Albums: Stringband’s ‘Live’is real art Country music By DAVE y/IULHOLLANP Live; Stringband; Nick Records; Nick fi Stringband plays fresh, innovative, spirited music that is distinctly their own I can’t imagine anyone not liking this band. The group’s four members are ably assisted by four guest musicians.Instrumentation includes guitar, banjo, concertina, autoharp, fiddle, mandolin, bodhran and electric bass.Numbers include vocals in both French and English, as well as instrumentals. The songs are serious, humorous, acerbic and always intelligent. The band sounds as if it really cares about the songs, so there’s no attempt to appeal to common denominator taste.I think this is what you call real art.You won”t hear this album on Canadian country radio, because it doesn't sound American.Such is life.In this country any What's Forever For; Cliff Edwards; Boot Records; BCS-7222.Cliff Edwards is a light-weight singer. His voice is mostly a throaty whisper. His writing is also light-weight, and he spends much of the song repeating the same sentiment. The title tune is exceptionally well-written by Rafe VanHoy, but it’s the song, not Edwards’ singing, that makes it appealing.Love Song for Annie is Edwards' composition for his wife.I sure hope there’s more passion in their marriage than there is in this song.Edwards doesn’t convey strong feelings his singing or writing. He may possess strong feelings, but they’re not on this album.Brother Jukebox; Don Everly; Vera Cruz Records; VCR-1013.This is an ordinary album. Not bad, but nothing to write home about Don Everly has a good but not particularly colorful voice. Not that there should be, but there’s no hint of the distinctive Everly Brothers’ sound. At least he's not trying to cash in on his laurels. The songs are about winning and losing at love, but Everly fails to expand senti ments that have been expressed thousands of times previously. The best cut on the album is the Fred Rose classic, Deep Water.Lettin’ Go also rises above the mediocrity of the other songs.Always; Patsy Cline; MCA Records; MCA-3263.As this album adequately demonstrates, integrity is not a prominent quality in the music business. This isn’t a Patsy Cline album. It’s an Owen Bradley album. He’s the producer. What Bradley has done is taken the vocal tracks of one of country music’s ij®Mj Music chart NO.TITLE ARTIST LAST 13,1981-3 Towner-Abercrombie in own world Last week in review BY DONNELLY Sherbrooke experienced something new a week ago when Ralph Towner and John Abercrombie gigged at the Cafe du Palais, but new is not necessarily better.Guitarists Towner and Abercrombie, both in their 40s, have spent most of their musical careers on the fringes of modern jazz or more specifically in free form jazz. Each has done extensive recording and touring, both solo and in co-operation with others.Towner is a member of the group, Oregon.Abercrombie has his own quartet. But they are primarily in demand as back up and session musicians. The list of their musical associations reads like a w ho’s who of contemporary jazz.Towner has played with the likes of Keith Jarrett.Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Dave Holland, the Brecker brothers, the original weather Report line-up, one of whom.Miroslav Vitous, will be familiar to those who caught his dates at the Vieille Cloche bar last year and the year before, and Gary Burton, who did a sensational show at La Poupee last spring.Towner's contribution to Weather Report’s “I Sing The Body Electric” first brought him wide recognition. He even worked with folk-singer-songwriter Tim Hardin, taking part in his "Bird On The Wire” album and appearing with him at Woodstock. For the past 10 years, Towner has been involved with the excellent jazz ensemble Oregon.A self-imposed year’s lull in the quartet’s live and recording dates has freed Towner up to tour with his good friend, Abercrombie.Abercrombie has recorded with jazz legends like Gil Evans, “Gato” Barbiéri and Miles Davis. He became a regular with Chico Hamilton's group and gained a reputation as the guitarist for Billy Cobham’s band, appearing on three of Cobham’s albums.Soon he was sharing the bill at large concert halls with such big-time rockers as the Doobie Brothers.