country’s struggle for independence from Pakistan 3l2 years ago, was killed early today in a military coup.Radio Bangladesh announced The radio said Sheik Mujib had been replaced by a former close associate.Khondakar Mushtaque Ahmed, and that a 24-hour curfew had been imposed An army officer identified as Major Dalim called in the broadcast for all citizens to “remain calm and stay at home.” Diplomatic reports reaching New Delhi said that Prime Minister Mansoor All and two of Sheik Mujib’s nephews also had been killed in the coup The reports said the coup leaders had renamed the country the “Islamic Republic of Bangladesh" instead of the “People’s Republic of Bangladesh,” indicating the new government planned to stress Islamic policies rather than Sheik Mujib’s socialist line About 90 per cent of Bangladesh s estimated 77 million people are Moslems The coup followed grow ing dissatisfaction with Sheik Mujib’s failure to come up with solutions to the country’s staggering economic problems LASTED TWO HOI RS The diplomatic reports said the coup was staged at 5:15 a m.(7:15 p m Thursday EDT) and there had been sporadic fighting in the early stages around Dacca, the capital However, two hours later everything was generally quiet, the reports said These reports were backed up by the United News of India news agency, which reported from Dacca that everything was calm in conflicts—the strike at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft of Canada Ltd .now in its 20th month The premier, picking up where former labor minister Jean Cournoyer left off.is meeting this week with both union and company officials to find common ground for an orderly return to work by the almost 800 strikers The contentious return-to work question remains the last to be settled in the violence plagued strike However, the company and union remain poles apart on the issue The 782 strikers are the last of a contingent of 2.600 workers who originally walked off the job Jan 7.1974.in support of wage increases and a mandatory checkoff of union dues As their numbers gradually dwindled with time, their strike became a rallying point for the province’s militant trade union movement, which called for nationalization of the American-owned firm manufacturing airplane engines and components H’Ot I D 1 \KI B \( K SOME In its latest offer to the strikers, members of the United Auto Workers, the company said it would take back 504 of the workers following the signing of a contract and the rest would be taken back within a year The union wants an immediate rehiring of all strikers wishing to return to work Meanwhile.Pratt and Whitney, formerly known as United Aircraft of Canada, has been operating its four plants near Montreal with non-union workers —a situation which has caused several violent Multimillionaire Edgar Bronfman says he has complied with all demands of his son’s kidnappers and is begging for a sign that Samuel Bronfman II is alive and well Saying his 21-year-old son’s abductors “have failed to follow through,” Bronfman noted that “time is going by” and pleaded with the kidnappers to renew contact through an agreed-upon secret telephone number. The concern with fleeting time referred to a warning from the kidnappers that a record $4.5-mil lion ransom would have to be paid within 10 days for Samuel’s safe return. They said the victim was buried somewhere in Westchester County with only 10 days’ supply of water and air.The kidnappers failed to say when the 10 days began.but officials have assumed they meant 10 days from the day of the warning— Monday.Neither the family nor the FBI would say whether Bronfman, chairman of the Seagram’s Co Ltd of Montreal, world’s largest distillers, had delivered the $4 5 million to the kidnappers It was confirmed that a tape recording of Samuel’s voice and in structions from the abductors was received FRIEND MET REPORTERS Jonathan Rinehart, a public relations consultant and Bronfman family friend, broke a 2'-day family and official silence when he met reporters Thursday on the landscaped grounds of the 150-acre family estate here and read a handwritten statement. The statement said in part “We want to assure (the kidnappers) we intend to comply with instructions and we have done so.However, the abductors so far have failed to follow through We ask them now to renew their contacts by calling us at the number they originally in dicated.” Rinehart appeared tired and tense as he read the statement inside the gate to the estate where Bronfman last saw his son shortly before midnight last Friday Rinehart refused to an swer questions or say anything beyond the text of the statement The quickened pace of developments Wednesday night and increased traffic of helicopters and carloads of FBI agents in and out of the estate had raised hopes that the kidnap drama was nearing a climax, but Bronfman’s statement dashed that optimism Early today, the sixth day of Samuel’s disappearance, there was no report from the family, the FBI or other sources that contact had been renewed with the ab ductors.Samuel Bronfman, a June graduate of Williams College, was seized as he drove to his mother’s house late Friday in nearby Purchase, NY, following a late dinner with his father here At 1:45 a m.Saturday, he telephoned Bronfman to say three men had kidnapped him His car was found in his mother’s garage, the key in the ignition Samuel’s mother, the former Ann Margaret Loeb, is daughter of a partner of one of the world’s largest stock brokerages She and Bronfman were divorced in 1973 