Wednesday, May 11, 2005 page 3 St.Luke’s sign campaign exceeds expectations DFASFSD The St.Luke’s sign was financed by selling bricks.“We had 400 bricks at $6 each.We oversold — so now we have enough for special lighting and some landscaping," explained Don Davidson, who as well as being a sculptor is a deputy Warden.By Wendy Denman Record Correspondent Last Sunday, the congregation and friends of St.Luke’s Anglican Church in Waterloo gathered to officially unveil the artistic new sign now a prominent fixture in front of the old brick heritage church. The Right Rev.Barry Clarke, Bishop of the Diocese of Montreal, led the service of dedication, prayer and thanksgiving.“Bishop Clarke and Rev.Wilmur Davidson conducted our Sunday worship and then, at 10:30 a.m., we were joined by others, friends from different churches, people we had invited,” explained Don Davidson, a sculptor.“We went outside and during a short, but very nice ceremony, the Bishop dedicated our sign. Then we all enjoyed a light lunch in the hall.” Davidson, a longtime member of the congregation and retired designer who is in the midst of a second career as a steel sculptor, created the sign, seeing to fundraising and construction. The black sign with gold lettering is decorated with a raised folded steel cross and supported by two large brick buttresses.“I wanted to create something that expressed the feeling of the Church, that was eye catching and that fit in with the historic significance of the building,” he explained, adding that the sign was actually completed and in place last fall.“But we decided to put off the dedication until better weather. It was a moving ceremony, a nice day and we were delighted to have the Bishop with us — it gave us a lift.” St.Luke's, like many Quebec English churches, faces a dwindling and aging congregation.Currently without an incumbent, and without any active search for one.“Because we just can’t afford it.” said Davidson.St.Luke’s continues with weekly services, twice a month welcoming retired incumbent Rev.Wilmur Davidson.“We also have a lay leader who comes once a month and for the rest, our congregation leads the worship.” For worship last Sunday with the Bishop the numbers doubled.“We were very pleased with the attendance. We had maybe 80 at the dedication and reception that followed,” he concluded.Sutton preschool celebrates its the Knowlton Antique Show over the Victoria Day weekend.Treasures: Cont’d from Page l “I’m particularly fond of what has become known as Arts and Crafts Jewelry. They are pieces handcrafted by Hnglish designers between 1885 and 1914.” Jones explains, of the highly sought after jewelry made of silver or low carat gold and adorned with semi-precious stones.“I still come across pieces, often by accident because most often people don’t realize what they have and don’t attribute much value to them.” According to Jones, the pieces she finds in Canada most often came over from England with war brides as the European conflict came to a close. The table pieces bear distinctive English hallmarks on their backings and have a definite arts and crafts appeal as they often feature peacock colouring in their voyant enamelling.Should anyone have a piece and be wondering if it may be worth something, Jones will be pleased to give them an appraisal during the weekend.Jones trades in the high-end Liberty pewter reproductions from St-Regis in London. These pieces, in particular the reproduction pieces modelled on those by Archibald Knox, hail from England’s Isle of Man, and fetch top prices at shows such as this one.The distinctive coloured enamel medallions are telltale of the period and style.Jones is always on the lookout for collector pieces such as 1940-ish handmade silver pieces from the Taxco borough of Mexico City. Here is a true example of what once was considered inferior, quasi tourist grade jewelry pieces skyrocketing in value because of their rarity and the level of craftsmanship they required to confect.“I’ll be wearing one at the show, they really are quite exquisite,” she says.Jones’ also carries an array of fine estate jewelry, including engagement rings, wedding bands and earrings, all adorned with diamonds and sapphires.“The engagement rings have always sold well at the Knowlton Show, most often to people wanting their engagement jewelry to have a unique appeal.” Jones finds the pieces in her collection from advertisements, at auctions, from word of mouth and at antique shows where she often finds herself buying some pieces as she sells others.Aside from the local markets, she deals with clients in England and on occasion in the U.S.Like so many other dealers, Jones enjoys all the wonders the Townships offer while participating in the show.