Townships week #1-___ggl IFBCOrfl Friday, March 14 2—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MARCH 14.1986 Brink’s highjacking inspires thriller By Victor Dabby MONTREAL (CP) — Yves Simo-neau was just an aspiring young film-maker visiting New York on a Quebec govern ment grant a couple of years ago when he heard about the spectacular hijacking of a Brink's armored truck in Montreal. The incident prompted him to begin writing his first feature-film script about how a well-planned armored truck heist went awry, or the story of ‘people trying to enter something that was impossible to penetrate.” While working in Montreal on film shorts, including one that won a Genie award, and on Coca-Cola commercials with Quebec stars Diane Dufresne and Carole Laure, Simoneau carefully researched the subject of his script."I watched the armored truck drivers whenever I could — on foot, in their trucks, making deliveries, picking up.but it’s hard to observe them for long periods because they are wary of being watched.” Simoneau even approached Brink's Canada to be allowed to spend two full days locked up in the back of an armored truck to give his script that realistic edge. But he was turned down.Despite that rebuff and others, he soldiered on and eventually ma naged to finish his script, put together a cast of actors and began shooting last year with a relative-ly-paltry budget of $1.7 million.TAKEN ABACK The result of all that effort, a crime thriller called Pouvoir intime, was released last weekend and the enthusiastic response by critics and audiences alike has taken Simoneau somewhat aback. He says he always had faith that Pouvoir intime — literally, intimate or personal power — would succeed, but not to this extent.“The distributor tells me they’re turning people away at the door of the theatre.” Only the latest Woody Allen hit.Hannah and Her Sisters, “was ahead of us in box-office receipts (in Montreal) — and then only by a few dollars,” Simoneau said in an interview less than a week after the film’s opening. The movie’s popularity is easy to understand: A psychological drama that has its audience sitting on edge, it never misses a beat with its fast-paced, unpredictable plot.Added to that is its stylish, cold-metal look, its driving soundtrack and strong cast. The high point is Robert Gravel’s performance as Martial, the guard who is trapped in the back of the hijacked armored truck, playing a deadly cat-and-mouse game with his captors.Having locked himself in, the guard can’t leave the bullet-poof truck and his captors can’t get in.SHOWS TENDERNESS Gravel’s tough-guy image is set off in earlier scenes by the tenderness he displays toward his homosexual lover, a blond young waiter (Jacques Lussier) who is eventually drawn into the botched robbery. With her clipped hair and boyish looks, actress Marie Tifo also delivers as Roxanne, the androgynous, street-wise girlfriend of gang member Gildor, played by Pierre Curzi, her real-life husband.Shot in Montreal over a 36-day period.Pouvoir intime is not a typically Québécois film.Unlike other major films recently released here, it does not deal with the Quebec identity (such as Le Matou, based on Yves Beauche-min’s best-seller) or a woman's search for herself (Lea Pool's Anne Trister). In fact, the 30-year-old Simoneau sees himself as part of a new wave of Quebec film-makers who want to entertain and engage their audiences, rather than pass on a political or social message.Subject of watermarks need reviewing I was talking stamps with a young fellow recently when the subject of watermarks came up.He was explaining to me how he had bought some watermark detector fluid and found that he still could not find or detect watermarks.Through conversation I found out he wasn't using a vateriTiark detector tray.In fact, he hadn't even heard of one before.I was absolutely flabbergasted, seeing that his father is a dealer, if only on a small scale. This made me wonder just how many stamp collectors are not aware of watermarks and their method of detection. It's very difficult to call yourself a stamp col-lector without knowing something about the subject.I don’t mean this in a derogatory way.I have done columns in the past about both, watermarks and, required tools. However, without getting to technical, 1 do feel the subject needs reviewing, especially for young people and beginners. To begin with, a watermark is a specific design impressed into the paper prior to the printing of postage stamps. These designs are registered and are illustrated in all philatelic catalogues concerned. Many countries have their own individual designs which are illustrated with the stamps of that particular country.COMMON DESIGN Most of the countries within the British Commonwealth, (Scott Vol.1) use a common design watermark. These designs can be found illustrated at the back of Stamp corner By Peter McCarthy the catalogue following the addendum. The watermark design will be listed before a series of stamps either by number of description and common design number. As an example, we’ll use Hong Kong, the 1904-11 King Edward VII issue, Wmkd.Multiple Crown and C.A.