or named after a mixed-breed horse, which went by the same name — it goes on and on.Regardless, the concept of mixing drinks was helped along by bad-quality liquor during the Prohibition era.But right about now, at this time of year, it means something quite simple — a yummy drink that loves a party.Like the culinary scene, cocktail culUire has been freed of slavish devotion to recipes, and a generation of creative, exciting “mixmasters” are tending bar. They've stepped out of the shadows and have become minor celebs, invigorating the ambit of lounges.Take Jay Jones, for example.Jones is a cocktail trail-blazer in Vancouver and champs at the bit to push the envelope.“I’ve always strived to be insightful, stylish and fun with my contemporary recipes, underlined by a fierce commitment to the faithful presentation of ‘classic cocktails’.As I have always preached, if you don’t understand and respect where cocktails came from, you have no business designing their friture.” The direction of drinks, he says, isn’t in following trends.“Trends are good because they gain momentum and create a high profile but now, the interest is more broad. It’s about what’s personally good for customers.Smart bartenders are able to create individual experi-.ences for people.People are always drawn to anything inspired or ambitious and exciting.” Dan Hawkins, who oversees the wine program and bar operations at Vancouver’s Aurora Bistro, has noted the soaring interest in cocktails.“For years, it was right into the wine or just a vodka and soda before dinner.People are trusting it a little more now.Trust had been lost because there was no passion put into cocktails, or they might have gone somewhere and had a mojito that was way too sweet. It tarnishes the idea.” Speaking of passion, Jones excitedly describes his recent creation inspired by the caipirinha, the national drink of Brazil.(Ironically and etymologically, caipirinha comes from the word caipira, which means someone from the countryside, someone backward.) “I call it Kentucky Caipirinha.Instead of Cachaca (made from sugarcane), I use Kentucky whisky.Bourbon is usually used in shots but it has layers — spice, chocolate, caramel. It’s fascinating.1 take cane sugar, crush limes with it for acidic balance and add bourbon.I take a 64 per cent chocolate, take a microplane and liberally shave this chocolate over the top and it creates an accent. It melts a bit and when you taste the drink, you first get the aroma of delicate chocolate.” BC Mulled Wine Aurora Bistro’s Dan Hawkins suggests you start off a holiday evening with mulled wine.Serve it in a specialty coffee cup or thick tempered glassware.2 cinnamon sticks 5 cardamom pods 3lfiack peppercorns 4 whole cloves 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 9 2 bottles of your favourite red wine 2 cups Venturi Schulze Brandenburg No.3 Sweet Amber Wine 1 small orange, thinly sliced 1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise Cinnamon sticks for garnish Wrap the cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, peppercorns and cloves in cheesecloth and tie with twine.Bring the sugar and water to boil in a 5-quart heavy pot, stirring until sugar is dissolved.Add the wines, spice bag, orange slices and vanilla bean.Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, approximately five minutes.Remove spice bag, orange slices and vanilla bean.Ladle into specialty coffee glasses and garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick. This will serve 8-10 people.Egg Nog Vancouver’s Josh Pape, bar manager at Chambar, originally made this luscious drink for staff to get through the hectic holiday period. They’d drink it at the end of an exhausting evening.Word soon leaked out and customers were demanding it.(The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says that although salmonella is rarely found in raw eggs, high-risk groups like young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems should avoid raw eggs. Also, choose Grade A eggs, don’t use ones with cracked shells, and keep the eggs cold.) 4 fresh Grade A eggs, separated 5 cups of milk 1 5-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 inch of vanilla bean seeds, removed (or 1 teaspoon vanilla essence) 1 cup Spiced Rum (see recipe below) Using a mixer, beat the egg yolks in a large bowl for five to 10 minutes or until quite thick.Slowly add in the milk, condensed milk, sugar and vanilla in a separate bowl.Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks.Slowly fold the egg whites into the rest of the mixture.Add Spiced Rum.Stir gently.Serve in cups and if you want the full nine yards, garnish with whipped cream, flavoured with maple syrup and top with a sprinkle of ground nutmeg.Makes enough for 6 people.Spiced Rum 1 750 millilitre bottle Barbancourt or Bacardi dark Drink rum 1 cinnamon stick 2 star anise 2 cloves 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 2 tablespoons maple syrup Mix all ingredients together and let stand for a minimum of 24 hours.