged to get in before the door closed, she took her first trip north.Since then, she has been a frequent visitor to Bathurst Inlet.Getting there is in itself an adventure, involving a flight to Yellowknife followed by a Twin Otter charter to the remote lodge run by the Warner family. The lodge, located at a former Hudson’s Bay Company post, is open only three to five weeks of the year depending on accessibility. In the offseason, its owners retreat to the relative comfort of Yellowknife, leaving the settlement in the care of the inlet’s only permanent residents, several Inuit families.Bathurst Inlet is located in the low arctic (tundra under 2000 feet in elevation). In spite of the abundance of seawater, the land is technically arctic desert, receiving less that 10 inches of precipitation per year.Underlying the shallow soils is permafrost. In this bleak environment, only the heartiest and most adaptable species survive.Yet, for 90 days each year, the land is bathed in 24 hours of sunlight and for a short time, the arctic desert blooms.“Bathurst Inlet is called an oasis,” said Chalk, who has acquired an impressive knowledge of the area’s natural history.“The vegetation is more lush there than in other parts of the tundra.Everything you find in the high arctic will Ice flow in the Canadian arctic grow there, plus others. There are birds of all kinds, including peregrine falcons, golden eagles and rough-legged buteos.” According to Chalk, arctic flora must be particularly tough to survive in this environment.Annuals rarely survive because one or two bad seasons can mean no seeds to generate the following year’s population. The perennials that survive are often legumes, a group equipped with nitrogen-fixing nodules on their roots, a major advantage in the nitrogen-poor soils of the north.Arctic plants have developed shallow but widespread roots, an adaptation enabling them to slide on the surface of frequent landslides.Arctic flower blossoms often have the ability to freeze solid and thaw without dying. Some, plants, such as poppies, act like solar collectors, tracking the summer sun throughout the day.Others, such as the moss campion, can maintain a temperature as much as ten degrees warmer than ambient air temperatures. One characteristic that all arctic plants share is slow growth: arctic willows, which remain permanently stunted by the harsh conditions, have growth rings so minute that they are difficult to see with the unaided eye.Chalk said mammalian wildlife is also surprisingly abundant but must be treated with respect.“If you’re part of a group and want to split off on your own, you must notify the group leader.” An Inuit guide is usu- ally assigned to those who break from the main body, no matter how tranquil the landscape might seem.Chalk observed how the native guides maintained a discrete distance, sometimes invisible to their charges, watching for animals that might pose a threat to small groups of hikers.“Grizzlies are the biggest threat: they are fast and even if you could outrun them, there are no trees to climb.Musk ox can also be dangerous: you are told that if a bull rubs his nose on his front legs, he’s getting ready to charge.” Chalk believes that few people really comprehend how fragile this wilderness really is.Not only is growth slow, but damage to the physical environment may scar the landscape for decades. She observed this firsthand during the 1980s when she visited Sachs Harbor on Banks Island.Tracks left by vehicles from a weather station abandoned after the war could still be seen almost four decades later. When not traveling, the photographer enjoys giving public slide shows on the natural history of the low arctic. She has talked to students in Magog, Sawyerville, Cookshire and Bury. Her photos have been extensively published and she is the author of several articles, including “Arctic Impressions” published in Camera Canada. At 85 years of age, her trips to the tundra have become part of the rhythm of life and her northern hosts, extended family.“I’ll go back as long as I can get on and off a plane.” CYNTHIA CHALK ¦ S "*Y , m y,% % ?wf,.- • .#£ 'jg iat Chalk snapped this photo ofinukshuk, stone monuments built by the Inuit to provide a reference point as it has kids for years.” The drawing was from an animated musical called The Iron Man.It was to be an adaption of a Pete Townshend concept album inspired by a children’s story by Ted Hughes.Hughes, a British Poet Laureate, wrote the tale of the unlikely friendship to comfort his children after the death of their mother Slyvia Plath.Townshend mounted the album as a play in the style of Tommy. The screen version backed by Toronto theatre producer Des McAnuff, however, was stalled in development.“So I got the Ted Hughes book, and I liked it very much, but I had some of my own ideas,” says the director of The Iron Giant.“I asked them the question, “What if a gun had a soul and didn’t want to be a gun?”’ The screenwriter of batteries not included began his own version of the film which would become The Iron Giant, opening Friday.Set in the 1950s - when the American way of life was under threat from Communism, atomic war and rock ‘n’ roll -nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes makes an incredible discovery in the woods.Hogarth finds himself hiding his friend from the dangers of Earth, especially human paranoia as personified by government agent Kent Mansley. The Iron Giant proves to be the most refreshing and wholly unique cartoon to hit theatres in recent memory.and not once do any of the characters break out into song.