in the borough on Wednesday-Thursday night Fires Leave Dozens Hornless By Jen Young Special the to The Record v « ¦—ithin hours of each other, % / two major Lennoxville fires \I \I injured two police officers Y Y and left more than 30 people, including 25 Bishop’s students and a family of five with a newborn baby, standing on College and Queen Streets watching their personal possessions and homes go up in smoke.Fire officials say neither blaze wast suspicious in nature or connected to each other, but for those implicated in the traumatic events, many left with only the clothes on their backs. The only blessing, they say, is that no one was se- riously injured.“I’m okay because I have a place to sleep tonight, but I worry about everyone else,” said 3053 College Street building manager, Samantha Brooks, who was on scene for the first Wednesday night blaze.“Between 8 and 8:30 p.m.I got a call from a tenant saying that they smelled smoke and the alarm was going off.I first thought that someone must have burnt their toast or something because nothing like this has ever happened before, but when I saw the flames coming out of apartment number four, the terror set in.” According to Brooks, the blaze originated from the apartment of an elderly man and her concern turned to him.“He has a dog,” she said.“The dog had run out of the building but he didn’t know that so he stayed in his apartment for a long time looking for it.When he finally came out his eyebrows were singed and you could tell he inhaled a lot of smoke. He was sent to the hospital, but he’s going to be okay.Thankfully nobody was seriously injured, especially the family with the baby.” The family the manager was referring to was Kathy Gagnon, Brandon Mc-Comb, and their four, three, and one-month-old children, who lived across the hall from where the fire originated.Cont’d on Page 4 EH Paquin LET'S TALK ABOUT MY MONEY, AND STUDIES THAT ARE PICTURE PERFECT FOR ME.'certain conditions and News SES sets the pace for peace i 4 IhmA By Corrinna Pole ——.-hursday morning the students of Sherbrooke Elementary School (SES) lined up with their JL.teachers, parents and peer helpers and began to walk as part of the annual Pacific Path Peace March. As they left the north parking lot of the school and walked around the block to the south parking, students were asked to reflect on what peace meant to them and how they could better incorporate it into their daily lives. The march was a celebratory kick-off of a yearlong series of school events and activities that promote peacemaking.Kindergarten teacher Sandra Greenwood has been taking part in the peace march since it started.“This is our fourth year doing it and it’s part of a program we use called Pacific Path which promotes peace in the school,” explained Greenwood.“We have a lesson we teach every two weeks LOTO QUÉBEC as well as a school wide assembly that we have every month, it deals with a different theme about our feelings as well as how we manage them.Things such as how to solve problems properly and how to ask for help properly.” SES also makes efforts to get older children involved in helping younger ones to think about positive solutions to solve their own problems. The school has trained several students in grades four, five and six to act as “Peer Mediators” on the field during recess time.Although teachers are still present and available to students in need, using older students that younger ones look up to appears to be an effective solution at getting them to think in the most positive and peaceful way on their own.“We talk to the students over and over about the steps they can take as well as the different choices they can make but having the peer mentors there doing it, as well as the other students seeing it, helps the kids to see something else can be done,” said Greenwood.Draw results: 2009-09-09 CORRINNA POLE 03 06 17 27 28 44 Winners Prizes 6/6 0 $3,605,515.00 Loto-Québec, the latter shall prevail By Doug McCooeye îe three liggest life science and health technology organizations in Quebec have united. In a deal that was made official in a press conference on Tuesday at the CHUS, Innovation and Economic Development Sherbrooke (IEDS), Montreal In-Vivo (MIV), and Pôle Quebec Chaudière-Appalaches (PQCA) joined forces in the hopes of becoming a global-player in the life science and health technology sector.Representatives from all three companies signed a three-year deal in the presence of Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, MLA for Saint-Francois and Minister responsible for the Estrie Region.“It is an unprecedented gesture, an innovative gesture, one of true optimism for life sciences and health technology in Quebec,” said an excited Pierre Belanger of IEDS.His company is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of economic development and innovation in the Sherbrooke region. The goal of the partnership is to get outside enterprises to consider basing their organizations in Quebec.“Quebec has lost its luster in the world of life sciences these last few years,” noted Belanger.“It’s time for us to reclaim our spot.” Carl Veil, President of the PQCA, pointed out that while the three organizations seem to be in competition, similar alliances elsewhere in the life science and health technology world have worked.“A number of European organizations, like in France and the Nordic countries, understood the importance of uniting forces to multiply their potential to grow,” said Veil.“It allowed regional groups to penetrate the markets that were previously difficult for them to reach.By uniting our forces, we will inspire better practices and will assure a more efficient representation in the global market.” The PQCA is an economic development agency for the Quebec and Chaudière-Appalaches regions.Tuesday’s press release describes MIV as a not-for-profit economic development organization dedicated to the enrichment of life sciences and health technologies. The life science and health technology sector provides employment for around 41 000 people in 770 Quebec-based organizations and research centers.Another 80 foreign-based organizations have braches throughout the province.A little rain never hurt anyone, and with the exceptiuon of Saturday, weekend weather looks good Ben by Daniel Shelton Weather TODAY: be providing $4.85 million in financial aid to help move the Magog library to its new location: the old Sainte-Mar-guerite-Marie Church. The money will be used to restore the outside of the former church, renovate the building’s basement and interior structure, and help with the installation of the new library. The City of Magog will finance the balance of the project.“By re-using this old building that has such a high symbolic value, we are subscribing to the principles of sustainable development and giving value to our heritage,” said Pierre Reid, Member for Orford. The contribution by the Quebec Ministry of Culture, Communications, and the Condition of Women is part of the Quebec Infrastructure Plan that started in the Fall of 2007.The cultural component of the plan is to receive $1.2 billion by 2013.Built in 1950, the Sainte-Mar-guerite-Marie Church is four times larger than the current Magog library. The extra space will allow the library to expand its services. The library has plans to expand its book and audio-visual inventory, its consultation and Internet services, as well as expand their activities department.$hermag gening back on track Shermag Inc., a high-quality drivers may want to make a trip up to the Carrefour de 1’Estrie and take advantage of a test drive in a virtual driving simulator.Ecole de Conduite CFA recently purchased the unit, the first of its kind in the Townships, to allow students to experience technical training in road safety in a risk-free environment. From now until Sunday, the simulator that includes three display screens with a 180-degree view, a blind zone screen, car cockpit, and training curriculum will be available for demonstrations. The complicated technology is designed and manufactured by Montreal based Virage Simulation.Driving schools, réadaptation centers, research centers and universities in Quebec, Ontario and Europe employ their car and truck simulators, which retail for $75,000.Danny Grenier, director, product development, was on hand to set up and unveil the unit Thursday.DANNY GRENIER OF VIRAGE SIMULAnONDFASFSD Ecole de Conduite CFA is demonstrating the Townships'first driving simulator, which combines technology and training to create better drivers, in the Carrefour de VEstrie until Sunday.“(The simulators) are used to train drivers and gets people to a more advance driving stage a lot faster,” Grenier told The Record.“What we’ve seen in driving schools is instead of taking two to four hours to learn a concept they can do it in one hour or less. The ratios may not be correct but the concept is that you can learn a lot faster and get to a good or expert driving level faster.” In addition to getting on the road faster, the simulators may also help to create safer drivers who take the time to rationalize their reactions in an emergency.Cont’d on Page 6 Loose Dog Attacks Woman By Doug McCooeye A loose dog attacked a woman in the Lac-à-la-Truite sector of Orford on September 7th.According to a report from the Régie de police de Memphrémagog, the woman was out for a walk at around 11:20 on Monday morning when, seemingly out of nowhere, four large dogs began running towards her.The woman took off in an attempt to escape, but one of the more aggressive dogs managed to catch her and attack.Once it was upon her, the dog bit down hard on the victim’s knee and thigh before witnesses could wrestle the canine off.The rescuers, including the dog’s owner, helped the woman back to her residence. The victim eventually visited a clinic where she required a few stitches to close up the wounds.Leading up to the attack, the dog had been in a vehicle, but managed to escape through an open window.“Even if the woman decides not to press charges, the owners of all four dogs could still be exposed to fines under municipal regulation,” explained Paul Tear, spokesperson for the Memphrémagog police via press-release.Each owner could face up to $100 in fines plus damages. The Memphrémagog police would like to remind pet owners that they are responsible for the behavior of their animals. The rules should be respected in order to avoid potential fines and civil action.“[B]ut more than anything, they should be followed to avoid a situation where someone could suffer a major injury and be potentially scarred for life,” noted Tear in the press-release.Playing September! 1th