(This will make about three cups.) As for the raffle tickets, the $100 cost can be paid in two installments before Jan.25.Tickets will be drawn for the $2,000 first prize, mini-sound system, television and DVD players during a Kristin Goff Can West News Service Consumers should have more clout to deal with certain telephone and Internet issues next year because of a pair of initiatives from the federal telecommunications regulator.A long-discussed plan to allow consumers to cut down on annoying calls from telemarketers by registering on a national “do-not-call-list” should be in operation by Sept.20, 2008, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) says.Separately, the CRTC recently announced conditional approval for a new consumer office to handle complaints relating to cellphones, Internet services and other telecommunications services not directly regulated by the CRTC.All service providers and resellers whose Canadian revenues exceed $10 million annually, which includes Telus, Bell Canada, Rogers and other other telephone, wireless and Internet provides, will have to join the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services Inc.(CCTS) by Feb.1, the CRTC said in a statement. The CCTS will provide residential customers and small businesses an avenue for resolving disputes related to unregulated telecommunication services in cases where no agreement can be reached with the service provider, the CRTC said.“It’s a great day for telecom consumers," said John Lawford, counsel for the Public Interest Advocacy Centre.“Finally, consumers can get real redress for phone, Internet and cellphone company mistakes that cost consumers millions of dollars a year.” While consumers must first attempt to resolve disputes directly with their service provider, the CCTS agency will be empowered to impose solutions, including up to $5,000 per complaint in cases where the dispute goes to binding resolution. The telecommunications industry started the complaints agency last July on a provisional basis. The CRTC last week gave approval to make it a permanent industry-funded agency, conditional on certain criteria, including having all large-service providers join the dispute resolution system. The Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunication Services has a toll free number: 1-888-221-1687 and website: www.ccts-cprst.ca for further information. The timetable for the do-not-call registry was included in an announcement last week that Bell Canada was awarded a five-year contract to operate the registry on behalf of the govern ment.Consumers will not be charged to have their names added to a list that prohibits unsolicited telephone calls from many telemarketers. But they also won’t be able to get total relief from unsolicited phone calls, once the registry is in operation.Telemarketing for registered charities, political parties, opinion polling, general-circulation newspapers, and organizations that had “an existing business relationship with a consumer” will still be allowed to make calls to people whose names are registered on the national do-not-call list.Bell Canada was the only bidder “compliant with the requirements” for the request for proposal on the five-year registry administration, CRTC said in a statement. Those requirements included a condition that the registry operator pay startup costs of the do-not-call registry.Telemarketers will be charged fees to support it.English movies this week Here’s a quick look at the English-language flicks playing in the Townships this week. Please Toronto.Flight and hotel reservations were made as soon as the performance was announced.Alas, the peerless jazz pianist had to cancel the show due to declining health.I travelled to Toronto, regardless, to enjoy a great city.Herbie Hancock was scheduled as a substitute for Oscar.Although Hancock is also an iconic jazz figure, I could not bring myself to attend the show.If I couldn’t see Oscar, I didn’t want to see anybody. As soon as Oscar was unable to perform near his home in Mississauga, I began to brace myself for an inevitable notification. It arrived Monday afternoon, when my wife wiped away tears and told me, “I have some very sad news.” My ample stomach sank.My eyes became watery.I went on the Internet and read the torrent of tributes to Peterson, who had died of kidney failure at age 82.1 left for the office, but not before finding my favourite Oscar recordings — the 1961 live sessions from the London House in Chicago. It seemed like the 15-minute drive took 15 seconds.I idolized Oscar Peterson. So did my late father.Alan Vanstone, a local jazz pianist, owned over 100 of Oscar’s recordings.I have expanded the collection to some 300 CDs, albums and tapes. In 1997,1 was introduced to Oscar following a performance at the Montreal Bistro jazz club in Toronto.I will never forget walking into his dressing room — I was reduced to a spluttering puddle.I warbled something about how my father had always wanted to meet hint, expressed my own admiration, and asked him to autograph an album I had inherited from