“One night we appeared at the Spectrum in Philadelphia and I thought, what am I doing here?” He returned to the jazz fold and began a close association with drummer Jack DeJohnette (currently at Montreal’s Rising Sun jazz-blues club). Most recently, in addition to solo jaunts and duets with Towner, Abercrombie formed the Abercrombie Quartet.Their first album was released last April. Both Towner and Abercrombie are interested in improvisation. It means not only freedom from written form, but from melody, beat, even from the regimentation of jazz itself, anything, in fact, that might get in the way of self-expression, threaten the spark of inspiration.“For me this kind of development of improvisation is really valuable, and people shouldn’t worry their poor heads about whether it’s ‘jazz’ or not (it isn’t, of course),” says John Abercrombie (above) teamed up with Ralph Towner at the Café de Palais last week Ralph Towner.“I think it’s more important for me to not keep on demonstrating my jazz roots. It pisses me off when people get bugged because my music isn't something else.I think it’s almost my responsibility to develop what I do, rather than committing myself to proving that I can play jazz too.” This is just the impression one gets watching and listening to the two of them play.Although Cafe du Palais patrons last Thursday were squeezed as close as possible to the musicians, Towner and Abercrombie seemed almost oblivious to all but the music. They were playing for themselves and if the audience was listening, well, that was okay too. This attitude is particularly inappropriate when touring the hinterland where Moe Koffman is still considered a radical. With no introduction, the two waged into an improvisational warm-up which slipped, apparently by chance, into a piece written by Towner. But only the most sophisticated connoisseurs would have made that differentiation for themselves. The pair’s music provides each with an outlet for self-expression.Abercrombie climbed to high and blues reaches in his own piece, “Backward Glance”.The melodic breaks offered some swinging respite from heady meanderings that, while obviously not aimless, occasionally lost listeners. On Abercrombie’s “Paramour”, Towner’s acoustic guitar served up a bass-sounding background to the electric guitarist’s musical wanderings.See Towner, Page 6 CMRUOURde LISTRIt Boulevard Portland SHERBROOKE Tel 565 0366 m 'll -Vo CINEMA 2 W-0—7:05-9:00 W-E—1:45-3:35-5:30-7:20-9:15 FEBRUARY 13,1981 Kaleidoscope Quebec By RICHARD LONEY "The Last Good Kiss” by James Crumley (POCKET): $2.95, 292 pp.There have not been many detective novels which provide the kind of fun with language and descriptions that James Crumley’s thriller does.Raymond Chandler’s fascinating chronicles of California in the thirties come readily to mind when Crumley’s panorama of unforgettable characters is unfolded in "The Last Good Kiss”.Private investigator C.W.Sughrue is cut from the same bolt of cloth that supplied Philip Marlowe, Mike Hammer, Sam Spade, and other unorthodox anti-heroes who probed the criminal underworld.Sughrue is as ornery, unpredictable and bizarre as they come, as he patrols the roadside gin-joints of Montana, Colorado and California.Sughrue, a rather seedy, decidedly too boozy, private eye, works out of an office in Meriwether, Montana, and is accustomed to tailing alimony-skippers or finance company refugees, but in this hilarious yarn he’s tracking down an alcoholic poet. What begins as a chase from bar to bar across the West to locate Abraham Trahearne for his wife, ends in a sordid grapple with Denver mobsters and an attempt to find the daughter of a barmaid, who’s been missing for 10 years.Along the way, Sughrue’s sparklingly witty first-person narration is our ticket into some of the wreirdest company to be found in any detective novel. It’s as if Crumley is striking out against the constraining limits of the average private eye novel, using language in the refreshing manner of some contemporary novelists such as Tom Robbins, or Thomas McGuane, and capturing the exact dialects and speech patterns of California Okies, or rural American toughs in delightful ways. But while the general tone of Crumley’s novel is comic, some of the confrontations that C.W.has with the bad guys reveal all of the pent-up hostility of this ex-Viet Nam soldier.Sughrue draws us into this episodic, sprawling narrative with his easy, chatty style, making "The Last Good Kiss" one of those yarns that is very hard to put down.Off the record Styx PARADISE THEATRE (A&M) Acclaimed by a 1979 Gallup Poll as the most popular band in America among 13 to 18 year old rock fans, Chicago’s Styx are anything but bubble-gum fodder, with fans