(3).The number in parenthesis is the number of the watermark design illustrated at the back of the catalogue. Two very simple articles are needed to assist you in detecting watermarks. The first of these is a watermark detector tray. This is a small black plastic or black glass tray which can be found in most stamp or philatelic supply outlets. The cost is as low as a dollar fifty. If you don’t foresee going to a stamp store for a while, a piece of black art paper will do in the mean time.Secondly, you will need watermark detector fluid or lighter fluid.Neither will do harm to your stamps, mint or used. The detection of a watermark is done by placing a stamp face down in the tray and applying a few drops of fluid to the stamp. The watermark, if there is one, will in most cases show up immediately.I say in most cases because you will find on occasion some difficulty in bringing out the watermark on certain stamps. The watermarks on mint stamps can usually be identified without using the detector.CATALOGUE STAMP Once you have detected and identified the watermark, catalogue the stamp by putting the number of the back with a lead pencil or by putting the stamp in glassine envelopes with the number on the glassine.By using this column and your catalogue as guides, you shouldn’t ha ve any problem in detecting and identifying watermarks. However, if it’s still not clear to you, or if you have any further questions, by all means write.I’ll be more than happy to help in any way I can.More on Phila-Sherbrooke’s stamp exhibition on April 27th.Mr.Paul Thibodeau, president of Phila-Sherbrooke, will be contacting all stamp clubs including schools with known stamp clubs in the area, in order to invite them to participate in this very fine exhibition. If your school has a stamp club and you harve not as yet been contacted, and wish to participate, please phone Mr.Thibodeau at 1-819-566-2271 or write to me at P.O.Box 688, Richmond, Que., JOB 2H0.In order to be able to participate, please either contact either of the above immediately.Image of Italian wine is often off the mark When North Americans generally think of Italian wine the image that pops up is usually one of dry, fruity whites and rather heavier, full-bodied reds.In reality, as many of us have come to know over the last few years, many of Italy’s red wines are in fact light and fruity — witness Bardolino, Valpolicella and Lambrusco.Others, particularly Chianti, Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino, when properly aged have a finesse and intricacy seldom thought of as “Italian”.With the white wines of Italy the general conception is perhaps closer to the truth.Even here however, there are several notable exceptions.Asti Spumanti with its natural sweetness and the fortified Marsala are both wines of considerable character that bear no resemblance to the white table wines which are now so common in Canada. One table wine that can also be considered somewhat of an exception is the Colli del Trasimeno of Umbria.A neighbour of the more popular Orvieto, Colli del Trasimeno is a relative newcomer to the export trade. One of the first things I noticed when I tasted the 1983 version recently, apart from the pale yellow color, was the exceptional “legs” (the drips that cling to the glass indicating the level of viscosity). Also evident was a strong, almost perfumy bouquet that was distinctive yet not unpleasant. As far as the taste was concerned, the wine was exceptionally full-bodied for a white with a little ‘too much in the mouth’ to be used as an aperitif. As a wine to ac- Wine Bits By TIMOTHY BELFORD company food however, it later proved to be quite acceptable. With its extra body.Colli del Trasimeno is a wine that can stand up to reasonably spicey chicken dishes or highly flavored sea food with no trouble. It is interesting to note that this particular version was produced by the Lamborghini firm owned and operated by the same gentleman of automobile fame.At $7.50 per bottle, Colli del Trasimeno is slightly more expensive than many other Italian whites, but the experience is worth it.Cheers ! LOS ANGELES (AP) - With a-one and a-two, the polka has beer-barrelled its way out of the ethnic enclaves in which it spent the last 50 years and is heading for the big time. Not all the beautiful people are bouncing to the beat that put Poland on the map.But singer David Byrne of the rock group Talking Heads was spotted in the audience at a packed polka show in Hollywood last month, and a San Francisco band that was started as a joke is all the rage in the city by the bay.The energetic ethnic two-step is even drawing the interest of those in the know.On Feb.25, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences presented a Grammy award for the first time to the best polka album of the year.It went to polka veteran Frankie Yankovic for his 70 Years of Hits.Polka had its origins as a village folk dance in Bohemia, now an area of Czechoslovakia. In the 1800s, it suddenly became internationally fashionable.Gutsy polka all the rage in San Francisco The dance waltzed its way to America with waves of immigrants from Central Europe, and as they melted in the pot, polka evaporated, except for weddings and parties in areas with strong ties to the old country. But these days, a band called Polkacide is one of the hottest night club acts in northern California, even though it was started as a joke by a group of San Francisco Art Institute students.