you chose to give it to someone else.It takes strong people in society to work for people beyond themselves and reach beyond themselves to help others. The results that you turned out for this event were really impressive,” said Frank Johnston-Main to the wide-eyed children staring up at him from their desks. The children were very proud and knew they could not have pulled it off without a few donations apart from the funds raised during the event itself. They were quickly reminded by Johnston-Main not to be discouraged by the assistance they received to reach their goal.“It takes events to raise visibility and awareness for a cause and if they hadn’t planned the event the additional donations would not have been donated. The people that donate do so to partake in a cause that they cannot always participate in, but believe in.They see you trying to help and they want to be a part of that.” The BMP will add an inscribed leaf to the tree in the Hospital entrance to commemorate the kids’ efforts and donation in two or three months. They will also be adding a write up on the Foundation website for everyone to view; Lucy Hoblyn from Brome Lake Books and Janet Fraser of Café Floral. These four remarkable women have made us very proud and are an inspiration to many in these difficult economic times.Let us all show them our admiration for the work they do.As usual, when the women were told of their selection, all were humbled yet very honoured. We are lucky to have Ms.Lori Graham of CTV as our keynote speaker.Born and raised on the West Island of Montreal, Lori has always had a passion for performing and public speaking. All through elementary school and high school, Lori participated in numerous public speaking contests and performed in countless theatrical productions.Lori was even elected to give the valedictory address to her graduating class at Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School. While public speaking was always of great interest, academically Lori pursued both pure and applied science.Eventually she would find a way to combine her love of both sciences and languages by becoming CTV Montreal's weather presenter.Lori got her break in Montreal media while in her second year of broadcast journalism at Concordia University. She was the recipient of CJAD's A1 Cauley Award, and within weeks began working for CJAD and Mix 96 as a traffic reporter, news reporter and newscaster while completing her final year of university. She went on to graduate from Concordia with the highest aggregate marks in her program. Two years later, Lori joined the CTV family as a weather presenter during the infamous 1998 ice storm. She refers to her television debut as her "baptism by ice." She has hosted a number of shows for CTV including "Good Morning Canada" - the network's national weekend morning show.Lori is also involved in a number of local charities. She hosts CTVs "Telethon of Stars" and supports the Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone, the Children's Wish Foundation, and Ronald McDonald House Charities. There are a limited number of tickets, so hurry to reserve your place.Tickets are available by calling Lois Hardacker or Marilyn Hunter at (450) 242-2000, Donna Coates at (450)-242-2548 (evening) or Susan Burbank at (450) 243-0530 (evening).Tickets cost $50.00 with all the profits going to the youth projects that the club sponsors in the area. The evening will start with a paid bar at 6:00 pm and the meal to be served at 7:00 pm.Please call to reserve your tickets as seats are limited. This has become an annual “do not miss” event.Radio Communautaire Missisquoi cn*L 1*1 Canadian Patrmx>ine Héritant1 canadien Weekly Schedule Now live on the Internet at www.rc1mnedia.or12 Time Monday Tuesday | Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday 6:00 7:00 8:00 Musical Selection Children's Comer Children's Comer* 9:00 10:00 11:00 12:00 Community Bulletin Board/Musical Selection Mes Albums Classiques Musical Selection Around Town Marie & Lucie Bobcat Sessions A Classical Time 13:00 14:00 15:00 16:00 Community Bulletin Board/Musical Selection Musical Selection Henry's Music and Musings Ask the Pastor The Outsider* 17:00 Around Town* Marie & Lucie* Around Town* Marie & Lucie* Musical Selection Young Blood Showtime Veronica's Picks* 18:00 Community Bulletin Board/Musical Selection Penalty Box Penalty Box* 19:00 20:00 21:00 22:00 23:00 Dufur Mtn Bluegrass Let's Talk Jazz* Mostly Canadian Un-played Mostly Canadian Unplayed* Bobcat Sessions* Ask the Pastor* Burning Bush from the Hall of Flame The Ivan Hour* Burning Bush from the Hall of Flame* Dufrir Mtn Bluegrass* It's on the Record* Veronica's Picks* A Classical Time* /~ Mes Albums Classiques* DJ Blues* Poetry Un air de rien The Outsider Let's Talk Jazz The Ivan Hour Young Blood* It s on the Record DJ Blues Showtime* Overnight Musical Selection Denotes repeat program in the same week Letters With sinking heart I realise that the bizarre attempt of the previous administration of the Town of Brome Lake to change the public character of our villages and to inform the tens of millions of English-speaking people in Montreal and nearby states and provinces that they are no longer welcome (the weirdly inappropriate fleur-de-lys, the town name in large letters in French while the English name is so tiny as to be illegible, and the insistence on French-only signs) continues unchanged. So I was shocked but not really surprised to learn that the inmates still apparently running the asylum are changing the garbage collection to once every two weeks, even in the summer. When I expressed my shock on receiving this news from an employee at the town hall, she declared that she has been preparing for this by putting her smelly garbage in the freezer! Ye Gods! Anyway, I shall be away for the first month of this new regime (March), nursing the faint hope that sanity mighr prevail by the time I get back.Lionel Albert Pet of the Week BOUBOULE Hello, hello, I am Bouboule - 2 years old, male, 20 inches tall with this chunky body I was given! 