throughout every age group.Earlier complex compositions, such as their fine "Suite Madam Blue”, revealed a subtlety in the lyrics, with the madam in question being a metaphorical portrait of the United States.PARADISE THEATRE strives for the same kind of complexity, but on this sixth album, Styx manages to hang a concept album together on the premise that the 1958destruction of the Paradise Theatre in Chicago (built in 1928 “with the idea that it would last forever”) has something to tell us about America today - and about love, lonely people, and other thematic concerns on the record.Always impressive in their vocal work, Styx shines on slower numbers like “The Best of Times”, as well as hammering out some foot-stompin’ ecstasy on "Rockin’ The Paradise”.The album is a strong one, and is an auspicious kick-off to what A&M Records claims is the largest tour in rock history.Styx, with an entourage of 46 crew-members, a 9 vehicle convoy, with a 140 performance itinerary, will be viewed by over 1.5 million people on the 1981 Paradise Theatre Tour.Judging by the clever mix of tempoes and styles on PARADISE THEATRE, the road show of this bright band from the mid-west promises to be one of the highlights of the current concert year.Cronkite quits Mar.6 The man who polls have said has Genie nominations released at a media reception Monday Of the five films being considered for best picture, three — Les Bons Débarras, L’Homme a Toute Faire and The Lucky Star — are Quebec productions. With 11 nominations, Les Bons Débarras (Good Riddance) tied for the lead with Tribute for the most category bids.Tribute, produced by the team of Garth Drabinsky and Joel Michaels — who swept the awards show last year for their supernatural thriller The Changeling — also made it to the best picture category, as did The Hounds of Notre Dame.Produced by Fil Fraser in Alberta, The Hounds of Notre Dame offered some stiff competition as well with eight other nominations, including best director, actor, supporting actor and supporting actress. The 19 feature categories for the Genie awards, to be held March 12 in Toronto, were divided among 15 Canadian films, a list which was pared from a larger selection by earlier ballotting.Quebec’s strong showing among the hopefuls was a welcome surprise following last year’s results, which saw that province’s industry take only one secondary prize — for Louise Jobin’s costume design in the film Cordelia. And Quebec film-makers were both upset and annoyed at the results.“It’s true there was a feeling that they deserved more, especially in one or two categories,” Andra Sheffer, executive director of the Academy of Canadian Cinema, said in an interview, "but I think there were two reasons for the outcome.‘‘First of all.The Changeling did win almost all the awards (eight out of 10 nominations) so it wasn’t like a vote against the Quebecers, it was a vote for The Changeling.“But there was also the problem that we feel not enough of the people who were voting had seen all of the Quebec films ” Of the 15 or so nominees who attended the media reception, most were from Quebec.Discover the f Restaurant ç,?ECJ4/ Brochettes HI Québécoise cuisine :.vy.v.v.>1; Old Fashioned Breakfast Bar-Salon Reception Room Tel.564-7788 5000 More stole the show at last weekend's hockey exchange in Lennoxville.Marilyn takes hockey arena by storm By Claudia Bowers LENNOXVILLE — Everything was finally ready.Exhaust from about 50 cars curled upward in the morning air as parents and organizers gathered at Lennoxville Elementary to await the arrival of three buses bringing 110 hockey players, a contingent of parents, coaches and well wishers from Terrebonne Park. The exchange marks the first organized by the new Lenn-Ascot Recreation Association.Last weekend was dedicated to minor hockey in this area, and, as Bill Stuart explained late Saturday afternoon, “We are more than satisfied. The teams are evenly matched, and every game so far has been a pleasure to watch.” Seven visiting teams participated in the 15 games scheduled. The number four seemed to hold sway the first day - after nine games every score showed a four and the teams stands at 8:30 p.m.Saturday was Lenn-Ascot - 5 games won, Terrebone - 4 games lost. But fans found more than that to cheer about.Marilyn More, pert and enthusiastic member of the Terrebone Park Pee Wee B team took the arena by storm. Her slim frame a blur action going up the ice, she popped the puck into the nets with all the expertise of her teammates and the crowds screamed with delight.Marilyn, whose athletic prowess in many sports is well known in her hometown, has played hockey since atom level, and, according to her father, is a speed skater and ringette player, and trains in gymnastics as well.