She was a nice lady and used to bake me pumpkin pies every autumn.Canada Post has been reducing rural delivery to five days a week and citizens have protested. But unlike many people in the Eastern Townships, Ward says, “I think it’s a lovely idea to have no delivery on Saturdays.” During the winter months, he mostly reads and sleeps in the afternoons, but in the summer, he keeps busy outside gardening.Five days per week he starts sorting the mail at the Bury Post Office at 7:30 a.m.then starts his route around 8:30.Another Bury postman, Glen Olson, has had his route for 32 years. When asked if he plans to keep it for as long as his colleague has, he replied, “I have no intention of lasting 65 years!” Ward celebrated his 80th birthday at the Bury town hall with many old friends and relatives.A highlight of the party was a special birthday cake illustrating his route. For his 80th birthday and his 65 years’ service as mailman, he received letters from Prime Minister Trudeau, MP Claude Tessier and Canada Post’s cabinet minister André Ouel-let, among others. He also received a medal. But Ward is modest about his record number of years' service.“The 65 years have gone by just like that,” he says. His numerous admirers wish him many more.i3uick and Cheerful Service Carrossier N Desruisseaux enr.Germain Desruisseaux, prop.‘ Body Work —Painting— Welding / Consulta specialist 261 Queen St.— Tel.562-9743 ___________LENNOXVILLE, Que.