‘GUTSY MUSIC’ “It’s happy, gutsy music.Even in the traditional bands, people dress crazy and really, let loose,” said Ward Abronski, saxophonist and leader of the year-old Polkacide. On stage, the lively 15-member group wears lederhosen, Naugaho-sen, mismatched plaid suits and hospital gowns.“We do Czech and Polish rathçr than German polkas.Standards such as: Beer Barrel Polka, Who Stole the Keeshka?and In Heaven There Is No Beer,” said Abronski, the only Pole in the bunch. TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MARCH 14.1986—3' Bishop’s University Drama presents.‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ By Laurel Shelter LENNOXVTLLE — It may not be quite as Shakespeare envisioned it, but the Bishop’s University Drama Department is planning to make A Midsummer Night’s Dream come to life in a whole new way next week.By giving it a contemporary setting, explains director Greg Tuck, they have made this play, written in 1596, into something everyone will be able to understand.“You’ll see people you know in this,” he said.“The characters in it we can relate to in a contemporary way and we’ve set it in a contemporary setting, kind of like Cape Cod or even North Hatley, where the rich people spend their summers.” The story goes like this: Theseus, Duke of Athens, is planning to marry Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. To celebrate their impending marriage, a group of Athenians are preparing to perform the play Pyramus and Thisbe in a wood near Athens.Meanwhile, two young lovers, Lysander and Hermia appear, having run away because Hermia’s father wants her to marry Demetrius.Demetrius pursues her, and is in turn pursued by Helena, who’s in love with him.MAGIC JUICE Complications arise when Obe-ron and Titania, King and Queen of the fairies, get careless with some magic juice, which, when squeezed into the eyes, causes the victim to fall in love with the first person he or she sees.Naturally everyone ends up in love with the wrong person, and so on.Tuck says he chose this play because it’s a good introduction to Shakespeare for the students. It’s also one of his favorites.“It has a really equal distribution of parts, so there’s a lot for everybody to do,” he said. The subject matter — love, or more specifically adolescent love — is also something the students can understand.Although the names and the language will remain as Shakespeare intended, the performance of the lines will be as conversational as possible, Tuck said.“My proposition here is that Shakespeare is just like ordinary speech, but he’s better,” he said.No special knowledge of Shakespearean language or lore is necessary.“They’ll understand it from start to finish.” X NOT REALISTIC Understandable, maybe, but ?that doesn’t necessarily mean rea- 3 listic.| “It’s a dream play, a lot of it,” = said Tuck.“The logic is not the lo- 5 gic of realism.A man gets changed 5 into an ass and there are fairies, and so on.” The whole production involves about 45 people, mostly second-and third-year students, with some help from first year students and others.Tuck is assisted in his job as director, by students Chris McGregor and Judie Ellis.A fairly simple, but powerful set has been designed by design instructor Peter McHugh. It consists mainly of scaffolding, some ethereal looking trees and a canvas z painted like the sky in the back-h ground.Lighting, designed by Mi-g chael Medland, promises to do g some magic with the night scenes | in particular.Set changes and g props are kept to a minimum, to 8 allow room for imagination.£ SUGGEST LOCALES “We try to suggest locales with You'll see someone you know in this play,” says director Greg Tuck.FIRST AID TIP from a circular thrust that ex- tends the stage toward the audience. The production has been put together in the space of six weeks, which has been “a huge organizational test”, said Tuck. They worked on it for three hours every night, until last week when the students voluntarily gave up their March break to work on the play for eight or nine hours a day.Performances are next Thursday, Friday and provides insight into art of homebuilding Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY House by Tracy Kidder • HOUGHTON MIFFLIN-THOMAS ALLEN & SON LTD ): $25.95, 341 pp.In 1982 Tracy Kidder won the Pulitzer Prize for his perceptive anatomy of the new technology of the computer in his book The Soul of a New Machine.Kidder took the average