“She is never idle,” he claims, “she is busy with at least one sport everyday.” Jeff Chalmers, Marilyn’s coach, is pleased with her hockey ability, “but, more important she is accepted by the team as one of them and minor hockey in our area at least is the better for it.” Chalmers, whose father Jim is the president of Terrebonne Park minor hockey, says over 100 teams in their district share facilities at five arenas and hockey is as common as going to work or school everyday.“Thinking in terms of the number of boys taking part in hockey in the Terrebonne area, it is quite remarkable that one girl could be so well accepted,” Chalmers points out.“But, although few people realize it, minor hockey has been open to girls since the beginning and it was only when another young lady, who had reached bantam age, joined, that the whole issue was put in the spotlight.” Two years ago, a female goaler was in the news as complications cropped up about dressing rooms and the usual male discrimination about girls in this inner sanctum stirred up a storm. But, the player won her case, and today a few young girls have taken their first steps into the world of minor hockey.Saturday, the players went to their billets as parents and friends from both sides gathered to get acquainted, then Sunday morning games resumed at BCS.Teams were evenly matched, and the games would have drawn crowds at the Montreal Forum.Scores seesawed from one team to the other until finally, the program ended with Lenn-Ascot ahead by one game, thanks to the efforts of the Midgets who played the final game of the weekend. Then it was scramble for the buses.Boys from the city wistfully said goodby, some saying they wished they could stay longer - ‘like forever'.Coaches and organizers, lists of names in hand started the final roll call as buses were boarded and a great weekend came to an end., “We couldn’t have asked for a better exchange,” Michel Cote, president of the Lenn-Ascot Minor Hockey said.“It was evenly matched and good, clean hockey. No fights nor skirmishes, and it seemed as though every player was on the ice because he loved the sport.Parents were on hand loo, and that encourages the boys more than ‘seven sermons," Cote added.Plans for a return exchange are already well on their way, and the weekend of April 21 has been set tentatively, depending on ice time available at Terrebonne. Some of the visiting boys wished they could stay longer — Hike forever ‘Wpr M- -Pi 4—TOWNSHIPS WEEK, FRIDAY.FEBRUARY 13,1981 ‘Raisin in Sun9 adaption to be aired By Nelly Young You may not have heard of Lorraine Hansberry but chances are you have seen the movie version of her first play, A Kaisin In The Sun, which starred Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.Seeing the stage production, writer James Baldwin commented “I have never in my life seen so many black people in the theater. And the reason was that never before, in the entire history of the American theater, had so much of the truth of black people’s lives been seen on the stage." A Raisin In The Sun made Lorraine Hansberry the youngest American playwright (28 years old), the fifth woman and the only black writer ever to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play of the year ( 1959).Six years later, at the age of 34, Lorraine Han-sberry's life ended abruptly because of cancer. Her achievements in that very brief life span were great (four plays, a novel-in-progress, drafts of plays and screenplays, non-dramatic works which include poetry, essays, speeches, memoirs, journals and correspondence). Her potential was even greater.Because it can never be realized, it is a great loss to all humankind.Among the many prominent figures who paid her tribute, Martin Luther King Jr.said “Her commitment of spirit .her creative literary ability and her profound grasp of the deep social issues confronting the world today will remain an inspiration to generations yet unborn.A cross-section of Hansberry's writings, both autobiographical and fictional, “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” is a dedicated adaptation by Robert Nemiroff, executor of Hansberry's estate.Through his eyes and Hansberry’s words, we