“I stay with friends in the area, in fact I attend the Knowlton Show not only because I do so well, but I like the area,” she says. Now that she has retired, Jones is planning to nearly double The Editor Dogs are grateful Dear Editor, On behalf of myself and my fellow pooches-in-stores, I would like to thank all of the local citizenry and visitors who come into our shops and voted for their favourite in-store canine. This is the fifth year of the Knowlton Best-in-store Dog competition and Pageant (with our visiting dog cousins joining in our annual parade) and we hope you will continue to support us.In so doing, my first home, the Frontier Animal Society (in Beebe) and the Montérégie SPCA benefit from your generosity. Thanks to you, we pooches have raised $5,500 from the first four pageants.King Henry of Paddie’s Boutique raised the lion's share of this amount ranking first each year. This year he has retired from active campaigning but will continue to raise funds for this cause dear to his heart.Henry is President Emeritus and will lead the parade this year and every year to come.I must go get groomed now to look my best for you.Pawfully yours, P.J.(the pooch) England Hill P.S.Don’t forget to vote early and vote often. Also my mistress says that on our daily walks (especially on the paths) its seems many people are forgetting the scoop part of the dog walk. This gives us dogs a bad name and so we encourage other dog owners to be responsible in this regard.A word of well-deserved praise Dear Editor, On Saturday, April 9, I was privileged enough to witness a spectacular dance show put on by the Sutton Dance troop. My five-year old son was one of the dancers along with many of my friends’ children ranging in age from 3 to over 20.The teachers from Granby did a great job with the choreography, and the volunteers from Sutton who do all the organizing were valued for their time and the hard work put into such a wonderful show.Unfortunately, a few days after the show one of the organizers stopped me on the street to ask me my opinion and that of my family who also attended.I gave her great reviews. It was then that with some sadness she informed me that they had received a couple of negative comments. At the end of our conversation she told me that it is a shame that people have no hesitations calling to complain but that people rarely call to say “job well done.” Well I am taking this opportunity to say job well done.I have no complaints and my son is eagerly looking forward to dancing again next year.A sincere thank you to the girls from Granby and a huge thanks to Louise, Diane, Heather and Tina.As for those who only want to complain, walk a mile or less in their shoes then reconsider your negative comments.Kellie Grenier Sutton Brome County 88 CROSSFIELD Front row: Sue MacLean, Marie-Pierre Champagne, Linda Bresee, Chantal Yelle.Back row: John Staton, Norman Labreque, Peter Reindler, Bill Duke, Kimberly Band, Claude St-Amand, Denis Riel and Richard Staples: All smiles for a silver anniversary.By Maurice Crossfield The Royal LePage Action golf tournament is celebrating its silver anniversary this year by aiming to put even more silver into the coffers of Massey-Vanier High School.“We’re aiming for $25,000 for our 25th anniversary,” said Richard Staples, co-president of the event.Over the last quarter-century the Royal LePage Action gold tournament has raised $130,000.The proceeds have been used by both the English and French sides of Massey-Vanier, primarily for awards and bursaries, but also for athletics and the arts.“The key to it is to help the kids on both sides,” Staples said.“It makes a big difference when a student gets $1,000 to go to college.” This year’s tournament will take place on June 27 at the Cowansville Golf Club, with breakfast at 8 a.m.and a 10:30 a.m.shotgun start. It’s a Vegas-style tournament that will also include prizes for feats of skill such as the longest drive, closest to the hole or the best missed shot.Prizes are also being donated for a Chinese auction and there will be random draw door prizes. The role of honorary president this year has been given to furniture store owner Denis Riel and his family. The Riels have been past donors to Massey-Vanier and various other regional charities.Money from the tournament is raised in a number of ways: At $125 per foursome for a round of golf; or you can sponsor a tee or a green or a contest ($100 each); perhaps you could sponsor a kiosque at a tee-off ($250) where you could meet the golfers and show your products and services; you could even donate door prizes or auction items. The day wraps up with a five-course meal, at $50 a plate.“Although the tournament has evolved considerably the primary objective remains the same,” said Peter Reindler, president of Royal LePage Action and co-president of the event.“To enjoy ourselves and to celebrate a great day for an even better cause.” For more information on getting involved or to get an entry form, contact Richard Staples (450-266-3928), Peter Reindler (450-266-7711), Marie-Pierre Champagne (450-266-3772), or Kimberly Eland (450-266-7711).ATVs: CONT’D FROM PAGE 4 mandatory growing tensions between those involved, expect more regulations to be coming down the pike. The upcoming consultations will help to shape those rules, hopefully into something everyone can live