computer-illiterate into the intricacies of hi-tech gadgetry with the common-sense approach of a master of prose, making the journey into the soul of the computer a thing of easy comprehension, readily accessible to all readers. Now, with House, Kidder brings his non-fictional approach to a subject that would appear at first sight to be unlikely to captivate any but the most technically-minded of readers. It is measure of Kidder’s talent as a writer to state that this book about the raising of a new house in western Massachusetts is as readable as any bestselling novel. When Jonathan and Judith Sou-weine of Pelham, Mass., decide to employ an old friend named Bill Rawn as the architect to design their dream home, they have no idea of the complications that will ensue due to Bill’s wish to create a house in the Greek Revival mode, which will be located in the nearby town of Amherst.Tracy Kidder’s book is a fascinating study of every aspect of the business and art of raising a new home, from the hiring of a local team of young builders, (known as Apple Corps., because of their location in the Apple Valley, snuggled close by the Connecticut River Valley), to the tradition involved with dedicating houses (burying certain odd objects on the premises, or tacking on a tree bough to the ridge of newly framed roofs).Actually, the quartet of craftsmen, led by Jim Locke, the most vocal of the Apple Corps, builders, plays a large role in the book, with Kidder detailing the long summer of labour that went into the Sou-weine house between May and September of 1983.House is far more than the study of how the house was constructed, although the foundation, framing, roofing, interior partitions, flooring, fine finishing, and all aspects of building and trim I LIKE THIS BENNY FRBEDMAN.SGR-ÛUY.«ARO-GUV HAIHB^pSE HIS LIFE THAN HUMOR — G«OORYM^ftMl»D.AUTHOR OF FLETCH THE MOVING FINGER MILTON BASS are dealt with in the book. What makes House a book to remember is the lore that Kidder jams into the narrative: everything from the history and horticulture of the Connecticut River Valley and the bordering hill country of Western Massachusetts, to the traditions of American architecture and building, the anatomy of the wood business from its standing in wild Maine wooded forests to its being planed in the local woodmill, and the vocational backgrounds about all of the principals in the piece — Bill Rawn, Jonathan and Judith Souweine, Jim Locke & his three cohorts in construction, and even Judith’s parents, whose house is located quite close to the new site in Amherst. The disputes over building materials, contractual agreements, oversights and personality flare-ups, and the tensions that accrue to those who enter the sacred domain of carpenters are all included in House, with no attempt to make the raising of the Souweine home some kind of fairy-tale undertaking. The reader of Tracy Kidder’s House feels at the end of it that he has been given considerable insight into the art of home-building, but also that the lives of the creators and buyers of the home are equally revealed thanks to the style of this unorthodox, complex book. The Moving Finger by Milton Bass (SIGNET BOOKS): $4.50, 255 pp.A new detective figure bursts onto the scene in typically Californian fashion, in this violent shoot-em-up narrated by the San Diego sergeant Benny Freedman. He is on the rebound from his wife’s having just died of cancer, and an unknown bequest of six and a half million dollars does little to salve his terrible wound over her untimely death. In order to keep his mind occupied.Benny is put on a case of a Vietnamese car dealer who was found garrotted with a commando-style wire, lying dead in the front seat of one his autos, with his right index finger sliced off and deposited in a sandwich bag beside the corpse. In the course of investigating this gruesome crime, Benny’s memory of his wife is slightly salved by the generous favors of Madame Dienben, buxom wife of the slain auto entre-peneur, who decides that each of them deserves some release from their misfortunes.Benny’s wryly-observed, cynical narration is given lots to react to when his tracer questioning leads him into the midst of a group of certifiable crazies masquerading under the tax-free guise of being one of the thousands of el freeko churches in the state known as “Disneyland of the West”.The Church of the Holy Avenger is one of those Charles Manson-like congregations led by a maniacal reverend who manages to hold off Benny and most of the San Diego police force in the rather farfetched ending to this detective thriller. The Moving Finger is strong on the witty voice of detective Benny Freedman, but extremely weak on the believability factor, with most of the rather gratuitous violence of the book leaving the reader having to make a lot of concessions to the writer’s poetic licence. With California the wild and crazy place that it is, and writers such as Milton Bass able to parlay a new figure like Benny Freedman into a crime stopper series, there will no doubt be many further adventures of the quick-quipping, poetry-reading copper from San Diego.RECORD REVIEWS The Everly Brothers BORN YES-TERDAY (MERCURY-POLYGRAM) With their third album since their decision to patch up the acrimonious feud that kept their duets from being heard for better than ten long years, Don & Phil, the legendary Everly Brothers seem firmly committed to helping us forget the loss that the decade took out of the fabric of pop music.Teamed with their adoring producer, Dave Edmunds, the boys from Brownie, Kentucky have slipped back into a studio in England — Maison Rouge in London — and wisely recruited the very same quintet of musicians who toured with the Everlys on their triumphant July to September of ’85 North American jaunt, which included a spontaneous and triumphant gig at Ottawa’s grand National Arts Centre last July 31st.The ubiquitous, spirited stage-dynamo and piano wizard Pete Wingfield is at the keyboards again, with diminutive but inspired Albert Lee trading guitar licks with Phil Donnelly, while Phil Cranham and Larrie Londin evoke the memories of countless sessions as Motown regulars, rounding out the tight, talented band that works wonders on the concert stage. But all of the excitement about Don & Phil would only be nostalgia speaking fondly of what once was, were it not for the fact that the last two Everly albums —- EB 84 & the current BORN YESTERDAY — sit right up and demand close attention, thanks to a wonderful blend of country pop, rock ‘n’ roll and some rechanneled tunes, such as Bobbie Dylan’s “Abandoned Love”, which sounds like an Everlys natural, the Sutherland Brothers’ tune “Arms Of Mary”, and the harmonic epicentre of this warm, smooth album, a note-perfect rendering of Mark Knopfler’s “Why Worry”.The latter track was incorporated into the tour last July, prefaced by the intro, “from our next album”, and sure enough, true to Don’s promise, here is the magnificent vocal showpiece of Everly Brothers’ harmonics wedded to a song from one of our finest contem- porary writers, the head honcho of Dire Straits. To say that this song sounds as if it were written especially for Don & Phil is really just to say that the twin voices of these Kentuckians are such an integral part of the rock story that everyone from John & Paul, doing their old Quarrymen covers, to Knopfler’s subconscious debt to the duet, can hear the plaintive strains of “All I Have To Do Is Dream” or “Bye Bye Love” echoing through the ages.Of the rest of the tracks on this super record much might be said, but let it be recorded that the title track, one of Don’s infrequent, but all the more valuable pennings, is a little gem of Everly styling, with a haunting chorus that stays with the listener long after the needle leaves this record. In addition to the medium-rocking blends of songs there are a couple of bona fide rockers here, such as the belting opener, “Amanda Ruth”, a rousing cover of a Rank & File song ; and one of those classic tunes about rock ‘n’ roll, youth and dreams of the future, “Always Drive A Cadillac” which will get lots of cover action. The artist bio with the record BORN YESTERDAY also documents the info that Don & Phil were to include a dynamite cover of the Sam Cooke song “You Send Me”, but it didn’t make it onto this disc, and we can only hope that it’s slated for single release real soon.Like this album, it should be further proof that Don Everly is absolutely right when he said : “Singers don’t really hit their stride until they’re 40 anyway.Experience and reflection are important-.that’s something that youth really doesn’t really have”.With BORN YESTERDAY, the Everly Brothers are surely hitting their slide, and getting them back with this kind of output is the stuff rock ‘n’ roll dreams are made of.VIDEO SCREENINGS THE RIVER (MCA-UNIVERSAL) Against the setting of raging rivers and ravaged croplands, the tragedy of American farms not able to meet their financial obligations is dramatized in this movie which stars two of the hotter properties in contemporary film.Mel Gibson and Cissy Spacek play the husband wife team of beleaguered homesteaders who are up against a flooded bottomland and a grasping, relentless corporation that wants to evict or wait out the scrabbling dirt farmers.THE RIVER is a contemporary version of the Big Mean Cattle Barons trying to bully the poor little sharecroppers — a familiar image in American film history.Director Mark Rydell resorts to a great many dramatic shots that make this film into as much a visual message as a thematic one.The larger issues of the movie are placed in very clear opposition, when farmer Mel Gibson leaves the spread to his wife and joins a group of men working as scabs in a steel forge. This rather blatant symbolism, that the true vocation of the American male is on the land and not at the mercy of mercenary profiteers grinding out business gains on the backs of the wretched proletariat might have got THE RIVER branded as a commie-pinko