get a unique self-portrait of an individual, “the workbook of an artist and the chronicle of a rebel who celebrated the human spirit. Now, more than a decade after its New York stage production and almost a decade after its television presentation, PBS will rebroadcast this moving story of Lorraine Hansberry, enacted by Ruby Dee, Roy Schneider, A1 Freeman Jr., Blythe Danner, Claudia McNeil, Barbara Barrie and Lauren Jones.Lorraine Hansberry wrote “I want to reach a little closer to the world, which is to say to people, and see if we can share some illuminations together about each other." Next Monday, February 16, at 20:00 on Channel 33 “To Be Young, Gifted And Black" offers viewers a rare occasion to share in some of that illumination.Towner Continued from Page 3 With his 12-string guitar, Towner ushered in a full-bodied sound, but his classically-styled fingerwork was uncluttered.delicate and solitary. His composition, “Beneath An Evening Sky" is merely one instance of the introspective quality that characterizes his playing. Not just anyone can play music like this.It takes years of training and experience.A graduate of the University of Oregon’s School of Music, Towner studied classical guitar in Vienna under Karl Scheit.Developing his own musical personality, he went on to introduce the acoustic and 12-string guitar to jazz.Abercrombie, a graduate of Boston's Berklee School of Music (like Gary Burton) plays the electric guitar and mandolin with the fluidity and lyricism of a lute.Years of practice and cross-fertilization in the New York music scene have produced extraordinary musicians who are appreciated wherever they are heard. The Cafe du Palais was no exception. But the subtlety and finesse of Abercrombie’s and Towner’s interpretations cry out for the reverent silence of a small recital hall or the rapt attention of a jazz festival crowd. As attentive as most of the Cafe patrons were, the loud hum of chatty drinkers at the bar and noise from the standing-room-only crowd, scrambling for the periodically vacated seat or an unobstructed view, invaded the intimate mood like a stampede of horses.Listening to one of the duo’s records at home would have been preferable.Perhaps next time around, Towner and Abercrombie will take these factors into account and either play in more conducive surroundings or bring along a drummer and piano player to keep people from drifting away, mentally and physically.Burt Reynolds flick gives CBS another triumph NEW YORK (AP) — With a little help from J.R.Ewing and Burt Reynolds, CBS chalked up its ninth straight week as the No.1 U S.network in the primetime ratings battle, figures from A.C.Nielsen Co.say.Dallas finished first in the ratings race for the 11th time in 14 weeks, while Hooper, a 1978 Reynolds picture making its TV debut, clobbered the competition — ABC’s East of Eden and Kent State on NBC — in a head-to-head race for viewers Sunday night.CBS’ rating for the week ending Feb.8 was 20,8, with ABC second at 19.5 and NBC third at 16.9.The networks say that means in an average primetime minute during the period, 20.8 per cent of theU.S.TV-equipped homes were tuned to CBS.Dallas, the dominant primetime series since early in November, registered a rating of 31.6.Nielsen says that means of all the homes in the U.S.with television, 31.6 per cent saw at least part of the dealings of the Ewdng clan.Hooper finished No.3 for the week, behind Dallas and another CBS show, Dukes of Hazzard, while the first chapter of East of Eden, ABC’s new adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, was No.15.Here are the week’s 10 highest-rated shows: Dallas, with a rating of 31.6 representing 24.6 million homes, Dukes of Hazzard, 29.7 or 23.1 ‘Eden ’ goal met LOS ANGELES (AP) -Producer Barney Rosenzweig says East of Eden is the movie he’s longed to make since he read John Steinbeck’s novel as a teenager.“It was probably the first important piece of American literature I read,” Rosenzweig said.“I ran to the movie when it came out in 1955 and I hated what they did. It’s a classic story of sibling rivalry, but they changed it into a period Rebel Without a Cause.