An exhibit of Bruce’s paintings is up at Salle Alec and Gerard Pelletier in Sutton until Aug.1.The paintings are mostly large format and all were created in the last 10 years.“All are landscape inspired and include some from the series of the river near Stanbridge East.“Lately a shift in my approach toward these familiar themes has resulted in some new and different artworks. The need to explore new ground has heightened my appreciation for play and exploration.“With this mindset I’ve experimented with various techniques besides oils — collage, sketching, pastels and mixed media.” Bruce studied fine arts at cégep and earned a bachelor majoring in studio arts at Concordia University in 1983.She has also been a young resident artist on a tuition scholarship at the Banff School of Art.Over the Please see Painting on Page 12 COURTESY L.BRUCE Reflections on the River by Lynda Bruce was voted the best painting by visitors at the recent spring show at Sherbrooke's fine arts museum. For kids, a train on rubber wheels Quilting, pottery, jewelry for all By Wendy Denman Brome County News correspondent One of the largest local craft shows takes place in and around Cowansville’s Parc Davignon next month. Now in its eighth edition, the show boasts artisans and artists displaying a myriad of handicrafts from paintings, woodworking, ceramics and pottery to soaps, jewelry, dried flowers, sewing, quilting and food products.“There’s no flea market stuff,” says event coordinator Tait Hauver.“We make sure everything on display is hand- made or homemade and of good quality.” But that’s not all.“It’s more than a crafts show, it’s a family weekend. We have lots of activities for the kids — rides on a fire engine through town, Loblaws is bringing in a train on rubber wheels that will give rides circuiting the park, as well we’ll have musical entertainment, face painting, bilingual storytelling, chainsaw carving demonstrations and lots of surprises,” Hauver said.A raffle will leave lucky winners with items donated by the many artisans. And the Sûreté du Québec and RCMP will have information booths and demonstrations.“Sure, it’s a chance for people to buy some Please see Crafts on Page 12 Make things better Assistant Sales Manager Contractor utmta 165 rued* Salabarry 450 263-6666 iflevesque 6 cowansviBe.toyota.ca I* Machinery work Hydraulic hammer (rock breaker) I» Private roads • Land shaping • Drainage Artificial lakes/ponds * Septic systems pAru X • Demolition Foundation Avbll \ • Topsoil - Brome County News Wednesday, June 27, 2007 page 3 Constantin’s Salon des refusés Couleurs urbain Oi««*fey ISM COURTESY Constantin has opened a gallery in Sutton.c VJ A craziness is present’ By Alarma Fahey Brome County News correspondent .reative consciousness is an issue that George Constantin constantly explores not only through his own work, but I through his ability to combine his energy with that of other artists in order to exhibit collectively.“When the mind is in perfect balance on its mental plane, it reaches stratospheric heights wherein the self is instructed in the science of life, death, personal and universe evolution, with all its worlds and inspiring, regenerating knowledge,” writes Bernard de Montreal in his book, Beyond the Mind as he addresses the simple act of creation.“It expands the academic virtues of the intellect and voids the naive spirituality of the ignorant ego.” This summer George Constantin, known in the art world by his last name only, is opening a new exhibition space in Sutton for a special group of artists.“They are like Van Gogh or Gauguin, the Impressionists who at one time were considered below standard.“They belonged to the Salon des Refusés, because the work was not accepted by the elite in the art world,” said Constantin when asked what makes this gallery different from all the others that exist in the Townships.“These artists are artists that are on the edge; a craziness, a refinement is present that challenges the public to stretch the intellectual construct of any given thought about art.” Mixed media, fine furniture, metal sculpture, and watercolours grace the space on the Main.Constantin says he is still open to receiving artists. The gallery will remain open till October, however if enough interest is shown, Constantin says, the space may be opened year round. As with the famous artisans of the past, most of those who will be showing, have other occupations that pay the bills; the art, their art, is the result of the life stream, of the connection to source. The new gallery is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m.till 5 p.m., all summer long, at 34 Principal St.Sutton.For more information, call 450- Social Notes Fulford G; Though he gripes about new trucks that include more options than a cellphone plan - which raises their sticker price — McNally is still convinced a pickup’s a better value.“1 truly believe it’s tougher than a car and will ultimately last longer,” he says.Like me, McNally is also well above six-feet tall, hence susceptible to the leg cramps and scalp burns dished out by most compact and mid-sized cars.