1175 King St E., Sherbrooke Tuesday, March 2, 2010 page 5 Brome County News St.Paul’s, Knowlton: Turning Up, Not Down COURTESY Rev.Tim Wiebe drumming St.Paul’s parish in Knowlton managed in 2009 to reverse the trends that are causing anguish elsewhere and this in a year of local as well as worldwide economic downturn: Average 2009 weekly Sunday attendance rose by more than 10% over 2008.Operating income rose 20%.St.Paul’s has tackled its issues head-on.At the beginning of 2009, the Rev.Tim Wiebe told a meeting of parishioners, “We either face our anticipated problems now, or we will decline. The clouds are darkening, and we have to make choices. We either grow, or we will slowly disappear.” The first result of this prodding was a Parish Ministry Review.“We decided to take the temperature of the parish, to see how people were feeling, and what they were thinking about a variety of areas of our life together," says Gary Crandall, Rector’s Warden. In developing the questionnaire, members of the Corporation at St.Paul’s used several sources, including questionnaires used earlier at St.Peter's Church in Town of Mount Royal and at St.John the Baptist in Beaconsfield, as well as resources provided by the diocese over the years, especially by Mark Gibson and the Venerable Janet Griffith-John-son.A local perspective was added by Corporation members.About 135 questionnaires were sent to those on the parish list.Of these, 78 were returned, including 60 from those who said they attended church regularly.“We were overwhelmed by the number of responses, so the survey analysis took longer than we antici- pated—but it was also more exciting than we expected,” says People’s Warden Glen Mason. The questionnaire revealed that St.Paul’s is considered an essential part of Knowlton community life. The parish must not decline into obscurity and irrelevance was the obvious overall conclusion. What to do?The questionnaire revealed that the vast majority of the parish is happy with the worship, leadership and direction of St.Paul’s.Given that, what steps are needed to keep it that way, and move productively into the future?• In the past few years, there have been a variety of worship options offered at St.Paul’s, and on the basis of the questionnaire, that continues.A traditional service is offered at 8 am, and a 10 am service is a blend of traditional and contemporary elements with a strong musical and video component. On the fifth Sunday of the month a blended service is held at 9.30 am, which combines elements of the BAS, BCP and the Kenyan Rite. One area that was identified as needing improvement was communication, both within the parish itself, and to the wider Knowlton community.First efforts made in that direction are proving productive.A parish website has been developed (stpaulsblog.wordpress.com), a blog has been developed by Tim Wiebe (revtimbo.wordpress.com) and Tim has also a weekly radio show called “Ask The Pastor" on (99.1 CIDI FM, http://rcmmedia.Org/blog/category/ddi/h osts/twiebe/).Under the leadership of Joan McKinnon and Sara Creighton-Wiebe, 14 parishioners and friends from St.Paul's operate a breakfast program five days a week at Knowlton Academy—a major community outreach activity.A newly invigorated visiting program for the sick and shut-in is up and running.Sunday school, Bible study and prayer chain groups are ongoing. The parish hall is being updated to make it more useful to the community groups that use it on a weekly basis. Many parishioners participate in various community service groups, such as the Lion’s Club, The Royal Canadian Legion, the Pettes Memorial Library, Meals on Wheels, the Brome Lake Food Bank.Other outreach activities include leading various ecumenical events such as the annual Sunday service at Brome Fair.During the summer of 2009, both good and not-so-good golfers from St.Paul’s organized and participated in the Stone Duck Classic, which raised $4,500 for the Lac Brome First Responders in 2009.In 2008, the Stone Duck Classic raised $6,500 for the Moving Muscles Ride for the Muscular Dystrophy Society of Canada. This year the intended beneficiary is the Knowlton Academy Ski Program. In all, St.Paul’s will give over $19,000 this year to various local, diocesan, national and international outreach ministries. There are singing and visiting ministries in the three local senior’s residences. So what’s next? The ministry review also identified a need to attract and minister to young families.A position of Children and Family Ministries Coordinator is being considered to help with that goal.Improvements to the computer system to allow recording and transmission of services are being considered. The contemporary music group will add an electric guitar and flute and hopes to record and expand its ministry beyond the walls of the church.“This year, 2010, will be spent following up on the recommendations of the Parish Ministry Review,” says Susan Wallet, incoming Rector’s Warden.“The following year we will review once again and see how we are doing.” “We have been blessed by God, there is no doubt in our minds about that," says the Rev.Tim Wiebe, “and we are grateful to Him.We want to be faithfi.il stewards of all that God is giving us, but our first task is to be faithful to God’s most precious gift to us.His Word.We have a particular slant on the Bible- we believe that the Bible is primarily God’s Word about humanity, not humans’ words about God.Our task is to be faithful to what we believe and to prayerfully follow the course that God is setting for us.We have seen that as we do that, God is opening hearts and minds and doors for us to minister in the community and beyond. What’s next?Jesus knows and we intend to follow Him."
