Convocation 2001 & # Bishop’s University, Lennoxville Dr.Bernard Shapiro Hon.Lise Thibault Charlotte Tansey Howard Brown Four new doctorates to be given at B.U.convocation Staff Four new people will be honoured with Doctor of Civil Law (honoris causa) degrees at the 2001 Bishop’s University Spring Convocation ceremony tomorrow.Howard Brown, Dr.Bernard Shapiro, Dr.Charlotte Hunter Tansey and the Honourable Lise Thibault will each receive the honourary doctorates on an afternoon where 546 students will become graduates of the university.Shapiro will also deliver the Convocation address Saturday in front of a jam-packed crowd at Mitchell Gymnasium on the Bishop’s campus. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m.Students in every Bishop’s faculty will walk across the stage, accept their diploma and become university graduates after three, four or five years of hard work.Shapiro, who is the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University in Montreal, is a graduate of both McGill and Harvard and his academic career has included professional and administrative positions at Boston University, the University of Western Ontario and University of Toronto. He has written and spoken widely on issues relating to education and has received honourary degrees from seven universities worldwide.Bishop’s honours him at this time for his leadership in Canadian higher education as well as for his achievements in public administration and service to his community.Tansey is President Emeritus of the Thomas More Institute of Montreal, an establishment dedicated to providing life-long learning in the humanities and liberal arts to adult students wishing to “expand the horizon of their understanding.” She is a member of the Association for Continuing Higher Education and has published and spoken extensively in areas related to adult learning and the liberal arts. She continues to design and lead discussion courses at the institute each year.Previously, Tansey has been awarded honourary degrees by Concordia University and Burlington College. The Honourable Lise Thibault was sworn in as the 27th Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec in January, 1997.She has always been engaged in service to her community, as an organizer of women’s and parish associations, a member of the Laval Chamber of Commerce and President of the Laval regional Canadian Red Cross, among many other activities. In 1994, she received the Woman of Merit Award from the Montreal YMCA and also was named Personality of the Year by Chatelaine Magazine.Brown is the only recipient of a Doctorate in Civil Law who has an immedi- ate connection to Bishop’s.Brown is Professor Emeritus of Music at the university and was the founding member - and for many years the only member - of the Bishop’s Department of Music.Educated at the University of Toronto before the Second World War and at Michigan after that.Brown was subsequently appointed to the Halifax Conservatory of Music and then joined Mount Allison as Chair of the music department. He was able to maintain a considerable concert career at the same time, performing both as a soloist and accompanist. In 1967 he came to Bishop’s to establish the school’s music department and almost single-handedly developed the curriculum of courses, which formed the heart of today’s music program. He continued as a part-time instructor following his retirement and was named Professor Emeritus in 1986.UNIVERSITÉ BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY ' v ¦ ¦¦ H- Stflll ' / ' : IMllllll Si |vip ïffe 1: M/V WÊÊÊÊÊÊKm ilsHI -! .""""".y 'wmm mm HI iiilli! : ?SS® v ' IwgiPt HUM ieüüËüi Hi iiatroii ill page 2 The Record • B.U.Convocation, Friday, June 1, 2001 Prize List Graduating Year Proficiency Prizes The Governor General’s Silver Medal The Chancellor’s Prize Department and University Prizes The Vice-Chancellor’s Prize The President’s Prize The Vice-President’s Prize The Hon.G.Howard Ferguson Cup The Chief Justice Greenshields Prize The Webster Prize The Eileen Healy Prize for Leadership Strathcona Foundation Plaque The Lieutenant Governor’s Award Marie-Laure Michèle Baudet Marie-Laure Michèle Baudet Maja Dumisic Caroline Christina Stierli Teresa Ann Hancock Anne Elizabeth Wormsbecker Ann-Marie Chacko Anne Elizabeth Wormsbecker Anne Elizabeth Wormsbecker Leslie June Nelles April Lepitre Anne Elizabeth Wormsbecker Ann-Marie Chacko The Bardati Prize for Continuing Education Council of Part-time Students Sesquicentennial Prize -