flick in earlier decades of American film-making.The poignant scenes of Cissy Spacek working on a corn field, as the camera pans in on her over a foreground of gravestones, gives some idea of the kind of juxtaposition of screen images that are at work in THE RIVER.Although it was not the commercial success that seemed to be fore-ordained by using the steamy Gibson and the believable Spacek, who warmed up for this role really, in COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER, THE RIVER is a fair example of Hollywood’s search for something to replace the “duster” in the hearts of American filmwatchers.PERFECT (COLUMBIA) Based on a number of magazine articles that he has written for Rolling Stone magazine, PERFECT turns Aaron Latham’s slick journalism about Los Angeles’s fixation on bodies, drugs and computers into a glossy little film that is probably more satiric than its producer/director James Bridges meant it to be.John Travolta plays the character based on Latham, here named Adam Lawrence, who sets out to do a revealing piece on a Vic Tanney type of emporum named “The Sports Connection” — the up-scale, L.A.meet-market style of gymnasium which has supposedly replaced the singles’ bar as a locale for checking out the other sex. When Travolta encounters the shapely Jamie Lee Curtis, recognized in the gym as the “Aerobics Pied Piper”, the plot bends, twists, stretches and strains to encompass their blossoming love affair, and the film becomes like a rock video, sprinkled liberally with orgiastic aerobic workouts with Curtis and Travolta attempting to dislocate their pelvic assemblies.Along the way the ethics of the new journalism and of the reveal-all glossies like The Stone come in for a fair share of scrutiny, and as Curtis observes: “It must be fun being a reporter these days.well, you get to try to keep the big boys honest and at the same time you get to have fun tryin’ to figure out which way the culture is going to go”.The acting of the principals is just what you might expect, with Travolta seeming to be speaking through gauze as he limps through his lines, and Curtis providing mere eye relief. Some of the scenes implying high drama are as pumped up as the bodies in this flick, but then this movie obviously had no pretensions to becoming a major feature, the presence of Travolta dooming it from the start. But it does have its moments of revelation about the glitter set and it is almost stolen by Laraine Newman, playing a sleezy “Sports TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY.MARCH 14.1986-5 Champion oarsmen compete on Lake Memphremagog •'1; "ïsîwb* M wmm Photo: Lake Memphremagog Historical Society archives, reproduction by Renaud Thomas.A photo taken at Georgeville around 1880 shows the Camperdown Hotel and in front the type of scull used hy the “Oarsmen".In July 1935, Frank Burns of Newport was drowned while returning from a regatta at Magog. In 1903 the Memphremagog Canoe Club held its first regatta at the residence of General Butterfield known as kittemaug. The Stanstead Journal reported at the time that over 2,000 people attended the regatta.Even before this, the same newspaper carried an article on the 30th of July 1890, about an event that took place at the opening of the Lake Park Boat and Canoe Club. The article stated that about 600 people came to watch rowing and sail boat races.Apart from all this, we should not forget what was possibly the largest boating event ever held on Lake Memphremagog. This was to take place at Newport on June 19, 1886.The contestants were world class, and the events drew a crowd of nearly 8,000.The newspaper The Express & Standard published the following item in its issue of May 4, 1886: “Arrangements have been made to hold a boat race on Lake Memphremagog on the 19th of June, between the celebrated oarsmen Wallace Ross and John Teamer”.The event was apparently organized by the railroad companies. For some ten years, Newport had been connected by rail with Montreal and Quebec City, as well as several major cities in the United States.Newport had become a centre where several different rail lines met and numerous hotels made it a strategic location. The same newspaper published a long article on the first of June, 1886 entitled: “The Oarsmen”.It stated that Teamer was born at Makeesport, Pennsylvania, was 23 years old, and had defeated the Entertainment shorts NASHVILLE.Tenn.(AP) — Mel Tillis, Charlie Daniels.Grandpa Jones and Alabama's Randy Owens were among the country music entertainers who traded their instruments for aprons to raise money for an organization that helps fulfil the dreams of children with deadly diseases.“It went great,” said George Schnitzer, who helped organize the third annual fund-raising luncheon Tuesday for DreamMakers.