dad.Because the album has a dark cover, I had purchased a silver pen just in case I had the opportunity to get an autograph.I handed the pen to Oscar, who soon discovered that it was dry.NO! I almost fainted. There I was, with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Oscar Peterson, and the pen was a lemon.I apoldgized while perspiring.Instead of being irked, he looked at me, smiled, and said warmly, “No problem.” A friend helped him sit down, at which point he dabbed the pen a few times on a napkin until the ink started flowi ng.Then he autographed the album: ‘To Rob, Best Wishes, $incerely, Oscar Peterson.” I had the honour of meeting him again after a 2004 show at Vancouver’s Or- pheum Theatre.I was among the admirers who waited for him outside the stage door. After emerging, he was remarkably (and typically) obliging for the few dozen fans who sought a signature or a few priceless moments with this wonderful man. While sitting in his wheelchair, he signed my ticket stub and cordially accepted my thanks.Oscar’s courtesy was so overwhelming that I soon wrote about it in my regular Regina Leader-Post jazz column.I sent Peterson the column. And, yes, I mentioned my dad again.A week later, I saw a familiar name — Oscar Peterson — pop up in my inbox. The subject line read “Your letter.” I stopped taking notes, hyperventilated, and clicked on his good name.“Dear Rob.Thank you for your most emotional and moving letter and article.I can only tell you that it gives me great joy to realize that, due to the fact that I do my best to accommodate the fans that so loyally await the chance of an autograph from me after a concert.I can recall the days in Montreal that I myself was in that position after hearing some of my musical idols perform. Each and every performance is a very personal and challenging event, not only to myself but also to my group, and hopefully will remain that way as long as I continue performing.Thank you once again for your thoughtful letter and article.Regards, Oscar Peterson.” Thank you, Oscar, for so many treasured memories — and for recordings that will forever keep you alive. ¦ THF., RECORD Musicians helping musicians On Air Are good intentions enough?By Maurice Singfleld Special to The Record ¦ ¦ uhe Eastern Townships has its resident musicians, most of them veterans playing small bars and restaurants that dot the countryside, They play jazz, country, rock, blues and bluegrass, no longer dreaming of be coming a star. Some of them are writers, but most are musicians happy to recreate the sound they grew up on, releasing a passion that’s still a driving force in their lives.Sometimes there’ll be a new addition to the scene, such as Steve Lorenzi from Montreal, who moved out to the Townships about two years ago. When he was 18 Lorenzi played drums and later gave it up for married life and a family.Little did he know that 25 years later, in 2006, he would resurrect his love for music.“After moving out here I stumbled across a few local musicians playing at Stressy’s restaurant in South Bolton, and started going to jamborees,” says Lorenzi, “where I got to meet more musicians and eventually started playing in a band.” What would the country music scene in the Townships be like without jamborees, events that usually take place in a club hosted by a house band?At these shindigs, usually starting at 2 p.m.and finishing around 2 a.m., patrons of the bar along with the participants and their friends are presented with a variety of musicians and groups from all over the region. It’s basically about having a good time and also a very good way for new artists to showcase their talents.“At Stressy’s I got to meet and play with musicians such as Bruce Benoit, Bobby Dee, Brian Allen and Jim Bailey,” says Lorenzi, “and we all became good friends.” “At the time I’d also go down the road and visit Silverado who were playing the Owl’s Nest bar in Mansonville.I guess you could say I became a regular guest musician.” Silverado is a well known country band in the Townships and has been performing for 20 years.Their current members are Ross Roach (steel guitar), Norm Sayer (bass and vocals), Alan Cutler (guitar) and Serge Martel (drums).Apparently, there is more steady work in the Townships for country musicians than there is for rock bands.According to Sayer, “before I started playing in Silverado I used to play in an alternative rock band and couldn’t keep a job.Now that I’m in a country band I play every weekend.“Still, there are country bands out there that can’t find work,” admits Sayer.“It’s like a business.” Roach agrees, saying that “bands have to realize there is a certain amount of effort required in promoting oneself. You have to go out and meet people to get the bookings and the longer bands are around the more opportunities there are for them to play. It’s about exposure, getting yourself Reash see CIDI on Page 6 .r;„ ; Roach says that Silverado has just celebrated its first year at the Yamaska Hotel in Cowansville, and picks up afternoon parties and fundraisers for organizations such as the cancer association (the Horizon club in Sutton this coming Valentine’s Day), and the Children’s Wish Foundation (every spring and fall in Knowlton) to fill out their agenda. It’s part of being a musician, donating one’s time to good causes. With having a “real job” high on the local musician’s priority list, Roach looks forward to playing on the weekends: “Music is my passion, and after a week’s work it’s like a cleansing. It cleans my mind.” How do musicians go about finding work when there are fewer and fewer places to play?Smokin’ Country, made up of Lorenzi, Gordie Smith (guitar and vocals) and Danny Day (bass and vocals), is one of the few bands that are worldng regularly.like Silverado which is stationed at the Yamaska Hotel every Saturday night, they play at the Cowansville Legion on Sunday afternoons.Smith, a 42-year veteran of the Townships music scene, lives in Beebe and was a member of Big Foot, a very popular local country band in the '80s.“I don’t mind making the weeldy trip,” says Smith.“If I didn’t have music, I wouldn’t have anything.Besides, all the clubs are closed around the Stanstead and Ayer’s Cliff areas.” He believes that the current drink-ing-and-driving laws are forcing clubs to close, and that one day “all of the bars will be closed and that’ll be the end of the music scene as we know it.” Of course, there is a big difference between the rural scene and urban centres. While most bars in general have experienced hard times, city bars are less likely to close because they service larger populations within walking distance or who have access to public transit. In the Townships rural areas, bars mainly rely upon people having to travel a fair distance by car in order to enjoy a night out.(And what’s the weather like out there?) Part of getting the word out for Lorenzi and his band is to attend jamborees.“When we play jamborees we don’t only promote ourselves to club owners and the general public,” he says, “we also promote ourselves to other musicians. In a way, it’s probably our best exposure, because musicians recommend musicians to club owners looking for new acts.” It all comes down to musicians respecting and helping each other.Like when Bruce Benoit took ill in the fall of 2006 with heart problems and was told later in January, 2007 that there was nothing much the doctors could do for him. They told him that a heart attack was imminent and could happen at any time. When his local musician Mends found out, they were shocked.“Bruce had played with all of us at some time or rather,” recounts Lorenzi, “and my natural instinct was to see what I could do to help, if anything.” With little experience at such things Lorenzi asked Benoit, over a cup of coffee, if he had a last wish, and much to his surprise Benoit replied that he would like to record a CD.Lorenzi took the initiative as producer and came up with a pool of musicians within his immediate circle and Benoit grabbed some to create Go For It, the session band for the project. The musicians chosen to accompany Benoit on rhythm guitar and vocals were Lorenzi, Roach, Smith and Sayer.Born and raised in South Stukely, Benoit started playing music at the age of 15.By the time he turned 19 he left for Ontario and later returned to Quebec, living in Montreal between 1987 and 1993.After that he lived in the States until his recent return to the Townships in 2006.Always singing and playing, Benoit developed a rich country voice that’s evident on the upcoming Go For It CD, to be released in the new year.“I appreciate very much the effort that Steve and the rest of the guys have put into this project," says Benoit.“It’s not every day that one gets to record in a professional studio with friends.I’m looking forward to the CD’s release.” Benoit realizes how hard it is to get work here in the Townships, but still manages as a musician.Since his arrival in the Townships he and his band Straight Country have played the likes of Brome Fair, the Dunham Hotel, Legion halls, barbeques, private parties and will be playing the Sutton Legion on Dec.31, for New Years Eve.Along with Benoit, Straight Country is made up of Arnold Davis (lead guitar and vocals), Jim Bailey (bass and vocals), Shirley Spencer (rhythm guitar and vocals) and Jacques Deblois (dmms). It’s a shame that the once vibrant country music scene in the Townships is still tied to the alcohol trade. Why can’t there be other venues for these musicians to play in on a regular basis? If Smith is correct in predicting the day the music dies is when the bars die, then it’s probably a good thing, given the risks of drinking and driving. On the other hand, what will replace the scene?“I think the home entertainment centre is the new scene,” says Lorenzi.“It’s obvious people stay home a lot more than they used to.” Producing more projects like Go For It might enable Townships artists to grow with the ever evolving home entertainment craze, but the focus of development for any individual or organization willing to help musicians in the Townships has to be in the performance arts direction.Without places to play, the music will die. What good is a CD if artists don’t have venues to perform in?What good is anything in life if it’s not grounded in something real?Arranging CDs of Townships artists on a table at special events helps sell a few CDs for some artists, but it doesn’t beat having regular exposure. Our musicians need work. They have to get out there and create a buzz. There’s only so much energy and money available through volunteering and government funding, and we might have to look at things differently in the future when it comes to using these resources. We need to create a circuit for our Townships artists.Could we possibly use the superb auditoriums that most of our schools have today and present artists on a regular basis?I can remember playing, and being paid, every weekend in high school gymnasiums across the province when I was 17 years old.Schools are community centres.CIDI plans to help and is doing something, but that doesn’t mean we have to do it alone.Give us a listen online at Something had gone wrong with Christmas, I realized, or more likely with me.So I wrote the story about my sour friend, the Grinch, to see if I could rediscover something about Christmas that obviously I’d lost.” And Geisel offered hints that the Grinch was based at least in part on himself: Completed when Geisel was 53, the story includes the Grinch saying, “Why, for 53 years I’ve put up with it now! I MUST stop this Christmas from coming! .But HOW?” Similarly, just as the Grinch lived on a mountain overlooking Who-ville, Geisel lived atop Mount Soledad, California, overlooking the town of La Jolla below. In a 1976 interview, Geisel told the San Diego Union that the Grinch was “a nasty anti-Christmas character that was really myself,” and, for a while at least, he drove a car with GRINCH vanity plates. It took Seuss a month to write the story, and another two to illustrate it.Released the same year as his popular The Cat in the Hat, the Grinch was another nail in the coffin of the Dick books that children had, since the 1930s, relied upon to learn to read. The Grinch was an immediate bestseller, launching Seuss into the stratosphere of children’s book authors.Initial reviews for the Grinch were generally favourable, with The Saturday Review, which Cohen notes had not always been kind to Geisel, writing “The inimitable Dr.Seuss has brought off a fresh triumph. The verse is as lively and the pages are as bright and colourful as anyone could wish.Reading the book aloud will be a fascinating exercise for parents or for older brothers and sisters, who will pretend they are entertaining the children while secretly enjoying the humour and the moral for themselves.” The Grinch received a further boost in 1966 with the release of the now-famous 26-minute animated TV version of the book, directed by Chuck Jones and starring the voices of Boris Karloff as the narrator and Grinch, and — uncredited at the time — June Foray as Cindy Lou Who.Apart from expanding the Grinch’s reach from book to screen, the film brought a new look to the Grinch, who is depicted in the Seuss book in black-and-white and with pink eyes.In the animated version, on which Jones worked alongside Seuss, the Grinch was green. The cartoon also allowed Seuss the opportunity to add musical lyrics to the story, most notably those to ‘Trim Up the Tree’ and ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr.Grinch’.“That allowed him to be more elaborate in his descriptions of the Grinch’s dark soul and the pageantry of the Whos’ festivities,” says Cohen. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! first aired on Dec.18,1966, on CBS, one year after the debut of another seasonal TV classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas.Cohen’s interest in Dr.Seuss came, naturally, as a kid."I have memories of being home from school sick and reading I Had Trouble In Getting To Sofia Sollew,” he recalls, “so it was like Dr.Seuss was keeping me company.” He credits such books as On Beyond Zebra Please see Seuss on Page 8 BLACK CAT BOOKS Happy New Year to will be that there were many fine films, and that a lot of people kept complaining that there was nothing they wanted to see.In other words, it was one of those years without a defining blockbuster.Several movies did well during a year of sequels and safe choices: the new Pirates film, the new Shrek, another Harry Potter, a Spider-Man sequel.None of them was a film to get excited about, however.Only the last of the Bourne trilogy could be considered anything other than a tired gesture toward milking a franchise (and pulling in another $100 million or so).The best films, on the other hand, were all small: the Coen Brothers’ return in a violent, hypnotic Western; a Second World War romance that turned out to be about the very act of storytelling: an art house picture about abortion in Romania. This was a good year for movies, but you had to pay attention, to go outside the usual Hollywood fare to the other Brad Pitt film, say, the one that wasn’t Ocean’s Thirteen, but was a difficult Western with a long title (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford). It turned out to be a noble failure as a film but a fascinating work of art. Here are the top 10 movies of 2007.1) Atonement: A wartime romance that is also a chilling story of war and a chilling story of romance.Joe Wright has adapted the wonderful Ian McEwan book with just the right touch of sincerity and tragedy, so that the ill-fated love between characters played by Keira Knightley and James McAvoy becomes part of the sense of doom that blossoms — first gradually and then suddenly, just like all the best art — into a tale of storytelling itself.2) No Country For Old Men: A return for the Coen Brothers to the territory they know best, the land of deadpan violence and the rumble of apocalypse beneath your feet.Josh Brolin is great as a Vietnam vet who discovers millions in drug money, Javier Bardem is greater as the mythic killer on his trail, and Tommy Lee Jones presides over it all in a defining role as a sheriff who has seen the world changing in ways he can’t understand.3) 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days: The “Romanian abortion movie” is both harrowing and brilliant. It’s set during the Ceausescu years, when abortion was illegal, and it shows what happens when a young woman gets pregnant: Juno in a totalitarian state. There’s a political subtext, but director Cristian Mungiu lets us discover it ourselves: this is filmmaking stripped down to its essentials.A scene at a dinner party, with a stationery camera watching the guests — only one of whom knows what we know — is a master class in understated suspense.4) The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: An indelible tale of courage, based on the true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, a French magazine editor who had a catastrophic stroke at the age of 43 and could move only his left eye.He wrote his autobiography by blinking.Beautifully told by artist-director Julian Schnabel and featuring a remarkable performance by Mathieu Amalric.5) Fm Not There: Bob Dylan through a kaleidoscope.Todd Haynes’ unconventional biopic postulates seven personalities for Dylan, played by different actors. The result is a collage of impressions that will frustrate some but stands as the ideal metaphor for his elusive subject.Cate Blanchett, as the Blonde On Blonde Dylan, gives the most interesting characterization of a celebrity in memory.6) Charlie Wilson’s War: A comic romp through a deadly subject, based on the true story of a womanizing congressman — played with gusto by Tom Hanks — who helped arm Afghanistan for its war against the Russians.Director Mike Nichols plays down the obvious parallels to the war on terror and lets us enjoy the good old can-do spirit of misguided religion and democracy, enlivened by a great performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman as a gruff CIA operative.7) The Bourne Ultimatum: The last and best film in the trilogy about a spy with amnesia seeking the answer to the Big Questions: who he is, where he comes from, where he is going.Matt Damon brings an all-American fierceness to the role, and director Paul Greengrass speeds us through its intricacies with dispatch and cleverness.8) Gone Baby Gone: Ben Affleck is back — as a director, no less — in this grim mystery set in a beautifully observed culture: the tough, druggy neighbourhoods of blue-collar Boston. The story has some narrative bumps, but the atmosphere is authentic and the bittersweet ending will keep you talking for hours.9) Ratatouille: One of the best movies ever made about our love affair with food, and it comes in an animated movie about a rat who’s a great instinctive cook.Beyond the technical mastery of the animation lies a fascinating glimpse into the workings of a French restaurant kitchen and a brilliant portrait of an intimidating food critic who is transported by a taste of the food of his childhood.10) Juno: The movie you want to take in your arms for a big hug.Canadian actress Ellen Page is wonderful as Juno, a 16-year-old girl who gets pregnant and decides to have the baby and give it up for adoption. The script, by ex-stripper Diablo Cody, is smart and funny, turning a scandal into a warm story about family and an invented character into that rarest of movie types, a person you would like to meet.Honourable mentions • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford • Away From Her • Eastern Promises • Into The Wild • Jindabyne • Knocked Up • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street • Zodiac • 2 Days In Paris • 3:10 to Yuma.Seuss: Cont’d from Page 7 and And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street for helping develop his curiosity about even the mundane, and The Sneetches and Horton Hears A Who for informing his “intolerance for intolerance." In 1988, after seeing the touring exhibition Dr.Seuss From Then To Now, he became interested in the works Geisel created apart from the Dr.Seuss children’s books.Finding little information about Geisel’s other projects — and much incorrect information— Cohen set about to right the record, in the process becoming perhaps the foremost authority on Seuss.“At some point 1 began to get a feeling of responsibility,” he recalls.“Someone should tell people the truth about these things because the more that misinformation is repeated, the more it becomes entrenched as ‘fact.’ If there had been decent information available when I happened to start looking.I’d never have pursued things this far.” His pursuit also left him with a massive trove of Seuss memorabilia — literally thousands of items, including a Hankey Bird sculpture that Geisel developed to promote Hankey Bannister Scotch Whisky; illustrations and advertisements that he did for the Atlas Bulletin; an in-house publication for New Departure for which Geisel drew a cover depicting Hitler, Mussolini and a Japanese figure being kicked by an enormous boot; a set of coasters he designed in 1932, which Cohen describes as probably the first piece of three-dimensional “Seussiana”; copies of books he illustrated for other children’s authors before doing his own; a Nuzzlepuss ashtray; prototypes for poseable Cole-co Cat in the Hat dolls that were never produced; sketches he drew when bored at society functions; and more than 30 “lost" stories that were published in periodicals in the 1930s but which were never printed in book form.“The unobtainable idea is to find, collect, restore, and preserve the full Seuss legacy," says Cohen, who is also working on other 50th-anniversary Seuss editions, and who wrote the 1994 biography of Dr.Seuss, The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing But the Seuss, “and then create a museum in which to house the information so that it is saved for posterity.” Until then, we can seek solace and entertainment — perhaps even some of the community spirit that the Grinch eventually found — in such easy-to-find Seussiana as How the Grinch Stole Christmas! “Even though it is a book about Christmas,” says Mr.Cohen, “it is never about religion.Ted made sure never to mention any particular faith or method of worship. As a consequence, the book remains accessible to people beyond the obvious audience.“When you add in the feet that the messages continue to be relevant, it is no surprise that this has ended up being one of the most popular Dr.Seuss books of all time, with more hardcover copies of the Grinch’s story being sold than that of Winnie the Pooh.” He s dying to 1: 1$*MIr mvwis aPIXARi Ratatouille^ |THK< RECORD TALK December 28.2007 - January 3, 2008 page 9 Take two Another critic’s top picks By Katherine Monk CanWestNews Service ¦ ¦ «here was no shortage of ambi-I tion, and no shortage of big mes-¦ sages, but for all the good JL intentions, 2007 was a highly uneven and unpredictable year marked by awkward political efforts and big dramas that exceeded their grasp. On year-end lists, it’s the big movies with epic themes that generally get most of the attention, but this year the biggies didn’t quite match the intimacy and emotional range of the smaller, human-scaled efforts, and so it’s with some regrets that such startling efforts as Atonement and No Country for Old Men didn’t make my list.By the same token, I’m heartened and inspired by the 10 movies that proved money, fame, special effects and celebrity glitz will always come second to a good story delivered with compassion and artistic integrity.1) Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead: It’s one of the bleakest films of the year, but this latter-day effort from the as-yet un-Oscared Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men) happens to be the sharpest dissection of modern man since Kevin Spacey broke open suburbia in American Beauty.Boasting razor-edged performances from an ensemble cast that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Albert Finney, Ethan Hawke and Marisa Tomei, Lumet’s surgical hand shows us how easy and accessible evil can be when greed enters the picture. It ain’t pretty or uplifting, but it’s so close to the awful truth about the human condition, you’re forced to surrender to Lumet’s vision one way or another.2) 3:10 to Yuma: James Mangold is another director who perpetually gets glossed over at awards time, even though his moving Cop Land is easily Sly Stallone’s best performance to date.In his re make of an Elmore Leonard-inspired story, he takes a story of a bad guy going to jail and turns it into a subtle reflection on the toll of war on a man’s psyche, and the cost of hating one’s fellow man.Best of all, the package was so darn fun, you never felt the lecture on justice — RUSSELL CROWE CHRISTIAN BALE «Hjaiiai TIME WAITS FOR ONE MAN you could sit back and enjoy the ride while Russell Crowe and Christian Bale did all the heavy lifting.3) Into the Wild: Sean Penn is so earnest, he could make a potato suicidal, but in this adaptation Jon Krakauer's book, the actor- » -1' * •-•» tii.1.' - .'i •.1 »:• **¦¦’’-* - r w ¦ - »- k- 1 * remfll .vO SpongeBob Varied Programs,^ vi.'Vv" vAV Vi\ | SpongeBob jVaried Programs , v ^ ’* * TALK OF THE Townships DECEMBER 28, 2007 - JANUARY 3, 2008 PAGE 11 Station Guide 6PM | 6:30 7PM 7:30 8PM 1 8:30 9PM 9:30 10PM 10:30 11PM 11:30 12AM B News (CC) CBS Evening News-Couric Entertainment Toniqht A Ghost Whisperer Melinda must help a former rock star.A (CC) Moonlight “Oui of the Past” A (CC) NUMB3RS “Blackout” A (CC) News (CC) (:35) Ute Show With David Letterman Alec Baldwin; Shakira.ivixn Q News NBC Nightly News (CC) Jeopardy! So Murray chose ‘Somebody’s Always Saying Goodbye’ for her.Nelly Furtado joins her for the always-bub-bly ‘Daydream Believer’, and she manages a posthumous duet with Dusty Springfield on T Just Fall in Love Again’.The spring tour will include songs from the Duets album, but obviously not the women with whom she recorded the songs.“Debbie, my backing singer, is perfectly capable of doing duets,” she said matter-of-factly.“And in some places we may be able to get people to come on as guests.” As for what the legendary songbird — and former gym teacher — will do after the tour, she’s not quite sure.“Next year is my 40th year.It makes sense to tie that 40th year in with perhaps a final album, a final Canadian tour. It’s just all kind of falling into place,” she said.“I don’t know what will happen after that. That’s pretty much how I’m doing my career these day.A year in advance, maybe.” There will undoubtedly be plenty of golf. She would like to keep her title of Golf for Women magazine’s top female celebrity player, after all.She will continue to spend time with her two adult children and is considering writing an autobiography. But as for whether she will retire in the traditional sense, she’s not so sure.“I’ve been busy for so long, I don’t know whether I could.I might go a bit wingy.” Whatever happens though, she’s not fretting about it.She’s confident opportunities will present themselves at the right time.“When 1 can’t sing to my satisfaction any more, I will no longer do it.And I’ll know when that time comes because I’m such a perfectionist. It’s hard to settle for less.So we’ll see. We'll see.” Drinkies: Cont’d from Page 2 “Chocolate and orange is a wonderful combination and the light layer of orange foam is subtle, yet distinct.” Cocktail: 1/2 ounce chocolate syrup (store-bought) 1 ounce Stolichnaya Vanilla Vodka 1 ounce Creme de Cacao 1 ounce espresso (prepared and cooled) 1 ounce light cream (10 percent) Holiday Foam (see below) 3 espresso beans Holiday Foam: 1 litre orange juice 8 ounces Grand Marnier 4 sheets gelatin, 2 in.x 3.5 in.Cocktail: Pour 1/2 ounce chocolate syrup in the bottom of a chilled martini glass. In a cocktail shaker filled halfway with cracked ice, add vanilla vodka.Creme de Cacao, espresso and cream.Shake gently and strain into your chilled martini glass.Garnish with Holiday Foam and 3 espresso beans.Foam: To make the foam, mix all ingredients and pour into a whipping cream canister with a nitrogen cartridge.Gently swirl foam on top of the drink.(This makes enough foam for 10 drinks.) Figmint Champagne Mojito Here’s a drink to bring in the New Year, created by Bryan White of FigMint.Veering from mojito tradition, he uses champagne instead of the usual soda. You’ll need a muddler to mash the lime and mint, and this might be just the excuse to go out and buy one.3 lime wedges 8 mint leaves Splash of simple syrup (see note) 1 ounce White Bacardi Rum Prosecco spariding wine Lime wedge and mint leaf for garnish Place all ingredients except sparkling wine in a highball glass.Muddle for 10 to 15 seconds.Add ice to the top of the glass.Add champagne to fill.Garnish with lime wedge and mint leaf.Note: Simple syrup is easy to make: boil 2 parts sugar and 1 part water until sugar dissolves, and cool.Naughty & Nice This recipe was developed by Jay Jones and it comes with an operations manual for enjoyment: “Upon nosing the drink, the gentle yet distinct fragrance of chocolate and mint prepares the palate. The first flavours are of sweet chocolate, followed by mellow peppermint, then the refreshing effervescence of soda. The kick of strong, yet smooth and elegant, Belvedere Vodka gives substance to the balance of elements. The final taste on the palate is the lingering of subtle chocolate and faint traces of mint.” Cin cin! A dozen large leaves of fresh mint 2 ounces Belvedere Vodka 1 ounce peppermint schnapps 1 small piece of good-quality dark chocolate Soda * Mint sprig for garnish Crush the mint leaves in your hands, releasing the essential oils, then drop them into a Collins glass.Add the vodka and peppermint schnapps, then stir with a bartender’s spoon, infusing the flavour and aroma of the fresh mint leaves into the liquid.Fill the glass with ice.Using a very fine grater, liberally shave dark chocolate into the glass, covering the ice.Fill the glass with soda.Stir with the spoon, mixing the ingredients.Chocolate shavings should be mixed in and suspended throughout the drink.Add a small sprig of fresh mint as garnish.