“What horrified me even more was that this movie would stand forever as East of Eden.It didn’t occur to me at 15 that there was such a thing as a remake — and a mini-series was unheard of then." million, Movie-Hooper, 29.2 or 22.7 million, M-A-S-H, 28.7 or 22.3 million, and 60 Minutes, 28.3 or 22 million, all CBS; Diff’rent Strokes and Real People, both 25.7 or 20 million, both NBC; Lily: Sold Out, 24.9 or 19.4 million, CBS, and Love Boat, 24.8 or 19.3 million, and Three’s Company, 24.3 or 18.9 million, both ABC.Charcoal Steaks Italian Food Pizzeria 146 Wellington St.S.Sherbrooke, Que.Free Delivery To Sherbrooke & Lennoxville Tel.: 564-2202 564-2213 VALENTINE SPECIAL v° Liquor License VEAL CUTLET à la PARMESAN ENTREE: SPAGHETTI & SAUCE 6.95 EL TORO SPECIAL! the first talkie which featured the first crooner, A1 Jolson, in the title role. This contemporary version stars pop singer Neil Diamond as a cantor's son who knows there’s more to be done with his voice than waste it on the congregation. He breaks his father’s heart, breaks up his marriage and breaks into show biz with a goyish girl egging him on.Word has it Diamond can’t act his way out of a captured the awakening of a generation of hot-rodders and bobby-soxers at the end of the rock ’n’ roll 50s.But it is an entertaining escapade that returns to some of the old gang, intersecting their four different characters. And the music is an added bonus. The Cinema du Carrefour is showing A CHANGE OF SEASONS this week, a variation on what’s becoming a tired old theme.Seductive co-ed (Bo Derek) Speaking of Soap By MARYANN COOPER Robin Mattson plays Heather Webber on “General Hospital." Heather Webber has resurfaced on “General Hospital’’ to reprise all the troubles that have beset leff Webber concerning the fate of his ‘late’ son Stephen Lars. The latest in the list of actresses who have assumed this juicy role of “Heather" is Robin Mattson.Robin was born in Los Angeles and began her career at the age of seven. After a stint in episodic television and commercials, Ms.Mattson starred in the feature film “Namu, the Killer Whale," with Robert Lansing and Lee Meriwether.Robin has been married for the past two years to film producer Ray Manzella.Fans of “One Life to Live” will be very pleased to know that Gerald Anthony is returning to the role of Marco Dane. The rough and rugged Rafe Garretson is portrayed by Ken Meeker and Peter Janssen's wife, Melinda, who has just recently returned from a sanitarium, is played by a beautiful actress, Jane Sadler.Jane’s ‘Melinda’ is doing a very good job keeping Jenny and Peter apart.A new sinister character on the set of OLTL is Luther Jackson, Becky’s ex-husband.The man behind Luther is Peter Matthey.Last, but not least, there is Taina Elg appearing as the damsel-in-distress, Nicole.“All My Children’’ recently said goodbye to Nigel Reed in the role of Wally McFadden.Nigel was replaced by Patrick Skelton.I’m sure AMC fans noticed the absence of Mary Fickett as Ruth Martin.Unfortunately, Mary broke her ankle while skiing and actress Willi Burke filled in for Mary while she recuperated.Erica has a new boss who also serves as her new love interest. He’s Brandon Kingsley and he’s played by handsome Michael Minor. If Michael looks familiar to you, it may be that you remember him from the popular mid ‘60s TV series, “Petticoat Junction.” The newest addition to the AMC cast is Patricia Barry as Peg English, Brooke’s mother.Out on the west coast, “General Hospital’’ has added to its cast.First, of course, there is Robin Mattson as Heather Webber. Then there is the beautiful and sophisticated Alexandria Quarter-maine.She is played by Renée AhdèT$ôn',va'rT actress that perfectly fits that description. To complicate Alexandria's conniving schemes, GH added the character of Robert Scorpio, who is portrayed by Tristan Rogers.Eileen Dietz is appearing as Sarah, Heather’s roommate in the sanitarium. If you see the name, "Susan Pratt” as ‘Ann Logan’ in the credits, don’t worry, she’s still the same sweet Ann Logan we all know and love. Now that Susan O’Hanlon is divorced, she will be known both personally and professionally as Susan Pratt.Pratt, of course, is Susan's maiden name. Now a look at what’s been happening and what will happen on all the afternoon dramas.Recap: 2/9-2/13 Preview: 2/16-2/20 AS THE WORLD TURNS -Hayley is squarely in John's corner. At least he has one ally.Bart’s admission has Lyla in hot water with Bob, and her daughter is asking questions.GUIDING LIGHT ~ Chet s and Alan’s link to Jane Marie has forced Jennifer’s hand.Amanda may have to face the fact that she has been cruel and wrong.SEARCH FOR TOMORROW — Ted’s love for Janet is unswerving.Jamie is on the run and bows to Ted’s pressure, at least temporarily.THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS -
