Ü WÉÊÏi i s Going Viral Ellen Goldfinch T|his New Year’s Eve will mark the 40th anniversary of ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin ’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest (starting at 10 p.m.).That’s the name of the show now and it certainly is a mouthful.You’ve probably noticed that there’s a lot more Seacrest and a lot less Clark as the years go by and for some of us, that’s a good thing.New Year’s Eve is usually a time when I invite friends over for supper and bubbly and we toast the New Year in without a crowd around us.That’s the way I like it and that’s the way that 1 hope it will be this year.As a native New Yorker, however, i am absolutely and irrevocably compelled to watch the TV broadcast of that glittering ball dropping in Times Square and year after year, I yell out the countdown just as I did when 1 was a kid in our seventh floor apartment.My neighbours here are lucky that I don’t bang a pot with a spoon out the window the way that I was allowed to do back then.Traditions die hard.ABC has kept up its New Year’s tradi- tion of trotting out the miraculously preserved Dick Clark who, in spite of a stroke and enormous difficulties in speaking, is right there with effervescent Ryan Seacrest toasting the New Year from New York City to Los Angeles.Would Lady GaGa have made it on American Bandstand?Of course she would, and she will be entertaining the crowds at Times Square.Included in the broad- cast is a history-making duet (that’s how the promo reads) between Carlos Santana and Justin Bieber.People my age, can’t you just hear Ed Sullivan introducing that act: “And now, here’s something for both the youngsters and their parents.” We live in a culture that shuns old age, something that I’m getting a little uncomfortable with as I get older, so I’m not sure how I feel about having to look at the hair job and face job that Mr.Clark presents while he struggles to get a sentence out.Does this make me ageist?It’s difficult to decide whether Dick Clark’s annual appearance on New Year’s Eve is a profile in courage or an extreme example of how celebrities such as Cher, Joan Rivers, and Dick Clark fight age with plastic surgery and present us with frighteningly expressionless faces that are far from entertaining and border on the horrific.Katherine Hepburn was a marvelous example of an actress who allowed herself to age in the public eye and did so with a style that outdid Clark, Rivers and Cher by a long shot.Seeing Dick Clark try to look forever young is comparable to spending New Year’s with Great Expectations’ Miss Hav-isham in her 40-year-old wedding dress.I only let myself peek at the “ageless one” just before midnight.Other New Year’s Eve options: If another New Year’s with Clark and Seacrest doesn’t appeal, PBS is broadcasting two specials, Hugh Laurie/Let Them Talk: A Celebration of New Orleans Blues (including Dr.John, Tom Jones, and Allan Toussaint) at 9 p.m.and at 10, Coldplay with a special New Year’s Eve Austin City Limits that features songs from their latest album.For country music lovers.Fox is broadcasting American Country New Year’s Eve Live, beginning at 11 p.m.Here’s to a great New Year, readers, and happy watching.Ellen Goldfinch may be reached at radiomother@yahoo.ca QNEK 2012 auditions for the 19th theatrical season MATTHEW FARFAN ¦iv-.'* müÊà w 1 Award-winning QNEK Productions, international theatre company in residence at the Haskell Opera House, will be holding auditions for the 19th season entitled “Good Things Come in Small Packages.” On January 6, Friday, 7 to 9 p.m.auditions for Ruth-less! Dark, cautionary fairy tales and fables are the Gray Matters Air Farce gang returns for New Year special without Roger Abbott By Bill Brioux The Canadian Press When the Air Farce gang returns with their latest year-end special this Sunday night on CBC, viewers will notice some key changes to the troupe.Gone is beloved co-founder Roger Abbott, who passed away last March from complications with leukemia.He was 64.Fellow founder Don Ferguson had already discussed carrying on the 40-year-old comedy troupe’s tradition of creating New Year’s specials when Abbott’s death brought urgency to those plans.“We wanted to give the new guys — Alan Park, Craig Lauzon and Penelope Corrin — the opportunity to carry on with the Farce and shine at least once a year on television,” says Ferguson.Joining Air Farce’s comedy cast for the first time Sunday night is Arnold Pin-nock, an actor known for dramatic parts on Canadian series such as “Combat Hospital” and “The Listener.” He also boasts Second City, “Life with Derek” and other comedy credits on his resume.A visit to the Toronto set two weeks ago to witness the taping of the New Year’s special found Pinnock fitting in nicely.He was busy playing a 6-foot-2 Oprah Winfrey, and, in another sketch, getting even crazier as Mike Tyson.“We all remember Tom Cruise jumping up and down on the couch but Oprah lets it go too,” says Pinnock.In one of those crazy showbiz twists, the actor has actually been with the Farce before.Bom in England but raised in Scarborough, Ont., he studied radio and television arts in college and landed a gig as an intern at CBC while still in his teens.One of the first shows he was assigned to as a production assistant was “Air Farce,” then just beginning a 16-year run as a weekly CBC comedy series.“Don and Luba and Roger and all the gang were so kind to me,” says Pinnock.Ferguson remembers him back then as “a bright light and a welcome sight on the floor.” Dietmar Niemetz, still an Air Farce technical producer after 18 years, told Ferguson at the recent tapings that “Arnold always did a terrific job, whatever it was he had to do.” When Pinnock left his bottom rung CBC gig after a year to pursue his dream of acting and comedy, he kept in touch ConTd on page 12 main offerings from this Atlanta-based production company, that hosts many of its amazing short films on its website.From the light-hearted tale of Bobby Watkins (who steals his mother’s day planner so everyday can be his birthday), to Heartless - This Montreal-made science fiction series from Seth Mendelson and Joe Baron won me over not only for its homegrown talent, but also its Seth Mendelson r*- great storytelling.Yet another dark, quirky and mysterious series - 1 realize now that I’ve given you a few and that you may be judging my tastes - the series follows young A1 who is abducted by a strange man in a mask, and seemingly replaced by a double.Time gets a little wonky, and you’re never quite sure what you’re seeing in this series, but it all plays out beautifully in a series whose quality belies its modest NFB budget.This series, along with many others I’ve discovered from Montreal, has made me optimistic about local talent.Theater and film students especially, take heed! Putting a figurative gun to my head I’ve selected the following works as outstanding, both for their writing and for the stories they tell.Collectively these novels attest to the thriving state of contemporary crime fiction.If you missed them earlier, here’s a chance to catch up.Philip Kerr Field Gray Building on his fine Berlin Noir series, Philip Kerr’s latest work.Field Gray, features German ex-cop and PI Bernie Gunther.Not surprisingly, as the book opens Bernie is already in trouble, arrested by Americans looking for gun smugglers off the shores of pre-Castro Cuba.Returned to Germany to face investigation for war crimes, Bernie’s actions will be scrutinized by a pair of American prosecutors who have little sympathy for, and apparently even less understanding of, the exigencies of war.The balance of the tale spans a twenty-year period from the mid-30s to the mid-50s, covering the buildup to World War II, the war itself and finally its aftermath.Layer by layer, Bernie’s actions during the war are laid bare to the reader, who cannot help but ask himself, what would I have done in that situation?Peppered with dark humour.Field Gray explores the moral landscape of the Second World War, where it seems no one can lay claim to the high ground.Bernie’s character may be ambiguous, but his questions are.probing and he is not easily put off from examining in painful detail the intersection where conscience and compromise collide.Kerr explores this moral no-man’s-land, offering penetrating insights without ever lapsing into an apologia.James Lee Burke Feast Day of Fools In a sleepy Southwest border town, aging sheriff Hack Holland is confronted by an account of a man tortured to death in the desert.The evidence is shaky: the sole alleged eyewitness is an alcoholic ex-boxer known for having visions.But Holland is old school, and reluctantly drives out to look into things for himself.The barren landscape harbours a rogues’ gallery of misfits and miscreants, including a mysterious Chinese woman known for sheltering illegals and a born-again lay preacher wrestling with demons of his own, and other, even less-welcome species inhabiting the remote region.To make matters worse, Holland’s female deputy is making unmistakable moves on the aging law officer.All in all, it’s shaping up as a really bad week.We have come to expect finely crafted suspense tales from this award-winning author, and his latest work is no exception.Gritty, graphic and intense, Feast Day of Fools is a powerful, unforgettable tale of a man who, haunted by his late wife’s death, is unable to forge close relationships with the living.Burke expertly mines his own considerable knowledge of the American Southwest to create a stark backdrop for a chilling tale that will remain with readers long after they’ve finished this book.Val McDermid The Retribution Jacko Vance is a brutal psychopath who murdered seventeen girls and a police officer years earlier, and forensic profiler Dr.Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan helped put him in prison.Facing a lifetime behind bars with no chance of parole, Vance promised himself he would escape.Now he has made good on his word and is looking to take revenge on Hill and Jordan.Factor in the inevitable screw-ups, a crime reporter determined to get a scoop, and obstructive senior officers more interested in departmental budgets and image than keeping the streets safe, and you have a lethal mix.The Retribution is a superbly textured novel, as good or better than any crime thriller since Thomas Harris’s The Silence of the Lambs.An exquisite blend of pure thriller and an evocative tale of the nuanced relationship between Hill and Jordan, who cannot put to rest the differences -