after 20 years of marriage Supports bilingual nature of Canada ANSE ST JEAN, Que (CP) — Intent on increasing its strength and freedom.Quebec will nevertheless continue to support the federal government’s “fun damental policy” of recognizing the bilingual nature of Canada.Solicitor General Fernand Lalonde of Quebec said Thursday Mr Lalonde made the remarks from the pulpit of a parish church to delegates attending the first-ever convention of French-speaking Canadians taking place in Chicoutimi.50 miles northwest of here About 1.000 convention delegates travelled from Chicoutimi to this com munity 110 miles northeast ot Quebec City to hear Mr lalonde unveil what had been billed as the general policy the Quebec govern ment intends to follow in dealing with French Canadian minorities outside the province “It is an undeniable fact that without Quebec, no F rench culture is possible in Canada,” he said A strong Quebec was essential to the survival and spread of French culture in the country and.to be strong.Quebec required “cultural sovereignty.” “The ultimate responsibility for the development of French language and culture in Quebec is one which Quebec cannot cede to ot hers QUEBEC DEC IDES The “vital minimum’’ re quired immediately is for Quebec to have the final say on language, immigration and communications policies affecting the province Support for F’rench-Canadian minorities of other provinces would come from the simple existence of a strong Quebec and, more directly, through inter provincial and federal provincial aid projects.Mr Lalonde said “You must approach your governments and submit your needs and projects to them.’’ he told the delegates “In that way, those of your requests which require the intervention of Quebec, whether through technical assistance, human resources, or exchanges of ideas, persons or cultural property, will follow the channel of intergovernmental co-operation, and we will be acting with absolute respect for the ju risdictions and policies of the interested parties.” Besides being solicitor-general.Mr Lalonde is also responsible for Quebec’s French Language Board whose task is to promote F'rench as the working language in the province’s business, industry and public administration ENDS TOD \Y Delegates from across the country are taking part in the four day convention, officially called the Biennale de la francophonie canadienne which ends today It was organized by the Association canadienne d education de langue française which hopes to stage a similar event every two years In 50 workshops and as many briefs, organizations of a religious, educational, cultural and trade unions nature have dwelled mostly on three basic problems: —The difficulties of devel oping basic cultural tools, such as F'rench language education and com munications in an over whelmingly Fmglish speak ing environment; —The everlasting fear of assimilation into the English speaking mainstream A synthesis of the briefs and workshop discussions is to be presented to the con vent ion today by associate secretaries Jean-Noel Tremblay, a former minister of cultural affairs in Quebec now studying for the priesthood and teaching at Laval University in Quebec City, and Gerard Raymond, an official of the Ontario department of education 2 — THE SHERBROOKE RECORD — FRI.AIGtST 15.1»75 ( business and finance Business Briefs Montreal Ontario government issued guides for the petrochemical industry last year to protect workers exposed to vinyl chloride gas used to make polyvinyl plastic Dr McKinley said traces of vinyl chloride have been found by his department in food packaged in polyvinyl but there is not enough information to set a maximum safe level for the chemical. He said directives were sent last May to industries using any object, including televisions, furniture.stereo equipment and outboard motors If any engraved object is stolen and later found, police can in 30 seconds retrieve the owner’s name and address from the Minister of Tran sport using the driver’s licence number. The engraved operation is handled by the police, who also provide decals for use at homes and cottages, reading “Operation Volcan — The objects of value in this property carry an engraved code permitting police to identify them — Quebec Police Force.” The engraving of valuable items has brought drastic reductions of the theft rate wherever it has been implemented In Ste.Julie, near Montreal, burglaries declines by 75 per cent since Operation Volcan was put into effect in March of last year In the United States, the same results have been seen in 150 communities where the identification system has been put to work For example, in Montery Park.California, since the program began, there has been only 25 burglaries at the 5000 homes that joined the program Meanwhile, there were 1000 break-ins at 6000 non-participating residences during the same period.Further information on Operation Volcan is available from both Quebec Police and local police forces The QPF is also demonstrating the method at Expo Sherbrooke FITCH BAY Mrs.Howard Webster 876-2984 Friends of this place were sorry to learn that Mr Mackey Chamberlin had Recreation Director and the Recreation Committee authorization to make any corrections to the schedule as required during the season. While councillors Roger Couture, Arthur Bibeau and Marcel Bisson approved the motions, Mayor Alphonse Godbout expressed dissent with the idea.He said that rather than a fixed, hourly price for use of the arena, a system considering the number of participants as