“We don’t have final figures, but it’s at least $42,000.” The luncheon features celebrity waiters, who donate their tips to DreamMakers. The group, founded in 1982.honored singer Sylvia for her involvement in its efforts.MEXICO CITY (AP) — Opera tenor Placido Domingo plans to donate $800.000 to victims of the earthquakes in September that killed as many as 7,000 people in Mexico City, including four of his relatives. He says collections will top $1 million in coming months.Bubbles By JACQUES BOISVERT of the Société Historique du Lac Memohrémagog Inc.best oarsmen in the West. They listed various events he had won, the many records he held, and the amounts of money he had won.On two different occasions he had won as much as $2,000.He even bet $5,000.that he could beat world champion William Beech of Australia.History does not say whether Beech ever took up the bet.Ross came originally from New Brunswick. He was 29 years of age, measured 6 ft.2 in.in height and weighed 180 lbs.He was considered the biggest oarsman of his time.Racing sculls with specially-designed oars were to be used for the event.Ross had won hundreds of races.Probably the most important one was held in 1878 on the Sekonk River near Providence, Rhode Island, for the Hop Bitters cup with a purse of $5,000.He was certain he would win the Memphremagog gvent as the distance was to be only three miles, one-and-a-half miles each way. Finally, the June 19 arrived. The main event of the meet was to be the famous race between Ross and Teamer for a purse of $800.Teamer won the race by only a few feet.A lot of people not happy with the result said Ross could have won easily if he had wanted to.There were a lot of other activities at the regatta ; such as canoe races, skiffs with two oarsmen, sail-boats etc.Sherriff Miles was appointed Chief of Police for the occasion. It was the first time in the history of Newport that the town was ever invaded by so many people. There were quite a number of gamblers in the crowd and the police were really kept busy.Apparently, only two of the gamblers were arrested. They were caught running a crap game in one of the boat-houses.It was a real set-up for gamblers, and pickpockets had a field day.It was ended by saying that at the next regatta, the police should be more vigilant; and that people should leave their money at home. This lake we love so much really had some glorious days! June 19,1886 was one of these.Reading about events such as this brings back fond memories of the good old days.G a VISA GENERAL the laughter, the triends, the talk, the hurt, the passion, the pressure.the real world.A JOHN HUGHES PRODUCTION mm m mm PARAMOUNT PICTURES PRESENTS MOLLY RINGWALD HARRY DEAN STANTON "PRETTY IN PINK” JON CRYER ANNIE POTTS JAMES SPADER AND ANDREW MCCARTHY EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS JOHN HUGHES AND MICHAEL CHINICH WRITTEN BY JOHN HUGHES PRODUCED BY LAUREN SHULER DIRECTED BY HOWARD DEUTCH A PARAMOUNT PICTURE Cinémas CARREFOUR Sherbrooke 565-0366 Pretty in.: Evenings: 7:30 - 9:15.Sunday: 1:30 -3:30 - 5:30 - 7:30 • 9:15.“VERY AMUSING” — loc Siegel, Good Morning America Vi ¦“f INS i INOICAIIf I " - « jfcjL.i if ft DOLBY STEREO NICK NOUE • BETTE MIDLER • RICHARD DREYE16S AND WILL RICHARD lOUQiaat HUA5 ««A r ^ BIMR BCRffN RARINtlG II A N» MAZURacr fH/A BwiKKNOUf MIIfMIDUR RKHARD DRfYFIK) •DCtMt AND Otn « BfVtRLY HIU5‘CoTW«ed by IAO 5UZMAN Ba«d ^ i).’OJDU BALM Dt5 LAUX-by RLNf W)CH06 BoeerçJayby BLU MAZURSKY Ô UON CAPflANOB ftodmed are) Dotted by nVlMAZUÔKY Cinémas CARREFOUR Sherbrooke 565-0366 Down in.: Evenings: 7:00 - 9:00.Sunday: 100 -3:00 - 5:00 - 7:00 - 9:00.382258 6—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1986 Hardly-necessary frills, like health care, pensions.I guess it’s time somebody explained the budget and since neither Michael ‘Buddy-can-you-spare-a-dime' Wilson nor his boss, Brian ‘On-the-road-again’ Mel-lowruoney seem capable of the job, I best take a shot at it.First, you all have to realize the country is broke. Not just short of cash, but down and out, sans un sous, stoney broke.Just like the Sunday morning after a Friday payday having spent the night before trying to beat the poker machine at the Georgian.Get the picture? Now the reason the country is broke is because all of us, since the Second World War, have insisted the government supply us with a whole lot of hardly-necessary frills. And all these extras, like adequate health care, old age pensions, welfare etc.cost money. Some of you I know have fallen into the trap of thinking that the real reason we’re short of cash is probably government waste — too many civil servants, high government salaries, limousines, abuse of travel grants, subsidized meals in the parliamentary cafeteria and the purchase of Crown Corporations whose primary function seems to have been losing money. Not true. The error in your thinking stems from your confusion between "so- Who’s who By TADEUSZ LETARTE cialism”, which is bad, and "business incentives” which are good."Socialism”, you see, is an insidious Communist, Marxist, pinko plot which uses tax payers' money to undermine the moral fiber of the freedom-loving west by making everyone dependent on health care and adequate housing. On the other hand, “corporate incentives” is the proper use of tax payers money to insure that the banks, oil companies, insurances firms etc.continue to make adequate profits to guarantee what economists call the "trickle down effect”.The trickle down effect of course is good since it allows for the wealth of the nation — controlled by those at the top — to trickle down to those at the bottom, sort of like a leak in a pot of maple syrup.Anyway, the Regressive Preservatives — who use the trickle down effect in their caucus, the brainy ones being at the top — noticed that the country was broke just as soon as they took power. They also noticed that this was all the fault of Liberal leader John Turner who was the finance minister just shor- Gagnon working on all-English show for tour MONTREAL (CPI — It seemed so easy, looking back four months, for André-Philippe Gagnon to go onto the Tonight Show, amaze Johnny Carson with his 20-voice takeoff of We Are The World and come home a star. But now the boyish Gagnon really has his work cut out for him — seven weeks of fast-paced live shows in Montreal, spread over three months, with visits to Ottawa and smaller Quebec centres in between. On top of that, the 25-year-old impressionist is developing an all-English show to cross Canada and the United States this summer — incorporating uncanny singing impressions of Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Corey Hart, Bryan Adams, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and more.“We started work on an all-English show this week,” said manager Pierre Gravel as admiring fans mobbed a wine-sipping Gagnon for autographs backstage at Place des Arts.“It will be a lot different, because American humor and French Québécois humor isn’t the same thing at all.” Indeed, if anyone didn’t know their way around Quebec pop culture, they would have missed the essence of the French show when it debuted here Wednesday night.(It previewed last week in Quebec City, his hometown.) FAST-MOVING SHOW It was a fast-clipped, two-hour production, backed by a rocking four-piece band and a futuristic set that validated the handbill’s description of Gagnon as "the hero of the techno-laugh generation.” One of the best skits was a mock telethon, "hosted” by an impersonation of top Quebec TV personality Pierre Lalonde, that raised $5 for common cold research.Another was an all-English take-off on the Tonight Show — a favorite show among Quebec insomniacs — enhanced with cheeky subtitles in "jouai," the colloquial French spoken in rural Quebec.Equally impressive was Gagnon literally skating across the stage in full New York Islanders regalia, mimicking Mike Bossy as a jock whose IQ is nowhere near his scoring total. On the other hand, a “walk-on” by a booming Brian Mulroney, while facially accurate, seemed to fall flat on the 1,300 patrons in the audience. And Gagnon's encore rendition of We Are The World — the number that first got him serious show-biz attention last summer at a Montreal comedy festival, then delighted Carson on network U.S.television in November — felt slightly overdone. The one impression that got the most spontaneous audience reaction wasn’t of a voice at all.It was Gagnon’s amazing imitation of the saxophone riff from Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther theme — one of the earliest impressions in his repertoire.tly after Confederation.Putting two and two together they decided to do exactly the opposite of Turner except for the “corporate incen- tives” part which I have already explained is a good thing. Therefore, Wilson, Mulroney and the gang increased taxes or to put it a little more clearly, they have taken some of the syrup that trickled down away from you and me and are putting it back in the top of the bucket so there will be more to trickle down.Got it?Thus the key to the whole pro- blem is patience. As Wilson has tried to explain to those thickheaded NDPers, he’s not really taking anything away he’s just insuring that the trickle will continue. Now for the good news, Quebec Premier ‘Boo Boo Bourassa' is about to bring down his party’s budget. How it will affect the trickle is anybody’s guess.Stay tuned.“An excellent and invaluable reference work for the Canadian art market.that should be part of every collector’s library.” Discover: Canadian Art Sales Index 1984-85 Over 3,500 current auction prices! • Results from 12 leading salerooms! • More than 1100 artists listed! that I’ve been a secretary in the City’s public relations department, I’ve come to realize how important the work city employees do is to Sherbrookers. We sincerely see ourselves as promoters, striving to give out accurate information and to develop the region’s tourist appeal.Sherbrooke residents make their contribution by supporting, in various ways, the efforts put forth by the City and its employees.Through the warm welcome extended to our visitors and growing participation in a variety of activities, each of us does our part in making Sherbrooke more than a city.y — Louise Mercure
