the south slope of Ham Mountain.Saint-Joseph-de-Ham-Sud is a hamlet of 250 inhabitants, a few kilometers off Route 257 and about 20 minutes from Asbestos. It’s where Normand Vigneault moved some 20 years ago armed with a degree in fine arts from the Université de Quebec à Montréal.“I wanted nothing more to do with city life.I came here to paint,” says the father of five.“But living in the country, you learn to do a bit of everything.” It was learning to do a bit of everything, and a love of food, that eventually led Vigneault, in 2003, to start building a small, three-storey, wood-frame structure where he brews beer (using gravity) and, on summer week- ends, offers clients the possibility of drinking his brew on a small tree-top terrace with a stunning view of Mount Ham.The nano-brewery (weekly production is around 800 liters) wasn’t Vi-gneault’s first idea when he started thinking entrepreneurship.“I almost Please see Beer on Page 4 page 2 Monday, January 21, 2008 =RECORD= Ex premier accused of comparing Trudeau to Hitler Heated debate By Marianne White Canwest News Service In a heated and emotional debate Saturday about the patriation of the Constitution in 1982, the former chief of staff of Jean Chretien, Eddie Goldenberg, accused former Quebec premier Bernard Landry of comparing Pierre Elliott Trudeau to Adolf Hitler. In his speech delivered to law students in Quebec City, Landry quoted the late Liberal prime minister and driving force behind the patriation of the Constitution as saying at the time: “This Constitution will last 1,000 years.” Landry, a founder of the Parti Québécois, added: “He drew inspiration, I am afraid, from one of the most horrible people of Western history and I don’t need to say his name.” When it was Goldenberg’s turn to talk, he bluntly accused Landry of drawing a parallel between Trudeau and Hitler. The notorious Nazi ruler had promised to lead the German people into a Reich, or empire, that would last 1,000 years.“When he used a quote from Trudeau to compare him with Adolf Hitler, 1 found that absolutely disgusting and I wish he would apologize to the Trudeau family,” said Goldenberg, author of an insider account of federal politics titled The Way it Works.Goldenberg was a special constitutional adviser to the minister of justice, Jean Chrétien, at the time of the patriation of the Constitution. When Chrétien became prime minister in 1993, Goldenberg served as his senior policy adviser and chief of staff.“That’s not the Canadian democracy I know and that’s not the democracy of the province of Quebec that I grew up in,” Goldenberg added, earning a big round of applause. After Goldenberg’s presentation, a fuming Landry accused Goldenberg of twisting his words.“When Trudeau said that the Constitution was going to last 1,000 years, it was an ill-advised expression and the media at the time, in French as well as in English, reported exactly that.Blaming him for a poor expression is not comparing him to one of the most despicable people in history,” Landry explained, also receiving applause.Landry, the PQ premier from 2001 to 2003, later acknowledged that perhaps he should have chosen his words more carefully but said he just picked up on what was said at the time of the patriation of the Constitution.“The media reported that this sentence had already been used (by Hitler) and that it was a bad choice. That’s it,” he said.Nonetheless, the reference left Chré-tien’s one-time right-hand man outraged.“Why did he used that reference if he didn’t want to make a comparison with Hitler? It was absolutely out of line,” said Goldenberg. In a panel discussion, Landry blasted Trudeau’s Constitution, which was never signed by any Quebec government, calling it a straitjacket.Goldenberg retorted that Trudeau haunts the sovereigntists because the Liberals beat them in the 1980 referendum on Quebec sovereignty and in subsequent federal elections in the province.WINNERS 7.012 I’ 19 18 22 47 mfTrfrjii 12 13 27 23 I 22 3Z49 bonus(B) 31 42 46 bonus(B) 3/6 130,113 2/6+b 87,952 Total sales Next grand prize (approx ) PRIZES $4,538,847.00 $162,101.60 factory to be so.After the expansion of 1891, over 700 workers were employed at the Paton. They handled some 100 millions pounds of wool in a year. When the Lomas Mill closed its doors, the Paton took over its installations.Dominion Textile bought the Paton in 1923.During the depression years, the Paton reduced its workforce to 125.However, the demands of World War II required the mill to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week with 750 workers: 95 per cent of the production was destined for the army.Over the course of its existence, the woven fabrics manufactured at the Paton were principally from two kinds of wool: carded and worsted. The worsted wool produces a finer yarn than the carded one.The company’s products included tweed, jersey, carpeting, cashmere, velvet, serge and flannel. The 1950s brought about another decline for the Paton.Competition from international markets and the need to modernize its installations put the company’s future in jeopardy. In 1965, the Paton was taken over by a group from Huntingdon who renamed the company the Cleyn and Tinker Paton Inc.Despite attempts to revive the factory, the company left the original site in 1978, concentrating its operations on Woodward Street before closing down for good in 1983.This is one in a series provided by the Sherbrooke Historical Society. The information in this profile is taken from recent document PICTURE Rainbows are often depicted with a pot of gold at the end.If you have ever tried to follow a rainbow in the sky, however, you know that it is impossible to find the end. That’s because rainbows are simply reflections of the sun’s rays in raindrops. The ends of a rainbow may look like they are on earth, but they’re really not. This may be one of the reasons leprechauns are known to hide their gold at the end of a rainbow.According to an Irish legend, any leprechaun caught by a human must tell where they have hidden their pot of gold.As long as they have put their gold at the end of a rainbow, which humans cannot find, their gold will be safe!