“Certainly everything that was different about The Iron Giant, I had to fight for at one point or another,” Bird says.“They felt uncomfortable originally about it being in the ‘50s, about it not being a musical, that we don’t have a ton of characters or obvious comic relief and all the ways we deviated from the traditional formula.” Bird points out Warner Bros., the studio responsible for distinct TV animation like Batman and Animaniacs, didn’t oppose breaking new ground.“To their credit, if I gave them a good argument as to why we should deviate, they supported doing it.” “I think there’s been a tendency to chase Disney’s tail,” Bird says.“To me, a much greater goal and sign of success would be to get Disney to chase your tail.I think if you’re going to attempt that you better take some risks.” Not that Bird doesn’t owe a great debt to those classic Disney films. The Montana-born artist sent his first completed cartoon short off to the studio at age 14 and wound up studying informally with some of their legendary animators.“At a very early age I had a chance to work with some of the ' Nine Old Men.’ In fact, I even tip my hat to a couple of the Nine Old Men in this movie,” Bird says. Two witnesses early in the film attempt to describe to officials the enormous metal man who caused a train accident. They are none other than Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston - two Disney pioneers immortalized in the documentary Frank & Ollie.“All my first teachers in animation were the old Disney guys. All of my initial training was in this very elaborate animation.I think people mostly know me from my TV work and, to some extent, the original Family Dog I did for Amazing Stories. It seems a story of a little boy and his giant robot is timeless.pi* •; .;¦ feast N.i tn r .JellyBean w.m-im CKSH 10:00 AM Kiosks open Gaelic workshop Margaret Bennett Olde 78th Fraser Highlanders NOON Historical discussion Bernard Epps Highland dance workshop Heather McNaab 1:00 PM Causerie historique Jean-Pierre Kesteman Martyn Bennett workshop Bagpipe workshop Jeff McCarthy 2:00 PM Scottish beer tasting Patricia Fraser Alan Jones workshop/show for bagpipes Scottish Country dance Adriana Linden 3:00 PM Scotch tasting Helen Finn Gaelic workshop Margaret Bennett Greenberg-MacPhee workshop Olde 78th Fraser Highlanders 4:00 PM Tea & scones + workshop Daniel Audet Surprise event 5:00 PM Scottish beer tasting Patricia Fraser Alan Jones workshop/show for bagpipes Tales & Legends Janice LaDuque 6:00 PM Scotch tasting Helen Finn Contes & Légendes Gaétane Breton 7:00 PM Margaret Bennett 8:00 PM David Greenberg & Doug MacPhec 9:00 PM Martyn Bennett 10:00 PM Ceilidh 11:00 PM The night of the Druids 10:00 AM Kiosks open Gaelic prayers & sacred songs with Na Nigheanan Glengarry Group Olde 78,h Fraser Highlanders 11:00 AM Gaelic workshop Sheena McKenna 1:00 PM Historical discussion Bernard Epps Highland dance Heather McNaab & bagpipe workshop Jeff McCarthy Martyn Bennett workshop 2:00 PM Scottish beer tasting Patricia Fraser Causerie historique Jean-Pierre Kesteman Na Nigheanan Glengarry Group Olde 78th Fraser Highlanders 3:00 PM Margaret Bennett Scotch tasting Helen Finn Alan Jones workshop & show for bagpipes 4:00 PM Tea & scones + workshop Daniel Audet Scottish Country dance Adriana Linden Tales & Legends Janice LaDuque 5:00 PM Scottish beer tasting Patricia Fraser Contes & Légendes Gaétane Breton 6:00 PM Scotch tasting Helen Finn Alan Jones workshop/show for bagpipes 7:00 PM Margaret Bennett Marfyn Bennett 9:00 PM Closing ceremonies (819) 877-5688 for tickets and information Québec:: NouviAuxaccents McAuslan^j LA PASSION DES GRANDES «itdES LaTribune Intersection of routes 108 and 257 5:00 PM Kiosks open Art exhibit 7:00 PM Margaret Bennett 8:00 PM David Greenberg & Doug MacPhee 9:00 PM Martyn Bennett 10:00 PM Ceilidh 1 ami August 6-August 12, 1999 page 9 TVWEEK ridciy Camelot Revisited Thomas Ian Nicholas plays a young hero in A Kid in King Arthur’s Court, airing Sunday, Aug.8, on ABC.Loosely based on Mark Twain’s book A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, the film follows the travails of a boy who is brought back in time by master sorcerer Merlin (Ron Moody) to help save Camelot from the evil Lord Belasco (Art Malik).A pre-Titanic Kate Winslet stars as Princess Sarah, with Joss Ackland as King Arthur.6:00 PM CD GD B O ID (9 News a Le TVA (23 M*A*S*H Ü Judge Judy ED Simpsons (33] Newshour With Jim Lehrer S BBC World News rri< Simon & Simon QJJJjJ Cafe Campus Blues (R) Worldview mhh Discover Magazine (R) lA’.'i International Newsfirst lint Dealing With Dogs Basa Madison I7T»1 Home Again (R) tV-L'l Little House on the Prairie fm Uh Oh! nII Alice IH.'I Off the Record.6:30 PM 3] NBC Nightly News a Scènes de rue B (22) ABC World News Tonight IQ News @1 Judge Judy (R) ED Simpsons a Nightly Business Report Moneyline Newshour i.Y.’l News TV: China and Russia Mm Pet Project HiM'.'l Twisted (R) fHB Home Again (R) fm Animorphs H.'l.'l Alice if-l.'t Sportsdesk.7:00 PM CD CBS Evening News CD Jeopardy!