“So if you want something that you can actually fit in that’s not a pickup, you’re looking at $400 to $500 a month for payments (for a full-sized sedan or SUV)." In the end, there were practical reasons for keeping my F-150.Truthfully, though, the decision was based as much on ego as ergonomics.Sure, that firewood’s heavy, but not as much as my burden of self-image.Field, too, acknowledges this kind of male motivation.“Just driving by and seeing a guy loading up his pickup,” he adds, before swallowing hard, “I’d think, that used to be me!” About a week after he said that, Field did, in fact, return to his rural roots and bought a 1994 Ford Ranger. And his fort is coming along nicely.Columnist Maurice Crossfield will return.¦ m wm I I Brome County News Wednesday, June 27, 2007 page 5 Battling the brambles for garden space Time for a transfusion He’s a truck driver who takes the occasional stab at stand-up comedy.or maybe it’s the other way around. At any rate, my friend Big John is quite accomplished at both.Whenever he sees an acquaintance who appears to be stressed, pale, or piqued, he reaches into his pocket and takes out a quarter or loonie.Proffering the coin to the pasty individual in question, he says something like, “You look a little tired; take this and go down to the SPCA and get yourself a pint of blood.” After battling with encroaching, tenacious blackberry bushes to reclaim some lost gardening territory, I did feel tired. And, given the natural prickly porcupine-like defensive shield of said brambles, especially when they’re seven feet tall and more, seeking a blood transfusion wasn’t completely out of the question. My weapon was effective, if primitive — an old hand scythe with a thick stubby brush blade. The challenge was getting close enough to the base of the spiked and menacing plants without painful entanglements to lop them off close to ground level.Decked out in heavy dark pants, hooded jacket and safety goggles, in weak light I could’ve passed for the Grim Reaper. The plan was to attack the unwanted growth in the relative coolness of early morning or late evening, but that didn’t work.As is often the case, my theory didn’t yield the desired results when applied in the field.or the garden. In a minute or so, perspiring pro- The Country Squire Brian Eddington A Waterloo Weekend i DAVID ANDERSON Music fans were treated to a special show Saturday night in Waterloo as blues artist Angel Forrest hit the stage as part of the St-Jean-Baptiste celebrations held at the new Waterloo beach.Reminiscent of Janis Joplin, Forrest sang hits like ‘Me and Bobby Mcgee' and Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here'.Forrest entertained the big blue weekend crowd with an energy-filled show from beginning till end, performing in both French and English.THEATRE LAC BROME A Summer Festival of English Language Theatre in Knowlton - starting June 29 Noel Coward's * Knowlton House & Garden Tour Wednesday July 11 * Mid-Summer Gala Saturday July 28 Star Quality d by Christopher 1 Adapted by Christopher I uscombe Buoyant Billions "A Comedy of No Manners" by Bernard Shaw Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury & Les Deux Aveugles de Jacques Offenbach SPECIAL PbKK>KMANCfcS Three Old Bags with Lissa Israel, Pina MarkuTfcmma Stevens Bowser & Blue Arts Knowlton, 9 Mont Echo, Knowlton, Qc, ImAUnNEVvTh8oua’UrnWlh (450)242-1395,242-2270 www.theatrelacbrome.ca fusely, I’d chucked off most of the protective gear. With only gloves, baseball cap and goggles, the battle was re-joined.Tactics changed too.Instead ofwading into the bush- - es with a good windup and hefty swing, I sneaked the blade behind individual big stalks, sliced a small cut near ground level, then popped the thing off with a quick jerk of the blade.Again, so went the theory.Problem was, as with the big swing approach, if the blade didn’t slice completely through the bramble, the stock tended to snap towards the operator’s head and neck.At one point I had to lay down the scythe carefully and remove a pricker that stuck in the flesh behind my right ear.Another large stalk struck through my cap, square on top of the head.(According to my French friends, “square” is the perfect term to describe that particular area.) After some ranting, including really bad words that (hopefully) no one was around to hear, I tipped the cap back to a central position and continued.Bare neck and arms suffered significant scratches and punctures, but overheating wasn’t a problem.Later, attempting to remove my baseball cap, I discovered it was stuck to my head.Given as how there’s little natural protection left on top, the prickers had penetrated the cap sufficiently to perform impromptu acupuncture on my scalp.Enough blood had been let that, when dried, caused the cap to adhere to the skin.I considered, briefly, leaving it on for a couple of days; after all, some cool guys and rappers seem never to take off their headgear.Or for fun, I could wrap my head in a really big cloth and try to get on a US-bound aircraft. In the meantime, as the new expanded garden prospers, head and other wounds have healed nicely.A new neighbour and tenant has demonstrat- ed a keen interest in cultivating edible things, and this is to be encouraged.Exotic, off-beat, important-sounding herbs and veggies are sprouting up all over.To date, I haven’t had the heart to elaborate on the down sides: how increased production means more work and added exposure to airborne plagues and pestilences, plant-eating bugs and much bigger freeloaders like raccoons, deer, groundhogs and the children of visiting city people. But maybe we’ll be really lucky this time around.HlflPj ïonoi Marina7 .t—iiii min in ' 1 Knowlton • BBQ ON DECK DAILY • SUCCULENT SPARE RIBS & SPICY CHICKEN WINGS WATERFRONT BISTRO A BAR • SEASON BOAT SLIPS • BOAT LAUNCH • ICE CREAM • GAS BAR THE COOLEST ATMOSPHERE! This Canada Day in Knowlton, Hoyt and the Guides will be at the opening ceremonies showing off their latest project. They have built their own horses and are simulating the famous musical ride of the RCMP.The horses are made out of recycled materials (several merchants in town provide supplies to the Guides for their various activities). And the girls will be going to Ottawa in August to visit the national stables of the RCMP musical ride. But how did this all start?Thirty years ago, Linda Hoyt was encouraged to become a Brownie leader by 18:00 18:00 - 19:00 19:00 - 20:00 20:00 to closing Dusk Thanks to our sponsors Thanks to all the volunteers 4* Dannie Lotion, prop.1081 Knowlton Road.West Brome Maryanne Goyette, who was Sutton’s Brown Owl (the big kahuna).Hoyt had two young daughters, Amanda and Melinda, who were soon to become Brownies. She agreed to try it out and volunteered for her first camp.It was June, and the weather was nasty.Rainy and cold, the girls and the leaders made their way up Mont Sutton for a camp that would be so miserable weather wise that the birds were walking.Nonetheless, it proved to be so much fun that Hoyt never even gave it a second thought: she was hooked.“Being a leader is fun, adventurous, and the girls have so much to give and they want to be a part of the community. Each year we visit the residences. In Knowlton, we visit Knowlbanks, Manoir Lac Brome, Knowlton and Crandell Residence,” said Hoyt. Those are seniors residences. The girls bring snacks and they talk with people and then sing or dance.Often they do their pledge to the Guides before they commence with the visit. The seniors enjoy having the youth about and the girls get a charge out of all the different things they see — wheelchairs, gurneys, people who are still autonomous, others who aren’t.It takes a lot of energy to organize these events, as the timing has to be just right, for the attention span of the girls and of the seniors.“Hopefully the girls will continue in the program and as they become adults, realize what an important service they provide by just being there to bring a smile to an elderly person’s face, or to just sit and listen to someone who really wants to tell their story, maybe for the last time,” said Hoyt.Hoyt does more than just the Guides, however.Hoyt’s activities at her local church, Calvary United Church on Maple Street, started about 30 years ago as well. She helps organize rummage sales and is one of the mainstays in setting up luncheons.Years ago, Hoyt started an ecumenical afternoon for the local children. It was a Thursday gathering that saw many of the local children from various faiths join together around a craft, community information and songs and dance. One thing is for sure: with Hoyt, it’s often about the kids. From Guide camps with an attendance as large as 200 to camps of five, Hoyt has been there for the girls. She has been instilling the spirit of giving and reaping the rewards of genuine love for ones’ community.Linda Hoyt is a Sutton treasure, enlightened and not even looking for enlightenment. And that’s what makes the time so well spent. To join The Canadian Girl Guides in the Sut-ton/Knowlton area, call Linda Hoyt at 450-538-3789.Or visit www.canadian-girlguides.ca.Canada Day TIMKEN Where You Turn Timken Canada LP 4 Victoria, Bedford Quebec, Canada Phone 450-248-3316 PARWD®^' lD.EIL E».SMALL MOTOR KLI'AIKS Outboard motors, chainsaws, tractors, lawnniowors, ATVs (450) 263-4435 Deadline: 10 a.m.working day previous to publication Wednesday, June 27, 2007 page 9 Call Sherbrooke: (819) 569-9525 between 830 a.m.and 430 pj*.E-mail: dassad@sherbrookerecord.com or Knowiton: (450) 242-1188 between 9:00 ajh.and 400 pm.Brome County News CLASSIFIED Or mail your prepaid classified ads to 88A Lakeside, Knowiton, Quebec JOE 1V0 The Record, P.O.Box 1200.Sherbrooke.Quebec J1H 5L6 0611 Property (or Sale BEAUTIFUL HOMES in beautiful towns: Dunham, Frelighsburg, Sutton, Knowiton.www.collini.Ga.bkr.Maurizo Collini (450) 242-2472.DEAR HOMEOWNER: Thinking of selling?Put my 20 years experience and my Diamond Award (top 3% of all Quebec Royal LePage agents) to work for you.I am pleased to donate a portion of my commission to the charity of your choice.Free estimates.Knowiton, Sutton, Cowansville and region., Royal LePage Action Broker.Sharyl Thompson (450) 266-6888 Website: www.sharyl.com 030 Property Wanted LOOKING FOR A FARM with 75 acres or more between Frelighsburg, Sutton and Knowiton area.No real estate agents.Claude (514) 208-2500.035 For Rent LARGE 3 BEDROOM Bungalow for rent in Knowiton, furnished or not.Available immediately.3 or 6 month lease.Call (450) 263-7083 or (450) 531-3405.100 Job Opportunities WANTED - 27 people to lose 15-75 pounds.Risk free.Call 1-800-934-4130, www.career 4u.info 100 Job Opportunities APARTMENTS & OFFICE CLEANERS opportunities.Part time or full time.Night, day, weekend possibilities.Flexible hours. No experience necessary.Sart today!
